I highly recommend Lil’ Gator Game. The game focuses on exploration, talking to goofy characters, and the joy of play! It really made me feel like a kid again. A Short Hike is also lovely.
Another favorite of mine is the original Chibi Robo. You play as a tiny robot exploring a human-sized house and learning about all the drama between the toys. It’s so fun to learn how to navigate a familiar environment in totally new ways.

every few months or so, I'll start playing a game (usually an indie game these days, but I also do a lot of retro gaming) that really grips me. I'll play it a bunch for only a week or two, but during that time I'll really drink deep all of the things that it has to offer. a lot of these games have very quickly turned into my absolute favorites, and they've formed something of a backbone of what I want to find in games. I'd like to share a few of them here, since you asked. I could talk for hours about any of these, so in the interest of brevity I'll just include their titles (unless somebody wants to know more about a particular title that jumps out at them!).
    1. CrossCode
    2. Assault Android Cactus
    3. Shining in the Darkness
    4. Hypnospace Outlaw
    5. Myst
    6. Outer Wilds
    7. Return of the Obra Dinn
I enjoyed your video. I've approached some things in a similar way to you, although I've thought about it using different terms. I think that taking things slowly and letting the game speak for itself is the best way to play (though breaking the content embargo after you beat the game to find the things you might have missed is very fun too!)

    • @g00bleck
      @g00bleck  Місяць тому

"content embargo" is such a great way to describe it! And I definitely agree, watching all the content on a great game is definitely a great part of the experience, I should have been clearer on that in the video. I specifically love to watch Zelda theories after I finish a game ^^

Tunic is a really cool game because the entire thing is just super cryptic. It reminded me of when I was a little kid, and I had no expectations or frame of reference for anything that could happen in a game, so I had to engage with every little thing at face value to make any progress. Most games I play, I'm thinking things like "oh, this is a like the classic Resident Evil games", "ah, so this game is designed like Devil May Cry", "hm, there is definitely some Left 4 Dead inspiration here" but Tunic was designed in a way where I couldn't just look at past games and use them to guess everything coming ahead. You've gotta figure everything out on your own. The game is almost entirely written in a fictional language you can't understand too, so you even have to guess at what the game's trying to tell you. Sort of like not knowing how to read at all, which is the biggest thing that makes it nostalgic for me. Also it's one of the only games of this era that leaves you writing a whole notebook keeping track of progress, and I really wish there were more of those. The best part is how it's stuffed with secrets to a point where it's impossible for any individual to find them all independently, which is a testament to how abstract and bizarre some of the puzzles are and an unexpectedly great segue into a sweet online community.
Side note, another game I picked up is Noita, which also tells you nothing about it's world or mechanics. It's this roguelike where you get magic wands, customize them with magic spells, and then go into this harsh and unforgiving roguelike with real time physics. It's so good for experimenting, the spells can be so chaotic.

The customization bit hits hard. I’ve been playing a Pokémon fangame with default assets, and I’ve been designing my own UI assets for everything as I play. It definitely has extended my attention with the game (as well as make it 2x longer to beat).

thank you so much for this video. i've been kinda off and on with how i approach games. i like the optimization, but with some games, i just want to try and enjoy things and take it more slowly. i think a keyt thing that's missing for me is a sense of wonder. the things that happen in games don't surprise me anymore, because i've seen something like it before.
recently i picked up player persona 5 and was having a blast. it feels so fresh compared to things that i normally play. i think i should try to step outside my comfort zone more and play games that i'm not familiar with.
your tip about breaks is also really good. as a kid, i knew my limits with games. i would play for a while, sure, but i would always spend time away from a screen during my day. it's hard now, because so much adult time is taken up by work and obligations, but carving out some time to just, do something else will help revitalize that spark i think.
thank you again. i'm so glad your video showed up in my recomended

      @g00bleck  Місяць тому +1

@@Zavisti thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really glad this helped! 💖 That missing wonder really is huge. Games, by their nature as multi medium interactive experiences, really do affect people in meaningful ways. We're coming to a time when a large number of people who grew up with games are facing adulthood, and recontextualizing the gaming experience is hard! It challenges us to examine our formative memories and figure out what made them so wonderful, which is harder than figuring out why something is sad, in my opinion.
I wish you the best of luck in your journey 🫶

Since I don't have much to say on the overall theme of the video I'll talk about two specific points:
First of all I whole heartedly agree with the Pokémon take! Using the same team each run is limiting to say the least. I've never had much fun playing games the easiest/most efficient way, so using a unique set of (Not always that good) Pokémon is always a blast! For example, my Legends Arceus team has a Budew named Budew Holly and the strongest mon on my team is a sandy cloak Wormadam called Fast Fashion. I'll be sure to try to spread "Gooblocke" around!
Second of all I will keep in mind the games you suggested up there in mind! But I can't say for how much I'll like them since I can't actually enjoy Stardew Valley; it's too stressful for me. But still, maybe one day I'll try 'em!

      @g00bleck  Місяць тому

AHH thank you so much! Gooblocke is like my saving grace right now with Pokemon. Budew Holly is a genius name, thank you specifically for sharing that!!
I've heard a lot of people say Stardew is overwhelming! And I agree, it definitely can be in the beginning, and there's even some tight moments for me even as an experienced player. Night in the Woods and Psychonauts are WAY simpler in terms of gameplay mechanics, if you're interested in those.

Great video, and the note about the setting like playing on an actual handheld/console (GBA/DS on the floor is relatable haha) is really true.
All these little things can help you get immersed in a video game, and some are best played alone, in a quiet room, without distractions.
I haven't really fallen out of enjoying video games but this vid popped up in my recommended and wanted to see what you had to say, and I found myself agreeing with a lot of the things you said.
I've also heard people saying how games aren't fun anymore but I think it might be a combination of people just not looking in the right places (AAA games as a whole right now are in a shaky spot with formulaic approaches and half-finished releases) and also not dedicating the proper time and attention needed to enjoy a game.

Customizing games CANNOT be understated, since it too has made life much more enjoyable, both in and out of games. I make up rules all the time for myself according to my design sensibilities and where I'm at right now. I don't mean giving names to things, but I do mean just downloading mods, cheating, skipping overpowered strategies, not minmaxing but roleplaying, choosing not what's best but what's most fun, etc. Dont compare to others, so don't go for regular high scores, but rather add extra lives or something else in the game so I only compete with myself in the style of play I prefer, be it easier, more difficult, or just different. I think more people would enjoy this style of play but are stuck in their ways, as I was.
Okey okey last comment - my god how wonderful customizing th game world in Chicory was magical. The game start black and white and then you fill in everything. But I would say don't go all out on that until after you get a tool that makes it much more manageable, maybe five hours in.

As adults and in gaming culture, I've just felt like everything is pushed to a standard of everything needs to be efficiently done in the best time saving method possible, but when I played games as a kid there wasn't any time saving notion you had in your brain. You just played the game without the thought of efficiency. Got a few recommendations, I'll go for one of each genre that i can remember at 01:00
    Sandbox:
Modded minecraft - if you can name it there's a mod or five for it, and with the right mods you can turn minecraft into almost any genre.
Dinkum - stardew valley meets minecraft, set in legally distinct Australia.
Terraria - flat minecraft, with a lot more combat focus for progression (also has a lot of mods).
    ARPGs/JRPGs:
Megaman battle network - recommending the whole series here because the combat system is that damn solid (excusing some early installment weirdness)
Dragon quest IX - it's dragon quest, with a post game more or less focused on dungeoncrawling. Was multiplayer focused, but not sure how to make that work with emulators yet, so here be dragons.
    Metroidvanias:
Bloodstained: ritual of the night - classic castlevania feel made by the guy behind the originals, truly a worthy successor to SotN and aria of sorrow.
    FPS:
Fallout new vegas/4 - if you like the more story and lore focused games, go for fallout new vegas. If you like sandbox and survival elements more, go for 4. Listing them both together for a reason though.
Team Fortress 2 - certified hood classic that recently got rid of a massive bot problem.
Payday 2 - what left 4 dead is to zombie movies, payday 2 is to heist movies. Get a few friends together and make some helmets fly.
    Roguelikes:
Enter the gungeon - fun game, even if i keep dying because skill issue.
Crypt of the necrodancer - roguelike that plays and controls like a rhythm game.
    Other:
Pokemon rom hacks - there's plenty out there, if you can't find one to your tastes you'll be the first.
Space station 13(14?) - there's always some really weird shit going on.
Moon base alpha - made by nasa to simulate life and problem solving on the moon, the fun's mostly from shitposting with friends using the in game tts (john madden).
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley - rpgmaker game that's not finished yet last time i checked, but is in early access on steam. Good story about a fucked up couple of siblings.
That should about cover most people's tastes i think. Can drop more recommendations for specific genres if y'all want.

I think something that kinda got missed here is… well, the whole point of a video game and that point is enjoyment and fun, oftentimes I felt really disheartened playing most games I had because I (who is mainly an Xbox player, and usually this was mainly a problem with Xbox people online) have some disabilities, and because of that I usually played on the easiest difficulty available, but then when I started playing with other people, they would really insult me and judge me, even mock me and call me out and even at some points, gatekeep me from joining anyone.. for just making the game actually enjoyable to me, and so I think another thing to add is that you should just play the game your own way, don’t let other people stop you from just doing something like this, and along with that, give yourself a break in terms of changing up the game, you don’t have to practically be forced to play the hardest difficulty or playing a game you don’t want to, and the same probably goes for genres, one of my disabilities has to do with processing, so FPS games are by far one of the most difficult things to play for me, along with horror games which my friend kept trying to get me into, which was difficult considering how much of my life has practically been a slow-paced horror game, so I think another part to add to this list is knowing your limits and trying new games accordingly, of course I’m not gonna play the newest Halo game because it’s honestly just too much for me, but there are some amazing indie games out there that I’m gonna try now (some of them I probably don’t even know about) and I mean, to be honest I think most of the list in the actual video is probably easier for the more abled gamers to really do, but there are still some really good points in it, such as the thing about location and comfort and the thing about making the game fun for you specifically (to be honest the way you suggested how to play the pokemon games was a bit much for me, especially with the talking to every NPC and Investing time into the side content, I’ve actually been doing that already in my playthroughs and unfortunately it’s actually done quite the opposite effect for me, as I have the constant nagging feeling in the back of my head that if i don’t 100% complete the game then I’m wasting the money I/my parent are really needing for important things) and I think also what you said about other players opinions (not exactly sure how that would work in an online multiplayer only game like Overwatch but yeah) I think is a good idea, awhile back I wanted to play this one Wii game and even though I liked it everyone online was really trashing on it which I think made me stop playing, anyways I can’t wait to see more content from you.

I've always done that but its lead to me not being able to use certain pokemon at all because they weren't native to the region, now I wanna start using returning pokemon way more in hopes that I can get out of the mindset of being obligated to only use new things
I do have another issue now however where I constantly teambuild ideas instead of doing what I use to do which was play the game and used what I felt like, I've been trying to start sword again for a few days now and i havent even started it yet simply because of this teambuilding thing despite the one thing I didnt teambuild first (a slurpuff) being a definite teammember instead of one of the ideas i randomly have and its such a hard habit to break hhhhh

@@junglejuicejuno aw yeah that's tough. Have you tried a nuzlocke? That way you have to team build on the fly. You could always come up with your own rules too!

There are so many pitfalls you put on yourself when you sit down to do a task. For me in Sword because I struggled finishing the DLC of Sword. I was noticing that I could enjoy the game and others could dislike it at the same time. I found myself better able to get through it, even if I'm not done yet, because I removed myself mentally from that opinion and allowed myself to form my own opinions. I would slate this as the exposure part at 4:57 in the video.
Everyone has their own pitfalls to overcome and some aren't clear at first. Maybe it's a perfectionist problem, so just accept that mistakes are going to be made and that not everything can be planned and known beforehand. Since the issue is the teambuilding try doing it on the fly rather than setting a goal and beating yourself up for not achieving it.

5:04 This is something I have a lot of trouble with. When I find a game I REALLY like, I end up consuming as much as I can on it, and that usually means diving onto the nearest available wiki and spoiling most of the game's secrets. On the other hand, games like Noita are really tough to decipher on your own, and while I liked the game a lot before learning how to really use the game's systems, I didn't love it until I learned how chainsaws worked. I don't think there's a perfect middle ground for something like this, especially if there's a huge amount of technical nuance in a game, but sometimes a small nudge really opens up what a game can be.
On that note, play Noita. I liked the game even before I knew why everything was exploding

Huh, I've actually hit on most of your pokemon rules on my own. Really liked the video overall.
But I'd not call your ruleset opposite to the Nuzlocke, not really.
While the modern impression Pokemon UA-cam might give you of a Nuzlocke is that of a constant arms race between experts on who can still finish the hardest game with the most restrictions, where anything that distracts from the strategic challenge is eliminated (avoiding optional content and battles, cheating in Rare candy, naming pokemon after their capture place...) the traditional challenge only has two rules:
1.Only the first encounter may be caught. This essentially hits the same spot as your "try to use pokemon you haven't used before" rule, trying to keep the player from just building optimised teams and getting them to really use new pokemon.
    2. Pokemon are out once they faint. And while I would guess this is where the idea of a Nuzlocke being opposite in goal to your rules comes in, it's also where I would disagree. The fact of the matter is, as a child, pokemon games used to have stakes to me my mind can't conjure anymore, and were more challenging to overcome before I knew the type chart from memory and learned the power of set up moves.
Nuzlocke rules add some of that back in, and so for me at least, rules that impose an additional challenge/penalty for failure are big part of recapturing the impact those games had on me as a child.
I think challenge rulesets in general can be a strong tool in recapturing the feelings of victory and triumph once you realise that a game you loved was, in fact, made for children with unfinished brains and decade(s) less experience in using fine motor skills.
For example, I'm currently replaying pokemon ranger 2, and after discovering that drawing circles on the DS touchscreen is not that hard, I'm limiting myself to only using pokemon I captured with an A Rank and resetting after a boss if I can't manage the same, and it has brought a lot of excitement back into otherwise rather boring gameplay.

@@mightytoast2693 this is a really good point about nuzlockes. I'm kind of using the term loosely here, and the reason I called my gooblocke ruleset the opposite of a nuzlocke is because in a nuzlocke, and their associated challenges, is you don't get to use many Pokemon, and people in a nuzlocke don't typically take the game slowly in general. Slowly with caution, yeah, but not for comfort. The goal of a nuzlocke is to challenge, while the goal of a gooblocke is to comfort. To play it like it's new, even if it's not ^^

@@g00bleck good point on the "not many pokemon" bit. Thats not really something I notice because my team generally changes very little during a playthrough anyway.
Even without the one per route restriction, I use maybe ten different Pokemon for any length of time.
My most recent pokemon Champ to beat was Geeta, and half my team was from before the first Gym.
