Someone said somewhere that the Simon and Garfunkle version is the warning and Disturbed is the anger at not listening to the warning. This is the only cover that Paul Simon recommends. He also said that it's now Disturbed song as they did it more justice than they could.
I agree, and unfortunately it is us the over 50 crowd(including myself) that didn't heed the warning, and now our children and grandchildren are paying the price.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! Every time I hear this I get goosebumps. The man can sing...no matter if it's a ballad, heavy metal or in between! Loved your comments.
I find this version deeper than the original. David Draiman brings a darker feel to the song with his baritone and greater sense of urgency. He brings an emotional punch by tapping into the spiritual aspects of the song. His original musical training was as a Hazzan (Jewish Cantor) in his youth.
I get chills every time. Enjoyed S&G back in the day. but this one is so powerful. First one man alone, then two, then thousands coming together, it is a plea for unity and understanding. ✌🇨🇦
I have listened to dozens of reviews and reactions on this song and I like yours because it said no Pause . That being said I am a 65 year old disabled man with very little to do but study the change in our world and listen to reactions to this cover. Most others can not give this a fair review because they are too busy pausing and forcing their Ideas on it without really experiencing the whole song. Which for a music critic is very stupid. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and never really got the lyrics until now. This brings tears of TRUTH to my eyes every single time I hear it!
Thanks, I enjoyed your discussion a lot. Yes, the original is more a folk song, this more a call to arms. It was for decades my favourite song, still is, just sung by a different group. People tend to have a visceral reaction to the challenge of this version: tears, body pulling back, chills, gut-clenching all common. I love David Draiman's voice - this song introduced me to Disturbed who are now my favourite band. You might like to see The Light, another beautiful song from them, or something like their Land of Confusion cover.
Thr range and power of this man and song is incredible. Appropriately done for this time in history. Just as in the way it was done in the 60s was perfect. My favorite song in both decades. A Masterpiece.
A heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and owns a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening! No matter what genre you like, this is superbly done and flawless! The best cover/song/video these past 7 years! DISTURBED ~ WOW!! Disturbed - Sound Of Silence (live) = ua-cam.com/video/Bk7RVw3I8eg/v-deo.html
It's important to listen to what he is saying, which is ironic because the song says it's one of the things we haven't been doing. My take is the Simon and Garfunkel version was a gentle reminder that we are doing things like hearing others without actually listening to what's actually being said and the Disturb's version is a rightfully angry cry that we still haven't heeded Paul's warning from 1964.
I think Disturbed translated the song to our century. They put the words into emotions in a way that wasn't possible in the 70s. Anger, fear, depression... no topics at that time but that is what the lyrics tell about from our view now. In my view, in the time i live in, this is better than the original.
The Neon God We made.. TV -when song was written, as relevant today with computers, phones, I pads. Disconnection within humanity.. talking without speaking= texting Hearing without listening= our growing inability to hear any opinion that we don't agree with. This was truly an inspiration from above through a dream to the writer. AWESOME
The original has a hippie dippy feel to it. I know that, because I was in my teens when it came out. I love this version the best. Very relevant to our time.
I'd love to see your reaction after RElistening to the original. I loved the original, the next time I heard it after hearing this it sounded....light. Light, fluffy, shallow. Amazing!
Cool reaction, first time I've heard the word hymn used as a description of the original song, and fitting...Really enjoyed this all around. You just got a new subscriber. Have a great day!
The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is sad resignation. The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is Dammit, LISTEN! ***** The Warning ***** "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
@@mikeduncan3953 I know they're the same definition, I just think of a cover being performed in the same style, tempo etc. I guess when I think of cover songs, I picture karaoke lol
I’m not quoting Neal Simon verbatim, but he made a statement that when he wrote it, it was a warning to people, and when Disturbed did the cover, it reflected anger that the people didn’t listen to the warning. He let David know how much he loved the cover and that the song belongs to Disturbed now.
Who are you? Why have I never heard of you? A Reaction channel that DOSESN'T chop every video into word-salad by pausing EVERY EFFING 5 SECONDS? Thank you so much!
I have been watching people react to the song for two nights. Clearly you were not impressed, which is fine. It is a work of art and we can all appreciate it to any degree we feel. There is no right or wrong way to here a song. And we all forgive you.....
I like what they have done to the song. It still carries similar meaning, but they have done it differently technically. David has done a great job. His live performance on Conan is better though
Maybe you’ve already done this having heard other covers of it. But from you I saw a face enjoying the song. But the song, this song, this version needed your interpretation for today audience. It’s a prophecy sung by David, in a preaching manner. Simon and Garfunkel were not praised for this song as people thought they were preaching to them and they were. But it has a meaning different sometimes from one person to the next. I didn’t want your artistic interpretation but what your soul felt. Simon wrote this in a bathroom on the floor in the dark 2 weeks after the assasination of John f Kennedy, president of the United States in 1964. Find the relevance to you. You graded the songs performance. You’re young. It had a meaning 56 years ago. Some of this was about technology and some of it was not listening to the cries of our minority mankind. That doesn’t have to be your interpretation. But I didn’t get any of that from you. Maybe you already had it from hearing it by the composer and other covers. David just got through preaching a sermon with simons song. If you’ve never heard a sermon from an evangelical minister this was it. A prophecy.
This cover is incredible! If you want to hear two other very good a capella covers of the song, listen to Pentatonix as well as Peter Hollens with Tim Foust from Home Free.
Was never a huge fan of the original singing. The song was great. But S&G cadence was a bit off and always grates me when I hear it. This version is a million times better. Agreed it has a different tonality.
I dont think your understanding the Words to this song...Or The meaning behind it...Its a Strong Warning from God to All of us... The Words of the Prophets are written!!!
I didn't like your reaction. :( First, you didn't even notice that there was no sound in the first 12 seconds! Second, I have never seen a more insensitive reaction, as if you didn't like the song. And in one week I have seen over 600 reactions! I stopped the video at 3 minutes.👎
There's a reason this version has hundreds of MILLIONS of views, It's powerful and brings out emotions in listeners.

Simon & Garfunkel’s was a whispered warning. Disturbed’s is a battle cry!

Best cover ever made. Davids range is fantastic for this song.

This cover is my absolute favorite song. Has been for years. I have a lot of great memories listening to it with my mom as well. Great reaction.
Simon & Garfunkel said they really like this cove of their song and this song is now Disturbed’s song
Best version ! PERIOD !
So nice to whole song then the cpmments. Especially this version.
I'd love to see your reaction after RElistening to the original. I loved the original, the next time I heard it after hearing this it sounded....light. Light, fluffy, shallow. Amazing!
Finally someone who knows to listen to a whole song without interrupting with dribble. Well done!
Ain’t going to lie, I listened to see if she was going to pause it. If there was EVER a song to pause and collect yourself, this is it!
Cool reaction, first time I've heard the word hymn used as a description of the original song, and fitting...Really enjoyed this all around. You just got a new subscriber. Have a great day!
It's not a key change. He jumps a full octave.
Thank you for not pausing! Yea, somebody that does it right! Thank you, Steve.

***** The Warning *****

Faith and communication = love
A lot of us feel the original was the warning and this version is the warning not heeded.
I'd consider this a rendition rather than a cover. He changed the aspect, emotion, and style of the song without changing the lyrics.
That is literally what a cover is.

Love this song and your reaction to it 💖
Agreed

David was raised as a cantor plus had vocal lessons a few years ago.

S&G said himself this version was better than their original and is on his Playlist
S&G version was a polite warning. Disturbed's was the angry version.
I like what they have done to the song. It still carries similar meaning, but they have done it differently technically. David has done a great job. His live performance on Conan is better though
"No Pause Videos". great idea, maybe it'll catch on. great song, btw.

David has been classicly trained since he was 15 who the eff are u

Without any hesitation this is so, so much better than the original or anyone else's cover.
By quoting only the first half of that lyric you are showing that you actually don't understand the meaning.
You had the exact same expression on your face through the entire video, making me think .. it didn't make you feel anything.
I didn't like your reaction. :(
First, you didn't even notice that there was no sound in the first 12 seconds!

Sorry you felt that way about Sara's reaction. We have tons more for you to check out.
This was my cousins favorite song, I miss you Joey Benson
