So I buy what I need up front. The real problem is no repairability. And Apple's notorious declaration of "liquid damage" on anything they don't want to cover under warranty. I am not in a financial position to buy a multi thousand dollar crap shoot with no third party recourse if the OEM company decides to live down to their bad reputation and screw me.

The truth is that an M3 is much slower than an i9 than you claim in normal applications. The problem is that like all UA-camrs you choose video editing as your example of a high end app. Macs have native video apps which is why they are not much slower than i9s running equivalent apps.
Unfortunately for me as an embedded software developer none of the apps that I use are available for Macs. This means that if I was to use a Mac for my work I would need to run Windows versions of apps under Rosetta 2. This means that an M3 Mac would be less than half as fast as an i7 or i9 PC when running my workload.
Intel intended to use TSMC's 3 nm process this year but delayed this plan until next year when TSMC will have a better 3 nm process available with a higher yield. This means that next year Intel (and AMD) will not waste as much electrical power in their computers as they currently do.

This isn’t true just for you, friend. I’m a civil engineer and a Mac is pretty useless to me as none of my working softwares are available for it. It would be useful to me just for watching videos, even playing games is not possible.
These kind of reviews aren’t the reality. But, if the developers of professional softwares of various areas make their software to Macs the story could be different, but we can’t live on a dream land, the reality is that.

I'm a developer and I'm currently in store for a new laptop and will be needing 32GB of ram and at least 1TB of storage. A MacBook Pro with these specs is in 3k territory. I can get a 7840u laptop with these specs for 1-1.5k where I live. And yes M2 is better than 7840u, no questions there, bot not worth 2-3x the money imho.

@@definingslawek4731 Sure. But for many budgets, a large monitor (even high a fps one) and desktop will still be cheaper/obtainable than a good laptop. Your said display is stationary in a set position taking up a space. It's not being carried around with the laptop. And then when the monitor is in use, the laptop screen is in the way, unless the monitor is high. The magic of Apple Silicon is it gives you equivalent performance to a decent Intel desktop CPU while consuming 1/10th the wattage. That's what's game-changing about them. If all you care is peformance regardless of power consumption, heat output, fan noise and battery life, then sure, Intel's perfectly fine.

However, for a desktop set up power consumption is not really a concern that is top of mind for most people at that point they care about raw performance with the only consideration being the heat and that's only because they want to be able to maintain peak performance and not worry about being thermal throttled.

4k dollars for a thermally throttling laptop with notorious repair issues and shady (aka often illegal when brought to court) business and support practices
    or
3k dollars for an entire top-spec desktop that never thermal throttles, can work for days, and if anything breaks I can fix it with a hammer or have it serviced by a local repair shop
There is no such thing as a bad product, only bad pricing. And Apple are still behind because of this, when it comes to broad market appeal. And I make no mistake in recognizing this is fully intentional on their part. They have already saturated as much as their production pipeline can support, they don't benefit on compromising on margins to reach more customers.
Then there's all the other things the mac ecosystem can't handle, proprietary software systems, general driver support for various fields of work, etc. It's simply a far more limited platform that granted works very well if you buy into their whole ecosystem, but then you're also paying 30-40% more on every single item you use, which quickly ramps up over time. Plus when my desktop PC starts to fall behind the curve, I can swap out a select number of components and be back at the top of the charts. Not possible with Mac products, even their desktop systems are end-of-road purchases that have to be fully renewed every 4 years or so to keep up with what's out there.
Don't get me wrong, what Apple is doing is amazing. They have some world class engineers and implementations that Intel and AMD can't beat one-to-one. But that is only relevant, if the products are available in the first place. And at Apple prices, that just isn't the case for many people unless you very specifically work with the fields where their products excel and you never need to branch out.

Thanks for the work you are doing on comparing systems cross platoform. Very educational and entertaining. One thing I have yet to see anywhere on youtube is comparison of MP4 encode quality on PC vs MAC on low bitrates. Low bitrates as used in streaming 4-10Mbps. I did some tests I would take output of even dated Quadro P200 any day over what is on the output of M series hardware encoders. Speed is only part of the deal, the quality is another one.

The x86_64 CPUs uses the CISC architecture And arm CPUs uses RISC architecture. If you learn more about this you'll know why x86 tends to pull more power, however if you want to make x86_64 app run on arm CPU then you see a worse result since arm doesn't have the instruction sets needed and the app will use a lot of CPU cycles in order to make it run.
You can't directly compare these two architectures since they are different from each other, unless if intel moved to arm.

    • @AlexanderBorshak

If I'm correct, the modern Intel CPUs using the RISC on the low-level as well, but have to simulate CISC on microcode level - for backward compatibility. So the backward compatibility is the real price for less FLOPS/WATT ratio. But, as for consumer, if i don't bother about it and not going to run some outdated software, i can buy Mac and have that better performance per watt (and that not being said about Apple ecosystem between Mac / iPhone./ iCloud - neither Windows or Android can afford such great UX).

10:53 letting the Macbook cool down every time before exporting is not very realistic for a full time media creator, though. Once you are done editing, you want to smash the export button like a cockroach because the client has you on speed dial.
Postponing the export by even 2 minutes would cancel all of its performance gained by avoiding throttling.

The thermal limitations of the Macbook setup are gonna come through. In the tests where it's been cold overnight and is set to run a 30min test as the first thing, it'll do fine. But over hours of work, it's gonna throttle and degrade its performance (as shown in the initial tests). It's not gonna be bad, but it's not gonna deliver the peak potential that you sure as hell are paying for.
I would look into getting the system with the best cooling setup for the M3 Max relative to your budget for one-time purchase -and go with that. Regardless of what these tests are saying, and how much power your system is using, you're not making full use of the i9 and 4090 if all you do is Premiere. They're still optimized for certain types of work more than others. At least that's my 2 cents.

What is your current PC's energy consumption cost? Just because you work 12 hours a day doesn't mean your PC is constantly drawing maximum power during that entire period.
