- 1983 NFL DRAFT, FIRST ROUND, 14TH PICK ... "I sure don't want to play for the Buffalo Bills" ... "Please don't pick me" ... "I cried" ... "You've gotta be kidding me" ... ""I'm just grateful to be a part of the Buffalo Bills organization" - You have to say those things... those were lies" ... "I want to retire in Houston" ... "Would you rather be in Houston or Buffalo? I'll stop there."
Kelly would eventually lead the Bills to four straight Super Bowls; later inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame; is currently the only Bill with his number (12) retired; and he lives with his family in the Buffalo area. - Спорт
I still remember the newspaper article on how he didn't want to be in Buffalo. But he sure did great things as he matured. Best bills QB ever.
Watched this whole doc millions of times. Loved it!!!!
Keep in mind the sports reporters don't call it the QB Class of '83. Little did Jim know that he would be in Buffalo but it would take a while ! I have known Jim since 1990. When Jim came here in '86 he learned to love Buffalo, and now it is his home.
If the last 30 seconds does not leave you with a knot in your throat. You are not a fan of the Buffalo Bills. I've been to Buffalo once two years ago (from California) because im lifer, and it was AWESOME! GOD BLESS JIM KELLY! GOD BLESS THE FANS OF BUFFALO ALL OVER THE WORLD! AND GOD BLESS THE BUFFALO BILLS!!!!!
Aeonflux93 amen brother!
Sometimes it just feels good to listen to someone inspire you who knows where Mc Kinley Mall is, Nino's pizza, my two favorite inspired businesses inspired health and the Orchard Park tabernacle and to say thank you for keeping the football season great all four years of my college years at Buffalo State 1989-1994.
OP grad 92!!!! I delivered pizza a few times to the Kelly house (no Jim) via Antonio's! Antonio's shut down because mgmt was skimming off money and there pasta meals weren't so good. Cheap owner but the pizza was banging back in the day!!!! I worked at Fay's Drugs in OP and seen a bunch of players. Steve Tasker's son had to use the bathroom. Bruce Smith picked up prescriptions. He was huge! I still remember the whites of his eyes as he glanced at me. Frank Reich was super nice. Jim Kelly was often out at the bars around 2000. Still lives in Buffalo and we all love the guy!!! I'm in PA for a minute, so boring here.
McKinley now has the sickest skate park. Jim keely is a prick though
Let's get the facts straight about Jim Kelly not wanting to play in Buffalo when he was drafted. Two reasons I remember him saying was #1 = C O L D! #2 = Horrible offensive line at the time! Who in there right mind would want to be taking hard hits while playing in the ANTARTIC????
If he knew he would never get a ring there, I’m sure he would’ve passed
But of course hindsight is 20/20
This is why Josh Allen is so great. He actually wanted to play for Buffalo.
Great post !!!!
I find it amazing that 3 of the greatest QBs of all time where drafted the same year
The Lions had the Bears pick also, they couldve had Jim Kelly with Berry Sanders, imagine that, super team in Detroit
Now his career and blessing make more sense. He would have won a title but chose to delay his orders. Bills fans thank him for the memories. I know he will be proud of how the bills current team will play and have a chance to win the AFC East division in 2014 and 2015. I expect them to do well in 2015 and 2016.
My childhood hero #12 🙌🏻
If I could give 1 team a Super Bowl do over, it’s the 1990 Bills! Kelly should be a Super Bowl winning QB
Buffalo knew they picked a great qb
Greatest without a doubt, but of course unfortunately was wasted by the organization for failing to develop a championship team.
And yes, they should’ve won in 1990 though.
One question to ask: how long did it take for Ralph to fire the secretary?
For those that call Jim Kelly an A-Hole for not going to Buffalo coming out of college FORGET that he started in the USFL and CHOSE to play for the Houston Gamblers. He was offered a lot of money back then and took it. One of the reasons he took the deal was that he was going to start right away. Also, Kelly wasn't too crazy about the cold weather in Buffalo during winter. I can't blame him. He liked the USFL and if it had not folded Kelly would have been there for years.
One last thing, the greatest game he EVER played in was NOT in the NFL. It was in the USFL on February 24, 1985.

Man, I am 28 years old ans I LOVE the usfl.
Simply amazing and fun
Kelly would play whole career for gamblers....
Life long Bills fan here. You have it absolutely wrong. Ferguson was on the decline. Kelly would have been the starter EASILY in 1983 had he not left- the issue was he would've had no one to throw to because other than Jerry Butler, the Bills had jack squat for WR at that time. 1984 and 1985 were two absolutely horrendous years for the Bills, but Kelly coming in and the Bills getting Reed, Thomas, and Bruce Smith- along with many other pieces to the puzzle like Kent Hull, Will Wolford, Shane Conlan, etc.- made us a contender.
Also, that game is great, but kindly look up the shootout he had with the Oilers in 1989 or his six TD performance against the Steelers in 1991.
I watched this 30 for 30 and I've got to credit Jim Kelly for being a stand-up guy and eventually going to Buffalo and not being a BABY like John Elway did in this draft and Eli Manning did years later!! College guys should just keep their mouth shut and report to whatever team drafted them
If the draftee ends up being great, he'll change the culture of the losing organization who drafts him...in addition to Jim Kelly, guys like Michael Jordan, Troy Aikman, Lebron James and others did just that
Buffalo....come because you have to, stay because you want to!
Buffalo... if the weather doesn't kill you, the cancer will.
Jimmer'll tell you himself he should have kept his mouth shut, and regrets some of the foolish things he said. But he wised up. His speaking with candor back then was also part of his charm that followed. Division titles help, sure, and while it is indisputably true that he _came_ to Buffalo for the Money, he _stayed_ in Buffalo because it became his Home. A little redemption song, if you will. Talkin' Proud.
Welll, to be fair, I kinda hated on Elway when he made his decision, too (as I also did for Bebe (Baby) Eric Lindros who refused to play hockey in Quebec). But Elway had good foresight. The Colts franchise was dysfunctional and bolted in the night for Indy. And obviously, the decisions made by Elway and Eli turned out positively for them - they have the championship rings to prove it. Being a Bills fan, I was pissed at Kelly too. He went to Houston and bad-mouthed Buffalo. But he made it work.
When the USFL folded the Buffalo Bills still held Jim Kelly's rights--Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders offered Ralph Wilson (Bills owner) a pile of draft picks and cash for the rights to Kelly---In among the few things Ralph Wilson ever did right he refused
I'm just thankful Pittsburgh didn't draft him otherwise Kelly would've been doing damage for his hometown team.
@ERIC MOULDS
I always wondered about this - why didn't the Pats draft Dan Marino? What was the rationale behind drafting Tony Eason? Tony Eason wasn't all bad - he had a more accurate arm than Steve Grogan and better instincts, but like John Hannah said, he lacked guts and was afraid of being hit. I think if the Pats had drafted Marino, and paired his passing game with the awesome defense and running game they had, they definitely would have had a shot of winning the Super Bowl in the 1980s.
Bournetolive Alot of teams did not want to draft Marino because of rumors of him drinking and doing drugs (all not proven) and teams including the pats did not want that kind of attention
It would have been weird if the Bills drafted Dan Marino.
Jim grew up in the same Pittsburgh blue collar area as Marino. As did Joe Montana. Kelly only went to Miami cause they offered him a scholarship.
Akhibrass joe Namath as well
And John Unitas!
Awww, shit, just heard the terrible news that JK has cancer in his jaw, and will have surgery tomorrow. Get well soon Jimmer!
It would've probably made more sense if we got Marino cus he's blue collar and Jim is from Miami lol
RuffBuff716 Jim is from the Pittsburgh area
"made it look a lot better to jim kelly, now, its home" nah he stilll hates it there
jon john He lives in the Buffalo area and is Buffalo's "ambassador" - so, I doubt he hates it there.
Hates it there? You're clueless, couldn't be more wrong.
You are an ignoramus.
would have been weird if bills got marino and phins go Kelly...
Kelly shouldve been drafted by the Lions, who had the 13th pick,
Couldve been Kelly and Sanders, a dynasty from the most saddest franchisevin history
Why does he have an Irish accent if he is from Pittsburgh lol
+Capital That is not what the Irish sound like.
This organization completely *WASTED* him, hence why he never got a ring.
Yes I know in a couple of those Super Bowls, he didn’t play his best but still.
