Mortske: "I'm finished with "Why?" blocks if this bottle catches fire"
    Y-block: "Challenge accepted"
    Bottle: "Yaaaaaargh!! I'm on fire"
Mortske: "Ok, time to hook it up to a boat tank"
Y-block: "You really upping the stakes there, bro. Stuff this - it would be easier to fire up like he wants"
Mortske: "And that's how you get a Y-block to run"
Y-block: "You reckon? Go on then - put me in a truck and I'll revert to type, seize a couple of valves, lock the rockers up and remove your eyebrows for good!! There's a reason people call me the "Why?" block!!"

Nice find! I think you're right on point, given the color and the repairs, this truck probably was a state highway fleet vehicle, which would make sense with the mount for a big PTO winch, assorted hardware welded in to fix the spare tire mount, and brazed body repairs. As far as the dents go, I'd just leave them be. The paint is original and is in decent shape.

Mr. Mortske. Glad that you found this Old Ferd..and brought her home to make a movie on her. She makes my heart jump with great joy. When i was young and dumber than i am now. I had several of these. 1963 and 1964 vintage. The 292s and the 223 6s. And i like the 292s much better..No comparsion.

There was a reason they parked that truck in a field 38 years ago. It had 164k miles on it and was wore out. It is rare being 4x4 half ton in 62. If someone has a lot of cash and patience that could really be a nice restoration project. I personally don't have either. Really enjoy these "shows". I get to enjoy all your fun without getting my hands dirty or catching on 🔥

There is a passage in the block that goes to the head gasket level then the head has a slot on it to jog the passage over before it goes to the rockers. that's a great place to collect sludge especially with the old oils. Any valve jobs and surfacing of the head makes the slot more shallow. So there were all sorts of external top oil kits available for those back in the day. With a fresh rebuild and modern oil its not a problem.

That OL YELLER pickup is legit!, take the pallet motor and install in OL YELLER and you got a pretty neat beer runner, i like the stack of HAMMS by the door, some of these projects take sum deep thought, so a feller wants to have a little on hand just in case, and dont wash that engine, it will take a shit, i know y blocks ive run alot of 292- 312 engines in my life.

They used to sell a kit with those oil lines to the rockers. My dad had a shop and had a couple of those kits left when he closed. The oil passages to the rockers were notorious for plugging up on those engines. It was the quick fix method.

Junkyard Dogs just salvaged a 1963 Ford with a Y block. They got it running right away, but theirs had not sat in a field as long as yours did.
Being a Ford fan, the Y block looks a lot different from the V8s that replaced it. That exhaust manifold is crazy, and the distributor at the rear of the engine and spark plug ports below the exhaust manifolds is so much like a small block Chevy.

@MortskeRepair - mate, if I could give this another thumbs up, I would. Great to go back to these older ones and see the fun that can be had. Still laugh at the foreshadowing that prompted my original comment too - but that Y-block-on-a-pallet sounded bloody lovely when she eventually idled.
Can't recall where it went or if it made it into the orange beast or not. Always amazes me how engines that have been stored right will kick off and run like they'd only been shut off a few days prior - especially American-built V8s. Just goes to show the resilience of the Internal Combustion Engine and its built-in longevity.
I somehow doubt if in the future it would be so easy if they find a Toyota Prius that's sat for 30 years....but who'd want to get THAT going anyway? I'd only ever watch the video if they found a Tesla stored for so long, because the resultant fire would rival ANY old Y-block, for sure!

That old Y-block sounds pretty good, maybe the original one from the truck would be a good candidate for the wagon after a rebuild

Better keep a fire extinguisher handy when you do Y blocks. Should have plenty of spare parts with the other two. Good job gettin it runnin with no knee caps broken.

Follow up on my Y block experience, my car was a 57 Ford, the timing chain was always slipping, back fixed like a shot gun blast, plus it was burning oil, the 292 replacement used ,the block was cracked after it was installed, the. 312, had little compression in two cylinders, a broken rocker shift and stuck valves, ignition wires would not spark when hot, on and on.

mortske's stuck valve and starter shop - permanently in danger of being lost. truck is pretty rare- might even be a 312 y block - long bed stepside for sure rare. YAY only the exterior grease is smoking - how cool is that?

Hey Mortske... We've got a new name for the 292 Y-Block.... The Planters Peanut Roaster.... Throw that puppy, (No offense to Duffy) in the engine housing, fix the windshield, attach a front winch and maybe a stereo and a spare tire on the drivers' step side and you've got a Duff approved utility rig....Greetings from Cleveland, OH...Home of Ford engines and peanut roasters...

All you need is some good Smuckers' jelly to go with all that peanut butter coming out of that Y-Block.... Give Duffy a good treat........

Tech tip of the day! Push the pin out of the bendix. Put the bendix on a screwdriver spin it up against a wire brush on the bench grinder. Ka powy fixed! Keep your booger hooks away. Ask me how I know. Lol

We studied the myth about hooking up the coil backwards at mechanic school.
On the oscilloscope the spark was slightly weaker. And the instructor told us the spark was actually jumping from the ground strap to the electrode. Instead of the other way
