  • What do cranked vintage amps actually sound like? We’re about to find out…
Welcome to the show. What is the overdrive sound of the classic guitar amps in history? Well, we have three such beasts today to plug in and find out.
    The amps are…
    • 1956 5E6 Fender Bassman www.atbguitars.com/
    • 1961 Vox AC30 Top Boost
    • 1974 Marshall Super Bass 100 overdriveguitars.com/
Needless to say, there are NO PEDALS in the first part of the video, only a Three2One by TheGigRig to switch between the guitars.
Once we’ve cranked ‘em all to maximum, we then add a few pedals and find out if they’re actually usable in today’s world.
    Enjoy the show!
Big thanks to ATB Guitars and Overdrive Guitars for the amp loans!

One of the best sounds I've ever gotten was playing a beat to shit ES-125 downtuned and strung with flatwounds through a CRANKED 1966 Princeton. Unreal sound. Come to think of it, that amp sounded really great with an Epiphone 230T Casino too. Maybe it was just a good amp for P90's.

transistor amps (especially class a/b) always sound their worst near their clipping point .that's why home stereos are usually 100 watts so they can work on 10% -20% volume, the jc has the worst on board distortion ever made and hates drive pedals but loves multi effects. the silverface twin is too clean and bright so the breakup is very late, getting rid of the bright cap and having a high gain tube at v1/v2 helps .

4:49 This is a ‘56 Bassman, most likely circuit designation 5E6-A, which was quite different from the 5F6-A from ‘58 that everyone fawns over. Closer to something like a Bandmaster than what it would evolve into.

I've grown to really appreciate outdoor gigs because I often use an ac15c1 that can be a little too much in a pub gig but becomes too crunchy and small in an outdoor space- I've been bringing an ac30s1 (single 12 instead of dual speaker) and that thing never gives up.. when the power amp starts to overdrive it's just the most glorious textured sound.. the ac30 in this episode brought me back to that. The clean up dynamic is fantastic, my only issue is certain pronounced mids that can get overboard.. I love the more neutral sound of a fender there.. but can't beat the ac30 in monstrous big power chord saturation.. love it to my core.

Half-through, my takeaways are that turning down the volume on the guitar makes more sense when the amp is shaking the floor, and that the two of you seem very happy.

I know this show was focused on amps-and it was absolutely glorious-but my focus kept drifting to the finish on the Strat . . . It has the most wonderful soft shine, just wow.

Overdrive pedals and cranked amps is every electric guitar players fun time!! I’m finally happy with my rig. All the elements are where I like them. ….. I still bought an overdrive pedal today, just to have fun and enjoy a new sound! For me the skill is in knowing what YOU need. After you master that, everything else is just for fun!

Very few people do it now because it’s impossible with in-ears and low stage volume. And all those glorious harmonics and overtones that are generated by acoustic proximity… are just gone.
It’s one of the reasons anyone who actually gives a shit about rock n roll should refuse silent stages.
Now it’s okay to not give a shit about rock n roll of course. Music has to move on.
But. R’n’R does not exist without volume and loud guitar amps.

Couldn't afford my dream amp , a Fender Bassman just like yours (it sounded beautiful ❤) , so i brought the Fender Deville 1996 and i really love it including the overdrive and the reverb to me it sounds beautiful Contrary to many people thoughts.
That Vox sounded killer and that Gibson SG is ❤
I have new neighbours since a week ago , most days they have their music loud playing disco electronic music style then suddenly their music evaporates from the space 😂 as i crank up my Fender Deville 💪 and i think to myself to my neighbours welcome to the neighbourhood 😇

Lovely bunch of amps and cool sounds this episode, cheers guys!
The only thing I was missing from the part where you turned the amps up was bringing in the bright channel on the Marshall, which would've probably given you the amount of drive you thought was a bit strange not happening while also making it less bloated sounding.
    A great watch, nonetheless!

Awesome. I think we all have a personal, genre specific reference tone for a 'perfect' guitar tone. To me it was/is my old 68' JMP50 through 'fane power tone 60w' with a SG/P90 because of Brian Baker (Bad Religion amongst others) and Johnny 2-bags (Social Distortion). Thank you so much for conducting this 'scientific experiment'😊 love it❤

Thanks for yet another inspiring and educational episode guys. You are simply the best! Better than all... 🤩 What I would love to see, is Mick Taylor, from the Blues Implosion (what a great band name) testing a Blackface Fender Twin 65 RI (because I believe it's more stable than a vintage one) with a Matt Schofield inspired board. Get a Supreme or a Royal Blue from Mad Professor as the main Overdrive for the Strat, a Sweet Honey Overdrive for the humbuckers and your favourite wobbly, delay and reverb. I wonder if the choice of overdrive and boost we saw today is too fiddly and have too many choices. My two cents is that you don't wanna bend down to adjust a pedal in the middle of a gig. In fairness it's also marginal what is to be gained from that (pun not intended). I bet that would also work wonders with the Two Rock. The Marshall sounded great, but I'm not convinced it is THE tone. And I really hope to be able to attend one of your gigs no matter what amp and board. I just love your playing man. All the best from Norway! Cheers.

I know you guys don't really get into things like the OX that much, but I've been using one in a small studio where cranked mic'd amps aren't always an option and it has allowed me to crank my Magic Brit MK2 AC15 style amp for the drive tones. It's worked out pretty well. Subectively better than a lower volume amp combined with pedal drive for what I was after. I've been perfectly happy with drive pedals into a cleaner amp in the live situation. It's all song and scenario based of course.
