About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

Good video, would have liked to get a better look at the knife after being etched.
Same. Watched the whole video for that and nothing.
Waste of time lol
I’ve done a few Damascus blades where I leave them in F.C. for a couple days. About every 6 hours I’ll pull the blade out, wire brush the corrosion off, stick her back in, repeat until I’m happy with the surface finish. It gives a very nice “Stone Age” look. Super textured. The high carbon lines become ridges, low become ravines. It’s quite beautiful. Then you finish the edge, sharpen it and it works just as well as any blade but it looks ancient.
I recommend you try it at least once.
Don't know german, but love your video's, learning alot. Mix it with grapefruit juice, vitamin c helps with cold.
Honestly I don't know how someone could unlike one of Your videos!thay are always so awsome and informative! Thanks for the videos ! Cheers from nova Scotia!
I appreciate your channel and pray for a quick recovery.
Thanks for sharing your process. I really appreciate it.
Hey Jeremy, how did you get started in the knife making business full time? It seems like it would take alot of time to get enough customer base to afford to go full-time. Any pointers for an aspiring knife maker?
One of my favorite patinas to use.
Big help thanks
Right on. Glad it helps. Cheers👍
How high a grit do you get on your blades before you use the ferric chloride? I’ve got a knife up to four hundred. Is that good enough or should I go higher before applying it
Zap the bee?? Keep him. But yeah get that wasp. Nice swing!
Great content, thanks for the videos, I am really enjoying them.
I made a ghetto taser out of one of those electric mosquito swatter/rackets. The wire mesh was all twisted, so I took it off and ran three small bolts into the plastic housing which I connected the wires to. It’s been a few years, but it ran on 2 or 3 D cell batteries. Which i converted to using and 18650 lithium ion battery found in old laptops and also added a USB C charging port to make recharging it easier. I decided to test it on myself thinking, “how bad can it be?” So I answered my question: “ahhh…worse than I thought!” wasn’t what I was thinking as those words were said aloud as if I just picked up a cast iron skillet on the burner for long enough to leave a mark. It was loud enough for my friends to just look at me and one of them, who was my chemistry lab partner, commenting, “well… at least he’s keeping the danger to himself this time. At least there’s that.” I just shook my head and went about my business. After that, I was satisfied and put it away with the rest of my novelties.
I had ideas of making it more powerful but thought better of it. Probably a good thing. It wasn’t exactly as useful as my anti theft system I made for my bike out of an electric fence power supply. Especially when I’d put my bike in positions to where a passerby thief could not resist. Which is useless now because it was used enough to where no one will try to steal my bike anymore. Guess the word got out…
Apologies for the off topic content here, but I saw the electric mosquito net (maybe that’s what it was called?) in the beginning and brought back fond memories of things I’ve put together that have worked as I thought they should (and even better) in my head…there aren’t many of those.
Okay, on with the video.
I don't know why but I really liked how the vid started with the wood stove. Keep it up.
+Kameron Stahl thank you very much. I really appreciate that!
Hope you feel better, thanks for the videos.
The reason to do short rounds with Damascus is when the layers etch at different rates you can keep the edges sharp and not over etching them. This will give you the deep chattoyance/ kaleidoscope look. Often use a Ferric chloride mix of 1 Ferric to 7 part water to keep it weak and avoid pitting on all the layers you sanded for hours. Short rounds with a weak mix and not buffing, but handsanding in between cycles will give the best look on non mono combos 👍 I know your post is about mono and a dark look just my 2 cents on short rounds and when to use them.
Thank you. I’ve never heard it explained like that. It makes sense. 🙏 cheers 👍
@@Simplelittlelife np sorry that was not written well lol, fixed some typos in last comment. Anyway love your channel thanks man 👊
Simple little life ..... I use the same echant and dilute mine with white viniger 3 to 1 3 parts being viniger. Some people use distilled water to the same mixture. This may be the reason you get a rough finish when left to lone. Also usually people do cycles in the etchant. Desired time in etchant pull it out sand it with a high grit paper re etch out finer grit paper re etch out final finish with the desired paper or other. It will give you a dark even finish. especially when doing Damascus in order to acheve a very distinguished etch very shiny. In the knife makers community its called shatoyance. Sorry about the spelling lol. Either way by doing multi etch procedures you will acheve a beautiful shatoyance. I imagine even with a carbon steel you could acheve a shatoyance. Keep in mind though you want to protect the edge from the acid especially if it is sharpened. Use nail polish for this process... Martin M&S Blades
My first job was making ferric, dump 10,000 lbs. of steel chopper scrap in the batch vessel
and pour the chlorine to it, 2hr.- steel is gone.
Holy crap has anyone ever told you you look like John Ritter...
Awesome video thanks for sharing
What ever happened to John Ridder
Great videos. I’m just getting started making knives and have makeshift tools and processing. I see you use a portable bandsaw to make some of your cuts. Just curious how you have it mounted and how you have the work surface mounted? Would like to know what kind of blades you use too. Thanks.
First, you method of pest control is awesome, have you ever seen the Bug-a-salt? Check that one out. Second, have you ever considered using .22 Magnum casings for scale pins? I think that would make a pretty nifty use "recycled" material. You could do "hollow" pins and peen them over.
Cr1ck3t what is scale pins
Love your shop I've got the same thing going on 👊👊
Great video thanks.
Nice informatic video. What's that fan thingy and how is it rotating on its own, couldn't see a mechanism.
Love the intro..feel bad for the hornet.lol
I wanted to see the hornet.
Take care of yourself and nice video.
are your knives no longer for sale? I LOVE that small fixed blade you just etched! for sale?
If you can get hydrochloric acid then you could easily make ferrochloride using your ferric dust.
I also use with an aquarium pump and airstone...keeps a circulation...
Simple Little Life, thanks for keeping the great content coming! I'll let you know, since you made a video mentioning we should watch the ads I've been making sure to let the ads run and not skipping them immediately like I used to!! Now, question for you, what do you think about the patina on that knife as far as food safety, I've got my first set of knives about 50% compete and this has been on my mind a lot! Does it rub off with constant use at all? Also one last thing, idk if there are any additional fees or something on the Ferric Chloride in your area. I definitely didn't pay anywhere close to $40 for it, but that was at Microcenter in Ohio, you should really shop around online or check another store!
Fick
I love the intro music. Who does it?
Great editing job on this one! keep it up
Great video I hope you feel better soon.
Super old video so I hope to get a reply....I’m using the same ratio of Ferric Chloride (same brand too) to Bragg apple cider vinegar. Tried etching 1075 and 1095 for 3, 5, 7, & 10min tonight and it’s coming out a medium gray. How do I get the rich black here?
I will often do 20 minutes or so. I even will do 1 dunk at 20 minutes. Wipe odd the black reside and do one more dunk for 5-10. Different steels etch differently also. I haven’t done acid etching on many 10-series steels but I know that there is a huge difference in my results between Nitro-V and CPM154 with the 154 not getting nearly as dark. Maybe try a slightly longer soak or multiple soaks? Wish I had a better answer for you but I hope you get it sorted 👍
Hey Jeremy I was wondering if you have ever used 5160 (spring steel) and weather or not you think it is a good steel
Isn't spring steel a high carbon steel? If it is, it should be (at the very least) able to hold a good edge for a while as well as being a good steel to acid etch (high carbon steel etches/patinas(?) Fast, like it interacts "faster" with acids)
I like 5160 for longer blades where you need a bit of flex and toughness. I make a small edc with it and it turned out very well. Not as hard as say 1095, so it doesn't hold an edge for as long, but still good 👍
Love that little sheepsfoot design knife! I just bought a new smaller knife to use as my edc belt knife. Hoping next year to pick one of these up from your store... +++
The video is quiet old but wondering if you have had much luck using vinyl when etching? If I did a 70/30 mix to match yours do you think a vinyl used for decals would be sufficient to withstand the acid during etching?
I really appreciate ur knife making channel. Im a newbie and im really havin a tremendously terrible time with my bevels. I have a 1x30 and ive made a bevel jig. Every time i try to make a knife, one bevel is aways decent and the other one isnt. I adjust the jig for the off side, and then i really mess it up. Any tips???
+Ian Byron I had that too when I started and I found that I had to make sure that everything was even and the same on both sides when I clamped it. The other thing I've learned is that one side (for me it's when I'm holding the stock in the right hand) is always easier and more consistent than the other side. Keep at it, keep thinking about it and it should come to you. I wish you all the best with this. Cheers, Jeremy. 👍
Simple little life, where can I get one of those knives specifically if I wanted to do that
You can use industrial or cleaning vinegar which works good. Thanks for the video Jeremy. Hope you feel better. Take care.
What strength/acidity percentage? I can buy at home Depot at 30%. Should I dilute further?
YES! MAN KIND 1 HORNETS 0! lovin it my friend im a big guy myself an i turn into quite the ninja when they come around haha the guys on my job site love it lol anyways im going to enjoy another one of your videos :D God bless !
I just spent 3 hours making a simpler jig, welding together a new platen, and welding a big platform to work with. Platform is level and im still having the same problem. That's what i get for buying a HF 1x30".
Don't use WD-40 for corrosion resistance! it has corrosive properties. Use 3 in 1, or light machine oil.
Ryan Pfeiffer 3/1 works very well longterm too. And its dirt cheap.
Hope you'll get better soon!
Would white vinegar also be decent for mixing with the ferric chloride? I’m about to do my first acid etch and stone wash & just want to make sure my mixtures work before ruining something or realizing that my ferric chloride is no longer any good b/c of what I used to dilute it with.
Hey Jeremy, I think I finally got the uneven bevel problem solved for now. I was able to get even bevels on both sides of the third knife that I'm in the process of making. One more question if I may: I'm trying to make a bushcraft knife; when sanding before heat treat, how do you sand the blade in a way that wont kill (or weaken) the look of the bevel that you made. I've watched your bushcraft knife video like 30 times and your finished knife looks great; you can still see that scandanavian style grind in your finished product.
I've limited experience but after aicd etching and cold gun blue I'm preferring the blue results.
How can you remove the factory stonewash finish from a knife (Spyderco Shaman)? thanks for your videos!
Is it possible to acid etch a metal that has a dark finish already? Just learning.
I was wondering, if you have a knife that's as sharp as you wanted and you force a patina do you ruin the edge? Since you have all that controlled oxidation on the edge now?
We have here 30°c in north africa.Good luck man.
can i obtain this finish with stainless steel knifes?
I thought you couldn't mix ferric and cleaners? I'm new to this and trying to learn what's what
Just out of curiosity: will blades treated in this chemical be food safe? My EDC is carbon steel, so I’d like to treat it for aesthetics and rust prevention, but I use it to cut food, daily.
Will this also work for stainless knife screws?
...THANKS FOR DOING THIS GREAT DEMO/TUTORIAL!!! ...
FYI: IF YOU CAN HAVE SOMEONE TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, BRIEFLY, THE WASP WILL DROP DOWN IMMEDIATELY, TO THE FLOOR, OR SURFACE BELOW, THE LIGHT, (IT WILL USUALLY FLY TOWARD THE FLUORESCENT LAMP), AND, THEN YOU CAN TRAP/SMASH/SWAT IT, BY FINDING IT RIGHT THERE, WHEN YOU TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON, ... BUT ACT AS SOON AS THE LIGHT IS RESTORED, OR IT WILL RECOVER AND FLY AGAIN!!....
I have a question. I have some micarta. And I just started making knives a couple months ago. And so far all my knives have been wood scales. But I want to make some micarta ones. I have a good respirator. But I don't have any way to get rid of the micarta dust. Is that a big deal? Can I just vacuum it up? And is there anything I should be concerned about working with micarta. I'm working in my basement and I don't want my family to get sick from it. And I can't find much online about the hazards of micarta. Other than its bad for you to breath in.
Think about the ingredients. Any dust and particulate is unhealthy including sawdust. You don't want the dust sucked into your ventilation system. If you could take your tools outside and built the handles your lungs would thank you down the road.
Nick Y. This is two months old but what is a cheap respirator that will work well as I am a beginner and don’t want to spend a lot
Go to Lowe's and get one!
Can you use copper wire to hang your knives in the acid? Thanks
would using baking soda and water work to neutralize the acid? hope you feel better soon!!
In germany the ferric chloride is like 15 bucks 1l bottle
Water pump pliers?!
Lol 😂
Made my frist knife. IM going to acid etch it today ... Hope I dont etch my fingers.....
Wear some latex gloves! :D Protection is elementary. By the way - I'd really like to see the final product!
Absolutely..
me too please
Dave Erving Evader Knives I used some gloves lol... by the way .. love your shop video.
Thanx Jeremy!!
Will the ferric acid ever go old? Like for the new knife maker that will only make a few knives over the years.
I wonder how this will do with brass and other materials.
Aaron Cross why not just shake up the container?
Feel better brother cheers
Thanks for the video how long do you place the blade in the rock Tumbler for? Can we see the finished product? I know each kind of steel takes the etching differently. What kind of steel are you using? Thanks
+Steve Lee I'll show you the finished product in the video I'll film tomorrow, how's that? This is O-1. Cheers👍
Good job bro
Thank you
Welcome bro
Hope you get better soon.
You may have stated it, what is the mix ratio and are you still etching this way today
Yeah I use 75% ferric chloride and 25% apple cider vinegar. Still using that mix today and still getting results that make me happy👍
What is that fan on your stove and how does it work?
Try the following recipe next time you’ve got a sore throat coming on:
Put the juice of half a lemon and one tablespoon each of olive oil and honey into a cup, fill it with hot water and drink it while it’s still fairly hot. Works wonders!
Get better soon. Nice videos.
Feel better soon Brother.
Do you heat treat the knife before you dip it in the ferric chloride?
Yes.
Simple Little Life thank you sir 🤝 Been learning a lot from your vids. I am a rookie knife maker. Keep the content coming 🤘🏽
Is it possible to remove an etch? Im looking to buy this knife but it has a really ugly and large etch on it :/
I hope you feel better
I get my ferric chloride from a supplier in Lindsay ON. and it;s only $19.99 for 1L of ready to use acid. $40 is a lot for the same size container
Any good sites to get material from in the states ... i found some just need something good
I wonder if he knows you can go on Amazon and get ferric chloride for like 10 bucks for that same bottle
ben joseph That's what I was just thinking! I bought some at a Microcenter near me for about $10. @SimpleLittleLife this can be the subject of your next vlog regarding theft 😂
Everything in Canada is more expensive. Even when you order online, Shipping goes way up👆
does it have to be apple cider vinegar? or can it just be distilled white vinegar?
I’m not sure. I just tried apple cider because I had it on hand and it works so well I’m just sticking with it 👍
SWEET!!
wow. it is warmer in norway now than 3 degrees c
Can u pls make a video about how to make sheathes for a blade.
Did you show the final product?
is that a stainless steel blade?
Does acid etching help with corrosion resistance?
Would this work on a farrier rasp knife?
What is that thermal fan that you showed at the beginning of the video?
looks like an ecofan. Just google "wood stove fan" and you should have a few things like it come up
This about the darkest acid wash I've seen does the steel make a difference with how dark I just seen a guy do a zero tolerance for 15 minutes pure pcb etch not even close to your results is the fact that he uses pcb and you're using pure ferric chloride which is what I have
Just letting you know your official website and your knife store website is not working . Did not know if your doing work on them or not . Just a heads up .
Thanks so much for the heads up! It seems strange because everywhere I check it seems to be working just fine. I'll keep trying to figure out what is going on. Thanks again! Cheers👍
Simple Little Life I checked again same thing happening I will email you a screen shot of what it says
Hey Jeremy! I tried to heat treat my a knife out of 1095 steel today, and I failed. Should I do something differently than you normally do with the heat treat, or should I do as before but be more careful? Btw I do it with coal.
Waldemar Kaaling keep checking it constantly. Make sure you bring that blade at least 50 degrees past non magnetic. 1095 isn't a very easy steel to work with early on, 01 and 5160 are a lot easier steels to start out with. Good luck
Also, make sure your quench oil is up to temp. Heat up a couple of railroad spikes to critical (or close) and drop 'em in the oil until it heats up to around 120 to 140 degrees farenheit.

Does anybody know if this would work on cts xhp?
Great video! Thanks for the info. Nice work! Subbed fo sho!
Cheers
Use the Force!!! LOL!!!
Question. So you do this etching on high carbon steel, i take it, to prevent it from rusting? Am i correct? Cuz i'm new to this knife making thing and i made a knife out of an old file and i want it not to rust. Would ferric chloride work in my situation? Thanks!
Yeah that’s one of the reasons. I think it would work fine on an old file.
@@Simplelittlelife why didn't you show the goods at the end of the vid???? Big fan, you do amazing clean work btw.
@@Simplelittlelife why didn't you show the goods at the end of the vid???? Big fan, you do amazing clean work btw.
what country are you from?? not trying to be rude
I’m wanting to replicate the effect seen on older knifes, duller colour and very pitted but still holding its shape. The blade I have I hand forged so it has its own pits already, but I want more even ones if possible. The pits are also filled with that black scaly stuff (I think it’s called mill scale though I may be wrong) and I can’t get it out of the pits, any suggestions?
Cool, thanks for sharing.
1L of ferric chloride in Croatia is around 13$ :P
