I was here in Ushguli last week. There are actually quite a few tourists who pass through all summer. Lots of small restaurants, cafes, and guesthouses around to serve them. And there's a big cell tower that keeps everyone connected to the world year round. So it's not quite as remote as this doc makes out. Many of the surrounding smaller villages are more remote but not as picturesque for videos like this. In any case, it still feels like a place from the past, still feels quite special.
@@soniarose1983 I went myself via motorcycle. If you can't find anything online there are a lot of guesthouses in Mestia who could probably advise about hiring drivers that could take you around to different villages.
Saying that the wheel hasn't been invented there is just ignorant. Dragging a sled works much, much better on those hillsides, with more control of the load going downhill and is not much more difficult going uphill. Work sleds are safer for the animals hauling them and for the people as well. Wheels are expensive and require more maintenance and a specialized wheelwright to make them.
Wheels also make deep ruts in the paths that require continuous repair. In medieval Japan wheeled carts were forbidden on the main roads for anyone but the imperial court to protect the road surfaces.
They all look 15 years older than they are. Also, alcoholism is clearly a problem here. You can see it in the men's faces. It's why all the men are fat.

Really surprised how close this resembles to remote mountain villages of my region in India. I come from Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in India. Here we have these remote villages near the India-Tibet border located at altitude of well over 2000m. In winters, there is heavy snowfall. So many families move downhill but some do stay in the village. Agriculture is limited with primary crops being potato, carrot, pulses etc. Another thing that I found similar is ritual sacrifice. Here too sheeps or goats are sacrificed to goats whenever families movie from downhill to their villages at the start of spring. The meat is shared by all the village. Collective sharing is kind kf a norm and all the families help each other either to procure food or help wach other in difficult times. I guess mountain villages share resemblance all across the world.
Yes indeed. All highlander cultures converge into similar archetypes. I was thinking how similar is this to my father's village completely elsewhere in the world and read your comment. 👍

I am sure at one point the Svanetis had beautiful traditional clothes. It seems it has gone long ago, maybe at the soviet times. It shows how important it is to hold on to your traditions! Wonderful people!
3:42 "It seems that the invention of the wheel still has not reached this area of the caucasus." insinuating that the SVANS are a backward tribe. Well, the narrative is wrong. They are using sleds around those terrains which are more efficient and easy, compared to wheels that get stsuck at every pothole. Wheels cannot work on that kind of terrain.
I came here to say the same thing! I don't know anything about the Svans, but it is clear that wheels would not work on that terrain (and not in the winter), so why would they use them? Who wrote this? I stopped watching and went to read up on them instead after that comment.
Beautiful country. I noticed that the men were proud and powerful, wanting little if any change. It was the woman who hoped for a better life for her children. I imagine she hoped her four daughters could experience freedom from the strict patriarchal system that valued their brother over them. Fortunately there has been some progress as evidenced by the young woman heading off to study law and economics. Hopefully she will return and contribute her knowledge and strength to her community and work to make it a place where her sisters have equal access to opportunity and value.
I took a great course at university by Kevin Tuite about the different ethnic groups in the Caucasus, their traditions and languages. This documentary is quite good in showing most aspects if not all of the life in those harsh regions. No wonder why there are more than 50 languages in that area of the world, people being surrounded by high terrains that they wouldn't dare crossing for no reasons, hence the richness of local cultures. All this like elsewhere is gradually being lost. A least the Svans seem to hold on for another while.
I would love to own a stove like hers. My grandmother in Germany had an electric stove and a wood stove. She would cook on that wood stove more than on the electric one. The only time she would cook on the electric was to start the boiling of water for the potatoes and making home made noodles.
These people shown in this video are so attractive. Beautiful girls and women and handsome men with smile lines rather than frown lines on their faces. Yes, they could get makeup and pretty clothes. But their modesty and lack of competitive envy between the villagers is awesome. I envy this simple life.❤️❤️❤️
Nice and lovely, thanks and respect and love to you for your hard working to make the tradional life goes on and on. In The Netherlands it has become hard to live in and from our land..Too many people and everything will get into the hands of people with not good intentions. Be very proud of who you are and how you live.
I am totally convinced that in spite of the hard life their lives are a lot more productive and fulfilling than those of us who spend our time in the materialistic world .

What a lovely documentary... old traditions cultures...love drinking alcohol left for the dead. I did however saw a half bottle of Coca-Cola at one of the graves?? Who drank half off the Coca-Cola?? It was time well spent to watch this documentary . God bless the citizens of this remote village
I had the privilege to patrol all the Kodori valley with UN for almost 2 years. Svanetians are a very proud people who try to keep their traditions alive. They love nature, God and they know about families and tradition, words that unfortunately are unknown for people like us who can't live without the mobile, electricity, internet, fast food, luxury cars and hotels, vacations, money. These people are proud and I hope that everyone who saw the video to have the chance to visit this place and see what is real life
I realize that it’s very hard work to live like this but the simplicity sounds so appealing and I’ll bet you won’t find any of them claiming to be depressed. There’s no time for being depressed bc everything that they have depends upon everyone of them to carry their load. I used to go live in a tent with my husband where we didn’t have any of the modern day amenities such as electricity and running water . We used wood to cook our family and to keep us warm in the winter. Those were some of the best days of my life. We got along beautiful as long as we were in the woods. We complimented each other in regards to how we worked together but we just couldn’t make it work when we left the simplicity of the woods. So a part of me is envious of the life they’re living! I actually think it’s easier than dealing with the myriad issues that come with living in the city!

I came here to say the same thing! I don't know anything about the Svans, but it is clear that wheels would not work on that terrain (and not in the winter), so why would they use them? Who wrote this? I stopped watching and went to read up on them instead after that comment.
Ignorant narration, obviously the sled is perfect for the terrain.
I remember watching a movie called Svani around 17 years ago. Wow who would have thought I would stumble upon a real life documentary on them.
I love their culture
In many ways this is a wonderful way of life but also harsh and hard.
What a beautiful life and amazing, resourceful people! Your children are blessed.
Thank you 🙏 For this very interesting documentary !!
Thank YOU❤. So INTERESTING
#enthralling
Svaneti is an amazing place with very modern ski routes nowadays. Highly recommended.
I would love to own a stove like hers. My grandmother in Germany had an electric stove and a wood stove. She would cook on that wood stove more than on the electric one. The only time she would cook on the electric was to start the boiling of water for the potatoes and making home made noodles.
Love to have a stove ?
I really enjoyed this video. GOd bless these good people
These people shown in this video are so attractive. Beautiful girls and women and handsome men with smile lines rather than frown lines on their faces. Yes, they could get makeup and pretty clothes. But their modesty and lack of competitive envy between the villagers is awesome. I envy this simple life.❤️❤️❤️
These people are living the dream life, how I'd love to see this country❤ 💗❤️
These people live in real reality. I envy them
Nice and lovely, thanks and respect and love to you for your hard working to make the tradional life goes on and on.
Stone boats, sleds, are so practical . I use one here on my ranch . Living this way is hard work and I prefer this lifestyle. Still go to farmers market with my Handspun yarns at 70 weekly .
Amazing !! Hard work is the key to a healthy and dignified life 💪💪💪
Could not some help be found from the Facebook appeals for the hospital? I would gladly give.
great episode, really enjoyed it. well done
I like this life. Simple but free from toxic and pollution and crowd
What a lovely documentary... old traditions cultures...love drinking alcohol left for the dead. I did however saw a half bottle of Coca-Cola at one of the graves?? Who drank half off the Coca-Cola?? It was time well spent to watch this documentary . God bless the citizens of this remote village
Love the family towers!
