I just saw the first video and suggested a shoe as well as a silicone caulk ball, which is what I use. As far as the shoe not working as well it's because it was completely flat so it could only clear the top surface, your stick on the other hand has corners which is how it got in the crevices. Try it with a regular tennis shoe or hiking boot that has tread and it will work just as good as the stick. You can also cut the rubber off of the bottom of the shoe and wrap around a small piece of pvc pipe or small piece of wood. Honestly you could probably keep worn belts off of vehicles or equipment to use as well, all kinds of things around the house that doesn't cost any extra money especially with the ridiculously high price of everything right now.
I was just asking my hubby to buy me an electric sander as I need to sand off 2 dressers, an old desk, book case, and so much more and it is so nice to see how you clean it off.
As usual I learned something new from you today. Who knew you had to clean sandpaper. I just thought you just threw it away when it got “gunned” up. I hope your wife is ok with you messing up her shoe.🤣🤣
Great tip. I’ll be checking out your videos too. I’m sure they’ll help a ton. I’d been using a scraper to remove the gunk on my mouse sander but always wondered if maybe I might’ve been also damaging some of the grit. The rubber definitely won’t. Hope it’ll work on this sander as well.
Omg! I didn't know you could clean sand paper, ohhhh the sand paper I could have saved over the years! Lol So glad I watched this because I will actually be refinishing a dresser and a buffet that have been passed down to me and need some TLC.
Hey, Jamy! Yeah I used to throw sandpaper away too! I am so happy I found out about this. Sandpaper can get expensive after a while. It will not last forever but this little trick will help it to last a little bit. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!
If it is an antique, don't sand the finish off but use a gentle stripper. Watch Thomas Johnson furniture refinishing channel for proper care of valuable furniture. Sanding can destroy the value of antiques.
thanks for doing this. watching your other video about cleaning belts i thought to myself, i got some old skate shoes laying around. glad i saved them now.
Matt this was interesting! All of your videos are interesting tho! I watch all that you put out so that I have insight into what it takes when something needs to be fixed and I can surprise my husband by how “smart” I am.
Great video! I've been using a wire brush and it works pretty well. But I didn't think of the brush removing some of the grit as well. Thanks for sharing!
Have you tried to clean the sandpaper by grinding it at the curved surface? Because the belt is bending the crap in belt should be easier to remove while it has been bent outwards which should reduce the friction for the binding.
good tip. If it doesnt contaminate the paper which it most likely does. Paint wont stick to silicone. It could even lubricate the abrasive and make it slide on metal
It seems like that stick is made out of natural "Crepe" as where as the shoe you used is just some polymere. You can use old Clarks Desert Boots - they have such a sole. But if that stick is only 10 bucks I don't see why to thing even about alternatives
I think the issue IS the shoe, believe it or not.😄 The rubber on the bottom of that style of shoe is kinda like eraser rubber. (As far as firmness) Use the rubber from the bottom of an old hiking boot. But a "good" hiking boot. I say good because a better boot should have a stiffer rubber sole. Just my opinion.
Maybe the rubber was the wrong kind? Maybe a Harder rubber would work better. In any case great video! Also can you tell me what kind of mask you are wearing in this video? I am looking to get a better mask than the bulky one that I use that I cannot breathe in. Thanks!
Felt like I was watching Goldilocks, this one didn't work, this one didn't work, so let's use a log. 😏 But in the end, you gunked it up pretty well. I think I would continue to use the stick and only use the shoe in an emergency. Thanks for sharing.
How did you find the cleaning stick worked on the sandpaper used by hand? I use a sanding pole for drywall and it gets filled up right away. I saw the cleaning stick on Amazon and it's $10 bucks. I doubt they're gonna want it back if I use it. What experience have you had? Thank you.
@@alext8828 intended to buy the cleaning stick. but never have yet, forgot about it actually. your comment reminded me so I'm adding it back to my "to do" list on amazon. I was able to clean sandpaper with an old shoe to a decent degree on my palm sander though.
@@Yhrim70 Yeah, I think I'm just going to go down to the stationary store and get an eraser. I don't think they will charge me $10 for it. You just reminded me I have to get a new base plate for my palm sander. I stupidly let a customer borrow it and now it's wrecked. Thanks for the info.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair I just fixed it to the side of my bench, when it needs cleaning i just brush the sander across it a couple of times. I have 3 sanders I may use on job. mouse, thin belt and thick belt. Cant be screwing them all down
I'm sure i haven't seen this. not in your way of presentation. Entertainment i would call this. Is this a compilation? Here i am. mid of pandemic. be strong friend. a like and a red for you my friend. see see sometimes k!

Haha yeah I promise I got permission to use her shoe. 😁😁. Thanks for watching, Teresa! As always!!
She is ok walking with a limp now..
I recommend using old slippers, I usually find them near beaches that are washed up. Free cleaner
Great tip!
Do slippers=flip flops? 🩴

It's not an antique. It's maybe from the 80's
@@Reese-Dancer well being from the 80's it would be considered Vintage and possibly Retro.
It just converted me! really works that good and i too was a skeptic but not no more. When these go sale i will be getting a few. Thanks

Hello!! Greetings from Cabo San Lucas Mexico !! I love your videos 😃
Thanks so much!
lol try the right hand shoe😂 grate video 👍
WIFE: HONEY, HAVE YOU SEEN MY OTHER SHOE?
FIXER: UM, GEE HONEY, NO I HAVEN'T.
😂😂🤷🏻♂️
🤣🤣🤣 What shoe?
sole doesn't look to bad, just put her shoe back she probably won't notice for a while... when she does, just say _"humm how did you do that honey?"_
Why hasn't this bloke got a million subscribers 🤔 he's very interesting to watch and learn a lot from him
Thanks a lot, Mike! Every comment, like and view helps me to reach that milestone. I really appreciate it!
Mike sharing his videos with your friends will help get the YT algorithm to suggest his tutorials to more prospective subscribers.
Thanks for another informative and interesting video, Fixer!
Thanks, Jim! Happy to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
You can do it actually with silicone tube sealant, if you let or have the content dry

Nice job! I still say get another belt sander and roller skate around your basement. 🤣👍
😂 If I can figure out a way to put a remote trigger on I think we might be in business haha!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair ha ha yes! Maybe Ryobi makes battery operated ones 🤔
Reversing the direction of the sand paper belt is a good idea to get more life/use out of it.
If at a casino, I woulda bet they work the same. Great demonstration. Now we know. Appreciated 👍
😁

I wonder if a piece of old car or truck tire would clean the belt? Might be worth a try.

N95 that should be the mask
Yes I agree N95 should be the mask for doing any work that makes dust like this.
Thank you both for your help. I have purchased the right mask now. Much lighter than The bulky one I was using before and i can breathe in this 1
I guess those sticks work on orbital pads too?

I just tried it with one of my nephews Air Jordans. It worked, but he's not very happy with me for some reason.

Brass brush !
Wait... So you dont actually throw away the sandpaper that is clogged up??
What about old worn out vans shoes?
Maybe some harder rubber ? I wonder how tire rubber would work ... 👍🤠🍻⛏
I use old car Tyre
Time to hit goodwill for some old sneakers....

A piece of tire should last. A proper rubber made to rub against basically a sandpaper for years
Knowing this would have kept me from buying new sand paper :(
Darn - I just threw out a caulking gun tube of silicone that had hardened clear through.
fix your abrasive cleaner to a board. then just clamp the board and use the sander on abrasive stick without having to screw your sander down
