    Hi, having watched a bunch of reviews on this camera, I just wanted to thank you for the time, consideration, effort and immense amount of pertinent information you put into your reviews. Your reviews in general stand head and shoulders above the majority of others. Thanks again, this review was very helpful in my decision to buy the M3 over the M4.

      +Maarten Heilbron Does the flipscreen work while recording a video also is there a time limit to how long you can record videos?? What editing software do you use to edit your videos? Can you please do a video on Sony RX100M3 vs Sony CyberShot RX100 IV and tell us which camera you think is better out of them or you can tell me that in a comment.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      It does. There is - 30 minutes. Final Cut X. The IV is better. Hope this helps.

    I just bought one last July 2014 and I must say, watching you explore and use its different features inspired me to go try explore my Rx100m3 even more. I'm a novice/noob btw. Thanks for the video!

      @MaartenHeilbron  10 років тому +2

      Greggy Felipe Thanks for the compliment! There's a lot to explore - read the manual (the long one) and go try stuff, that's the nice thing about digital. Experimenting costs nothing. Have fun.

  • @rytmolja
    @rytmolja 10 років тому +2

    I agree, great, this is so much more than just a review, it's so instructive that I would love having you make video manuals for all the rest of the settings the RX100 has and how to use them … because even not really being a photo rookie, learning to use this camera will take me a lot of time!
    So take the challenge and make an instruction film. If Sony can't make it, they ought to support you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  10 років тому

      rytmolja Thanks so much, that's very kind. I'll think about that - but I would encourage you to learn on your own. Understanding the settings is one thing, using them effectively to take great photos is another. I just keep learning, and yes, it does take time.

    Excellent review. Thank you for not getting on the spec rant bandwagon and rather focusing on how one might use it in real world scenario. I got mine on the day it was released, played with it exclusively for a month or so before passing it on to my daughter as a replacement to her OM-D E-M5. I bought/downloaded every app available from Sony, but feel that none really offer anything fantastic---kind of gimmicky and perhaps more suitable for novices. Unlike you, I do have a bit of axe to grind with Sony for not providing, or fixing it in the latest firmware update, a disable switch for the EVF power off function. Cheers and keep up the good work!

      It is supposed to be done via sony mobile app you download on your phone and the locations are transfered from the phone to pictures via wi-fi. I used to have that on my Canon S110 and it was pretty accurate so I wondered if you used it and if it was accurate.... Never mind - I think I will succumb to this camera anyway and might let you know later this year. ;-) *****

  • @pe8er8

    Just discovered your channel. Great review. It seems like a very impressive camera.
    I've been shooting professionally for 30 years. I started shooting with the Hitachi FP22, which weighed 25+ lbs, just for the camera! You attached it thru multi-pin cables to a 3/4" recorder (20+ lbs), which recorded onto 20 minute analog tape cassettes!
    But it was such a huge advance that everything changed almost overnight.
    It was the end of TV stations shooting and editing the daily news on film.)
    It was my first taste of what has been a constantly evolving industry driven by amazing technological advances. And this camera looks like another potential game changer.
    It reminds me of when I first saw Sony's PD150. I was hired to shoot a street level documentary of the Salt Lake City Olympics. It was hard to believe that it could be as good as it was technically, and that you could shoot high quality professional work with it because of its size and form factor. But once we tricked them out with wide angle lens adapters, Sennheiser shotguns, and critically important, figured out that a small photography monopod acted like a poor man's Steadicam they were a revelation.
    This camera looks like the beginning of another wave. It seems almost ridiculously cheap and small for the outstanding video results you seemed to easily achieve.
    What do you think? Will it's imagery hold up to colour grading and professional digital editing? Do the impressive hardware/software advances you highlighted compensate enough for the inherent difficulties of trying to achieve professional results under real world conditions with what looks like a toy?
    I would love to have another tool like that in my kit - if it delivers what it seems to promise. Is this camera ready for prime time?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  9 років тому +1

      pe8er8 Clearly your experience indicates a willingness to experiment - so I'd say go for it. It does have some limitations, but remember that the 1 inch sensor is much larger than nearly all camcorders. But you ask specifically about "prime time" - so I'd say no - acknowledging that none of the cameras you mention were ready either, but "prime time" and broadcast quality adjusted to accomodate the flexibility those cameras offered. You will not find the RX100 lacking in quality, you may find it lacking in pro-video features. There are no profiles, no gamma adjustments, etc. Grading may be a challenge, but you won't have any issues editing the XAVC-S format.
      My first portable video experience was with a Sony portapak - although I don't remember the model number. It recorded black and white video on 1/2" open reel tapes, but it enabled us to break free of the studio and do many interesting things.

    Another great review Maarten. I traded my Canon t2i for a Sony a6000 a couple of weeks ago and your review played a huge role in my decision. I am beyond happy with the camera and couldn't believe incredible features and IQ in such a small package. Your reviews are always informative, honest and personal. Its great to hear the opinions of a fellow Torontonian!

    The best reviews on cameras on UA-cam, great job. Can you see any improvements in picture quality between version III and IV? I cannot decide which to buy. Stills are mine priority.

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Thanks very much for the kind words. Please check my flickr collections, or the reviews on dpreview for picture quality comparison. There was a new faster sensor introduced in the IV, but the difference in quality is minor. I'm sure you'd be happy with either.

    I dropped my 8th month old - “old new stock” RX100 and cried.
    Bought a used RX100 III and am still getting used to it. It had an outrigger charger with it.
    Supposedly one of my Sony remotes will work with this model.
    No I.b. - so I am feeling my way.
    Considering that I spent $275US for it - was a happy buyer.
    Still sad about dropping my original model….

    Very good review (as always) and picked up some tips on how to set up camera! One slip of the tongue - twice early on you refer to the wide angle as 16mm full frame equivalent. Wish it were for blogging, but it’s 24mm at the widest.

    The most detail RX100 M3 reviews I've seen! I was wondering if you would be able to do a review of the Panasonic FZ1000. I'm looking for the best (cheapest) 4K solution, but I was wondering if I should just settle for 1080p with the RX10 because of the price drop and ND filters.

      Average Adversary Thanks for the kind words. I'll put the FZ1000 on my "to-do" list. I haven't reviewed the RX10. If you can wait 6-9 months I'm pretty sure there will be a much larger selection of 4K cameras, which might quickly become the video standard for still cameras.

    Great video Maarten. I have a humble budget (USD 500) and I'm thinking either to buy a RX100M1 or the alpha5100 w/kit lens. In one hand RX100 has a nice glass with f1.8 and portability vantage, and in the other hand a5100 has a much larger sensor, the a6000 focus system, WiFi, and isn't much bigger at a lower price. I'm interested in good quality image, low light capabilities, in a good constructed body. Which do you think is best?
    Thanks for your time.

    I just received my A6000 yesterday, so I can't justify buying another camera just yet, but I did notice that the price of the RX100 Model 1 has now dropped to the price of a good point & shoot camera! I wonder how much longer the Model 1 will be available?

    this is a brillant Video. as the zoom is not so strong, is the Image still sharpened when you cut a certain area out of the picture on your computer?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      I appreciate your kind words. In video, if you are shooting 4K and inputting HD, you can zoom up to 200% with no apparent loss of quality. For images, that's a subjective decision. It depends on the final output - for example, depending on the amount of zoom it might not be noticeable on a web page, but it would be noticeable on a large print.

      It's nice that you combine your love of travel and photography. The videos are informative but personal, which gives a nice dimension. It looks like you have a lot of fun together! I ordered an a6000 today and will try it out. The Nikon 5300 has been suggested to me. My only experience with Nikon was the 3200, an entry level camera which produced greenish looking fuzzy pictures. Is it true that Nikon tends more towards green/yellow inately? I have read this from another professional photographer's reviews...thanks again for your videos and your replies!

      +Merel hier! Vragen mag altijd, maar ik hoop dat je het niet vreselijk vind als ik in engels antwoordt. My Nederlands vocabulary isn't good enough to do tech talk. I'm not sure which problem you're having - that autofocus wanders or drifts, or just doesn't work. There are sadly too few options for focus in video mode. In the auto focus continuous mode, if face recognition doesn't work for you (it doesn't for me) then try manual. It's not as easy, but unless you're moving a lot, I find it works well. I hope this helps, let me know.

      EMAlife Thanks for the kind words, I always enjoy hearing from interested viewers. Standard SD cards work in the RX100M3, you only need one. Faster cards (class 10) will recover faster in burst shooting. If you want to shoot video in XAVC-S you'll need SD-HC, which would be my recommendation for both still and video shooting.

    Hi there, I really love your reviews on camera. It's not long and boring like most of the reviews out there. Anyway I'm looking for a camera that is easy to use, for travelling, just for casual snaps but provides good quality photos.. I've watched your review on Sony a5100, but after watching your review on this RX100 M3 , I'm confused lol. So between a5100 and RX100 M3 which one do you recommend??? Thanks

    What wrist band do you recommend with it?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  10 років тому

      ***** One that's available to you (I shop at Henry's in Toronto) One that's comfortable for you (the advantage of going to a local retailer) One that's the right size for the camera. In the video I'm using the peak design, but it's actually a little too large for the RX100. A smaller one, like one I have on my A6000 from Roots might have been better. There are lots to choose from - I likely don't have enough experience with the wide variety available to make a solid recommendation. That said, I do prefer a wrist strap for smaller cameras over a neck band - which make you look like a tourist.

    Maarten very nice review ! I'd say the best review of this little piece I've seen. I know you own the a6000 and nex6, so comparing in picture quality what can you say?. I have canon 6d and 70d with L glass and I know this RX100 doesn't produce same quality, however I need a pocket size camera for traveling and carrying 6d or 70d is sometimes tired. Would you recommend this camera in picture quality? appreciate your thoughts.. ( I like nex6 and a6000 but they are not pocket size )

      Mike guitar Considering the size of the camera, the size of the sensor and the size of the lens, the images are astounding - I've blown up low light images to 24x36 and am very pleased. RX100MK3 or A7II or X100T or A6000 or E-M5 II???

    I have the EOS-M which I love outdoors but I want something really really fast for indoors. I keep coming back to the A7II but then...the RX100 is just so much easier to carry. I know I need to make up my mind on what my priorities are...portability or speed.
