    Hey Jeff ! First of all thank you for all your videos, I use them everyday, they are just great :) I am practicing the zone of the passagio these days and I have one question : Is it normal that the transition flows and my voice seems to mix nice when I lip trill but as soon as I try to do the same exercice with vowels, it is much harder to smothen out the change of register ? Thanks a lot !

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  Рік тому +3

      Exactly!!!! The lip trill makes the zona di passaggio much easier and when you go on to a solid vowel, it can be more challenging. Try to focus on the feeling of connection and adduction (closure of the vocal fold) while you're lip trilling through the zona di passaggio. When you switch to vowels, focus on the physical feeling and work towards making it feel the same, even if it sounds a bit odd at first. With practice, you'll gain more release and the tone quality will match.
      Great work! Great question! I answered here, but I'm going to talk about this in Questions from Comments 40!

    E like Hay, O like No, A like Father and U like You very good to put in the video. Simplicity and Awareness of good technique awesome! Aside: Finally getting that Vibrato, Formant and Resonance! It just comes like magic with practice. What's happening is on a cellular level in the brain through repeated training(its practicing everyday that matters). Finally, Range is C2-G4, what am I? I LOVE JEFF ROLKA TRAINING!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  Місяць тому +1

      Happy to help. No, your voice shouldn't be scratchy, and as for the tops notes, neither. The goal is to use cricothyroid dominant singing voice.

    This warm up is awesome. I wonder why he reuploaded it from yesterday

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 роки тому +4

      Thank you for that! Thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing too! I reuploaded it because two viewers mentioned that it was out of tune when they were playing along with the video. Turns out I had the frame rate wrong in Final Cut Pro when I imported it, effectively slowing it down slightly. If you have that version in your history, you can still use it, it's in tune with itself, but it's not A=440. This rereleased version is A=440. There are some arguments to be made for slightly adjusting 'A' for vocal practice when it comes to the secondo passaggio, because most of our voices don't conform to A=440 so it's usually in between notes on the piano. Not that it needs to be right on a pitch, but it would be helpful in teaching for sure!
      Thanks again!
      Jeff

    Hi, Jeff! Love your videos, they are absolutely fantastic and this one in particular is exactly what I need. My issue though (being a beginner) is that I'm not sure if I'm doing things right when going into the zone of the passaggio and above. I can't seem to be able to "lift" my voice up to that point without feeling a lot of strain in my neck/throat and even then, it comes out all crackly and trembly; I don't know how to engage these registers, essentially. I feel as if I end up pushing a lot of air into my throat and I try to regulate it around my trachea. My question is: Is it correct to continue with this particular exercise and just switch to head voice when I can't push anymore and through exercise I will naturally figure out how to engage the higher register? Or is there something else I should work on?
    Thank you and have a wonderful day!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing! Great question. It's great that you're a beginner and realizing that there must be something going on. That strain is the feeling of 'pulling chest' and there are others ways to sing high notes. When you do that, you're not actually changing registers, hence all the cracking and trembly sounds. There are two immediately available resources you can use. One is here:
      ua-cam.com/play/PL2mQP7sE6PHgDZbHwHzRwUf-HOWec-fgq.html
      And if you need something even more step-by-step and specific, the other is about to be released on my new website! It'll be just a few weeks more. If you want to get the info, subscribe to my newsletter at www.jeffrolka.com
      Great question! I hope that helps!

    Hi Jeff🖐️
    I've been practicing with your videos for a long time and I've just recommended your channel to a lot of my friends and they simply loved the content, so a huge thank you.
    I have a question that's been baffling me. To give a background, with a lot of practice I've expanded my range to D2-F4. But when I siren through my range, I can go up to around G5 (sounds shrill, but not too breathy) and there's an apparent gap around A4-C5 which my voice skips. That higher area feels very underdeveloped and unable to hit correct pitches. What is that part of my voice? Is it what true head voice is? How can I practice on connecting my current range to that higher one and being able to sing melodies with it?
    I hope I explained it understandably enough. Best wishes ✌🏻

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing my work with others! It really helps and I appreciate it!
      Sirening is a way to allow ourselves to transition over multiple registration events. We can do that with vowels, but when we try to 'place' or 'hit' a note, we almost always carry too much vocal fold engagement to allow them to re-configure properly. That gap that you're hearing is most likely the registration event from cricothyroid dominant singing (head voice) into the falsetto range. The vocal folds separate and dampen slightly in that register. The gap is undeveloped coordination, which can be remedied with practice and good technique!
      Best,
      Jeff

  • @SkylerMorgan

    Superb! Lately I've been working on squillo with my vocal coach (opera obviously) .. do you have pointers to help?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 роки тому

      Hello Skyler Morgan, thanks for your comment and question.
      I would first defer to your coach and their thoughts on the matter. They would know your voice best and guide you most effectively. While I am not familiar with your singing, one thought that I would offer is to be familiar with the various ways that squillo is discussed. Opera or classicaly trained vocalists will use that term, but it can also be referred to as singer's formant or mask resonance. One of my favourite exercises in working with the singer's formant is the ng sound. Your teacher will almost certainly be familiar with it, if they haven't already had you practicing it.
      That being said, properly developing that resonance relies on good overall engagement and vowel production. If that isn't well established in your thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice, results elsewhere in your range will be sporadic at best.
      Keep it up! Great question!
      Jeff

    Great video. Is there any way you could do the same thing in more guitar-centric keys/scales? Eb major is more of a keyboard 🎹 key. I’m a guitarist/singer and most of my songs are in E minor or A major or D major or E 7th. Just your basic guitar keys. Thanks 🙏

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing. I may start off in E-flat from time to time, but each scale as I proceed through the exercises changes keys. So I do actually do A major, D major, and E major, but there's no mixolydian mode or dominant sevenths in this video. If you like, I could do a video that only does those keys. That might be kind of interesting.
