Rediscovering Viking Britain at Europe's largest Viking Festival

- It's February, and another excuse for the British to dress up, get drunk, and attack each other with ancient weaponry. This month I'm heading to one of the biggest historical festivals in Britain: Jorvik Viking Festival in the great city of York. The largest of its kind in Europe, I've not just turned up to see a lot of people in costume, carrying swords and shields. This one promises to be a more immersive experience, with demonstrations into Viking culture, music, language and crafts, that questions the way we see Vikings today - violent and bloody, but somehow kind of cool.
This year I'm hoping to visit some of Britain's more unusual annual festivals, to capture some of the sense of fun, pride and craziness that comes with our strangest and most loved traditions.

I went to the Jorvik festival a few (coughs many) years ago!
It was Brilliant! I will never forget the culmination after the defeat of the Viking Lord was his "burial on a Boat set on fire with burning arrows. Followed by some very un-Viking like fireworks!
The culmination of a week long festival!
As a Dane, it could be rather interesting to experience such a festival in England.
Great video. Thanks.
What a great way to spend a week, in York with a bunch of "Happy Vikings." Ollie, the history of the UK is quite complex and dynamic. Thanks for keeping your local and reginal history alive...... Time to clean the BBQ for lunch.
Thanks mate. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
We did........ Thanks again@@BeeHereNowuk
Loved York the two times I have visited.
Looked like a great week for sure
Looks like Glastonbury with battleaxes!!! 🤣
York was a great week's stay nearly 40 years ago. Doesn't look like it's got any worse over the years. 😉😊
Excellent video as always. I have never been to York, it has been on my list for a while, I will have to tick it off soon. Keep up the great work.
You looked a bit damp, too - - had to smile at the brief clip of the 'Viking' sucking on an E-cig!
Great, I'll be there on Wednesday. To be fair, I was there last year and it was great.
Great vid Ollie and cool haircut mate!
Haha thanks! 😀
The black wolves need to visit york
Thanks Ollie. Looked like a great day out. History is written by those who write it, which is not the same things as the people who made it...right? Isn't Knutsford in Cheshire named after the Viking king Cnut, or is this one of those urban myths that has taken on a life of it's own? Anyway, thanks again.
I thought that it immortalized a particularly aggressive Pike with strange dietary preferences as to the men and beasts who tried to use the ford!? 🤭🙄😱
When are you organising the steam rail festival, in the birth place of steam. It just needs the visionary to make it happen.
Now you got a proper name: Ollie the Videographer.
But that feather helmet....sheesh, that was weird (the whole outfit, in fact)
G'Day to you, we were there in 2014,went to the Jorvik Museum, very well done as Museums go, I thought having the Smells of the place Brilliant!...PS WTF is a Palestine Booth got to do with Vikings!!!!
