Trekkies delight! Brilliant Spanish soprano Laura Ruhí Vidal (www.lauraruhividal.com/) 'warms up' for her appearance with the Rainer Hersch Orkestra by singing a parody of the theme to the original series of Star Trek. With its original cast of characters: James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Leonard 'Bones' McCoy (DeForest Kelly), Scotty (James Doohan), Sulu (George Takei) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), this was one of the most beloved TV shows of the sixties. The "Theme from Star Trek" (originally scored under the title "Where No Man Has Gone Before") was composed by Alexander Courage. The original soprano in the studio recording was Loulie Jean Norman.
Thanks to all those people who have posted lyrics. Laura Ruhí Vidal either didn't know them or preferred not to sing them. They probably mean even less to a Spanish-speaker than they do if you are an English-speaking native. Anyway, for the record, they are:
Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.
According to the web: "Without Courage's knowledge, Gene Roddenberry, who created the original Star Trek TV series, wrote these lyrics to Courage's tune, not in the expectation that they would ever be performed but in order to claim a 50% share of the music's performance royalties. Although there was never any litigation, Courage later commented that he considered Roddenberry's conduct unethical. Roddenberry was quoted as responding, "Hey, I have to get some money somewhere. I'm sure not gonna get it out of the profits of Star Trek." Well, he got that wrong.
This performance took place at Cadogan Hall, London as part of the Rainer Hersch Orkestra's 'New Year's Eve Bash 2019'. Tickets for the 2020 NYE Bash are on sale here cadoganhall.com/whats-on/rain... The Rainer Hersch Orkestra is composed of violins, violas, cellos, double bass, clarinet, French horn, piano and percussion - together, they create the funniest classical music on the web. What an outstanding performance! I got goosebumps all over!
Red T is right: Nerd-Brain's and Music Brain's excitement at the same time. Even better than that star-Wars-Flashmob in Cologne, which was my all-time-number-one-Nerd-Music-goosebump-favourite! :)
Thank you so much for your fabulous work!
where can I find this??
I'd never heard of this, so I did a UA-cam search for 'Star Wars flash mob Cologne.' It's great, you'll love it!

I love that the orchestra plays the first three notes and you immediately hear about 5% of the audience understand exactly what's going to happen.
hahahah Trekers inside....
The excitement was FELT!!!!!
Its just one of those pieces.
As soon as the bassist touched bow to string, more like :o)

The laughter was from instant recognition of that famous theme song...not because her singing it was a "joke." I smiled along with the audience. She did a fabulous job bringing that little soprano solo to life, again.
Tears in my eyes as a Trekkie and a classical vocalist. Love this.
musician here and guilty as charged cried me a river. i Like, OLE'!

Contrabass (double bass) "tapping my bow on my music stand" in agreement. Both Star Trek, and orchestral music, are about what we can all accomplish together.
Okay...I´m NOT trekkie...but a chill runs down all my back, and some tears comes from my eyes when I hear this performance...
Repeat, I´m not a trekkie, but now I feel the need to build an enterprise´s diorama...or adopt a tribble...
That's an homage, not a parody. Live long, and prosper.

That's NOT a parody, that's a bloody brilliant interpretation. A Parody makes fun of something.
Exactly ^^
Well said bud
Exactly. It was a BRILLIANT interpretation of such a classic tv show's theme song!
Absolutely. It's a fine performance of an excellent piece of music. I was bit surprised that so much of the audience didn't seem to recognize it until she started singing - the orchestra seemed to be playing it from the start pretty much the way it was written.
Agreed
Holy Moly! As a Star Trek fan that performance by Spanish Soprano Laura Ruhí Vidal was beyond Antares. Bravo!
I'm a Trekkie for 45 years... Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Spock, Bones, Scotty and Gene would smile now while watching this. And look at her Vulcan greeting at 2:44. :)
Thx:: I did not notice the Vulcan "Live Long & Prosper" gesture upon initial casual viewings -- was too focused on her face mouth! ♡♡ What a playful gem!
All stand for the Trekkie national anthem.
Assalutely.

May you live long and prosper.
Still standing.
Spot the Trekkies in the audience who go it from the first four notes (while the rest of them got it when she started to sing - bravo to her for her performance too!)
Yeah, it's fun to see the penny drop.
The musically advanced Trekkies got that even on the first note (despite needing four of them). The instruments being used are just too suspicious.
I wouldn’t call myself a trekkie, but those four notes at the beginning are unmistakable
@@johno3326 : Check the beginning of "The Wizard of Speed and Time."
"Bravo" is for male performers. Use "brava" for females :D
When they said Star Trek and classical soprano I knew it had to be from the old series. And yes, she did a brilliant job! Encore!
She's the real deal! OMG! This takes me back to my childhood and watching every episode. What an angelic ethereal voice. What a gift! My day is now complete. :)
She boldly went where no one has gone before.
She boldly sang what no soprano has sung before.
She went where no MAN has gone before. It was TNG that altered the phase to "no one".
Dammit, Jim. I'm a soprano, not a doctor.
Hahahahahahahaha - that was CLASSIC
LMAO. Perfect!
Right on!!!!!

I love your comment :D
50 odd years after a low budget syfi TV series was dropped, this wonderful tear bringing performance reminds us how deaply Star Trek is engrained in the hearts of the people of this planet, the smart ones with taste and obviously not the TV programing directors. Star Trek still Living Long and Prospering!
No parody! She just preformed one of the most iconic Sci-fi television music pieces in history; and did it Beautifully I think.
She made the geek in me happy!
🖖🤓💖🎶
I love how she did the Vulcan Salute at the end. I see some people here also noticed that. 🖖
A real Star Trek fan wouldn't miss it.
I saw that immediately. I’m still unable to make that hand gesture.
@@Marchant2
Use tape...
Yes loved it.
@@Marchant2 I am able to make that hand gesture left-handed. I am actually right-handed.
She may not speak English, but we *ALL* understood her perfectly. No need for a universal translator for that iconic opening.
she speaks english.
@@riskinhos Yes. But she sings Star Trek!
Haha it's all part of the act, all opera singers speak 3 languages minimum lol
...nor the vulcan hand sign at the end !
Well duh^^ she speaks music, that is a universal language.
This is thrilling for me. I watched the very first original episode of Star Trek aired in 1966 and fell in love with Star Trek, and have been a Trekki ever since. This is the first time I have heard someone do that original theme song on stage. What a beautiful rendition of the original piece. Wow. My heart runneth over.........
My God, it instantly transported me to my teens in front of my black and white TV!!! One of the versions of the series' opening theme. To this day I am a fan of the classic crew of the old USS Enterprise.
Transported ;)
Wow she nailed it. This song is so emblematic of not just Star Trek, but the entire television era of that time.
Yes!!
I remember that Star Trek was uniquely different than almost any other television theme of the day.
And she even gave the Vulcan salute at the end which is actually reminiscent of an ancient Hebrew han't symbol the symbolizes the Split Rock which gave the Hebrews water after they made their escape from Egypt.
@@44hawk28 Beyond reminiscent - straight up adapted. Leonard Nimoy told of seeing the rabbi making the gesture over the congregation at synagogue and using it for the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" salute.
I remember the series because it brought back memories of visiting a friend who had the only color TV set on the block.
@@knottreel yeah those were a little scarce at the time. I remember watching the pilot and the first episode and then every episode thereafter. I believe that first episode was September 1966
Honestly, you never think about how complicated that piece of music is until you see it in action.
Or until you hear the drummer from this performance... ugh.
Awesome horn playing!
As music, it is a very serious piece written for Loulie Jean Norman.
There's all sorts of layers in the rhythm in that piece.
I did not see this coming......That was absolutely "stellar" !
As Scotty would have said: "Brought a tear to me eye".
I've heard those 4 chimes and 3 horn notes literally thousands of times. This version put a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat.
I felt the same way, which made the laughter all the more annoying!
Same
I get chills before the 4 chimes finish every time!
You forgot the goosebumps and shivers down your spine...
@@ElizabethT45 Mine is more like a tingling up my spine. But this one was really special.
It would be illogical not to like this.

I loved her handgesture at the end!
@@jimmyrun4eva885 LOL!
That was amazing. Speaking as someone with Grade VIII Conservatory vocal music training, the Star Trek theme is actually a *great* warmup piece. But fantastic. LLAP!!!
Watched this many times and only now saw the "Live long and prosper" salute - wonderful!
yes
I play the French horn, and I the day I duet this piece with an opera singer, I can officially die happy.
I hear death is not a bad thing.
Old (former) horn player nodding agreement.
@@jthepickle7 Not if you've played French horn in duet this piece with an opera singer. Otherwise, though YMMV.
The Vulcan salute at the end was such a nice touch!
My thoughts exactly.
It gave me goosebumps! I loved it!!
I still get goose pickles from her voice and all the adventures to be encountered when exploring outer space begins!
I hope I remember this and say goose pickles instead of goose pimples/bumps from now on!
They were laughing when the music started but they sure weren't laughing when it ended! Brilliant performance!
The sheet music must have had a lot of Tribble clefs.
Ouch! What did you hope to grain by that?
That's the trouble with tribbles.
you make me miss my dad!
OOOH. I blame Arne Darvin.
HAHA! HAHA ahhh crap I'm old enough to get that...
I was expecting William Shatner come on stage and say: "Space....the final frontier.....These are the Voyages of the Starship Enterprise...."
Todd A. He hates Star Trek events. More like he would do his ridiculous “Rocket Man” soliloquy! 😹
You mean, "...these....are....the voyages of.....the Starship Enterprise...".
Patrick Stewart would have been much more at home with this being a more cultured kind of person.
@@stub2022 You REALLY mean "Captain Kirk... is climbing the mountain... Why.. is he climbing the mountain?"
"make it so" :3
I don't know why, but this performance has me in tears. So beautiful.
This actually brought tears to my eyes. I love it when people are nerdy
Can't deny it's a legitimately decent warm-up song. Goes through a nice range of notes, up and down the scale. Definitely more fun to sing than standard scales.
Yeah, could catch on.
That made it all the funnier to me.
You make an excellent point there.
Too bad she skipped to an octave jump at the end instead of the last run up.
Damn it Jim! I am a doctor, not a musician!
Haha!
Love it!. The original Star Trek music is known everywhere .

That is not a parody. That is the original series theme, sung correctly.
Well, I thought Star Trek itself never sounded so good!
No it definitely wasn’t the correct theme. Sung well enough but this arrangement deviates from the original. If you compare them you’ll hear the difference. What I want to hear is the lyrics that Roddenberry wrote for it so he could get some of the royalties!
@@Studio-62 I have read those lyrics. It is better, I think, that they be quietly forgotten. Gene Roddenberry had may excellent qualities, but 'lyricist' was not among them.
