    You got the old version. They have since moved the hole further away from the handle and the logo is on the other side. Mine opens and closes completely fine and I love it. Mine came direct from Gerber.

      The new version has a larger, rectangular over travel that I heard is designed to reduce the pressure you put on the frame lock. With the smaller, circular over travel stop, your Palm pressed against the frame lock, making it harder to open

    I just purchased this knife and I get your points and agree. It is totally not an EDC blade. However, the niche I got it for is food prep when i am camping. It will stay in my camp box and when I am grilling steaks or chicken on the grill and chopping potatoes, etc I am hoping it will perform well. That was my reason for the purchase, definitely not for EDC.

    I just mailed mine back to Gerber at the suggestion of customer support for the exact same issues. Have you attempted to use the one you got in the battlbox? If you haven't checked see if the one in battlbox has a different over travel stop and then see if that one is easier to open. That's the redesigned model and I've seen several people thumb flicking those out of the box.

    Thanks for sharing Jeff, It is definitely not my favorite battle box knife for 2018. But I did sharpen it CRAZY! Sharp & I now use it as a Straight Razor. Unfortunately this makes the EDGE weak for day to day use. I have had fun & humorous moments shaving with it. Would I regularly daily carry it. No.

    I EDC one... my go to for food prep and such. Best folding chef's knife I've used. Opens one handed as easy as any spiderco and unless you have majorly soft skin, it's not painful to open with a thumb. Washes easy, internals clean simply, all around good knife and unless you have paper thin skin, try before you count it out. This guy makes good points, but non of his issues are things I've encountered at all.

  • @evanschneider9717
    @evanschneider9717 5 років тому

    From what you said I like it, i carry a buck 110 so I’m fine with two handed open, I like it being hard to unlock because I’ve ad locks fail on me so I have a fear of that, I like very tight pocket clips because I’ve had knives like my rat 1 slide out of my pocket. I have not purchased a flatiron yet but I’m planning on it

    I 1000% agree!!!!! I hate mine. The pivot screw is cemented in. I tried to loosen it and striped the screw.... now I am stuck with a two handed opener. I contacted gerber who said send it in and if there is anything wrong they will fix it... waste of time because it will be to their spec. I am likely just going to throw mine away...

  • @pskraken333
    @pskraken333 6 років тому

    I believe I have the 2nd revision or v2 model with the updated thumb hole opening, its longer and tapers towards the front of the blade. Also an updated frame lock guide, or stabilizer. The G10 scale handle is a pretty good handle scale and it provides a pretty solid grip. The frame lock is solid and easy to manipulate but slightly awkward for smaller hands. The blade is a good quality steel but soft like you said, and its great for chopping and shaving but the edge needed attention immediately for sharpening purposes. I like the knife but its almost a novelty and not an EDC, definitely a cool knife that I'll keep in the rotation. And Jeff for the knife clip i just took a flat chisel or screwdriver and bent out the pocket clip to make it move along easier

    I've carried this knife for about 2 months. I really wish I could've got the newer version. I've wanted to try to loosen the pivot screw or lubricate it. I really have a love/hate relationship with it. I have a big callus on my thumb from flicking it open. It took me about 4 weeks of use before I can even get to that 'flick open' stage. And today I still have to use some wrist action. I work as a meat cutter at a grocery store so you can probably see how I was attracted to this knife lol. I'm probably going to start looking at other pocket cleavers like the CRKT ripsnort or Pilar large. The new gerber jukebox looks really interesting but before I pull the trigger on it, id want to watch some reviews about it first. I think the big problem with me (and other people) and the flatiron is that we bought it because it looked nice and we didn't really know how it would handle. I hope the jukebox isn't a disappointment, too.

    "Most uncomfortable folder in the world" from you means a lot. For someone who's owned as many knives as you have over the years to say that with no hesitation to me is shocking. Personally, I'd like to see someone like Brouse blades come out with a cleaver out of their new budget line. Their pension for great design in a flipper style would be an awesome addition to their line.

    The Gerber Flatiron. When I searched up "knife laws in China" a few years back, by my understanding and interpretations of their laws, the only type of knife that is legal to carry is under 6" of blade and has a tip of 60 degrees ( inclusive). Essentially an XXL Gerber Flatiron or a huge cleaver, either folding or fixed. The next time I visit China, I hope Gerber will make a XXL Flatiron in the $30 range.

    The Gerber 'Flatiron' Is not only a dissapointment, it's a complete rip-off of a Japanese design. The Japanese knife has been around since 2013. Artists often take from each other, but they acknowledge the other design. Credit where it's due. Even the new version of the flatiorn, is made more like the oriental version.

But the lock bar sucked with the stiffness. And my blade developed horrendous play after 2 weeks of use and I couldn't couldn't fix it because they used cheap soft screws and 10 pounds of thread locker on all of them. Now I have a tactical aluminum maraca with chewed screws.

With just a few swipes, but I had to sharpen it first. It doesn't come razor sharp out of the box, but with a little work it will be razor sharp. I paid $29.99 for mine plus shipping and handling. My cleaver is better and I paid less!

    Apparently by Gerber's standards, it's one of their best selling, most popular knives in their production other than the Gerber Strongarm & Ghostrike. One that they rave about, kinda like their center drive multitools. Just about everyone I know has a leatherman or some no name cheap $10 multitool. Another reason why I hell f'ing aint gonna buy a god damn Gerber. Only Gerber product I own and use is my Shard; and the only use for that is opening bottles.

    Always been a fan of Gerber. It's a shame they outsourced a lot of their mid and lower range products overseas.

    Dude I used to use a real straight razor as a tactical EDC , and no I wasn't a pimp. it was before tactical folders existed... talk about difficult openings ! try a black zip tie through that hole and trim it close to the lock and then try a one handed opening. trust me it will work! I saw one latched on one of nutnfancys little edcs. so credit where its due good luck p.s. its a cool looker!

    I remember seeing this knife and was like holy crap I need one! Ordered it, started fondling the knife and liked it at first. Then I tried opening it... and closing it... and attempting to clip it to my pocket... realized right then and there, why it was only like $25. Used the knife a little bit using a cleaving motion. The knife chipped right away (very small chip). I ended up trying to clean it up and gifting it to a friend, which it was barely worthy of gifting to be honest.
    EDIT: The pocket clip on this knife is hands down the WORST pocket clip I have EVER attempted to use. It's 99% useless. You have to pry it open to even use it, regardless of the type of fabric or it's thickness.

    I’ve had the same experience with it so far. Impossible to open with one hand. I love the way it looks but it shouldn’t be that difficult to open

    And here I thought Gerber would finally step up their game. Seems like they got things right on paper (nice design and features), but when you start handling the knives, their lack of experience really shows.
