    What makes a marriage work? What are your favorite movie marriages?
    Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are doing another round of top movie marriages and sharing what makes these movie marriages thrive. They take a look at five great marriages: Pongo and Perdita from 101 Dalmatians, Barbara and Adam from Beetlejuice, Guido and Dora from Life is Beautiful, Elinor and Fergus from Brave, and Rick and Evie from The Mummy. They discuss themes such as love languages, problem solving, and loyalty. Look out for our honorable mentions and tell us your favorite movie marriages in the comments below!

    This episode was filmed during the Writer’s Strike.
    According to SAG-Aftra, independent film reviewers are welcome to discuss movies that have already come out. These films were produced under previous contracts and wouldn’t be affected by any changes resulting from the strike.
    Any praise for the films we discuss is praise for the writers, actors, directors, and so many other artists and craftspeople who made them. Without their labor, we wouldn’t be able to watch our favorite films together. Without their labor, our show wouldn’t be as impactful. Without their labor, our show wouldn’t exist.

      I always thought Anuk su na moon was done dirty - she's always the martyr. The pharaoh would've killed Imhotep for touching her, so they kill him. Then, takes the rap and kills herself so he can get away. She spent thousands of years in Egyptian rave hell while he chooses to save a book instead of her and she dies again. She gets reincarnated, finds him, and he reunites her soul with her body. She's only alive again a few days before he wants her to sacrifice for him again.

      And it comes when she's giving him a straight up "Give me a f**king break" look too!
      It's perfect because anyone who's ever loved a person who could/should be voiced by Billy Connolly has 100% made that face a million times and he effortlessly leans into it in order to get her to try something that'll be good for her.
      It may play into stereotypes and all but that's fine. Some people completely fit them, especially in a story about being stuck between one's true self and tradition/expectations.

      I've never watched that scene and thought Imhotep was being selfish so much as he would have run through stalactites (they hold "tite" to the ceiling) for her. Everything he did in both movies was for the sake of being with her and giving her the world. When she wouldn't for him, he knew that she didn't love him as much as he loved her and it wrecked him.

She wasn't really comfortable with him marching into a deadly peril being de-powered. Anksunamun wasn't afraid to test their relationship, the woman went through hell and beyond, she took her own life without a hesitation. I think that her point of view here is usually overlooked. I also love that when he stumbles when giving some speeches, like addressing everyone at the beginning of the gathering about the presentation of the suitors, she takes over gracefully and he lets her do most of the talking which wouldn’t be normal during that time. the thing about Rick and Evie is that it breaks the stereotype of action movies. Everyone knows that, even though the hero gets the girl and rides off into the sunset with her at the end - the next action movie in the series will have him conveniently single again. Because 'Real Heroes' aren't tied down by baby diapers and winter proofing the house and actually having to mature the way being in a long term relationship requires you to have to. Movie writers/directors assume that once you 'settle down' that's the end of your ability to have adventures. They all want their 'here's looking at you kid' moment because Obviously the public want their heroes single to imprint upon. Especially during the time Mummy 2 came out, that was so standard that anything that wasn't that way was a HUGE shake up. So we got this movie where the hero WAS changing diapers (or had) and winter proofing the house, etc and he was DELIGHTED and DEEPLY COMMITTED to doing that. And yet it wasn't a joke. He wasn't a joke. His marriage wasn't a punchline about how horrible being tied down was. Rick loved being married with a kid and he was STILL the coolest action hero who got to do adventures and look cool while also respecting and adoring his wife and it was all so sincere. The entire movie treated their marriage sincerely instead of winking and nudging the audience over it. It took audience investment to a huge another level because it was safe for us to invest that kind of emotion because the movie was already investing it as well. Rick and Evie's relationship carries the second movie and gives it all the depth of emotion a 'one and done' hero can't. We got a hero that loved being married and still got to be a hero and, especially back then, it was such a huge thing. No wonder we all fell in love.

    The thing that makes me incredibly happy about Fergus and Eleanor's relationship (at least from what we see in the movie) is that NOT ONCE does he say to Eleanor "hey do you want me to talk to Merida?"
    He recognized that while he can help workshop HOW Eleanor can relay her feelings to Merida (and that Merida would probably be a lot more open to receiving the criticism from Fergus) he CANT be the one to attempt to repair the relationship; that is something they have to do for themselves.

There is such deep loyalty and support and romance and these two can’t keep their hands off each other. I’m honestly surprised they only ever had one child. With the way they look at one another there should have been at minimum 6 children in that family. I aspire to be that in love and that devoted 10, 20, 30 years in, etc.

      I especially love when she gets drunk, and say "I will kiss you" just to fall asleep, he is obviously disappointed, but he kisses the air; he doesn't try to kiss her. She was willing, she was very clear about it, but she was passed out, so that was a no-go. He totally respects her as a person; perfect anti-rape culture scene. And thorough the second movie, it's very clear they have learned from each others; none think they are better than the other, that they know better. They recognize each other's strengths, respect them, and borrow what they can to be stronger individuals, and a stronger couple.

      Absolutely. Most movie 'relationships' are shallow, based on appearance more than anything else. How can we teach children that marriages are love, and that it is actually work to keep them up.
      I learned, over the course of a year, that when I feel jealous, it's because I'm not getting enough touch. Now I just go over and play-demand physical affection. Hugs, cheek caressing, gentle kisses on the forehead. Physical intimacy, but not necessarily anything sexual. It's amazing how good I feel after holding hands and looking into his eyes.
      Racing into the bedroom and having L shaped blankets is nice, but I'll take the caress on the cheek every day.
      And I never feel jealous anymore.

      I think Brave suffered from changing directors/base storytellers midway through. The first was Brenda Chapman who had co-directected Prince of Egypt and was very focused on the emotional beats of the story. She came up with the whole mother daughter relationship as a part of the story (one of the best parts), based on her own relationship with her daughter. Disney-Pixar replaced her with another dude due to differences in vision/wanting more action, so you have a completely different style mixed in that can be jarring. I believe first director was upset with how high handed Pixar was about it,and where they took story

    I just want to mention something I was always impressed with regarding the Rick/Evie and Imhotep/Anck-Su-Namun scene because it wasn't quite mentioned in the video. When Anck-Su-Namun runs from Imhotep, his entire reality narrative is shattered. Since his whole identity and motivation hinges on their perfect and eternal love, when he realizes that it never really existed he no longer needs to continue with his goals. Then in a brilliant moment of writing and acting right before he lets himself go, he looks at Rick/Evie and witnesses their incredible relationship as the one he thought he had with Anck-Su-Namun and... smiles! That small smirk is an amazing moment of recognition and validation.
    One final observation and maybe I'm imagining this, but there also a moment as Rick/Evie look back at Imhotep struggling on the abyss recently abandoned and their faces soften from fear and anger to a sort of empathetic pity. Even after everything that has happened, they can still recognize his moment of pure suffering from being abandoned by the supposed love of his life. This is also an amazing moment of recognition and validation from our heroes. The mirroring between every aspect in this scene is amazing.

    The reason for the pencil lines in 101 Dalmations (also Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood and Jungle Book) was because after Sleeping Beauty the animation department basically got told to find a way to save money or they'd be shut down, and so they ended up using Xerox to allow them to transfer their drawings directly to animation cels, bypassing the expensive inking process and giving that era of movies its distinctive look.
    It was a cost-cutting measure, basically, but one that definitely paid off.

    • @dietotaku
      @dietotaku 8 місяців тому +18

      a big part of the reason why that era of disney animation has that sketchy look to it is that so much of the movements were rotoscoped from live footage. it's also why many scenes were "re-skinned" and reused in subsequent movies, like baloo dancing in the jungle book getting recycled for robin hood.

    • @JessAnderson1988
      @JessAnderson1988 8 місяців тому +16

      @@dietotaku That is not why there is a sketchy look. Rotoscoping has nothing to do with the look of this film. Rotoscoping is tracing live action footage. The Disney artists used live action footage as reference for this film (and the films that came after and before it), but they were never directly tracing and copying live action footage of characters into their drawings. The sketchy style of this film came from the fact that Sleeping Beauty did not do well upon its release, so in order to save money from the huge box office loss, the inking section of the Ink & Paint department was closed down, and the technique of using a Xerox machine to transfer cleaned up animation drawings from paper to cell was developed instead. Xerox is the only way this film could have been made at the time, due to the incredible number of spotted dogs on screen. And so because Xerox was being used to transfer drawings to cells, the art director also decided to continue that sketchy look into the design of the backgrounds as well, for a consistent design across the entire film.
      101 Dalmations was thankfully a box office success, and so the Xerox technique continued into the 60's, 70's and 80's. And as you had mentioned, some animation was re-used in several films during this time, which also is unrelated to rotoscoping (in these cases, the animators would use the original drawings from a previous film as heavy reference in regard to timing & movement when creating new animation for a new film). Eventually they were able to update the Xerox to use brown lines instead of just black. Colored lines similar to what you see in films made before 101 Dalmations did not return to Disney animation until the invention of CAPS (Computer Animation Production System, which was a computer software that allowed artists to digitally ink & paint animation drawings. This technique was first used as a test in a single shot of The Little Mermaid, and then used for entire films starting with Rescuers Down Under. CAPS was used through the Renaissance & Post Renaissance until the studio switched to 3D animated films in the mid 2000's.

    • @QueenMadradena
      @QueenMadradena 7 місяців тому +8

      I came for this comment :)
      Just to add some more trivia: Sleeping Beauty was the one that Disney considered THE masterpiece, but it actually brought the company to the verge of bankruptcy because re-drawing the lines of the motion-drawings with colorful ink on every singular frame meant a huge a staff. Then as I remember, Disney got sick and was not available, and at the same time a new technology appeared: xerox! And the director of 101 Dalmatians used xerox to transfer the motion drawings to the actual frames - this is why it's possible to see the pencil lines, it's the most authentic to what the original drawers created as opposed the drawings in Sleeping Beauty where the color-lining artists over-drew the originals which sometimes lost some quality. The next film they were able to use the color-lining was Beauty and the Beast but there it was done by computer technology.
      The director said many-many years later that Disney never forgave him for 101 Dalmatians.
      I do adore the cartoon, and also the original novel which is very different, but so wholesome. And it has a sequel! I think I read both 100 times when I was a kid. :)

    FINALLY someone is acknowledging how FANTASTIC Adam and Barbara Maitland are! They're so in love with themselves, their life (and afterlife) and they're such good parents to Lydia, I'm glad they're finally getting some praise for it!

    Please do Sally and Ned aka the Mayor from Horton Hears a Who. I love how supportive she is, especially when he appears to be losing it and is unscrewing all the breakable stuff in their house

    I’m a weird person so I have many theories on healthy relationships. I’ve boiled them down to three really really broad pillars:
    1. You enjoy each others company
    2. You support each other
    3. You keep the romance alive
    I love it when I get to see those things in a relationship.

      Enjoying each other's company is such an underrated trait in a healthy relationship. No one will make a sweeping Hollywood epic about two people who just like hanging out together, but it makes a huge difference in the long haul. This was one of the early "green flags" when I started dating my husband that this was something to hold onto.

      "You keep the romance alive" - many couples today do not do this. instead of working hard to keep loving their partner... they just move on to someone else. Relationship's in today's society is in decay because people had been led to believe love is just suppose to be there. If its not there anymore, you find someone else, like a disposable easily replaced thing. For me love is like a flame, the more the pair keep working to keep it burning, the more it last. Letting it be by itself will eventually put it out.

      4. Build something up together. It could be raising a kid, it could be something else. But you have do work together towards a common achievement.

      @@jeebanjeeban87 This is a slippery slope. Love is not just an attraction/lust/passion - those eventually fizzle away, but love shouldn't. At least that's my experience. In my previous relationship, I had to work hard just to keep "loving" my ex, as you say. In my current marriage, however, it feels like I love my husband more and more each day, without putting any conscious effort in. Because I love him, in the true sense of that word; I love him for who he is, he's someone I deeply adore and want to be with, and so as long as he is himself, that love will never fade away. If I didn't "dispose of my easily replaceable" ex, I wouldn't have met my husband, and instead would be stuck in my horrible past relationship to this day. A terrifying thought. (Now that is not to say that love alone is enough for a relationship to be happy and healthy, that's definitely not the case.)

    Hiccup and Astrid I know they weren't married until the end of the 3rd HTTYD but Astrid is always there to support and encourage Hiccup when he doubts himself and Hiccup is fully aware of her ability to be a warrior and doesn't hold her back and reassures her through the films and the show RTTE that there will always be a Hiccup and an Astrid

      Also a huge fan of Hiccup and Astrid. Did you feel that perhaps in the 3rd movie it felt a bit like they hadn't moved forward from the second? I was hoping they'd be married in that one and we'd get to see them navigate marriage while doing dragon stuff.

    I was 7 yrs old when The Mummy came out and still one of my favorite movies. I always wished to have a relationship like Rick and Eve had in the film. Still searching but man I just love, love this duo and keeps me coming back to binge watching 1 and 2.
