- The picturesque gorge of the River Severn in Shropshire boasts two significant landmarks of the early industrial revolution. In the village of Coalbrookdale in 1709, Abraham Darby I successfully smelted iron using coal instead of charcoal - an act that made iron production cheaper, faster and less dependent on geography. This new iron was also stronger and revolutionised small changes already taking place throughout Britain: the process of industrialisation. In 1779, Darby's grandson was at the helm of the company when its boldest project yet was undertaken... the building of the world's first free-standing iron structure - the iron bridge.

Super post, used to live nearby for many years, the high arch of the bridge was to allow the Severn Trows, - boats to clear the masts as they went under with their goods to the south, also the design of the cast frames was made as a kit of parts, based on wooden mockups, so once cast, you just slot and bolt the light but strong arches together to make the whole, less is more in this case.

Demolishing the power station cooling towers at Ironbridge a couple of years back was a big mistake. That place documented the carbon age from beginning to end. Imagine if all the other relics had been blown up by property developers.

Olly, that was a brilliant video. I studied about the Industrial Revolution while in High School. I visited Ironbridge several times including school trips. And now I just saw this and can honestly say that I learned more watching your 11 minutes 55 seconds video and listening to your narrative than I ever did in the past. Absolutely the right connection to draw: revolutionary innovation and our current predicament. My personal Industrial Revolution heroes are George and Robert Stevenson. Their story is one of hard work, talent, modesty and vision. And yet, all that they developed and built has brought us here. Oh well, so it goes.
Yes absolutely. There's no blame of course. Their ingenuity should be celebrated. It's just unfortunate that all things have consequences, which is the next problem for people to tackle. It's all just part of our navigation through history.
