I wish you would've talked about coil mattresses, not just hybrid. And how foam mattresses tend to sag and develop depressions after several months or years.

I make futons for a living. They are for the most part made of pure cotton. I have many customers buying futons after having terrible experiences with foam and latex mattresses: Back pain, jiggling with latex, over heating, sinking in and cratering with the foam, losing firmness and becoming squishy in just a couple of months, inability to move a latex mattress because it’s too heavy and there is more. Many customers and report back that the futon has healed their chronic back pain in just a couple of weeks. Pain they’ve had for years. Futons don’t heat up and cook you. They stay cool, especially when they have some natural wool on the outside layer, they regulate your temperature perfectly. They get firmer over time rather than sink in so they work the opposite of regular mattresses. The firm support keeps the spine aligned and eliminates back pain. A good futon lasts many years and they cost hundreds less than these other mattresses you talked about here. Also, you can them with all organic materials making them chemical free and that is a major health benefit compared to these foam mattresses. Foam mattresses are 100% chemicals and there is off gassing along with synthetic fabric covering.
My new favorite, the one that I sleep on, is a firm futon with a two inch thick soft organic latex topper. This combination is a dream come true. Total pressure relief along with solid spinal support, no caving, only slightly warmer and no jiggly movement when turning over. Organic and much less expensive than the others.

I've thought about a wool futon but not sure how I'd feel about it without trying it, since they understandably never allow returns. I'm' lightweight and so everything feels too firm for me. The best seems to be either laying in the grass outside- at least on my back. I am a combo back and side sleeper- I can't believe people only sleep in one position and on one side yet! I'm like a rotisserie chicken. The only thing w a futon too is no springiness for sex, but benefit of no movement during sleep felt by partner either. Firmer over time does not sound so appealing though. I guess it compacts. Also cotton, unlike latex, is prone to dust mites, how do you deal with that?

Futons were the trend in the 90's. I hated, loathed and despised my futon and I'm in the majority. It's essentially a sack of cotton. I sleep on latex now, it's only a fraction the weight of futon! No bounce. Never would i recommend one.

Here are a couple tips I learned from an old mattress salesman the last time I bought a bed:
Buy a mattress that feels “just a bit too firm”, then buy a foam mattress topper for it. This is basically a cheaper way of making a hybrid mattress. To quote the salesman: “You can always make a firm mattress softer, but you can’t make a too-soft mattress firmer.”
An added advantage is that a firm mattress will hold its' shape longer than a soft one, so it should last longer. The extra cushion provided by the foam topper can help the mattress last even longer, and as a bonus you can buy a new topper when necessary to make the mattress last even longer still.

Foam mattress has relieved so many of my aches and pains! Casper mattress has a latex-like foam over the memory foam for less heat retention, and a more supportive foam under the memory foam. The information on the hybrid mattress was extremely helpful. We live in a cold climate now, but if we moved back to Florida we would probably need to consider a hybrid mattress for cooler sleep. Thanks for the great video!

I am a very light weight side sleeper. My heaviest weight is 115 but I'm currently 107. My lightest weight would probably be 100lbs. I bought a foam mattress from a popular brand and it feels great with the bare mattress but as soon as I add mattress protector and sheets it feels as stiff as a board. After laying on my side for just 15 or 20 minutes my arm is asleep and there's no way I can spend 8 hours like that. I put my old memory foam topper on it and now I can finally sleep half the night but I wake up overheating at 3am every night. I'm at a loss of what to do at this point. My old mattress was an Ikea foam mattress that was too firm, hence the topper again.

Thank you. Is my Linenspa hybrid I just got relatively safe since the memory foam is Centi-Pur? I'm a side sleeper and 70 yo. How can I avoid memory foam if I want softness? That's why I can't get a strictly spring mattress right?

  • @KutWrite

My foam-topped bed's memory foam got Altzheimer's. The valley in the middle made side-sleep tough.
I'm very happy now with my coil mattress with an open-cell top. I have thin pillows - the cheapest ones from Walmart. I only use the pillow while on my side. When I take a turn on my back, I use no pillow. I sleep well and shoulder and lower-back pain is gone.
I didn't notice this 'til I had the mattress, but the top pad is slightly wider than the coils. This gives me good support all the way to the edge. I believe the brand is either Diamond, or their lower-end brand, Pace.

Interesting, I've always been a right sided sleeper until the last few months I get this urge at times to turn left. I also find, that often when I do, I can hear my heart beat. Do you have any idea if this can be related to my ascending aortic aneurism? I intend to ask heart doc at next visit.

I have to disagree about the latex allergy issue. I had a horrible reaction to a bed that used latex. I found out the hard way! The other thing that makes a big difference is how someone's body size weight can have a huge difference in the feel of the mattress as far temperature and pressure relief. I am a very lightweight side sleeper and finding the right mattress has been rough. I currently on my 3rd trial of a mattress and so far have had issues with all 3!

What if you can't afford to buy a new mattress? Is an egg crate mattress topper ok? I've been researching this, but not sure.

What you didn’t mention air beds, the best thing I’ve ever found went thru many types of mattresses the adjustable air bed with standard foam on top. Not to mention a name brand which could be the only ones doing this is Sleep Number, I’m really surprised you didn’t mention it.

We are looking at buying 2 single mattresses to support my husband's sleep from being disturbed by me. Have you other shopping tips that may help me to buy the best product to help to sleep better?
