    +1 for some great ToME content and a wonderful guide.
    10:03 Probably mentioned in this section or elsewhere in the video, but the biggest hurdle I found transitioning from Nightmare to Insane was the increase spawn rate of Rares, Uniques, and now random Bosses. In Nightmare 95% of the time you're able to orchestrate it so the single rare/unique you're fighting is alone. Infrequently you'll have to fight 2 at the same some, though never a pair of Uniques (in my experience).
    On Insane difficulty...fighting multiple rare(s) + unique(s) + random boss in some combination happens all the time. If you need to run and it's an unexplored area...you can't afford to roll the dice and go that way since chances are you might aggro another rare/unique.
    Haven't won yet on Insane Roguelike but recently made it to the Far East with a character for the first time.

      Those are definitely some of the most dangerous fights and they eventually always happen, no matter how careful you try to be.
      Getting to the East on Insane is a huge milestone, congrats!

    Great tips and a damn solid video!
    Some comments and my own advice:
    01:20 - Regarding the dungeon order, I do prefer to go for Kor'Pul and Norgos first rather than Trollmire since I find it easier to keep track of escorts there (lots of narrow halways vs chaotically arranged trees of Trollmire), but I guess it's not a big deal.
    It should also be noted that after around lvl 11 (can't remember exactly) T1 bosses get juiced up significantly, especially Bill. If you do go Trollmire late, than either kill Bill before lvl 11 or avoid him until later since he can mess you up badly (lost a sun pala to mortal terror stunlock) + some other nasty things can spawn with Bill, like a unique rogue wasp or a Patch-Work Troll, so that's another reason to leave it for later in some cases.
    07:03 - Again, good advice overall, but I think tools/trinkets should also be mentioned. I personally really like to get Psionic Shield Torques on melee clasess, because they can be an absolute lifesavers against other melee guys (especially "multihit" classes like rogues or sh*dowblades). Having a Rod of Clairvoyance and switching to it occasinally can also be good for tracking if you can't get it via talents. Finally, Lightning Storm Rod is great for kiting or just chain-dazing enemies. Overall, I always try to keep several and switching when needed.
    08:51 - I, for one, think that Sh*dowblades are some of the biggest bastards in this game, but I guess it mostly applies to somewhat later stages when they get their Ambush talents (shadow guard, shadow grasp, shadow veil).
    16:58 - It could be my own very unfortunate experience, but I really don't think Old Forest is "alright." I am not entirely certain, but it seems that it has higher odds of spawning some insect-type enemies with 200% global speed who can be ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. I lost a sun pala there to some randboss cursed bug who literally jumped out of nowhere and took my HP into negative in one turn. Later I almost lost a stone warden the same way. After that, I just said "fuck Old Forest" and I no longer do it until after Dreadfell (being overleveled also alows me to save escorts there more effectively, so that's nice).
    24:50 - "Also, if your race is undead. you obviously don't need this" - unless you are a Ghoul. Ghouls, for some reason, still need to breathe, so getting the belt and becoming "double undead" is still useful for them.
    26:31 - Yeah, Dark Crypt sucks. However, I have found a somewhat consistent way to do it without getting destroyed (but it's not 100% effective, obviously). Basically, I do NOT get lvl 25 in T2 and go straight to the Crypt. Instead, I get to around 99% exp at lvl 24, go to Dreadfell and lvl to 25 there, I then continue clearing Dreadfell and get to the world map at like lvl 30-35. Enemies in the Crypt don't actually scale that much with your lvl (always at around 40), so being higher lvl certainly helps. If you are lucky, it is possible to reach Ruined Halfling Complex and get even more levels. If you are very lucky, you may also get Conclave Vault or even reach Daikara or even Urkis to get a bigger advantage. Finally, don't forget to bring some blight resist gear, some way to track and maybe something like the Blazing Star to see the map, dig a lot, and it should be somewhat okay unless RNG really hates you.
    The Giant Worm, however, sucks and I also almost never bother with it, but I guess you can follow a similar scheme.

      18:14 - one more tip: when you have to run away while blinded, turn off your bump attacks so you don't accidentally hit an enemy and waste a turn. I keep it off on my non-melee chars all the time, but turn it off on others for situations like this. The same may also apply to confusion.

    Some solid advice here, thanks!
    You can get an insurmountable level advantage over the two hard special start bosses. For the Shalore merfolk one, just go up the stairs you land on after going through the portal and come back whenever it's convenient. For the Drem start in the intestine-looking area, there is enough time for you to go to the world map first and clear the first two levels of your starter T1 area of choice (don't use autoexplore, it wastes too many turns). Use the recall, and then clearing the other intestine monsters will get you at least to level 4 to unlock some T2 talents.
    Speaking of T1 area of choice, I like to do Norgo's first because when you take it very early it doesn't spawn the ice creatures with area damage that more often than not ruins escort quests that occur there. Further, speaking of escorts, there's a weird behavior where sometimes the game wants to spawn an escort in an area with doors but won't do it because with the doors closed there isn't a path between where you start and where it wants to put a portal. You can get these escorts for free if you come back to the level after full-clearing it! If you start in Kor'Pul, as with Krog, this seems to happen on the first floor about half the time. It's fairly common later in Dreadfell too.

    • @Drybe
      @Drybe  Рік тому +4

      Going to Norgos Lair first to avoid the ice enemies is genius, I never thought about that. I try to bring a heal totem/shield wand, just for the ice AoE, but it's still dangerous for the escorts.
      Thanks for sharing.

  • @luka188

    This is amazing. Granted, I did know many things already, since I have played hundreds of hours on insane difficulty, however I never managed to beat it in all those hours... I got to the final boss 3 times and got beaten every time unfortunately, but by far most characters died in the T1's or especially in the first or second T2 dungeon.
    For me, it takes some 4 or so hours to get to the T2 dungeons, and almost all my characters would die there, or just before there...
    Granted, I was stubborn, and I only played difficult classes. I avoided the powerful classes which have an easier time on insane difficulty, and played only Berserker or Bullwark, refusing to pay different classes until I managed to beat the game, which in hind sight I should have switched and tried different classes before burning out after having hundreds of deaths. Berserker shouldn't be too difficult, but I still kept messing up and dying anyway, all of them around level 18-20. I made it to the final boss on Bullwark 3 times (Out of probably at least 60 attempts which ended before level 20), and died all three times.
    Definitely, I find on insane, the final bosses can be quite difficult when you don't have much practice against them, and the reason I died to them is because I reached them so rarely that I kept being ill prepared to deal with them.
    I stopped playing on my third death to the final boss on insane, which I finally made it there after I had died dozens of times in a row, and had an excellent run, but messed up my opening turns on the final boss and lost the run in a few turns. It was demoralizing, so I quit, but this video makes me want to give it a go again and perhaps try finally to get my win on insane.

    This is really great, I like how you come across with your advice it's beginner friendly.. I've had ToME for a while but my main problem seems to be not focusing on the details and that's what usually gets me killed.
    Have you considered doing a Let's Play, or a stream of the gameplay? I'd love to see that.

    • @Drybe
      @Drybe  8 місяців тому +2

      I did two short playthroughs of specific zones.
      Maze: ua-cam.com/video/I4_cxrT87t8/v-deo.html
      Alternate Sandworm Lair: ua-cam.com/video/hsYzMzkhhAo/v-deo.html
      I might do more of those, but I don't see myself ever doing a full let's play like that. I enjoy playing the game at my own pace and recording it makes me feel like I need to rush (even though I obviously don't, as I could edit anything out later).
      I plan on making a video with general tips... sometime, when I get around to it.

    Likely should have noted that Tier 1 Rhaloran Vaults can have different enemies to be fought. Nothing like opening up to a Cultist or Blood Mage Rhaloran caster that is over twice your level. Another thing worth mentioning is Track - be it via item or talent. Knowing where enemies are is helpful to avoid fights you don't want to get into.

    Literally died in the dark crypt lol. It was super close on many occasions and I thought "I should probably get out", but the fact that you can't enter it again and also that it's so difficult really made me want to complete it (it's a real challenge).

    • @Drybe
      @Drybe  8 місяців тому

      I remember the worst part being if you spawn on floor 1 in a room full of enemies (which is unlikely, but not that rare), you're probably just dead and it feels pretty cheap.
      If the entrance would be safe, it would be a lot more manageable.

      @Drybe  Рік тому +1

      I didn't plan on it originally, as I wasn't sure if there would be enough to talk about, but you made me think more about it and I probably could.
      I want to make a video about Solipsist first, but I'll eventually make something similar to this for the later part of the game.
      For now, I always do Dreadfell as the last T3 dungeon, so I'm pretty high level around 38. Having Track is really important, so that you can clear the whole level first, without aggroing The Master, so you have room to kite/run away.
      Using the Rune of Dissipation (from completing Urkis quest) at the start of the fight to strip his sustains helps a lot. Then just do your best to burst him, but don't be afraid to run away and reset, if you get surrounded/overwhelmed by his minions. Once he resurrects, you can go back to the previous floor, fully rest up and then go back to finish him.
      I have a different Sun Paladin run recorded, where I fight him for a long time and it will work well as a showcase.

    tutorial: pay for the game, pick "posessor" class.. then either pick doomelf or krog for starting race, thats it
    you may now literally become a dragon or demon with 10% less in the original beings stats.. oh acid damage? just become the being with resistance to it. all possible as long as you "pokeball" their hp with your ability
    krog= dragon
    doomelf= demon
    drem/dwarf= horror

  • @kkplx
    @kkplx Рік тому +1

    i will refer to this daily as i start climbing the levels - made it to 30 only so far.
    if i may make a suggestion - a class agnostic video on gearing would be helpful.
    are there early drops you can keep until lategame? items you might find early that you won't need immediately, but are invaluable later, like a resistance piece for example? Which slots carry what kinds of attributes?
    etc.
    another one that came to mind: WTF is a good or bad mindstar, how important is weapon and shield damage value vs their other stats, etc.

    • @Drybe
      @Drybe  Рік тому +1

      A lot of the powerful modifiers only show up from a certain level and the higher the item tier, the higher the numbers. For example early rings will usually only have 20% stun immunity, later on they get up to 50% stun immunity.
      Same goes for resistances, so you don't need to save items like that.
      You can find all kinds of stats on most slots, though jewelry is good at giving you status immunities.
      If you attack with your weapons, you generally want to just prioritize highest damage numbers(or power % if you turn on Advanced Weapon Statistics in the options).
      For shields generally prioritize block value.
      Mindstars are confusing, because they can either be used as powerful melee weapons with the help of the Psiblades sustain, or they can be utilized by casters like Staves, simply as stat sticks, where you can completely ignore the actual damage numbers and you only care about the item modifiers.
      It's a difficult topic to explain concisely and I remember how overwhelming it can be.

      No, XP levels will be different on lower difficulties.
      Rare/Unique/Boss enemies give the most XP and they spawn more often the higher difficulty you play.
      Also races have different XP modifiers (you can see it, when creating a character)

      You can look here in character menu at the addons I currently use: te4.org/characters/266609/tome/bf36b449-a520-4478-833c-8790b900dc60
      I simply subscribe to them through Steam workshop, they're all great simple QoL addons, they don't change anything gameplay wise, so you can still get achievements.
      Recognizing which enemies are dangerous unfortunately mostly just comes from experience.
      Generally you don't want to spend turns standing next to melee classes, without them being disabled in some way (stun, disarm), but it's easier said than done.
      I plan on making a video about the danger of each classas an enemy at some point.

    It's better to take heart of the gloom first at lvl 5 so you won't see many rares. Then trollmire because last boss can be very dangerous after lvl 10.
