The Worst Plot Line in the Love Live Franchise....so far

- This honestly bothers me so much. Yeah a lot dumber things happen, but nothing that actually does real damage to my ability to enjoy a character. The writers did her so dirty here.

If anyone has any other examples of a series painting a character in a good light while they’re actually just being terrible human beings pls lemme know
It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember being terribly angry at literally every male love interest in the series "Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo", especially the main character Sorata. It all starts fun and sweet enough, but in the 2nd half of the series the different characters and their relationships get explored more deeply and it sure gets… something. But let's keep it to Sorata. There's the titular heroine Mashiro Shiina, who is an incredibly talented artist, but is shown to can't handle literally any other, daily task (hence why MC is taking care of her). Sorata proceeds to get, let's say, quite jelly of her successes with her art when he keeps failing on his own goals. If I remember correctly he more than once lashes out at her and goes so far to even blame her, even though it's made pretty clear that this is absolute bull. While this is not necessarily depicted in a positive light, this Mister never really gets reprimanded for his shitty behavior, especially not by Shiina of course who just feels guilty and heartbroken about it. The series gets praised for its realistic portrayal of human feelings, and yeahh I guess so, does not mean I enjoy seeing characters being a dick and then just getting away with it. Because that's what happens, Sorata and his other wonderful male companions act all kinds of questionable, but their female love interests still woefully accept it and keep loving the guys - for SOME reason. So in the end I still felt like the writing put their crappy behavior in a favorable light, when really there should have been more consequences on how it affected their relationships.
And I just remembered Shigatsu no Uso / Your Lie in April … oh boy. Our MC has such a deep trauma with playing the piano that he can't play it anymore, it basically gives him severe panic attacks, trauma flashbacks and other severe issues that are e.g. auditory. But he's SUCH a good PIANIST so he MUST get out of his slump and play again because it would be such a WASTE! - his two best friends say and force him into it. You know, because they care so much. (and yes, they keep pushing him even though he voices he does not want that and gets triggered several times.) The worst is however how the mother of the MC was depicted. Hohh boy… Until she deceased, she literally always abused this boy. She is the very cause of his piano trauma - She forced him to study the piano to no ends as a young child. She slapped him when messed up. She slapped when he was happy he won a competition. But it's all good because she did it all out of love as it turns out (in our MCs head) ☺️ You truly need to witness this yourself to believe it, I nearly lost my mind in the episode when the anime very suddenly decided to redeem this evident demon parent in the clumsiest way imaginable. Boy is basically gaslighting himself to believe his mother all did it for his sake and it was actually all his fault that he felt so miserable all this time. Well ain't that a great message.
1:37 I'm pretty sure Mari's injury was meant to portray that she was overworking herself by being too focused on winning... Remember Kanan even throws their choreography book on the ocean because she worries the same might happen to Chika and she might hurt herself. It's even followed up by their Miracle Wave performance with the risky backflip. I really don't know where the idea that Kanan was worried about Mari leaving her came from, she was worried that Mari would hurt herself and lose opportunities for her future wasting time on their dead end Idol activities...
yeah I was trying to emphasize that I understand exactly the messages and motivations they were trying to portray. That’s what makes it the worst plot line. The choices they made completely subverted the message they wanted to convey. If they wanted to make Kanan controlling gf type that would be fine, but they explicitly wanted her to be a caring friend and then didn’t have her actions match that. Her motivations didn’t make any sense when they got rid of the injury. Then when Kanan flipped during the confrontation and said that all Mari cared about was winning and didn’t affirm their friendship, it was the nail in the coffin.
I’m analyzing these actions as if this was a real relationship and not just a poorly written plot device to further a fluff anime. This is why I don’t really see the anime as “canon” since they often do this to characters, much like Honk in the first series.
@@Keygen-0 Well, here's my thoughts on this. I'm not trying to criticize the story in any way, just so you know. I think it's supposed to be an incentive to cause a flip in the viewer's perspective and in turn, make them think not about the question of 'What's the point of it?', but rather the reason 'why' it's being done. Despite the repetitive storyline that the writers did for it, it still helps to flesh out the characters, *especially Kanan, who didn't have much of a spotlight in earlier episodes of Love Live: Sunshine.* I mean, she literally told Mari that if she was thinking about her instead of winning, she could've just said it outright and it would've been fine. The reason that Mari slapped her is because she was getting tired of Kanan always focusing on the smaller things such as not losing the competition, when she was just refusing to step back and see the real picture.
I say this as a big love live fan I feel like “gaslighting the audience into thinking the conflict is more solid then it actually is” sums up so much of the franchise lol
From what I remembered, Mari injured herself doing the miracle wave flip, which is what made Kanan so closed off. The arc would truly come to an end when chika successfully flips during love live
I’m a Kanan Stan! I will say it this, Kanan let Mari go so she could have opportunities that not many people their age would get. But Mari came back to try and reconcile with Kanan, but Kanan was feeling guilty because she knew she hurt Mari, and you can see at the shrine she was holding back her feelings to the point that she was holding back her tears. That video only showed the bad side of the situation. It didn't show anything leading up to it or after it because Kanan truly does care about Mari to the point where she would disregard her own feelings just for her.
yeah but this was spoonfed exposition that they had to deliver from Dia. This isn’t a critique of Kanan’s character. It’s a critique of the writers failing to write a simple backstory. There are an infinite amount of ways to get what this across. The opportunity thing is a nonsensical reason for someone of Mari’s status. They should have moved forward with Mari being obsessed with winning and Kanan no longer feeling like they were friends. Instead they shoved in multiple other things that made no sense. The injury excuse would’ve worked too but instead that was thrown so it really didn’t need to be in there at all. It’s objectively bad writing.
i happened to see this on my feed and decided to give it a watch. it was definitely interesting to see a different perspective on the third years drama as i saw it very differently.
i will say as a diehard kanan fan, the writing of the show doesn’t do her justice mainly bc she gets pushed aside a lot for other characters, and honestly as much as i love sunshine, it definitely doesn’t have the best writing unfortunately. anyways, kanan is very interesting. she cares about others and puts their feelings above her own, even to a point where it causes problems. i think this is what happened with her and mari. kanan lies to mari bc she thinks that mari going abroad is a good opportunity for her but she doesn’t know how to say that so she just lies instead. plus i don’t think she realized that mari was happy just being with her friends. personally i think it’s bc kanan doesn’t see others feelings the way they do and she also will hide the truth from others even if it’ll hurt the person. and since mari did end up going abroad, kanan has to deal with the fact that she lied and that’s why she acts so distant and bitchy around mari. she was even distant prior to mari leaving bc she’s aware that she screwed up so badly, i don’t think she bullied her out of the group, she just distanced herself out of guilt.
i may be misinterpreting the scene a bit since it’s been a while since i’ve watched the show but i hope my attempt of a kanan analysis wasn’t horrible and that it made sense. also sorry if it’s a little long, i wanted to make sure all my thoughts were together and coherent enough.
This was absolutely just the fault of the writers picking the exact wrong motive for Kanan. They wanted to show her being a good friend and had so many options and picked something that made no sense 😭😭 they already had the injury set up and then they just threw it out. Why???
And even if they followed through logically and had Kanan throwing a teen girl fit over her friend leaving her. That wouldn’t even make her a bad character. That would actually make her the most interesting character, but that would be waaay to controversial for an idol anime tbh. I love flawed characters, but it’s clear after what they did to Lanzhu in the anime they can’t really handle them.
It’s just annoying cause even tho I know what the writers are going for if I can’t just push out my own common sense. ESPECIALLY since they have her leaving to study abroad at the end. For college. When it would actually make sense to say she can’t miss her opportunity at a good university. The writers were just straight up disrespectful thinking nobody would think about this. I made this whole video to vent and I’m still not over it LOL. So rambling aside I totally understand your analysis of Kanan and believe that is 100% what the writers were trying to convey. They just chose something that made no sense. Also a very weird contrast to the Honoka and Kotori conflict. Kotori might have actually given up a very real opportunity, since she doesn’t have the same connections as Mari. Writers L but they’ve already been holding it since having muse break up after 1 year. Meanwhile we have a whole catalogue of music showing they did not 🫠
@@Keygen-0 yeah absolutely. the writers definitely could've chosen a better motive. Honestly, that's kind of the best way to describe love live's writing in general,bc as much as i do enjoy the series, the writing is very very flawed
I found the plot where Eli deliberately sabotaged early muse because she was jealous and that she found all idol group amateurish to be extremely stupid as well.
It's literally the exact same plot as Nico except Eli doesn't give a shit about being an idol and joins anyways it's so jarring that they pulled it twice and thought we wouldn't notice
Oh my god THANK YOU! THANK YOU so MUCH - you just put in words what has been bugging me SO. FREAKING. much since watching the Aqours anime back then, and no one ever batting an eye about this made me so unbelievably mad. I literally do NOT understand how Kanan was so popular after that (aside from Suwawa being an absolute amazing cutie, of course - no hate towards her!!!) - I did not mind Kanan in the games, albeit finding her a bit a boring, but this shit rubbed me SOOoo much the wrong way, I just wasn‘t able to enjoy her for a long time as character anymore after that. (I can even pinpoint the exact moment when Kanan messed up for me for real: when she walked by Mari who offered her her big warm haggu. Just, YOU COLD SONUVA-) You‘d also notice that in most dialogues in Love Live SIFAS whenever she was in a scene with Mari, Mari only so much as needed to breathe and Kanan was /immediately/ starting to nag how annoying/loud/whatever she was. It’s as if the writers sometime decided that one of her character traits MUST include 'be a shit to Mari whenever possible'. With time I learnt to enjoy Kanan on her own again, heck her character songs belong to my favourites of the bunch - but whenever she appears together with Mari and she opens her mouth I go NU-UH, I get triggered and angry and URGH!!! For all my ragey wall of text however, I wouldn’t say I hate Kanan. I just REALLY DISLIKE her relationship with Mari. (I loathe how the infinitely superior combination Mari x Dia gets way less attention...) My SO on the other hand - who is not really as deep as I am in the LL rabbit hole - I made him watch Sunshine with me back then and BOY does he hate her guts lmao. I can‘t open up a cute groupshot and gush about my faves on there because he is so busy being nosy about Kanan being there. Yeah, all I wanna say is: thank you, it feels really cathartic to FINALLY see someone else pointing out that this shit was not okay.
I haven't watched sunshine since it came out and I remember thinking that moment between Kanan and Mari was so sweet jkhkkgkh
I feel like everyone took it that way cause that’s clearly how they wrote it to be. It’s just like….. Kanan was so out of line.
They could’ve done what they did in Nijigasaki where their was conflict with what the main purpose of the group should be. Or they could’ve shown Mari being way too emotionally impacted by the group and it being unhealthy for her. A rich girl getting an opportunity to go somewhere else was NOT it.
@@Keygen-0they really said eff the plot just make it gay
I remember a friend of mine gave up on Love Live! Sunshine because of Kanan. He never got back to the series while I continued on.
Totally agree with you! And the worst thing is that after the conflict is "resolved", they pretend that everything is fine and just nothing happened! Until a certain time, I did not understand this, and thought that i'm the only one who saw it. Thank you for your video.
And now [ SPOILER ALERT ] we have MyGO anime and we see that it was quite possible to present the toxic relationship in the group not only more realistic, but also necessary for plot development. After the conflict is resolved, MyGO do not pretend that everything is nice, but continue to work on themselves and through their little hatred for each other we see how they attached and can no longer let each other go.
(english is not my language so i may not correctly express my thougth, but i hope you understand it)
Honestly, these things that Kanan did... only made her more human in my eyes.
Although yes, I wish more depth had been given to the whole matter.
One thing I want to add though, could you please refrain from using the word 'psycho' like this in the future? It can be very hurtful, specially for people that have in the past made the same mistakes as Kanan (in this case), and now actively try to better themselves.
this is just advice, of course
Chills... Honoka still my goat though

(also aren't you the guy who defended me in my LL analysis video?)
@DsnyH Basically, yeah.
@@YawningCircle Wanted to say thank you for that. Really appreciate it
@DsnyH It's no problem, you just didn't deserve the amount of hate you was getting over that video.
It's hard to not acknowledge what you said in this video but I think this is still better than the first season of Niji. Literally just cardboard personalities doing nothing, pursuing nothing, every episode feels the same and is extremely predictable. I recently watched every Love Live there is because I got back into SiF after I left the franchise behind back when Niji started and I just can't finish Niji at all. The first 3 episodes were decent imo, but the whole way they handle solo idols is just so boring and bad. There's not even a reason for them to be solo Idols to begin with. Months past and most of these "idols" do literally nothing. Ayumu for example didn't even have a real concert up to episode 10. Emma's episode wasn't even about her, but Karin. The club gains recognition even though they don't perform anywhere. Like why is Karin on stage of a real festival without ever having performed elsewhere? Did the organizers of the festival just didn't care? Why did only she perform if the club was allowed to sing 3 songs? They could have had 3 different idols have 3 different performances. I really wanted to like the show, but I just can't deal with that empty shell.
Glad I moved on to watch Superstars for the first time after I figured out that I still dislike Niji even if Superstars has some flaws as well but so do Muse and Sunshine I guess.
yeah Niji is just a standard fluff anime for people that are already fans imo. Will never forgive them nerfing Lanzhu and not having villain r3birth and diver diva. Still the writing isn’t particularly egregious to me it’s just.. meh.
The fans need no gaslighting into anything. Love Live is one of the most needlessly toxic fandoms Outside of 'My hero academia' and 'Genshin Impact'
Kotori is lowkey a terrible human being, dont @ me though. She literally does nothing in terms of conflict resolution while generatig nearly all of it and nearly always runs away or sherks responsibility while Honoka and Umi always has to pick up after but I guess Honoka is one in the wrong all the time😂. Its crazy how Kotori didn't speak to her best "friend" for two weeks and didn't actually bother to say goodbye while she was going overseas btw. So not only did she avoid all the flack but Honoka took all of it, had to apologize for some reason and Kotori got off scot free with barely a slap on her wrist, again. In season 2 aswell, notice how Honoka has to take on the brunt of he force from the clubs? But anyway, it i what it is. I still like the show is though.
Also its funny that Eli, the one who was hating on them from day 1, is the one reached to Honoka in some way AT ALL. Like their eader is crying by heeself feeling awful and nobody gives a fuck, some friends😊
No hermano, no te la compro
Claramente hay muchas cosas que no entendiste de la serie xd empezando por el hecho de que la escuela nunca estuvo en riesgo de cerrar hasta que se formó el nuevo Aqours
Todo el video está mal xd
nah I’m still right lol
Honestly, this is one of the worst LL! videos that I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. I could sit here and point out all of the many flaws that this video has, such as your utter lack of media literacy/critical thinking skills, your blatant misinterpretation of the conflict between the 3rd years, how you absolutely butcher the characters (especially Kanan), etc… but I’d be here forever. I was originally going to go about my business and not even bother leaving a comment, but there’s something that you said that just really upset me. I’m referring to how you called Kanan a “psycho”… twice. Not only was this overkill, as at most Kanan was being an inconsiderate friend and a dumbass teenager, who couldn’t properly communicate her feelings… but it’s also ableist and it’s viewed as a derogatory slur that’s used to cause harm to other people. At the end of the day, you can still dislike Kanan and believe that everything you said wasn’t just a bunch of word salad. However, if there’s one thing that you should take away from my comment it’s that you really need to be careful of what comes out of your mouth moving forward.
lol nah
Cook
Kanan is insane.
honestly would’ve loved it if they ran with this. Let girl idols be toxic
Aquors is my favorite
tbh I think their anime was actually the best written overall (so far). Might be why this part stood out so much to me.
Look, I'm sorry to disappoint Aqours's fans, but this anime sucks. It's not even about this single absolutely unrelatable plotline with 3rd years. Every single character in this show is a walking archetype...Well, except of f-in You -- but how can you be surprised, if she is the most popular girl in this group? Literally the only person with some inner conflict in this show. It so bad it wasn't working on me when I was 13 y.o.
srr fo the typos I genuinely from ru**ssia
I don’t think you could disappoint the Aquors fans more than the anime writers already did lololol. They really only made it for people that were already fans of the franchise. There’s absolutely no way I’d sit through it if I didn’t already love the songs and dances. I wish they’d make the drama CDs more accessible to foreigners since they seem to do a lot better of a job of endearing you to the characters without being tied down to the basic anime format. I wish the rest of the groups would get the chibi spinoff that niji has 😞
хорошо!! srry I took 2 semesters of Russian in college and don’t remember a thing lolol
you isnt the most popular in any regard, she's popular but not the most. personally, i think sunshine is the best anime love live has seen so far. i found it really realistic with the way it portrayed friendships and failure. also, one of the major reasons kanan acted the way she did was because mari was hurting herself in order to push the group. kanan was protecting her from harming herself by disbanding og aqours. she knew mari would just shrug it off and say it's fine if kanan told her that was why, so she instead distanced herself and let mari leave to go to the private school for her second year because she knew it would be better for her.
Kanan should actually drown in the sea and become a fish like she wanted to
