It's 2024 and I am A, Still in love with Jacqui Abbot! B, Still think Paul Heaton is one of the very best British Songwriters ever, I think most people of my generation can sing along and know the lyrics of most Beautiful South songs even if we didn't realise we were fans at the time.
He didn't write this one. Fred Neil wrote it (and didn't like it. See Professor of Rock's youtube video about how Harry Nilsson hit big with this song after it featured in Midnight Cowboy). That said, it doesn't at all negate your statement
It's like that with most of us. We think we have problems in secondary school, oh boy, then we start work, living on our own having to pay bills, meet a partner, get married, have kids. Damn, the problems back then weren't that bad after all.
Remember listening to this on the car radio on a warm sunny afternoon in 1994 with car window down. It was such a beautiful gentle day, song and weather seem to go together. Weird how this memory has stuck my head.
Ah the days of university life. No worries at all. We were with friends, the sun shone bright and I was with my girlfriend at the time. You cannot ever buy those priceless moments. This song brings it all back. The best version by a country mile for sure. never appreciated Jacqui Abbot back then but I do now. She really is beautiful.
@@tomaszarchie5207 The original hasn't been destroyed. And whether you like or don't like a version of it is subjective. I like it, because I like Jacqui Abbott's voice.
Everybody's talking at me I don't hear a word they're saying Only the echoes of my mind People stopping, staring I can't see their faces Only the shadows of their eyes I'm going where the sun keeps shining Through the pouring rain Going where the weather suits my clothes Banking off of the northeast winds Sailing on a summer breeze And skipping over the ocean like a stone I'm going where the sun keeps shining Through the pouring rain Going where the weather suits my clothes Banking off of the northeast winds Sailing on a summer breeze And skipping over the ocean like a stone Everybody's talking at me Can't hear a word they're saying Only the echoes of my mind I won't let you leave my love behind No, I won't let you leave I won't let you leave my love behind

This is a curious song. Each new version brings out a new dimension of it. My guess is this will last as long as the original slow and the version in the Midnight Cowboy last.
The original singer was a guy called Fred Neil who wrote and recorded it in 1966 but the song became a big hit in 1969 for Harry Nilsson after it featured in the movie Midnight Cowboy and won a Grammy.
Being filmed was such a novelty back then. Everyone is smiling and waving at the camera. How adorable
And probably there was someone standing behind the camera waving and laughing at them. 😁
@@transient_ Laughing with them surely......
At 38 I've only just started to appreciate how good these guys are, I heard them all the time back in the 90's but didn't make a connection.

This sounds great with the volume turned up full. The neighbours agree too as they keep banging on the wall for more 😁
My neighbours use Thor's hammer but I am too deep in her eyes to listen to Mjolnir. :P
I would do too!!

Christ she was a beautiful young woman back then, and what a voice.
She's a beautiful middle aged woman now!

Still is
One of the most beautiful women on earth, eyes to just melt into
Back then? How ungallant! She still scrubs up pretty well.
I love the contrast of the beautiful song (and singer) and the ludicrous bed rolling through the streets - brilliant!
This always reminds me of Only Fools and Horses. A classic show for a classic time.

Harry Nilsson version is good. Prefer it to the original Fred Neil. This is a good cover of the Nilsson version.

@Anthony Dempo It's from a movie called Midnight Cowboy with Angelina Jolie's father and - Dustin Hoffman
but it’s "skipping" not "tripping over the ocean"…
I love this lovely laidback version of the great song.
Beatiful song, no worries, makes me feel calm and happy❤
I’m going where the sun keep shining though the pouring rain
Everybody’s talking at me xx
BEST VERSION OF THIS BY A MILE.
You are obviously deaf,…sorry to hear that…
My mum loves that song 💜
One of the best songs the band did. Just flows along nicely...
Jacqui has a brilliant voice never realized just how beautiful she is.
The North of England has always turned out some of the best pop groups of all time, Sting, Beetles, and the Beautiful South
Learn to spell its Beatles NOT BEETLES AS THAT IS A BUG BS ARE FROM THE NORTHEAST HULL AND THE BEATLES Where NOT A POP POP BAND
Oasis, stone Roses, happy Mondays, Lisa stansfield
I love this song, it takes me right back to when I was 17 years old, and just starting out in life, and it brings back some lovely memories
Great memories, great times.
Same...not so great times, I was fighting a tumour as a 17yr old. Needless to say I'm 44 now, listened to this regularly in hospital.

Very good song. And Jacqui has a great singing voice. It's a shame this only has just over 500,000 views (I wish it had more).
This lady is a beautiful singer and she is also beautiful, salt of the earth❤
I am not a native English but I love this song. There is so much of Englishness in it!
It's the theme song from the film "Midnight Cowboy"
The last great generation of British musicians. The song and composition are not theirs, but their performance is something unbeatable!
She's so beautiful. so is the song..
Absolutely fantastic... Who's with me on that?
Definitely
Remember hearing this version of the song on the radio on a lovely warm sunny summer’s day back in 1994. Alway reminds me of summer of 1994
