Can this battle reenactment change my mind about the English Civil War?

  • It's January, so why not kick the year off with a jolly Holly Holy Day in Nantwich, with some Morris dancing, battle reenactment and a whole load of musket fire and canon fire? I couldn't think of an answer to that question so I went to pay a visit, hoping a reenactment of an important part of the English Civil War - the Battle of Nantwich - would bring to life a period of history I've never really bothered learning about. But also, to see what the battle means to Nantwich today, the town and its people.
This year I'm hoping to visit some of Britain's more unusual annual festivals, to capture some of the sense of fun, pride and craziness that comes with our strangest and most loved traditions.
If you'd like to visit Nantwich for Holly Holy Day next January, please visit:

Ollie, another enjoyable watch. The Nantwich Civil War reenactment reminded me of the Battle of Gettysburg reenactment of the American Civil War. The reenactors from Nantwich and Gettysburg have such passion in what they do, while keeping history alive. Also, it's nice to see all those people/families outside enjoying life.

How did I not know about this? It's within visiting distance for me so hopefully next year I'll be there. Great video Ollie and a great advertisement for the town. Thanks.

Reenactment, LARPing, just enjoying yourself. You should visit Visby Medieval Week! I make it almost two weeks as I have to visit all my friends on the island. It's the best week(s) of the year! Singing, drinking, having the best people around you, and wearing my most expensive clothes (and most comfortable), and then only half remembering what you did. Wonderful! And you should try it.

Good piece of work. Nantwich is an example of how a small commemorative event can flourish with the enthusiasm of participants and local supporters.
Percy Curry back in 1963 attempted to re-establish the memory of the forgotten heroes of the siege and battle of Nantwich by laying a wreath at the war memorial, but it was not until 1971 that support developed, following his talk to the newly formed Nantwich Historical Society. Andy Gillitt approached the Chairman of Nantwich Historical Society (Herbert Rowsell) and offered to involve some Sealed Knot members in their period dress. The offer was accepted and at short notice he brought three Royalists, three Parliamentarians and three ladies to attend the ceremony.
The first re-enactment took place in 1973 at Barony Fields.
Since then it has grown to be a must-do for many of us in the Knot, with people coming from all over the country to participate. This is an excellent introduction to the day - and not just because for once I saw myself!
Well done. Perhaps come back next year and see some of the other acticities based around the museum and show the memorial event in the Square and the presentation of the Rose Bowl to the best unit on the day - a unique Nantwich element.

As an American, it’s kindove different to hear another Civil War be called the Civil War.

Just an add - the drums were the 17th century way of relaying orders. No ear pieces, radios or whatever then.🥁

I read the first shot to be fired in English civil war was on Salford Bridge (now Victoria Bridge) over the river Irwell between the Royalists (Salford) and the Parliamentarians (Manchester)

I think if I'd been in the civil war I wouldn't have found it fun. Civil wars are always very bloody. And isn't Nantwich just the posh end of Crewe?

1971 was the first commemorative wreath laying by a handful of society members. 1973 was the first full-blown battle event or muster as we call them

Perhaps this is how to bring the history of steam to life. Convince some one that those early engines need to be demonstrated where steam railways began if only for one day a year to start with.
