    This gentleman explains very clearly one of the facets of this camera. This camera is one that offers so many features that unless one has some familiarity with photographic principles, the learning curve can be quite steep. Even with some familiarity with things like ISO, shutter speed, f-stops and exposure values, the learning curve can still be daunting. However, this being said, the camera is an excellent one, and this presentation is very good. In my humble opinion, the best thing to do is to read as much of the manual as one can, and to see as many videos about this camera as possible until one acquires the necessary familiarity with the way it works. There is also the problem of being able to recall all the many features the camera offers. Again, this camera is excellent for what it can do. It can give the photographer more or less control over the photograph one wants to make. Many thanks to this gentleman for sharing his knowledge and expertise in such a clear and concise manner.

      I am feeling overwhelmed. Just bought this camera. Collecting it tomorrow. I might return it unopened. It seems too complicated for me. It seems to be a great one but too many functions for me.

    7 dislikes? Seriously? Some people are just grumpy and mean.
    I just purchased a Sony RX100M3 and I really enjoyed your clear and concise walk through the menu. I'm typically an avid reader, so I had checked the manual first. The manual is terribly inadequate. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us!
    God Bless.

    Hi Dave. Turn the monitor off
    This is possible.
    Go to settings. 2nd menu page 3
    Goto FINDER/MONITOR
    chose viewfinder instead of the default auto.
    This will make the monitor off when the view finder is up regardless of whether or not your eye is up to the view finder.

    Thank you! I'm have been considering selling my 8-month old Canon Rebel T3i and just using the Sony exclusively--this video all but seals the deal. The Canon is just too bulky for a walk-around camera, and, more importantly, too complicated for my meager ability. I'm just a girl who loves taking pictures of family and scenery but who doesn't want to sacrifice superb image quality that is typical with a "point and shoot". I have had this Sony for about 3 hours and am so impressed by the user friendliness! Your video has some great suggestions that I certainly couldn't have pulled from the Sony online help guide. Love the idea of being able to use memory recall! Vacationing in California and Canada later this year and can't wait to use this little (and I do mean little!) gem!

    I was dismayed by the JPEG image quality compared to my RX100M2, then found out that the smudgey images were thanks to the Long Exposure NR setting. Set that to 'off' and things improved immediately. Just sharing for the benefit of anybody else experiencing that.

    Tip regarding saving battery life:
    If you set the viewfinder setting to viewfinder (instead of auto), the display will be completely turned off when the viewfinder is up (but otherwise active). You won't be needing the pseudo-deactivate button as suggested in the video.

    Have you noticed a slight inaccuracy in metered manual mode. When exposure is set at M.M0 (correct exposure) it can take 2/3rds of a stop (either direction) before it registers either a + or - 0.3 shift (depending which side of + or - run-up to 0). There should only be a 1/3rd stop shift.

    • @dqstudios
      @dqstudios  8 років тому

      +Toll Bar In-Cam Metering is a dark art and I don't trust it much. For critical work, RAW is best, but for personal snaps, I'm ok with Medium JPEGS and chimping the screen after a shot to be sure I've got the exposure I want.

    I wonder if you can help me.
    I noticed you use the front ring for exposure compensation and I'm eager to find out whether exposure compensation works in movie mode. I've searched everywhere and even called Sony today but nobody seemed to know what I was talking about!

    5:15 It's not weird, don't talk this feature down. You can also specify a specific ISO for Mult Noise Reduction when going right in this menu and it will take 4 images and process them together to get a stunning result with less noise. This is a killer feature in low light photography when you need to pick a higher ISO. Actually I use Mult NR anytime when I don't need continuous shutter (many images), because the result is so much better than using regular ISO (unless I am in dynamic conditions where I benefit from better exposure range through Auto HDR Exposure Differences). I never have to modify my preferred drive mode, unless I need the timer, since those features requires single shutter mode and it will jump back to my preferred continuous shutter when I disable any of those again. Mult NR is just not so nice for battery life or when you want to take a lot of pictures in a short time, but it's certainly an upgrade to the image quality.

    Thank you! Very clear, and informative. I love your idea of changing the control ring to exposure compensation. I find that my RX100 iii often gets the exposure wrong, and that is the most frustrating thing to have to change on any camera when you already have focus and composition lined up. But I also use that control ring for manual focus because I do a lot of closeup and 'macro' shots and I find the auto focus really sucks on this camera if you don't have an edge with lots of contrast to focus on. I have focus mode in the function menu, and one of the rocker buttons set to toggle MF and AF (I set mine to the right button, but it's hard to hit it and hold on to the camera at the same time, so I'm going to try setting it to other positions. I do wish we could re-assign that Movie button to back button focus. I 2nd your wishlist for the deactivate monitor option to ACTUALLY deactivate the monitor.

      +Teresa Chueh the first thing he teaches you to change is the control ring to control exposure compensation. You can change it back to change iso if you like

      Yes, but I did exactly what the video said about the control exposure using the ring but like when i go to take a picture and i move the ring it doesn't do anything :(

    Your video on Recommended Settings and Tips was a great help in navigating the RX100M3 menus and settings. I set most settings as you suggest, and that has helped me get comfortable with the camera pretty quickly. However, I'm confused regarding your recommended video settings. You say that the XAVC S plays well with Mac, but that raises some issues:
    1) I currently have a Sony HD TV (not 4K)- so my understanding is that I currently have no way show all the resolution that XAVC S offers. 2) If I were to acquire a 4K TV, would I need Final Cut Pro or some other professional level Mac program to edit XAVC S files? 3) Before buying the RX100M3, I would load AVCHD videos from my SD card into Aperture, iPhoto or iMovie and then edit them in iMovie for display on my HD TV via AppleTV (2nd Gen.). Am I correct in thinking that to continue working that way I should be recording video in AVCHD on the RX100M3? 4) If I use AVCHD, what's the best Record Setting that's also usable by iMovie? 5) Any thoughts on if or when Mac iLife software will be able to handle XAVC S? Is it continent on wide acceptance of 4K TV?
    Finally, you mention a piece of software for translating AVCHD to something more compatible with iMovie, etc. I wasn't able to find what that software was.

      @dqstudios  10 років тому

      Thanks Ken Schroll for the kind words. Will answer what I know.
      1-2) XAVC S Codec and your TV. The codec is NOT 4K; it's still only 1920x1080. The XAVC just allows more MB/second, which requires less compression of the signal than the other codecs.
      3-5) ACHD and iMovie. I'm not an iMovie user or developer so can't answer these in a meaningful way.
      Re: Software. I added the link to ClipWrap on the blog here: notsoancientchinesesecrets.com/sony-rx100m3-review-best-point-shoot-camera/
      Hope this helps and happy shooting :)

      ***** Your response on the XAVC S Codec surprised me, so I did a Google search and found many references to the fact that XAVC S is in fact 4K. Here's an excerpt from a 2013 Sony press release:
      “XAVC S” profile-
      Resolution: 4K (3840 x 2160), HD, and Proxy
      Compression: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
      Wrapping format: MP4
      Audio: Linear PCM and AAC
      Looking further, I found that Apple's App store has an app called iXAVC ($34.99), which can convert XAVC S to Apple Intermediate Codec MOV format, which can then be handled directly by iMovie. The highest resolution iMovie output will be 1920x1080. I'm not sure if the iMovie output will reflect the 60P50M quality of the XAVC S format.
      I used the trial version of ClipWrap on several different AVCHD files from the RX100M3, and it worked flawlessly. Thanks for that recommendation!

      @dqstudios  10 років тому

      Ken Schroll Glad you found ClipWrap useful. Re: XAVC S. Pretty sure RX100M3 can't do 4K (or they'd be selling a looooot more of them). And checked the wiki on it and it says it can support "up to" 4K resolution. Check the specs and you'll likely find RX100M3 has the higher bitrate but lower HD spec. Cheers!

      ***** Dave- you are correct, as usual! The Sony web site says the RX100M3 can do "50Mbps Full HD (1920x1080) 60p high quality video". This is apparently is one of the "versions" of XAVC S, which supports up to 3840X2160 HD.

    Terrific video but need - Help (anyone). Why is the Auto Flash setting grayed out and not available regardless which shooting mode I choose on my RX100M III? How does one make the Auto Flash available and in doing so, does this mean that under low light situations, would the built-in flash "automatically" pop up? Cannot understand why the "Auto Flash" (as well as the "Flash Off" options are always grayed out and not available. Any help wold be appreciated.

    I have a Mac and switched over to the XAVC S file format for videos on my camera, and none of my videos show up on iPhoto or FCPX.. you recommended XAVC S for mac users in this video, but did you mean to recommended AVCHD? I even tried downloading a plug-in for my videos to show up but no luck. Very frustrating.

    Great review, lots of camera not so much talking heads, must be
    an actual secret given the huge number of talking head camera
    guys. I also just picked up the DX100M3, a week before the M4
    announcement. Just one question, on the MR setting I can
    see the 3 different memory settings. On my camera they are
    all the same. I can't seem to get into the settings on each page
    and change the settings. I have the 1.2 firmware. Any hints
    or better yet, another video on how to change the settings
    and maybe some choices like black and white, etc.?
    Cheers

    So I got this camera as of recently and recorded a video in XAVC S format, but when I connect it to my mac pro via usb it will try and import it as mp4. Even if I just go to finder and look at the file it says MP4. Why is that? Is it because I'm not connecting the SD card directly? This makes no sense to me.
