Between the desert and the Pacific Ocean - Fishers who risk their lives | DW Documentary

- There are men on this planet who challenge death every day to feed their families. Between the desert and the Pacific Ocean, in the region of Huarmey in Peru, stand vertiginous cliffs. Men like Purunga must overcome them.
Fishers take huge risks to catch particular kinds of fish and seafood: To get to it, they have to climb towering cliffs down to the Pacific. Purunga is one of them. Every day, he makes his way through the desert to the ocean and descends to the sea using ropes and pegs. It’s an immense test of strength that’s already cost many fishers their lives. Purunga’s had a few accidents himself. When the swell is particularly strong, the catch is sometimes meagre. But Purunga knows: the following day he’ll be back to make the descent and try his luck once again.

This 42 minute documentary on harvesting mollusks in Peru has more soul and beauty in it's presentation than most modern Hollywood movies. The story and cinematography were both impeccable. Thank you for doing it.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
disagree I'll watch Hollywood movies anytime!
I agree Gulpy3 !
Unless of course you're composed of poor genetic material to begin with...
Then of course you've little choice other than to watch low level rot.
Couldn't agree more. Unbelievably well done. Mahalo!
I coud'nt agree more . . Thank's for doing a spectacular movie-portrait
These fishermen risk their lives every day to feed their families. It's a challenging way to make a living, and I have tremendous respect and admiration for them.💚💚💚🙏🙏🙏
Documentaries like these make me realize how privileged I'm. No amount of corporate pressure can be compared to the daily risks these guys take.
To be clear, there is no point in comparing your misery to the misery of others.
There is a point in noticing suffering, and feeling compassion for that.
There is a point in practicing gratitude.
Try to feel grateful on behalf of these folks for the things they have to be grateful for.
Imagine them looking at you and feeling compassion for your suffering because they see all the ways in which your body is free but your soul and your mind are restricted.
Maybe. Idk you. Point is the exercise and challenging your thinking patterns.
They probably get more out of life however. Corporate slavery ain't very satisfying, or relaxing.
That's what the guy said himself that he enjoys his job despite the risks, something the corporate executive finds hard to repeat.@@user-wv5fq8di2m
I have the utmost respect for these gentlemen
DW you guys really create the world's craziest documentaries this world has to offer. No one should be doing what these brave guys are doing. Just wow
Idk, man. Looks like pretty enjoyable work to me. Fresh air, wonderful views, exercise, excitement. I'd do it.
This seems like an award winning documentary
If you have not seen DW 'S FROM RIO TO LIMA, look it up! It's a 5 parts documentary on 5 days bus journey! It's still my favorite, it has the same tone as this new one!
Awards are nice. But the reward for filmmakers such as these is not awards. It is telling stories and capturing experiences and moments. Feelings, vistas, sounds, scapes. Textures, patterns, cycles.
What is an award? It is an experience utterly disconnected from the art itself.
I don't like the idea of mixing the two. Awards are like stock options which trade on films as a commodity.
This documentary is what it is no matter what anybody says it is or says about it.
That said, they need more awards and recognition. So we can have more documentaries and they can have everything they need to be happy.

Mad respect for these men who risk life and limb in order to feed their families, I loved hearing about how much this man loved his job and how he takes it serious every day...
There is no complaining of having to get up before dawn to drive to the cliffs, only love for the adventure of it and respect for those who came before him... Thank you for posting this documentary..
These are some heroic men, putting their lives on the line to feed their family. The way he talked about it, you can tell he loves it. Beautiful lives, thankyou for sharing a bit of their lives.
"and we're even happier to be going back home to see our families".. that is the best part of the day.
Incredible, huge privilege to watch documentary. I hope DW gave these men gifts in exchange for sharing their lives. Peace.
I only wanted to check out the video but ended up watching the whole thing. I was entranced by it. The risks these guys take are incredible and I'm really happy that the plentiful sea rewards them sufficiently. Absolute gold from DW. Thank you all but mostly thanks to the Messi of the sea.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! Be sure to check out our channel for more content. 😊
I too was not intrigued with the thumbnail but being a DW documentary, I knew it'd be a gem.
Same hre it's like i was glued to watch the whole story.
I can’t believe before seeing this that someone life maybe so dangerous. Salute the heroes.
Everyone that's included in this video is incredible and praiseworthy. Great job DW.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
They are so brave doing it every day. I wonder how much they earn. This is an extremely tough job. God bless them and protect them. DW is the best docu on UA-cam.
Mad respect! These guys got strong upper body, worked full day and able to pull yourself up 90 degree cliff is tough!
I know even Special Forces soldiers can't duplicate a vertical ascent that long.
Great documentary! 👏🏻 Humans are amazing. Those cliffs are no joke. Long live from the 🇵🇭
Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Would they accept proper climbing gear? I am a climber myself often rapelling hundreds of meters down some overhanging rocks. Wouldn't be a big thing to make their job much safer. A fixed anker, a harness, gear to rapell, some prusik slings at least, a Micro traxion. They would be secured all the time. I would be happy to donate some material. If anyone could help get in contact, please do. What is wonderful and touches me is how much he loves his job! Stay safe and happy
I'm sure DW can hook you up with them but you'd have to invest going to Peru and donate. Maybe start a donnation fund and when you meet the goal to finance it all, go there and give them the gears. And if you're a real good person, don't film anything for your gain just minor photos of the encounter.
If you want to make it your life, live in Peru and open an import company that sell climbing gear for fishermen, you won't get rich but you might live the life you wanted.
Maybe, you can help you with some nice words as well. I can help you contact him. I'm from Huarmey. The woman who appeared at the end of the video is my mom.
Only sane , applicable, intelligent comment I have read so far. Your thoughts are mine precisely. Only problem is that we would be siding and abetting illegal harvest and overtake.
@@cramcrams7741 Good point but probably exaggerated. It would still be hand fishing and gathering not mechanized systematic like chinese trowler fleets that take everything from the oceans of the world which i believe is cause enough for global war against china. China has an overpopulation problem that they try to push out to the world instead of solving. The removal of the one child act policy is a declaration of total conquest of the world by china.
19:30 Messi on back. Another Messi, passionate and expert in his own area.

❤DW is 100% authentic documentary channel
The climber seems very skilled and knowledgeable, and learns from his mistakes. Hope the best for him and his family!
1.I am so impressed by this humble, simple Man. A real Zen thing : so One with Nature, Himself & his Soul.
2. I sure hope he is paid well for his harvests - considering all he has to go through to get them & deliver them.
3. RIP to his friends who didn't make it back.
4. Thank You for this spectacular & Inspiring film.
He may be one with nature but he has to fight it everyday.
Brave Brave Men.
I live on the Southern part of the Pacific on one of two islands mine being the North and from here I have never seen our sea as angry as yours.
Thank you for showing me how tough your lives are just to live your Daylie lives.
Let's hope nothing happens to you guys' weather in the Pacific Ocean or on them endless bluffs.
Kia ora ra from NZ.
These guys have nerves and nuts of Steel 😊no vertigo - kudos to the person who filmed this - walking right behind - Wunderbar ❤
I’m giving all my respect to these guys ❤, even his mom doesn’t know what he’s doing out there…thanks DW for sharing this precious story 🙏🏻
I'm a rock climber and that setup scared the living sh*t out of me.
For real. I want to send these guys some basic harnesses and gear.
I was thinking the same thing.
come on man.... go there and help them with some gear.
And enjoy the climbing yourself there. Looks amazing.
I was just thinking if i could i would have done it.
Overhand knots = Super good enough 👌 😅
Wow just wow!, I'm Peruvian myself and didn't know anything about this profession. Buen trabajo Purunga!
I am learning english language, so I am enhancing my listening skills by this documentary videos, thanks a lot
All the best!
DW documentaries are the very best. So educational!
Thank you for watching! We’re glad you find our content helpful. 😊
I have a ton of respect for you! I'd love to learn a 2nd language someday myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
I want to learn Spanish.
i love this documentary, this is so wonderfull.everywhere in the world there are works that is so defferent and special,we may call it a risk but it is worth more doing it than go steeling,i personaly respect the people who really take their time make this documentary, and most of all the one leting the camera capturing all the bits and pease of the amazing work.
great job.Thankyou so much.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback!
The courage it must take to climb down, is absolutely incredible.😮
Several times I think I have stopped breathing. I am way too timid for this. I don't like heights, unless I'm in an airplane - too scary.
they remind me of people who hunt..... until they realized that they better domesticate animals than hunt them...
In 2018, I watched a taiwanese travel show, the Laos' fishermen fished in the middle of the rapid/ raging Mekong River by standing on thin 🪢 ropes in the middle of the raging river and tried to spired the fishes. It was just scary 🤯!
This Peruana fishermen are just like them! If there's a will, there's a dangerous way to earn a living!
And the strength to get back up. Amazing.💪🏼💪🏼
Truth... Going down is just the beginning. Going back up after a day of grueling work is where the real work is.
One of the best documentary i have watched, kudos to DW. I hope DW shares their youtube revenue with the heroes of this doc.
The Camera work is just AWESOME! This documentary deserves an award.
I am so impressed of those men who risk their life to feed their families and thanks to DW who gave us the footage of how those men did their job and the view of the beautiful ocean.
Amazing country. Amazing people. Amazing stories.
Thank you DW for bringing us these excellent documentaries. Nothing but respect for these brave men who prefer to risk their lives than waste them in meaningless jobs like some of us. Personally, I don't see a waste of a life when you do what you like for a living, even if that doesn't pay you so much. Sometimes I feel like I've wasted my life behind a desk, just not to risk supporting my family and when I see this type of jobs that would make me feel alive Sometimes I get depressed but thenI think it is what it is when it comes for a man to support his family. No wonder why they say a rich man is not who owns a lot but who needs the less.
You too are brave and a hero just like these men. One day you'll look back and realize you too have a story to tell! All workers deserve respect because they contribute to the functioning of life itself. Whatever job it is, you are making a difference. Just that there is no one to tell your story, and that's why I have tremendous respect for journalist who bring people information, yet their own contribution easily goes unnoticed.
When you feel a job burned out, you'll need to take a break to go out to the nature, camping, hiking 🥾. It'll revitalize you
These men are super human. Amazing documentary 👏
Incredibe, Shocking, Numbing, Incredible documentary, i have never seen, this is the real life and Hero of the universe. Is this any way to help money of his family. God Bless You and your friend Diego and Missed soul friend.
What a beautiful fitting comment for these cliffs ocean fishermen. Your words fit perfectly, i feel the same. I am shocked and admiring their life. What they experience is 100 times more fulfilling and amazing than what any millionaire on a yacht and mansion can ever experience. Life has a way to give more raw and all immersion in nature to poor people who try hard than to rich people.
A reflection. We shouldn't be afraid of jobs but rather show respect and appreciation. An incredible documentary
I can not find a words. Just amazing.
I've never heard or seen anything like this.
What an amazing documentary
Thank You DW, you're the best documentary makers.
Greetings from Serbia 🇷🇸
Thank you for watching and for your positive feedback! Kudos from Germany. :)
In 2018, I watched a taiwanese travel show and there were Lao's fishermen risking their life to fish while standing on a thin rope 🪢 and trying to spired the fishes in the raging Mekong River!
This film was actually produced by Parafilms & Look Around You from Cananda in 2021, not DW. That said, I do thank DW Documentary for bringing this amazing film to us.
People who understand nature and respect it's rules
I salute to these brave men who risk their lives just to make it sure they have food in the table for their love ones. To the documentarist, bravo., two thumbs up. From the Philippines.
PURUNGA ERES UN GÉNIO BRODER. Un verdadero atleta. Climbers, walkers and harvesting seafood. That part at around 19:00 when the guy jumps in the water and climbs up a rock, for anyone that has come close to doing that it takes a real next level skill because when the sea sucks in beside the rock you either have to be a real good swimmer or really not be holding on to a rock or even close to it since it will cut you big time and these are live cuts, meaning these cuts get infected pretty fast. Anyway. These guys are next level both in dexterity on their metier as well as being really in tune athletically with the environment they're in. True human beings.
May God bless all of the men who work these hard jobs to feed their families... thank you for this doc... really great job..
there are lots of life lessons in this documentary
Wow, that was epic!
I love the shell fisherman's reason to do what he does: it feels good, he feels alive. There is something for all of us in that choice. It is important to enjoy life and doing so involves taking risks. There is danger but the rewards are great.
Thanks for this awesome story! 🙂
absolutely amazing. What you might not realise is that even though this part of the Peruvian coast is in the tropics, the water is very cold. He's even tougher than you'd first think!
I bet not a single one of these people suffer from depression. Their daily sense of accomplishment must be out of this world.
If these men had proper mountaineering gear their lives would not be so much at risk ... It's amazing to me that anyone could climb that far without even a climbing harness to attach them to the rope just the grip of their hands keeps them from falling to their death ... truly amazing
Really? Wondering how many try to thrive life without watching these bravest people out there. Thanks for the video, superb!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
WOW!!!
One small corner of Earth that won't get overfished by mankind.
This video is showing the overtake. They are going so far to get " the last bean in the bag". Horrific .
And many say they have a hard job !! Watching this I will shut up and not complain if I have an off day. These guys are so out there as to what we know. Respect ...... Respect
Actually your job is worse. They have a hard job for sure but nature gives them huge sights and happiness and adventure. Your job only gives your stress and anxiety and you get views like a animal in a cage all day.
@@ericastier1646 Sad truth :(
Thank you for uploading . DW docomentry is best❤
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
The capital Lima has similar cliffs, it's just insane! Peru is known for the mountain but we learned new things today!
Gordon Ramsay did a travel cooking show in Peru recently, then i learned that the hot 🌶️ were burning hot, the flavor intensified at high altitude!!! No wonder few thin slices in my chicken noodles you got to me!
Respect for the brave fishers who do the deadly daily cliffs, an OMG for the cameraman
I am so impressed by this man! His strength and courage(amongst other traits) Amazes me. 🙌🏾
Nice to see the guy get back up the cliff . Pretty sure I would have spent the rest of my life singing old Otis Redding songs , and doing laundry , never even trying to climb back up that wall . Thank you DW for reminding me that life is what it is ..
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
What a grounded documentary. Humble men working in/with the sea. It is incredible how small those men are in that environment and shows us how those wide open spaces can fill up our souls. All the dangers… but those men have created their unique survival patterns. And at their core they are grateful, humble and too recite the very key "Stepping stones of wisdom" that people teaching presence, personal growth and mindfulness keep repeating. Thank you for bringing us this connection to the power of being at peace in the magnificence of our earth mother.
I'm speechless! No words for them. Lots of thanks to DW from India.
Thanks for watching!
Its not a documentry... Its an art,. Yea this is life at full throttle.... Unbelievable work.. bow down both of you.. Thanks DW... and real life heros of the cliffs...purunga...

From Philippines❤
I thought he was jumping into the churning waves with a rope around his waste for safety, but NO, ... the rope was attached to his gear so he could pull it with him to the other side...WTF!!! RESPECT 🙏
He is amazing climbing the cliff I was so nervous every single moment I watched how he climbed without safety gear.
Greetings from Egypt ❤to the hard working people of the world ❤excellent show ❤❤
Mind boggling. These guys are as hard as the rocks they climb. More great content from DW!

You are awesome DW, please keep these Documentaries coming🙏🏾😊🙏🏾
That anchor at 5:30 had me weak. These men need better equipment.
you must be a climber with fashionable gear and no strength in your arms.
I have a habit of leaving things midway. Can't remember a film or series in a long time which I completed. But this one is a gem. Completed vieweing this documentary. This one has a soul to it.
Nicely shot !! Coming in on the bike and the cliffs
Whenever I see this kind of documentaries, I get a chance to have perspective about life.
This is a great documentary.

Holy..... Crazy how barren landscapes can be so beautiful
Amazing. These dudes are straight up in the elements. Nature. The SEA, ocean. There also in major shape, anything can hinder you on those declines AND inclines!!!

Fantastic documentary. I was able to be fully absorbed without the distractions of A.I. narrations and bad editing. Joyous :)
This is the best documentary I have ever seen, hands down. Really spoke to me.
Wow what brave men harvest the sea from the cliffs, it’s amazing .
This story taught me something , thank you !
27:59 is the part that I love to see & hear :). Hats of to these guys, it requires so much energy & patience.
Totally amazing pictures. Hats off to the fishermen, and the camera people.

Thank you for this documentary and especially my heartfelt gratitude to those men that risk their lives everyday to support their loved ones. May our heavenly father guide and protect each and everyone of you when you are out on the cliffs facing the dangers of mother nature. I am honored to witness your courage to face danger everyday.

Amazing documentary. Unbelievable people, these men are TOP class. Talk about ADRENALINE. Nerves of cold steel. Amazing.
Extraordinary and deeply inspiring. They make most rock climbers look like effete tourists, and I have great respect for climbers. And the bags of shellfish make my mouth water!
This documentary has shown how hard life is! Life isn't easy for everyone I really get lot of admiration hat's off to the perseverance in order to survive and make bread for their families
This is mind-blowing documentary from @DW and Sheer courage of these people is out of this word. Wishing God blessings an safety to their day to day life. Greetings from Sri Lanka :)
