@@Shadow_Draws_20 Unless SSO goes under or is bought out like AOs devs were and don't care about their IP anymore it can't legally be done unless SSO does it themselves. Maybe some day they could or just give out an old graphics texture pack, but even a texture pack would take some effort to work and add things onto it like and old model for the new characters like the 4th dark rider, would be interesting to see her in an older graphics style no lie.
@@huntermoonhearth Yeah, and lots of old MMOs have classic versions or legacy servers available, like RuneScape, WoW, EverQuest... It'd be nice if SSO would join the club.
Idk, does it still fall under copyright if it's an older version of their game that doesn't exist anymore? I guess they still own the Starshine and Season Rider games which still have those graphics and concepts. Oh well...
@@MusicComet It doesn't matter whether or not they still use any of it, that's not how copyright works. Stuff is covered by copyright for a VERY long time, as in, you may not even still be alive when the copyright eventually expires. Even when there isn't a legal holder for a copyright anymore, it's still under copyright protection, and no one is legally allowed to do anything with it until that protection expires. People often look the other way when it comes to pirating abandonware (software, such as games, that is no longer accessible though any legal first or second party means), but it's still not really legal, and old SSO doesn't really count as abondonware, because old and new SSO count as being the same game, no matter how you feel about that. The Season Rider games may count as abondonware, since I'm unaware of any official way to play them, though I'm not exactly going to encourage looking for pirate copies.
As an older player who started in 2014 I can say it wasn't perfect back then (but then again what is perfect in life?) but it was Star stable online as we knew it. What made it better in comparison to today's game is that there was an actual challenge in questing and finding your way through the game. Such as dayblockers that just got deleted from the game. With these dayblockers you were stopped from playing the whole day long. It was a good thing cause you couldn't complete the game within a month like you can now if you play every day. It also gave you a touch of reality like in real life certain stuff can't be fixed within a few hours so having to wait a day made it more exciting to continue and gave you the idea you actually earned the next part of the quests. Another challenge was that certain quests were actually hard to do (until they were made easier). Like the very beginning of the game where you had to sabotage G.E.D's work place or something and when one of the workers caught you you had to start over that challenge got removed. Same goes for the deadth horse thing. When you used to fall off a cliff or a high mountain your horse lost strength and when you sort of died you were sent back to your home stable and needed to take care of your horse. And in real life if your horse is enjured or tired you have to take care of it. In the game it got slower and moody and now that's sort of taken away as well. And the home stable used to be smaller. If you reached the maximum amount of horses in your stable you had to sell one of your horses to buy a new one that taught you to work with money and that you can't have everything at once. And we used to have horse island for our horses to take a short vacation so that they could regain strength. Another thing that made the old game better was the more dark theme behind the storyline. The story used to based off Starshine legacy and that was a pretty dark game. Nowadays it's more light hearted and more silly then it used to be. The soundtracks were more mysterious and scary at times. That gave the story that extra boost to draw you in to the story (music is the next thing I'm going to mention) The npc's were not that dumb or ignorant compared to now. For instance James can apparently boss around grown ups and he's treated like a king nowadays in the revamped questline 🙄 Because he made people believe with a scheme that a horse can talk through a device. Even the guard from Fort Pinta acts like James is a king and that the horse rules (major Peanut). Like who would believe such a lie??? The old James was more nice and adults around him disliked him for his schemes and couldn't take him seriously when he wanted a ridiculously amount of money. Another thing that blows my mind with the new game is that apparently everyone on Jorvik knows about the Soulriders and the druids. Even the Soulriders are more open about themselves to outsiders. The keepers of Aideen used to be more secretive and folks around Jorvik didn't really know what their cause was about or what they're doing. Even the player character didn't know much about them for a long time until we gained their trust more. Then there is background music. The old music was so much more relaxing and comforting. It was mysterious and elegant at the same time. The new music is just like any other sort of music today not very unique. SSO had a original sound that you couldn't confuse. Every time I started the game I heard the beautiful calming music that accompanied me on my journey through the game. Every area in the game had it's own unique soundtrack. Another thing is reputation with folks around Jorvik. There were so many reputations that you had to build on in orde to gain people's trust to continue a questline or unlock a reward. Nowadays with all the challenges removed you don't learn to gain someone's trust and you can just continue the story which is the reason why you complete the game so early. We used to have the sun citcle training, Lighting citcle training and so many older reputation quests like the gardening or the farmers family's in the Harvest Counties that made you work towards a reward. Lastly the graphics. I understand a game has to update itself to stay alive but the old graphics were so much better and original. No other game had these kind of textures and graphics. Now it's all the same with other games. That's why it's not unique anymore. All of this summoned is why the old Star stable was better and shows what is wrong with the game today.

Honestly, I'm not too sure how to feel about this. I am 100% an advocate for games preservation, and that includes online games and their history, even though it's somewhat antithetical to that mere principle. Additionally, I don't think it's necessarily true that the only people wanting to play classic SSO are people who have been playing it the longest; I started playing SSO around 2021 and I do have a yearning for the classic experience just to see what I missed and how different or similar the core gameplay and story was. The prospect is dim but like you said, not entirely impossible. I'd like to see a sort of OSRS-style Classic SSO revival, just to live the experience for myself. Beggars can't be choosers, though. //shrugs I can't really say for sure if Better SSO is a scam or not personally; I'm not skilled nor educated enough to make that observation with certainty. I do, however, sort of feel for the person working on the project to an extent. Is that weird? Idk, like to me, they just seem genuinely hurt in their Discord posting about it and I can understand why people deeming your passion project as malware can be totally soul-crushing... Still rather fishy, though. Asking for money/star coins is pushing it, ngl... I mean at the end of the day, everyone has their own discretion on whether to download it or not (I personally wouldn't because I'm not willing on taking that kind of risk when I don't know how to mitigate around everything if the worst were to flourish from it lol but I encourage highly tech-savvy folk to at least investigate into it further IF and ONLY IF they know what they're doing and getting into).
I absolutely agree with game/media overall being preserved, especially since companies have been pushing for digital products for years now and the who issue with "buyers getting comfortable with not owning their games" statement made by some CEOs. Now more than every people need to find a way to safely preserve games and movies. The reason I said the only people wanting old SSO is older players is more so because many new players (children) don't know about old SSO, it comes down to a person by person bases, some might have a sibling or something that mentioned it and know but the majority don't. Like people wanted to preserve old games as well, are still a bit of a minority for this community too. It just seems sketchy given the amount of players even recently saying how they miss the old SSO and all of a sudden "Here you go! Old SSO. Enjoy." It is just fishy to me, on top of the illegal stuff of course. Just something people shouldn't support, even if it wasn't a scam, it was safe, still illegal and harming SSOs' finances and could cause even more issues.

No matter how much you want to play this please DON’T. Even if you know someone who managed to download it and didn’t get malware DO NOT TOUCH IT. In my job, I work very closely with cyber security in the professional world and plan to start formal education on the subject this fall.
I can very confidently tell you that scammers and cyber threats are hidden behind smart wording to make you believe you are safe. That’s the entire goal of a scammer. Until there is confirmation that this is safe, which is incredibly doubtful at this point, don’t go anywhere near this program.
Ehat baffles me honestly is the amout of people ive seen who deny that its a scam and say people are overreacting, like you said nostalgia is a hell of a drug but even nostalgia wouldn't get me to download that evej just MIGHT be a virus
I know the sso community always yaps about nostalgia (including me) but even so, i dont think anyone would like old sso to be back. It was still toxic and bad back then , but we all sugarcoat it with memories of the "good times"
I am not sure how toxic it was back then compared to now, but I am sure a lot of people are focusing on the good memories over the bad, or have even forgotten or blurred out any bad because of nostalgia.
What do you mean exactly? Why toxic?
@terezab6718 as in, I see some people saying how good it was but imo, it had a worse community and a lot of bullying .
as an old player from 2015 i may miss the soul the game had, but making a whole illegal copy about it is straight up wrong and emberrassing as heck. i would never even dare to touch something like this cuz of nostalgia. id rather wait for texture packs or play starshine legacy
Texture packs would be a nice way to make some side revenue no lie, collectors and older players would love it. Would take a while though because of needing to make old graphic textures for new assets and Erissa.
@@huntermoonhearth frrrr!
As a old player I chose to deal with change cus that natural thankfully I didn’t fall for this scam because I learned to love the new sso
Im the person who made the first reddit post and it was kinda a jumpscare seeing it here lol. I deleted it because i was getting literal death threats and such awful things private messaged to me. Id like to make clear i supported the project before i knew about the horrible owner, the scams and the malware. As i learned about it i did delete it. The tiktok i mentioned in it was made 2 hours ago as of posting that post and all i saw was a cool thing that worked for me and wanted to share, but i forgot how awful the sso community was as they would not have a nice converstation with me about it or listen to my pov and only accused me of putting people in danger? Lol idk 😬
@@dragonbirdfox I saw the reddit post and comments so I know no one was being cruel to you there. As for private messages, I am sorry they did that, it was wrong and they could have been kinder and had no right to do that.
@@huntermoonhearth yeah they werent mean to me there but would just be against everything i said and someone even accused me of being part of the team and forcing people to play? When i defended myself they were always against me D:
@@RimFaxxe i wasnt able to research something that nobody knew of yet D: there was literally nobody talking about it or any info on it, since it had been posted about 2 hours ago as of when i made my post.
I miss the old sso too, but not enough to put my personal info at risk. Besides, I've come to accept how sso is, now a long time ago. As I've said to people, as long as I'm having fun, I'm going to keep playing. And I'm not hating the new sso as much as I originally once thought I would.
I don't blame these people for wanting nostalgia. Nostalgia itself isn't a bad thing, but the control it can have on people is. Once it starts taking control to where you're making bad decisions; example, downloading bsso, its then when you should stop and step away and take a good look at what you're doing.

Unfortunately I downloaded it and had it on my computer for a couple of weeks. Logged into my bank account/other things. I haven’t had any problems though, no transactions made that weren’t from me. I did uninstall it, though I’m a bit worried that won’t do much. I’m not really sure what to do, I’ve changed all my passwords and have ran AV and Malawarebytes on my computer. Please do not download this if you want your personal information stolen or viewed.
This is the time I’m glad I’m mainly a mobile player so I can’t fall for it 😭( my laptop can’t run anything and my dad is always using his plus it doesn’t have a mouse and he won’t buy one)

Tysm for this video!!
//shrugs
I can't really say for sure if Better SSO is a scam or not personally; I'm not skilled nor educated enough to make that observation with certainty.
Not to mention we still have to pay… Just pay for og game, at least you know it won’t disappear suddenly
@@Kaz0140 Yeah that's shady af, a 13 year old game with bad graphics in my opinion, I am not sure how much they charged but it's just stupid.
