    I learned how to drive manually in a 1998 jeep Wrangler. That thing needed every gear to get up to speed. My new manual kia forte gt i can go from 2nd or 3rd straight into 6th which was new for me. I also rarely ever down shift to slow down. If im coming to a stop I usually just throw it in neutral and brake.

    Can you do more videos on skipping gears!! I absolutely love your videos and learnt everything through here. I have a problem with being relatively slower than fellow drivers.. For example, my start is so slow until I saw this video today. I've been going through gears 1,2,3 etc. and all the cars always speed pass me. My reaction time I notice is incredibly slow in a lot of scenarios and im a seasoned driver of 10+ yrs in automatic.

      usually you just turn to limiter 1st so 60-100kmph depending on ratio, if its 60kmph in 1st of course shift the gear to 2nd and turn it limit or 100kmph, once at highway speed, simply depress the clutch and select 5th or 6th (top gear) and release the clutch to be a normal driver that wear components in the shift mechanism/forks for no reason doing mindless shifting

    Should you try and avoid block gear changing, and try to drop one gear at a time as much as possible? Because dropping down gears gives a bigger engine break, so would you ask your students to always try to anticipate and try to drop one gear at a time, and only do block change when there's not enough time and need a quick stop?

    I love coming back to this video - I recently passed, my instructor taught me to skip gears up for dual carrigeways and downshift when coming off them and onto roundabouts and i've thought it was a good and useful technique - however, a family member who i drove with before my test, told me not to, are there any reasons NOT to downshift or any old ways of driving that were taught that meant some people advise against it? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  • @braveyoutube5467
    @braveyoutube5467 2 роки тому +5

    As far as i know it's okay to skip gears as long as your gear and the speed of the car are in the matching range. while normal braking it's better to reduce your gear one by one according to the speed your car is reducing to without letting go of the clutch pedal , so in case if you don't want to stop the car completely and accelerate , you can let go of the clutch pedal and be in the right gear.

      That can be a good idea. How long you pause at the bite point is completely variable and depends on how out of sync the engine is with the wheels/gearbox.

    There is a theory question saying that missing out gears saves fuel. Is this true despite the fact you accelerate in lower gears, which usually uses more fuel?

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 роки тому +4

      It's not really true as you have to accelerate more in a low gear which uses more fuel. But if you have done this then skipping to the high gear will be more fuel efficient than doing one gear at a time. Usually I will do this if I've had to accelerate hard to overtake something, then I'll skip to the highest gear possible for economy.

Ex. i'm going with 5th gear at 80km/h and after i reach about 100meters to stop, i lift the gas pedal and let the car to stop by itself (30-40 km/h). After about 20meters where i have to stop, i hit the break and reach 20/25 km/h, then i press clutch and shift to 2nd gear. Is this bad for car?

    I daily my S2000. Is it okay to skip gears going from 1 to 3 and then to 5 when accelerating normally or does this harm the transmission by not using gear 2? Every time I switch from 1 to 2, it's too jerky. I would have to hold on to the bite point for a second if I'm upshifting from 1 to 2.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 роки тому +1

      You will use more fuel as you will need to go faster in 1st but if the gear goes in easy there shouldn't be a problem. Generally you tend to skip from gear 2 onwards though as the jump for the gearbox from 1st to 3rd is quite dramatic.

      @@ConquerDriving So, would it be just wise to go from 1st to 2nd?

    • @EdgarMendezz
      @EdgarMendezz Рік тому

      @@Luis7Ong I'm no expert but I'd say just try 1st to 2nd and practice. I also notice on my honda accord 1994 front wheel drive, that 1st gear also goes to about 13 mph at nearly 3000 rpm. But I do 1st gear then 2nd gear and 3rd, then 4th gear. I really can't think of why to skip gears other than to go fast if you're racing someone (at a safe legal location haha). But for city driving and lots of cops around I guess someone could call that reckless driving or I may be wrong lol. I don't mind driving fast but I am careful with the police. So I think if you just practice changing up gears quickly and smoothly you can be fast, be safe from the police, and not waste gas as well. Now let's say it was an emergency, or something then yes most definitely slam on the gas from 1st to 2nd and then just skip gears as you see fit.
      With my car I just kind of estimated a 10 mph difference between gears. Like 1st gear up to 10mph, 2nd gear 10-25mph, 3rd gear 25-35mph, 4th gear 35-45mph, and 5th gear 45mph and up. I may be kind of slow on the gear changes but I guess I just need more practice so that I can soon nearly just drop that clutch and get going.
      I really recommend you watching his other videos about quick starts, and quick up shifts. They really help, as you can see he shows you how fast he gets going by going up gears in order from 1st to 2nd 3rd and so on.
      In summary skip gears when you need that power and speed that 1st gear and 2nd provide.
      Wish you the best of luck. I'm still trying to get the hand of it too.

      To skip up a gear means you would have had to gone faster in a lower gear so it would likely increase fuel consumption overall. How much you rev the engine and how hard you press the gas pedal affects fuel consumption.
