I agree with you beside the PED in crossfit the top in this sport do certain Periodized training as with out planned training and going WOD only will not get you in top performance condition. But the conventional crossfitter who does WOD all the time are never peaking because they don't discriminate and plan intensity in periodized manner. But might look good. As an athlete competing doing crossfit regimen training is big no no and calling for injuries..
@@fiderdvis4714 Yea doing only WODs will get you in shape, but usually the top guys and gals are actually focusing on weaknesses and using a more surgical and individualized approach, for sure.
I heard they do bodybuilding when they are not crossfitting. That's probably my best guess. CrossFit is just a way to get your name out there, but their form sucks, which is why they have a high rate of injuries.

I think a very important caveat regarding top crossfitters is that they didn't build those physiques from scratch doing crossfit. A lot, if not all of them transitioned to crossfit from other sports (like oly weightlifting).

nah. A lot of people think the top athletes only do typical crossfit workouts. They don't. They do a lot of wheightlifting and strength training.
Or highly physical careers like infantrymen, because soldiers seem to love CrossFit thus being relatively used to that physical abuse.
And marines often juice up too, just like CrossFiters sooo another easy transition position lol.
This is the first time I've seen someone in the fitness industry acknowledge that most people would never want to look like a pro bodybuilder. I totally agree. I got into bodybuilding in part because I want to look good, but I've always been baffled when people talk about how great these top pro bodybuilders look. There's something almost uncanny valley ish about them, with their deeply unhealthy low body fat levels and often a strangely orange cast to their skin color.

2 years ago, I started at a cf box. I'm 70 and had been working out at home for a decade. Doing cf, helped to strengthen my problem areas like a bad shoulder. My problem is that I am physically impaired so I could not do exercises on par with the other people. I paid a lot of money to the cf box. Over 6 months ago, I left the box to work out at a normal local gym plus do stretching and yoga at home. I had learned enough to create my own exercise program in the new gym. I pay nothing for this gym membership because my insurance company pays for it. Now, I exercise at my own pace and am seeing results. I'm lean (I eat low carb). I'm not into bb. I just want to build some muscle and maintain it. I know people my age who are obese, take small steps afraid to fall and fracture a hip. I'm doing handstands. Cf was a good launchpad for me. Also, learning leg, ankle and foot strengthening exercises promoted by the kneesovertoesguy has helped with leg strength and balance.
Sounds awesome! As someone that works with elderly individuals, you're lightyears ahead of others! Plus kneesovertoesguy is the man. Good luck on your fitness journey!

If my local commercial gym had to pick one or two guys to go to a pro photo shoot with good lighting, image editing etc. I think they would get close to looking as good. Real life crossfitters look nothing like the people in the clips Geoffrey played. It's the .01 % that gets in the videos.
Absolutely. Go to any random CF gym and you’ll see flabby adults barely held together with tape and sleeves and can’t actually do a strict pull up. Yet they’ve been going for 3 years 5 days a week.
This is true. 2 years ago I was not even too 1000 in the world yet and at SOME CrossFit gyms I’d walk in shredded & 180LB and people would look at me like I was THE SHIT because most weren’t shredded
Top 1% look great. Most people in my gym (half is a box), look like normal people. There's no real progression involved in the WODs, hence people get fitter, rather than stronger. Also the level of drugs even at low level regional events is mind blowing
Could you elaborate on the drugs a bit? Not the first time hearing CF (and BJJ?) folks almost consider juicing normal.
@@heyheyhophop fucking loads of people are on gear. Pretty much most sports are juicy. 10% of young men are on gear according to one study in the UK

@@thebiggestpanda1 hey u breaking ppl heart with tht one lol
Hey Geoff,
I notice in a lot of your videos/posts how much historical data you accurately collect about your weight/performance etc. I think it would be pretty cool to make a video on how and what you personally track and how others can implement the same strategies!
Great info, I've had similar discussions about the importance of diversity in working out with multiple people, back when I use to powerlift/Olympic lift (Pre-Covid), however, many of the bandwagon cross-fitters don't want to hear about the extra work, and believe that a simple AMRAP, EMOM, or a single WOD will do the trick. From what I gathered through experience, and from some beautifully sculpted Cross-fitter friends, that many of the "simple" WOD's occur either as warmups, or additional burnout sessions for pre or post main workout (especially when competing or prepping for a competition).
Been working out for 33 months now. I'm 29, dropped 30 kg the first year and since then just slowly building a lean but strong "functional" body. I aim more towards calisthenics and an aesthetic physique but I think I look a bit like a crossfitter (but I've never tried it). 189 cm tall and 88 kg. Really healthy and happy at this weight :)
That’s amazing! I would love to talk to you about your weight loss, I have similar stats to you when you started but taller (195cm)
Genetics, selection bias, PEDs and volume :)
Safe to say ALL top crossfitters are on PEDs, exemptions will only confirm this. All shredded, super agile, stamina high AF, barn door size backs/shoulders and so on.
And, Crossfit as a discipline, bans only few drugs, FEW, from a mile long list.
It’s not a sustainable hobby. The risk for injury is extremely high thanks to high reps with poor form. The only way those CF athletes are able to maintain performance and heal from injuries year round is drugs. There’s no way around it.
@@elmatasesues3630 What about and, bear with me here, what about if you don't do it with poor form?
@@carloscruz2582 I tried to watch CF top competitions. I tried. I couldn't due to exactly that issue, poor form. They all know very well how to execute the exercises, but the demand is on time and high rep count, hence the form is gone.
@@maciejc1673 but you said hobby. I agree that CF as a competitive sport is dangerous af but it can definitely be a sustainable hobby if you are responsible.
@@carloscruz2582 the number of reps they do necessitate poor form. You can’t do 50,60 pullups non-stop with strict form. It’s just not possible. Same thing with mid-weight cleans for reps. Even if your muscles/tendons didn’t tear from the stress halfway in, your nervous system would fry and you’d probably faint. Which is why momentum is the name of the game in CF, which contravenes advice in literally every other strength endeavor/sport; this means the weight is moving uncontrolled through space, and you’re basically ’catching’ it at the expense first and foremost, of connective tissue viz tendons/ligaments, and these can’t really be trained. What’s more is they do this shit weekly, multiple times a week in training, which means there’s literally no recovery time. It’s drugs bro. Plain and simple
I think one thing people greatly overlook with physiques is bone structure. Most of these athletes as well as Body builders have LARGE BONES... their wrist width, chest cavity width are spread wide. I dont see that many athletes that are "ectomorphs" performing at these levels. Its the Thick stocky types with that leanness that look this good. (and then what ever other factors of work , dedication etc that contribute as well)
Exactly people talk about muscle building genetics gears and whatnot but they tend to look over the different types of frames on people some people are just muscle full on without touching weight in their life and some just don't build decent even tho they train hard some even take gear and still look shit
I think is not CF but the variety of movements, the combination of training styles. If you look at Alec Ankiri, who trains in a variety of skills, he looks muscular and lean and is super strong, the same with calisthenics, you can see some amazing physics in calisthenics.
he looks like a douche full blown douche an absolute jerk lol
but yeah he is jacked ad strong
I did CF for around 6 years and, although people in the comment section who have never done it might disagree, Crossfitters work hard as fuck. That (and drugs, same as BB) is why they look how they look. Plus, they do a ton of hypertrophy work.
People don't think that crossfitters don't work hard, we just think most of the work they do is dangerous, ridiculous, or some combination of the two.
People just see the meme side of CF, but not any of the good that comes with it. Lots of really great concepts in CF that many lifters could benefit from. Just leave the kipping bs at the door.
@@Wayf4rer I see the meme side of it like most do, and it's entirely absurd because that's the point, but I also see the crossfit games and a lot of that is just as dangerous and ridiculous as the stuff you see in memes. I hurt my back and blew out my C5 in my neck one time just watching it lol.
They dont work any harder than anyone else lol
We would all work as much if we had the balls like them to take gear. But we’re smart
More functional oriented fitness creates good aesthetics. Many are drawn to CF by the physiques of people they met who did CF. It is a very balanced and athletic shape. The juiced pros aside, go to any CF box and you’ll see JACKED natties. You need to be strong, fast, and quite mobile to do C&J and snatches. And not only are cross fitters strong, they are VERY fit, which cannot be said for most strength athletes.
Jacked crossfit natty's is an oxymoron. Your naive if you don't know most of those people are on steroids.
Great analysis!
You've nailed it
Retro physique is my goal, not cbum or whatnot but Steve Reeves
those are steroids physiques i never look at them serious
@@mariuxxxx1 bro Steve Reeves lived before steroids
Between Reeves and Zane for me
Personally, I'm aiming for something akin to DBZ Tien and long-term Farnese Hercules, but silver age physiques are highly estetic as well.
I wouldn't consider it my goal but my favorite physique is William shatner in early star trek. Or maybe Jason momoa on his time off when he isn't starved and dehydrated in order to show a visible six pack
My current training to have that CrossFit performance whilst being aesthetic is this:
A: Olympic Lift for explosiveness and technicality
B: Power Lift for max strength (CNS primed by Oly lift)
C: Power Lift Volume work giant set (Think Brian Alsruhe)
D: Strongman Event
E: Bodybuilding Hypertrophy work
F: 10 Minute WOD
In my opinion, for those interested in general performance and still looking REALLY good, this is a great template. Obviously Cbum and Mat Fraser don’t train like this, but they’re the 0.00001% who need to specialize.
I’m glad you mentioned Brian Alsruhe. I love his videos, and his combination of strength giant sets with conditioning have been amazing for me physique this last year.
Is this a single workout or each of these are separate ones?
@@Natedawg1 this is a single workout but obviously the days are different. I train 4x per week (upper/lower)
Day 1: Snatch, Squat, Strongman Yoke, Legs Hypertrophy, Sprints
Day 2: Clean & Jerk, Bench, Strongman Carry, Upper Hypertrophy, MetCon
Day 3: Snatch Variation, Deadlift, Strongman Loading, Lower Hypertrophy, Agility
Day 4: Clean & Jerk Variation, Press, Strongman Sled, Upper Hypertrophy, Run
I average 10-15 sets/muscle, I train max effort but undulate the intensity of the variations, and I train athletic movements.
It should be noted that this IS NOT a basic program. You need to understand a lot of programming principles or else it’s very easy to burnout. I’m 18 and have been studying fitness since 15 so it’s been over 3 years of trial and error. Hope this helps!💪🏻
@@robertburtchell6824 After implementing giant sets, I can never go back. Once you figure out how to design them logically, it’s a game changer!
There is no real reason to do Olympic lifting except for doing Olympic lifting. Some techniques from it are amazing though. I started front squatting ass to grass with Oly shoes and my quads are blowing up. 4x3 heavy reps, 3x12 lighter high reps. Insane size increase
A lot of crossfitters have a physique where they have large torsos, relatively smaller arms, thick waists and huge traps from all those farmers walks and core work. The V taper is more aesthetic to most people, not just in BB.
They have the balance of muscle mass and bf% that appeals to most people but not the structure or proportions, imo.
Yes, CFers look too chunky, in particular, the women, who have lost their feminine proportions. If you take the silhouette, gymnasts, swimmers, and combat sports athletes have a more preferable aesthetic look (IMO).
@@angelsjoker8190 yeah they’re super athletic for sure, but not a huge fan of the physique/silhouette they end up with
@@jicalzad Yeah, no question they are athletic powerhouses. But also the disciplinces seem to favor short limb genetics (i.e. short arms need to travel shorter distances during the pull-up flops, hence they can be done faster) which adds to the stocky silhoutte.
I feel like the V Taper is really popular among the gym community, but the majority of regular ppl don't think it looks that good. Just having large delts looks better then this upside triangle look for most ppl. The normal sized waist with strong abs looks really powerful in crossfitters, boxers, wrestlers, American football players...
Just my opinion tho

3:15 one exception that I would note is professional cycling (yeah not CrossFit, but more about sports in general).
A number of years back, everyone in the Tour De France (I believe, or another race) popped for steroids after the race. Like, literally everyone, all the way up to the big name, Lance Armstrong. Agree that it’s very rare, but does occasionally happen
Great Video. Keep up the good work.
The only thing i would add, is that if a natural person wants to look like a crossfit pro, they have to do Bodybuilding, to build as much muscle as they possibly can natural. Sadly most naturals will still not look like a crossfit pro.
They move up heavy things and then put them down many times plus good nutrition and healthy lifestyle, and many times. drugs... yeah, who would have thought...looks to me like body building plus more cardio...
this is a great video, truly informing people of realistic expectations and debunking some myths.
models, actors, athletes, et al who use enhancing *whatever*, ignite in some people an unrealistic image that, for most, is unattainable. Personally, I find that behavior insidious and damaging to an unsuspecting society. Certainly everyone is accountable for their choices & must be response-able to those choices; do your own research. However, setting people up for one's own self-interest is a fail at humanity, itself.
I like the idea of mixed-discipline like in CrossFit and MMA etc. But some of the funny exercises like kipping pull ups, I think I can forgo. Then again, in my current state of obese, I can't start yet 🤣
crossfit doesnt really work for mma. My old MMA gym was next to a crossfit gym. A few of the cross fit people that joined stopped doing CrossFit style workouts and did more traditional strength & conditioning with Hit cardio every day
Kipping pull ups are great depending on what you are looking for. They are a compound movement that hits muscle groups that most compound movements miss. They are also body weight movements which have nice scaling properties for people in decent to good shape.
Obviously higher level body builders are not going to use these. They are going to look for things were its easier to target specific muscles and control progressive overload much more carefully. And newer people will struggle with form. But if you are someone who just wants to get in a bunch of volume for a wide variety aesthetic muscles not often hit by other compound movements they are great. If you are trying to maintain your look and only have 10 minutes to work out they are really hard to beat.
Drug use and CrossFit is a topic most barely talk about. Glad you are talking about it. Most think these athletes are natural. Drug use in the sport is more rampant than others think. Not saying all of them are using BUT it’s not out of the equation either.
Very nice video 🤩😂 crossfiters do looks nice but I really love gym machines and classic gym stuff. Kissing dumbells here
Bingo! The muscle mass that a lot of the guys (and gals) have is mostly from using gear. Most of them would be substantially smaller and weaker without steroids.
yeah traing crossfit is not really for hypertrophy. i doubt they would eveb look like silver age or bronze age strongmen.
Classic physique is my favourite of all, its just peak muscle growth at natural level's which i love, seeing the capabilities of each person and what their bodies can achieve.
Most of them aren't natural either
Natural? Lol
So who's natural? Drop some names
Toughest thing in crossfit to me was the eating part..we burn so much getting in the calories to just be enough to train is hard.
My ideal physique would be classic IFBB pro but in the off season. If we’re talking competition ready, I’d have to go with CrossFit 😬
Crossfitters, probably: My diet is natural so I don't have to be.
I started off my adult fitness pursuits with a year of crossfit, the training and approach are fine but the culture was deeply toxic on most levels. including pushing and pressuring people to perform well above where they should be resulting in an absurd number of injuries and those injuries being treated as inevitable. Once it was time for the open all the coaches and most of the gym lost any interest in training or helping people and it became about clapping the performers on the back but if you couldn't accomplish some task you were just ignored. Once I realized all that AND realized I don't like the blocky torso look that crossfitters seem to inevitably end up with I passed on through to traditional bodybuilding.
True the blocky midsection is very noticeable!
Yeah I’v noticed they’re physiques r so similar, wonder why that is
Interesting, I've literally never been to a crossfit gym with that mentality.
There are probably gyms/boxes like that, but then again, humans make experiences vary....that is not at all relatable my experience in crossfit.
I started crossfit as an adult when I was about 33 years old, that have never learned to enjoy working out. Crossfit gym culture did it for me and now at 37 I train 5x per week and love it.
Sounds like a bad gym
Olympic lifts are key to looking jacked. Cleans and press/jerks build big shoulders, forearms, traps, legs, and back. Look at American football players.
I would argue that if someone wants to look like a CrossFit athlete without joining a box and wants to do it in a safe way I say get kettlebells. They lend themselves to compound movements much safer than barbells, do calisthenics and follow like a routine or circuit style work and you have yourself your own version of it this is what I started doing.
I stumbled into crossfitting after doing a 6week challenge at gym near me, and subsequently joining. ...I look at crossfit, personally, as cross-discipline-training; It got me nice mass plus sub 6% bodyfat, and sweet power. I love learning Olympic lifts (explosiveness with barbells baby), and going strict for the callisthenic movements. CrossFit forces me to train cardio and maintain the ability to pack volume in, when previously I mostly trained like a powerlifter with ginormous recovery between sets. I learned that training the fast twitch muscle fibers WILL make your one rep numbers directly jump. I don't take interest in the CrossFit games or the whiteboard score. When I get into the gym I find what flavors of lifting are on the table for the day, I warm up, and I push hard until it's protein time (Then I go home feeling amazing and YOKED with a huge cheesy grin).
If I get a good time on the whiteboard then I failed to go heavy somewhere (I like to make my own RX+, It's been working good)
Crossfit is an excellent tool to have and use for great general training, it keeps potentially weakening areas in check. -You supplement your twist in with that, where you possible, and you WILL build rapidly towards your vision.
You're not sub 5% bodyfat no matter how much gear you take
@@stephen8996 4.7 on a questionably calibrated in-body scan scale 3 weeks ago.. I love it. I RX scale UP BABY
There are no mirrors in the gym, we just move in there. I notice the gains when I brush my teeth, my friggen traps have multiple heads. Jerks, snatches and overhead squats are finally starting to feel niiice and controlled. My core and max numbers shall explode within the next year.
So there are like ninja turtles, much smaller version of bodybuilders and maybe with same amount of drugs.
I am jealous of their endurance. They are hard workers.
To answer your question at the end, I'd like to look like me, but bigger. Especially in the shoulder region, I love the look of massive shoulders.
I’ve literally been thinking about this, they mix weightlifting, callisthenics and most importantly running!
I started adding in one “conditioning” session a week along with usual 4 days in the gym which is more BB focused ..
I gotta say I really enjoy it .. it’s going off the CrossFit blueprint and it’s nice to do a bit of a blow out …
Same here. Upper/Lower 4 days a week plus a recently added CrossFit inspired conditioning day. It’s made me feel better and stronger than ever.
Crossfit is the weird ass cousin of olympic weightlifting, change my mind

All in all still 230 running about 15%. I actually don’t care for crossfit everyone i ran into that was all about including family member struggle when it comes to real endurance
The only think I like about crossfit

For that question, I think Men's Physique is the most aesthetic personally but that wasn't one of the options.
Say about CrossFit what you want: the top level CrossFitters are fucking FIT (strong/conditioned) and of course are able to do exercises with what we call "proper form".
I'm not a CrossFit fan, but I have to admit: seeing what they do at the CrossFit Games to me is absolutely impressive.
I certainly would die just trying, "good" or "bad form"...
(My background is Basketball (youth), Kickboxing (as a younger adult), Functional Strength and now Armwrestling btw)
Well if 90% of your movements are done to failure and beyond you gonna have a *big* time. And all that cardio gets you shredded.
45 yo male from India and my introduction to the gym was CrossFit. A few months and injured knees, ankles, wrists, and shoulders later, switched to kettlebells and BB style training. Don't think people realize how safe BB style training really is, while delivering several good results.
I aim for the IFBB Pro look, knowing perfectly that I'll look forever like a crossfiter, cuz natty reasons...
My answer to your closing question: of the three options given, I’d prefer a CrossFit physique. Given any choice, I’d like to be naturally strong and healthy, whatever that looks like.
Can you give an example of what a woman who works out at lifting and conditioning for a living that is natural? What would an unenhanced woman who trains hours a day across resistance training and cardio look like?
Look up the WNBF. I am reasonably certain that MOST (not 100%, but certainly over 50%) competitors there are natural. That should give you a pretty good benchmark of what is possible for the genetic elite.

@@DrOrr nahh and if you think that’s unattainable natural you aren’t trying hard enough.
I’ve been doing CrossFit 4x a week, along with Jeff Nippard’s Push Pull Legs split (I reduce the volume on some workouts) and have noticed great gains muscle, strength and especially athleticism.
This is the best approach
If you work out 6 times a week you're gonna get great results regardless. You'd definitely get better hypertrophy gains from deleting the crossfit and doing a well designed, high volume 6x/week bodybuilding split
@@maxk880 I don’t do CrossFit for the hypertrophy
Most of the top performers in any sporting event are going to be on PEDS (especially TRT / HGH) so if you endeavor to be competitive you’ll likely need to take part in PED’s as well.
Regardless doing “CrossFit” exercises will generally yield superior results from the standpoint of functional strength and endurance while at the same time producing a desirable physique that doesn’t resemble something absurd like many “body builders” these days.
thanks for the focus on drug use among women specifically
Bro your information is good but you could really improve your production quality with a better backdrop or a green screen. Not hating, this is constructive feedback
I used a backdrop before and that got hated on even more. Can't make everyone happy.
@@GVS Fair enough man, good video regardless 👌
Yes DRUGS! I appreciate they are mega fit and strong and work ridiculously hard and also have good genetics. But the size gains and performance levels achieved would not be sustainable without the aid of PED's.
You can do stuff like pullups+ bodyweight squats, or barbell rows + barbell Romanian deadlift, at home or in the gym, without a CF coach around.
Just about any time under tension, especially compound movements, just work. Even the strange stuff.
Shredded but can't do one real pull up lmfao 🤣

hey geoff im struggling building muscle in my calves (all my life i had chiken legs) i was wondering if you could do a video about building calves, also does walking with weighted backpack works ? pls my mental health is desesperate for a video.
Dude, the legs on that lady hitting the cleans at the end. Can I get a witness?
The 5 reasons are gear, gear, gear gear and....... gear
Disregard crossfit physiques. Chasing that Zyzz/Frank Zane/Arnie look
Now I realise why I'm under 15% body fat year round without trying hard to stay lean... I've been on a paleo diet as far back as I can remember... I just didn't realise it had a name. But since I started my lean bulk a couple years ago (I've gained 20lbs & haven't had to cut once) I've had to start including a lot more "unhealthy"/ highly processed/ high calorie food... which suits me fine since I'm eating whatever I want now. I think portion control is more important than what you actually eat (I have a very small stomach & hate feeling too full).
A football (aka soccer) player said: "The doctor would come and inject me with something. It gave me a headache, but I could run faster/for longer the next day."
They almost always have horrible imbalances tho. Like super overgrown abs, tiny traps, pencil necks ect... Just bad physiques over all imo
If Wolverine had a fitness channel
I was BB training and then PL and Strongman when CrossFit got big
I’m glad it puts barbells into peoples hands but I still have a disdain for it and it’s culture that I find hard to overcome.
....I fear for any guest entering your home. It looks as if one enters, they're not going to leave. lol
