- There are over 100 identified ethnic groups in Russia. Of them, 41 are legally recognized as “Indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East.” These are the only groups that are legally protected as Indigenous peoples; to meet the requirements, a group of peoples must number fewer than 50,000 people, maintain a traditional way of life, inhabit certain remote areas of the country, and identify as a distinct ethnic group.
The Indigenous peoples of Russia are so varied and diverse that it would be a disservice to try and provide a cultural overview. They do have some characteristics in common: many are nomadic or seminomadic, practice animism, and have lifestyles based on hunting, gathering, fishing, and reindeer herding. In many of these groups, an adherence to traditional lifestyle has become even more important since the collapse of the Soviet economy.

@@Cook-hb2nf Code Talkers. The Navajo do not receive an Alphabet until 1933. Gandhi though He is in Jail at the time. So the Urdu language is opposite of today’s Navajo. You should be able to also understand it. You should get the Navajo Dictionary! You would be a Code Talker Too!!

NOBODY IS RUSSIAN!!, Were proud to be indigenous.
There are only "23" Kerek left in Caxa/Chukotka, Russian census only puts 23 as official count, they don't add mix people. My grandfather was born and raised in Ambarchik, Yakutia and as of 2023 it has 3 residents, who happen to be my cousins. When they die that village is stamped as "Abandoned".

In about 1:19 I understood that the lady was speaking about differences between spoken and written Vepsian (before the narrator said it in English). Of course some Karelian dialects are closer to Finnish (=my native language) than Vepsian.
