  • It’s a sad day for the Mopar community. Immediately prior to this incident, I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner/driver of the car, Joe. The car is a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda with a full RMS (Riley Motorsports) suspension, fully built 727 automatic transmission, and a thumping 408 stroker smallblock v8. It’s uncertain whether the car will be rebuilt or not. The damage is extensive. These are unibody cars. Thankfully, Joe is doing ok and will be able to continue racing in the future.
    Joe,
If you’re reading this, I’m so sorry for your loss. It was a great run and a new personal best if I remember correctly. The car was handling the track with ease. Keep up the great work and never let your love of racing go.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Please subscribe if you like classic car builds and racing. The gas pedal rod bent during the race and wedged itself behind the brake pedal. That’s why the car accelerated into the barrier. You can hear the front tires lock up just before the wall. Yes, the back window also made it out alive lol

Same here, I've dumped so much money and time into my car and it still needs paint and body work, the interior finished and some suspension bugs worked out. I'd imagine I'm going to have $40,000+ into it when it's done and I can't even imagine wrecking it. I feel so bad for the poor guy, sounds like his throttle stuck open. Could happen to any of us reguardless of brand, engine, carb, etc. Really sucks to see.

Some days are lucky days and some are bummers man. I was totally surprised of the damage done to the 'Cuda on that course. I think it just means the car will come back to roll another day, another way. Hopefully restomoded, full cage fiberglass clip, rebuilt 426 police pursuit wedge/Torqueflite. Remember the1967 Hurst HEMI UNDER GLASS back in the day? That barracuda is no longer around. It was a Mid engine mount like todays C8s . I heard that the original HHUG was stripped for the drive train and a new one was built. Also the owner, Riggle, and Jay Leno rolled it at the end of a parking lot run. They weren't injured but the car was!

I never liked the autocross setup at GoodGuys as there's little margin for error if you make a driving mistake or have a mechanical issue like this. You're instantly into a concrete barrier, your beautiful hot rod is wrecked, and most importantly you're highly likely to have some serious injuries from the crash.

That's why I only compete in SCCA events or those following SCCA autocross rules, where courses are designed to include adequate run off room and braking zones to substantially minimize risk of damage. Accidents like this may result in the loss of a hard to find site or event insurance.

@@bobstiles1681 it’s a matter of personal opinion on that tho Bob folks either loved or heated the first Gen barracuda and I fall into the love category but I didn’t care for the redesign in 67 near as much. I’ve owned both and my 66 was almost identical to this one which is probly why it hurts me so bad to see her get smashed! My 66 was a Formula S car but the old 273 was gone long before I came around and had a nice 318 in it when I got her and the previous owner had been racing her for several years with the heated up 318 and she did surprisingly well but I wanted a bit more so I built a really nice 340 and that woke the car up more than it should have and I could not keep the front tires on the ground and she’d spin the back ones shifting from 2nd to third at 60+ mph! My 67 tho was a convertible and I had her set up as just a cruiser in nice weather. Loved em both and miss em both dearly and wish I still had em. Funny thing is that they were both yellow but the 66 had black interior while the 67 had the white. They definitely require a different type of owner than what your mustang and camaro owners are, that’s for sure!

I’m fricn sick!!!! I had a 66 Formula S but I only took it and street raced or t the track. I would have never attempted anything like this cause the car just wasn’t built to handle the twists and turns and not sure what braking system he had upgraded to but you need a top notch system for that. He had a close call a bit sooner at the other end of the track cause brakes were fading out on him and it should have been a sign then to pull the plug, but it’s all easy to say fro sitting back here and I’m not faulting the guy or bashing him, it just fricn sucks we lost such a beautiful car!!
Hoping since they’ve had a chance to look at it closer that they may be able to put a new clip on the front and pull things straight again and do lots of grinding and welding and try and save the ole girl!! It’s worth a shot anyways!! But at least the driver is good and not hurt. We can build another barracuda, we just don’t want to! Hope it all works out fits, she’s still a beautiful car in my eyes! I put a 340 in mine and I had trouble keeping the front end on the ground. She was definitely a big block slayer for sure. She embarrassed more than a few 440s back in the late 80s down in the Florida panhandle! Golly, I miss that car so much!!!

Obviously this sucks and pains me for the owner. I t-boned a Vega in my '68 Cougar when I was a teen and was able to rebuild it, but that wasn't a concrete wall. Really sorry.
But I agree with others here... there's no run-out after the finish line. It was an accident waiting to happen. Running street tires with short sidewalls that become slippery when hot, brakes that were overheated, both of which you see/hear on that second lap. Then you push it to the finish line for a good time and you go straight into the wall. I also agree that some crash barrels would have been better, but the organizers didn't care about the hazard in the first place so not sure they would have paid for water barrels.

I can't tell for certain from the video, but it appears as though the "Finish Line" was just before the corner where the car left the course.
Proper autocross layout design would never do that, as the tendency to keep the power on through the lights and not pay enough attention to what comes after creates a dangerous situation.

Hey there... I think we know each other... (Alan?) I also was a National 125 driver when it was called F125. (Dave) Been doing cars since then, but recently got a new shifter chassis to re-join you guys. Agreed with you. Our Safety Stewards would have never approved that short shutdown area. But from another video posted on UA-cam of this crash that was taken right at the impact site, it's obvious that the throttle got stuck. Still, with a shutdown area that short, there is no margin for error.
