Why (wood) stove heat reclaimers are a bad idea and what you could do instead

- Heat reclaimers are not always a good idea because they will make creosote build up more into your chimney and also can reduce the drag. If you have a very inefficient wood stove they will work but i just think there are better ways to improve your wood stove. When you don't have already a second burn chamber then this make more sense then a heat reclaimer. Warm the house with a stove not the chimney... Secondary burn is also a great improvement because you can get more heat with the same amount of fire. Contrary, the secondary burn chamber will not produce more heat but let you capture it more.
I like the innovation you did to improve the stove heat. WELL DONE.
“Building it for fun” I love you. Thanks for the information. 👏
If you burn well weathered low moisture wood (the correct fuel for burners) you won't get creosote.
Good idea! I really like the secondary burner on top to ignite the smoke.
What is your secondary air tube made from? It looks like copper. It needs to be some thing like stainless steel. It will get very hot and could melt.
They also have a plug that hangs down - our stove is large and VERY hot in the back.. But just using electricity isn't convenient if the power goes out, or in an off-grid cabin etc.
I like your design. Have you noticed whether or not one secondary air tube is enough? Are you going to line the bottom with fire brick?
I simply added another tube on chimney tube,
with larger diameter,
with steel shavings (stainless steel kitchen sponge) between,
tightly packed, they held the largest tube,
but also letting the air pass,
and also steel transmit heat from chimney to larger tube.
If you like, I did some stove videos
(bad quality videos sorry, and not about this improvement, but give some ideas maybe)
Nice to meet you.
Have fun, and very good winter,
stove homemade are so cool....
Old school reclaimer just dived the bottom pipe into 2 like side pocket that way u have even smoke 💨 on the both side of the reclaimer pipe thx I think u get my point let me know if it work I’m 💯 % sure it will work
Nice stove design!!
I would just add boiler plate at the back of the wood stove.
I like your ideas
Frostbite Falls, MN sells these to Bullwinkle
i think rocket stove makes less smoke or creosite or soot
If you're burning efficiently the heat reclaimer shouldnt cause creosote issues.
Yes it will cause more problems if you are burning efficiently. When burning efficiently the stack temps are already low meaning the flue gas temps will drop well below the condensation point quickly
It would be educational to see if the secondary burn works, if it burns cleaner or generates more heat. The custom built stove doesn't address heat loss up the chimney - the concept that you used to introduce your video with the heat re-claimer discussion.
True but my point is i think heat reclaimers are dangerous and unnecessary. If you have an old stove i would just weld a steel plate into it. This is better for fire safety, cheaper, and it works even better.
You need to add 2 more tubes and it will do better
Nonsense...Having so many 90 degree bends like in your video will do far more to worsen creosote than a well built heat reclaimer.
