Beastie Boys was and is a large part of hip hop and its continuous growth. I was a student at Inglewood High School, in Inglewood California, when their first album Licensed to lll came out. The black population in Inglewood at that time was approximately 70%-80%. We bumped (played) the Beastie Boys like Teena Marie. And you know how much we (black people) love some Teena Marie. Beastie Boys is a Hip Hop Dynasty. And a Party in paradise, rest in peace MCA.
Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Run DMC are the beginnings of "boom bap." That 808 is the "boom" and the snares and high hats are the "bap." Rick Rubin did the production for all three artists. He was a pioneer in hip hop, along with Russell Simmons, when they founded Def Jam. A lot of new jacks don't realize it, but this was really the beginning of the "new school" of rap music. The old school was really the '70s and early 80s era with Melle Mel, Grandmaster Flash, Funky Four Plus One and nem. They didn't even have a drum machine back then. A lot of the tracks were produced with live instruments. The new school marked the era of sampling, drum machines, conversational rapping and advanced lyricism.
To further add, a majority of Sugarhill Records output was done with an in-house live band. It was their "secret weapon" if you will. Then when the mid-80s came drum machines started taking over, then Doctor Dre (not NWA's Dr. Dre) figured out how to make the bass go boom, instead of just as a beat.

These guys are Hip Hop legends they put out their first hip hop single in 1983. MCA made the beat for this and generally they made all their own beats. Everybody was down with them. They discovered LL Cool J and made the beat for his first release. First to bring Public Enemy on tour a few years later the first to bring Cypress Hill on tour. They put out music till 2010 when MCA got sick with cancer RIP. They always followed their own style and never tried to be anything but themselves. Beasties are great. But you're embellishing, and taking away from the truth . Truth IS, LL was the FIRST artist signed to Def Jam. Beasties DID NOT discover him. LL was producing his own demos, and sent one to Def Jam. Also, Run-DMC co wrote this with Ad-Rock. Furthermore, Ice T has said numerous times, 6 in the morning was inspired by PSK.
