Hopefully I do so this year and a base M4 MBP to me is much better than what I currently have which is a 3rd Gen Intel i7 Processor.
The fan noise comparison to the intel days isn't "apples to apples"...so to speak, because the performance increase is lightyears better between the two. The reality is that you are only going to hear that fan when you are pushing the SOC to the absolute limit for an extended period of time, which most users are unlikely to do routinely. This is a laptop running extreme video workflows on battery power better than the vast majority of high-end workstation machines with discrete graphics and liquid cooling....seems like our expectations may need some calibrating.
I got a M4 MacBook Pro and I for sure would rather hear the fan than thermal throttle. I'm upgrading from my M1 Air and it does not have any fans. You might laugh but honestly there is this game on Roblox called Greenville and it is very graphic intensive game ( it's a car driving game I play it since I'm in love with cars ) but my M1 Air would thermal throttle and start lagging with like 20 minutes of gameplay. Now with the M4 MacBook my game hasn't lagged and the Mac only gets warm. The fan run around 3k rpms and don't get any higher than that so I downloaded a fan control app so it runs at max speed so then the Mac stays cool and no thermal throttling.
@@teh_hunterersure it is, but it’s also not as performant and the fan profile on the M3 also allows the machine to get hotter which inevitably will have further performance fall off.
Thank you for this!! Did the M4 pro ever got hot on the touchpad? I had to return an M3 max cuz it was getting hot already so now looking at an M4 pro vs m4 max for video editing. PLEASE if you can include some 14 inch M4pro vs M4 max compares that would be amazing! Would be curious to see a little CapCut in the mix as I use that a lot too like many creators these days doing short/long form 🙏🏼🙏🏼
The M1 Pro has held up incredibly well for many of these benchmarks related to productivity, and exporting times of video. Still very impressed with it's performance. Maybe when the redesign comes with m6 we will have a look see.
This is by far the best comparison I have found on youtube. You come clearly to the point, no useless blah blah blah . Thanks a lot, it made my decision to the M4 pro.
If I was going to buy one right now I would take the M4 base model without a doubt. But if I needed it for heavier work I would only consider the 16 inch model with M4 Pro which still does have that 24 hours battery life and would probably have a little bit better thermals than the 14 inch model.
Upgrading from a M1 Macbook Pro to the base M4 Macbook Pro. The most I do when it comes to intensive work is graphic design so I'm not worried about the fans reving up. Excited to get it in hand!
I just did a 4-minute test with multiple apps open on a base M4 16gb RAM Mac mini. 💻 Apps Open: Lightroom (working on layers), Photoshop (creating an AI image), CapCut, Finder (scrubbing through RAW photos), Safari (6 tabs), iMessage, Notes, Activity Monitor. 🤯 🚀 Performance Results: Within 1 minute, the memory usage shot up to 14GB, and the memory pressure indicator turned yellow (which is still manageable). Tasks Completed: Generated the AI background in Photoshop, masked layers in Lightroom, experienced only a slight lag (half a second) when scrubbing photos in Finder. WITHIN 1 MINUTE. 📝 Conclusion: The base M4 Mac mini is incredibly capable. If you focus on one task at a time (e.g., have only Lightroom open while editing photos and then move to video production afterward), the base model with 16GB is more than enough! However, if you’re someone who likes having everything open simultaneously, you might want to consider upgrading to the 24GB version of the base M4. 💻 My Choice: Personally, I’m opting for the M4 Pro (12-core) base configuration because I work at a fast pace after a few years of the same workflow. But for anyone working at a more normal pace, focusing on one thing at a time, the BASE M4 (16GB) at $599 (or $499 with student/military discount) is an excellent choice. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps! 🙌 God Bless you all. Jesus loves you!!!
I am looking forward to the M4 iMac video. I am upgrading my 2019 intel 27" iMac to the M4 iMac so I'm interested to see it in action. Getting the 10/10 core, 24GB RAM and 512GB (Wish was higher) SSD.
You should consider adding system power draw and core temperature during benchmarks for additional insight between the chips. Thanks! That may provide additional metrics to make sense of the fan speed differences.
I have the M2 Pro with 16GB and I absolutely love it. My work lately has been maxing out the memory so M4 Pro with 48GB seems like a good move. Since getting the M2 Pro my event videography work has graduated to a different level.
Actually I don't know why is it so important to bring a new MacBook Pro every year. Most probably there are hardly any people who really can utilize all the capabilities of such a machine. The previous version of the MacBook Pro could serve anyone for years without any problems.
It's all about use case. My M1 MacBook Pro is all I'll ever need since I retired. If a person's use case changes dramatically then getting a new.newer model may make perfect sense, no?
I think the thing comments like this miss, is that there is always someone who hasn’t even gotten m1 yet. If someone was still using intel, which many people still do, then this update cycle still makes perfect sense.
Can you try running a local LLM on the M4 vs M4Pro? I suggest LM Studio with the following models: - Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct-4bit (MLX version) - c4ai-command-r-v01-4bit I really want to see how well the 10-core gpu holds up to the 20-core.
Great review Luke, I plan on buying a Apple Silicon ARM based Mac laptop soon to replace my 2013 MBP, even though I used Open Core Legacy Patcher to install Sequoia 15.1, it could use more then the 8GB of ram it has.
Honestly, I don't think that the fan noise is a big deal, as I am already accustomed to the noise of my Intel MacBook Pro. I'm really thinking of upgrading to these M4 Pro Machines. The 1999$ machine is really tempting as Luke said.

Some context on the Geekbench ML benchmark: The Geekbench AI CPU test uses the AMX units on the Apple Silicon CPU. This is an accelerator used to speed up matrix operations, which is useful for the multiply-accumulate operations used heavily in AI inference. While the Geekbench AI NPU and GPU benchmarks are self-explanatory, I believe out of the CPU, NPU and GPU benchmarks, the GPU benchmarks carries the most weight. Although NPUs are very power efficient, they are still not as powerful as the GPU for actual heavy workloads like LLM inference, so LLMs usually still run on the GPU for maximum throughput, making their score the most relevant.
in other words, if I upgrade from my 24c M1 Max to the full M4 Pro, I should notice big difference in CoreML backed workflows, like Stable Diffusion in DrawThings, right? Since it uses CPU+GPU+NPU
I am upgrading from a 15” mid-2014 MacBook Pro to a 16” M4 Pro. Only reason I am upgrading because Apple doesn’t support my laptop anymore. I can’t update the OSX or even normal applications like MS Office or Safari. I am looking forward to feel the difference

luke, can you test power efficiency? your channel is pretty cool as is, but another thing to make it cooler and stand out from the hundreds of youtube cinebench test channels is using a kill-a-watt and measure how much efficient/power hungry the chips are in normal workloads and under stress

Got the unbinned M4 Pro for free from the M3 Pro (had a display issue and Apple gave a free replacement to the latest model), so far looks like its performing much better, even matching my gaming PC's 3060 Ti in GPU performance
Got my M4 Mac mini yesterday. Only upgraded the storage to 512gb. I was able to stick it in my laptop bag, with my laptop. Super impressed with its size. I think it'll be a great replacement for my Mac Studio, probably going to end up trading in the studio for a MBP.
Really appreciate your review! While others are reviewing the m4 max which is practically not for most of us, you give most of us valuable input. Keep it up!
I think I can explain the performance compared to the M2 ultra: Although the M2 Ultra has TONS of cores, in order to utilize any of that the software it's running has to be built to handle that many cores. So if the software can only utilize for example 16 cores, then any number over that no matter how large will offer no boost. In fact, since in a lot of cases it's easier to have a HIGHER core speed on smaller dies, sometimes the cpu with LESS cores can win in certain apps. Where the M2 ultra would shine in that case is being able to handle other tasks while simultaneously rendering at full speed and still being able to handle other tasks without any slowdown provided there is enough RAM to also handle both.
You definitely should use for benchmarking Topaz as this tool brings my m3 max mbp to its knees in the sense that when you encode two clips simultaneously my Mac uses more power than my power supply can supply it with. This tool utilizes the cpu, gpu and npu to the max
Absolutely love your videos! They always bring such great insights. Would you consider making one on how to use the new mini with the older MacBook Pro? I think it would be super helpful!

Mac mini is the most impressive since you get the 10 core M4 for a low price. The iMac just gets the 8 core unless you pay extra. I’m interested to see the Studio get the M4 upgrade. Right now it makes no sense with the old M2.
Watching this on my 15' MBP mid-2014 i7 16gb 512gb.. Guess I'll be buying a 16' M4 Pro 24gb 1tb! Thanks for this video 🙌🏻

In Geekbench all M chips are now 80-110% faster in multi-core. M4 vs M1 in all editions. This is worth to keep in mind. When M3 came out, the Max edition had the best boost, now with M4 the Pro edition had the best boost. Ultra vs Standard... M1: 2,2x performance M2: 2,2x M3: - M4: 2,5x (forecast, if Ultra is Dual Max) Good numbers to know
I agonized what to get with Best Buy having many models on sale, open box, etc... I settled on the base m4 macbook pro 14". I felt it was completely adequate for my heavy office work and mid level graphics design / tasks I do running a small business. I think what a lot of people miss is just how adequate the original m1 still is and how much better the m4 is than that... it is doing great and am happy with my purchase.
main reason for huge difference in m3 and m4 is due to 16gb ram offered on the base model, 8gb ram on previous base model was really limiting the true performance of M3
With visually intensive tasks, anything possibly beyond 4K resolution in most areas of work and play, the greater the trade offs would be for each chip type (base, pro and max). It is not a bad thing as it has improved the overall means in how they are regulated in terms time, content and intent compared to how they were before (for example, from Intel to Apple Silicon or gradually from 2018 to now). A milestone for this improvement is from the new Mac Mini M4 / M4 Pro, compared to its previous models, either from a design or component based standpoint. The only question I have is if an M4 Max counterpart to the MacBook Pro now were to be in development and considerable release, would there be absolute silence or the most minute whisper of air that could be heard if left on standby mode, for example, if you consider not only the design but the possibility of performance cores taking some time to focus on visual intensive tasks and their real time activity, similar to iPhones and iPads with screen time, and regulating performance, fan noise, etc. around that? Also surely it is a means to follow up on, at least as an adjustment or notification that I know most Apple products since Intel chipset 2018 MacBook Airs have or are capable of showing in some way.
I think the sweet spot is the unbinned M3 Pro on discount or from the refurbished store - that’s what I bought last week when the M4 pricing was announced
In technology point of a view, and for more critical services, go with one update behind a latest one, for example, go with M3 pro while M4 they are fixing bugs and hitch, once they are stable go with M4 once M5 comes out.
As a musician, I think I'm gonna wait on the M4 Macbook Air so I can go fanless. Fan sounds aren't annoying to me or anything but would cause a problem when recording instruments/vocals through mics.
Thanks for the video. Have watched many and yours is the first one that provided a fan noise test, albeit not instrumented. Did you notice any thermal throttling on the M4? Another difference to note between M4 and M4 Pro is the SSD speed, which is almost double for the Pro.

Why adjust our expectations when the M3 Pro is extremely quiet? He's comparing it to last year's model.
But there is no M4 Max on the market....
The M1 Pro has held up incredibly well for many of these benchmarks related to productivity, and exporting times of video. Still very impressed with it's performance. Maybe when the redesign comes with m6 we will have a look see.
I like that you share the AI benchmark, which much content creators missed out. Thanks for the sharing
This is by far the best comparison I have found on youtube. You come clearly to the point, no useless blah blah blah . Thanks a lot, it made my decision to the M4 pro.
The M3 and M4 have raytracing circuitry, whereas the M2 doesn't. That's why M3/M4 shine on the Blender's GPU test which uses that circuitry.
That is part of it but also the mesh shading acceleration and dynamic caching
Add the end screens 😉
If I was going to buy one right now I would take the M4 base model without a doubt. But if I needed it for heavier work I would only consider the 16 inch model with M4 Pro which still does have that 24 hours battery life and would probably have a little bit better thermals than the 14 inch model.
I’m upgrading from a 16” i7 intel 16/512 MBP to the 14” M4 chip 16/512 MBP. This is gonna be fun.
🚀 Performance Results: Within 1 minute, the memory usage shot up to 14GB, and the memory pressure indicator turned yellow (which is still manageable).
Getting the 10/10 core, 24GB RAM and 512GB (Wish was higher) SSD.
i would love to see a battery test between the m4 pro and the m1 pro. And maybe a temp test / comparison. Thanks for the great vids =)
You should consider adding system power draw and core temperature during benchmarks for additional insight between the chips. Thanks!
That may provide additional metrics to make sense of the fan speed differences.
Do you recommend 12-core over the 14 core pro? That will reduce fan noise? A little more power for a little battery
Great video. Loved seeing how the different versions of MacBooks render and export videos.
thanks man.. this has been helpful
Can you try running a local LLM on the M4 vs M4Pro? I suggest LM Studio with the following models:
- Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct-4bit (MLX version)
- c4ai-command-r-v01-4bit
I really want to see how well the 10-core gpu holds up to the 20-core.
Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct-4bit (MLX version) running with LM Studio on my base model M4 Mac mini is doing 49.22 tok/sec
Great review Luke, I plan on buying a Apple Silicon ARM based Mac laptop soon to replace my 2013 MBP, even though I used Open Core Legacy Patcher to install Sequoia 15.1, it could use more then the 8GB of ram it has.
What does the battery life look between the two?
Honestly, I don't think that the fan noise is a big deal, as I am already accustomed to the noise of my Intel MacBook Pro. I'm really thinking of upgrading to these M4 Pro Machines. The 1999$ machine is really tempting as Luke said.
About to finish my masters in applied statistics and considering the Mac mini M4 pro with 14cpu cores 20gpu cores , with 48GB RAM, 2TB SSD for a new personal home computer for data science work. Have always been a windows guy but this new mini looks so nice.
Some context on the Geekbench ML benchmark:
The Geekbench AI CPU test uses the AMX units on the Apple Silicon CPU.
Also. How do you distinguish three laptops that look the same without checking the "about the device"?
I am upgrading from a 15” mid-2014 MacBook Pro to a 16” M4 Pro. Only reason I am upgrading because Apple doesn’t support my laptop anymore. I can’t update the OSX or even normal applications like MS Office or Safari. I am looking forward to feel the difference
Open Core Legacy Patcher is all you need, your Mac can run Sonoma perfectly fine, even Sequioa would work
Thank you, I didn’t think there was an option to update. I will try that
Luke - this is the best comparison video nice seen, thank you! As a small business owner who does everything (literally) from my 8yr old 2016 i5 MB, has been struggling with basic tasks in fcpx for a while but the M4Pro looks like it base model will do everything I need for the next 8yrs so maybe it’s time to take the plunge! 🤘NGL, gonna miss the Touch Bar though - I use it for everything 😢
I would actually prefer a noisy fan over silence. It really helps with lowering the temps and sustaining the load
I love the fan noise part and benchmarks. That would help the fan section would be to record the room tone, noise cancel that out of your audio so we just get the fan sound. Micing it as well helps. Great reviews. So much helpful detail. Even the AI stuff.
I would like to have the noise and thermals comparison of the M4 Pro 12 vs 14 core
the difference is probably virtually meaningless, otherwise I think he’d have mentioned it
i was waiting for a vid from luke. im more interested in Ai dev, so i cant wait for the test for those
I don't see the point of upgrading my 13' MBP 2018, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports.
Judge for yourself:
Enormous, breathtaking CPU: quad-core Intel Core i5 2,3 GHz!
Unbelievable graphics with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 with HUGE 1536 MB!
Super FAST 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 which ENOUGH for EVERYTHING
I still use my M1 pro laptop and its killer! Ill probably wait until the M6 MacBooks come out especially if theres a huge re-design with OLED displays
My thoughts exactly.
Same
Same here❤
Nice benchmarks! just ordered an m4 pro, but next time you should add ram size too. new games tend escalate better with more ram since they don't need to offload as much
luke, can you test power efficiency?
your channel is pretty cool as is, but another thing to make it cooler and stand out from the hundreds of youtube cinebench test channels is using a kill-a-watt and measure how much efficient/power hungry the chips are in normal workloads and under stress
Thanks for showing the graph compared to all the other M-series chips. Most reviewers don't do that.
Thank you for mentioning fan noise under different loads and circumstances.
Much more important thing for me than battery life and even video export times.
Love my MacBook Pros silent.
Hello.
I recently moved to France from Japan, and I’m currently not working. It’s been 8 years since I last bought a MacBook, but I’m thinking of getting one soon. What do you think would be the best fit for me?
Here are my needs:
• Photo and video editing (both at an intermediate level)
• Administrative tasks and daily use
• Playing Death Stranding smoothly
Thanks in advance for your advice!
I got the M4 Pro Mac Mini and I really love it. For mobility I just use my Ipad Pro.
For the people disappointed by the FPS numbers. Remember it was 4K at highest settings. 1080p or 1440p gaming would be perfect
Do you feel the M4 would be able to handle Civilization VII?
Got the unbinned M4 Pro for free from the M3 Pro (had a display issue and Apple gave a free replacement to the latest model), so far looks like its performing much better, even matching my gaming PC's 3060 Ti in GPU performance
Is the base M4 good enough?
With 16 ram 512 SSD.
Sure100%%
Got my M4 Mac mini yesterday. Only upgraded the storage to 512gb. I was able to stick it in my laptop bag, with my laptop. Super impressed with its size. I think it'll be a great replacement for my Mac Studio, probably going to end up trading in the studio for a MBP.
The most details review I have ever seen recently! thanks Luke!
Still happy with my binned 14 inch m1pro
Hi Luke, I’m planning to buy macbook pro but could not decided it yet. I just wanna ask, do you prefer m3 pro or m4 base model? Thanks
Man, thanks a lot for testing the binned version of m4 pro!
It’s nice you got binned vs unbinned m4 pro comparison. It’s clear now to me they are not far off.
You said binned m4 pro but then your highlight m4 pro non binned. 12:29
I have M1 (2020) MacBook Pro.
I LOVE the new M4 Pro chips, unbinned.
I THINK, I’ll wait another 2-4 years actually and get an M6 or M8 Pro. Maybe by then we’ll get TANDUM OLED ?? Especially on M8’s?
It’s not surprising that M2 Ultra is about the same speed as M4 Pro since they score similarly in Blender’s benchmark 2500 to 2700 I believe
When you're done with all the M4 hype.. please do a video about the delusional resale market ( eBay ) trying to sell older model at current model prices..
Mac mini is the most impressive since you get the 10 core M4 for a low price. The iMac just gets the 8 core unless you pay extra. I’m interested to see the Studio get the M4 upgrade. Right now it makes no sense with the old M2.
Great runthrough! I'd love to see some comfyui workflow tests (ai image and video rendering).
awesome video as always, Luke! Thank you! I would love to see a video on logic pro performance on the M4 and M4 pro
My base model M2 MBP is doing everything I need it to do!
When testing fan noise, were you running them in High Power mode or Auto? It’d be interesting to see a comparison between Auto and High Power.
high power is only on 16" MBP right?
Throw low power into the mix on fan noise comparisons
@ No, on this year’s model, it’s on both the 14” and 16” versions.
M3 Pro 14" user here - 6 months in, never heard the fans. I guess they're in there somewhere.
M3 pro vs M4 base what would you go for if you had to make this choice today at same price?
@@vasugarg863 I use mine for graphic design so I'd be fine with an M4 base. Probably the 1TB version with a nano-texture display
Watching this on my 15' MBP mid-2014 i7 16gb 512gb.. I just love it, I do video editing (FCPX) and photo editing (Photoshop) and it works great, but it's time to upgrade as I want to try some new programs that won't run on Big Sur like Pixelmator Pro (so I can finally say goodbye to Adobe) and Arc Search (to see if it's as good as the mobile version).. Guess I'll be buying a 16' M4 Pro 24gb 1tb! Thanks for this video 🙌🏻
nice comparison charts! I just miss the M1 Max and M2 Max for getting an even better idea. Considering getting the M4 Pro as M1 Max (24c) owner, what do you think? I use Resolve, Blender, Photoshop and DrawThings (stable diffusion / CoreML)
Thank you for all your reviews lately 🏆
In Geekbench all M chips are now 80-110% faster in multi-core. M4 vs M1 in all editions. This is worth to keep in mind.
When M3 came out, the Max edition had the best boost, now with M4 the Pro edition had the best boost.
Ultra vs Standard...
M1: 2,2x performance
M2: 2,2x
M3: -
M4: 2,5x (forecast, if Ultra is Dual Max)
Good numbers to know
wonderful tests and comparisons, Luke you’re the best
I agonized what to get with Best Buy having many models on sale, open box, etc... I settled on the base m4 macbook pro 14". I felt it was completely adequate for my heavy office work and mid level graphics design / tasks I do running a small business. I think what a lot of people miss is just how adequate the original m1 still is and how much better the m4 is than that... it is doing great and am happy with my purchase.
Please do a real world battery life comparison between these two.
main reason for huge difference in m3 and m4 is due to 16gb ram offered on the base model, 8gb ram on previous base model was really limiting the true performance of M3
Hello, Luke! Thank you for this review! Can you include Logic Pro test?
I think the sweet spot is the unbinned M3 Pro on discount or from the refurbished store - that’s what I bought last week when the M4 pricing was announced
I’m on a MacBook Pro 2017 13” Touch Bar 256GB with 8GB unified so I’m definitely ready for an upgrade 😂 I’m torn on whether to go for M4 or M4 Pro 🤔
If your current computer is enough for your workflows then base m4 will definetly be ok
Going from 2019 i9 16” 32GB/1TB to a 14” 14C/20C GPU/48GB/1TB/NT. Can’t wait.
Great video, be nice to see how these new M4s cope with heavier effects in davinci resolve? Magic mask, depth map etc?
I feel like I understand the lackluster iPhone release now. They were laser focused and on something worthwhile.
What was the fan sound like when you were gaming?
Whisper transcription of things like youtube videos or a podcast using Aiko or MacWhisper would be great to see!
Hey Luke, can you please compare the M1 Pro, M1 Max, M4 and M4 Pro in the next video plz. I really wanna know how powerful the M4 Pro from this year is against the legendary M1 Max!
Can't wait to see the M4 Max test. Apple removed Pro-96GB option so when you want larger than 64GB memory you have to choose M4 Max with full cores
3:27 I love their products 😎
Solid video and good breakdowns
