Why do I feel like Alan just vented the weight of the world off his chest!?! Haha. In all seriousness, that was hilarious! I now want to know what other movies Alan needs to rant about, because if its so bad that ALAN (one of the most compassionate people and film makers out there) NEEDS TO VENT...that movie messed up BIG TIME!
Okay, While you were sleeping is my favorite movie. I love it! It’s a daily quote movie in our family haha “Nice uhh…. Sweater.” In sweater weather haha of course. ❤😂

The fact that the teacher in Never Been Kissed thinks she's a minor for most of the movie should put it at the bottom of the list for that reason alone
THIS. I was just thinking the same thing. At least Pretty Woman is two informed, consenting adults. NBK is a woman lying about her identity and a man attracted to his minor female student. Hard. Pass.
As a teen, I loved NBK, but watching it in my late 30s after copious growth and therapy really opened my eyes. That movie is awful realistically and sets a bad message to young women.
It’s even funnier for me because I just recently watched V for Vendetta, so it’s hilarious seeing the reference so soon after watching it. But yes, 10/10 amazing editing and brilliant joke
In Clueless, Josh has this talk with Cher, after the stressed lawyer scolds her and says she’s destroyed her father’s case. What Josh says there, shows how Josh sees her good heart, he sees how she tries to take care of everyone. It’s not just that she’s cute, he sees her good core.
Agreed. She is attractive sure, but the arc of the movie shows Josh wouldn't fall for just that. And I think it's implied that he actually doesn't have a problem getting dates if he feels like it (of course looking like Paul Rudd certainly doesn't hurt XD).
He also sees her taking on helping others in her way like the makeover and the food/stuff drive. I don't think he realizes he helps influence those changes but he ends up in situations where he gets to see her grow and appreciates her efforts. ❤
Yes. I loved how he stood up for her in that scene because he knew she didn’t mean anything malicious by it and he pointed out if he really cared about these files, the lawyer should have paid close attention. Agreed. He did see how much she cared about people and if she cares about someone or something, she puts her mind to it.
Jono here. We review all the edits along the way and give them final approval. We had no idea that was coming. It was phenomenal. Our editors are the absolute best.
I'm German and I remember my mum ranting about Hollywood romcoms one day back in the 90ies when I was a teenager. She sat me down and said: "Americans might believe this is what love is about, but here in Germany actually falling in love isn't the story and isn't the complicated part, the story starts at the wedding and is nothing like those films. It's about accepting that your partner isn't perfect and about respecting yourself and each other as people. This stuff is like food from MC Donald's and true love is like grandma's roast pork with red cabbage and dumplings."😂
And btw I’m American and think normal people agree with your mum. It’s a shame that other countries view Americans through the lens of entertainment, which is always stilted toward some story goal and rarely realistic. I have a lot of Asian friends who think this about our American family culture and I keep telling them that what they see on TV isn’t how we really are (for the most part)… for instance, me and my siblings take care of our aging parents and they are usually shocked.
@@Liberteabelle yes unfortunately Hollywood promotes very negative stereotypes about the USA. But don't worry, there's negative stereotypes about every country. 😁
I suspect the reason for the (lingering) darkness in the Pretty Woman script is that it wasn’t meant to be a romantic comedy to begin with. I also don’t see their relationship quite as one-sided. On paper Vivienne is the one that needs saving, but really she isn’t broken. He is. She lives in bad circumstances, yes, but Edward can’t hold down a relationship, does a horrible job, has all the money in the world, but no idea how to enjoy it… The nastiness of the fight shows the difference between them quite well. She is a lot more mature in many ways. And she’s absolutely willing to walk away until he digs into his feelings and gives her a proper apology. In the end, too, he tries to “buy” her to stay in his life, but it’s not what she wants, so she walks away. He has to get over himself to deserve her. Really it’s a story of personal growth as well.
Very good analysis! I was a young adult when Pretty woman came out and heard years later that Vivienne was supposed to die at the end, but they switched it up.
That's so true. She did have a hurtful past but she is mostly healed while he is currently leading with multiple problems. She is more mature than him in most cases because she knows how to be strong and true to herself while being treated badly by most ppl. BTW your comment made want to do a video analysis of this movie. 😂
Thank you! I am shocked that they ranked that one at the bottom. I mean, they at least are pretty honest with each other. They know truths about each other that they hide from others and being with each other let’s them be more honest with even themselves. Three of the others are based on pure lies! In two of them, they know so little about the other person, it’s crazy!!
I adore While You Were Sleeping; it's my very favorite rom com. Admittedly I have grown to like rom coms less as I've gotten older, but the key to a good rom com is ALWAYS a great supporting cast. The family in While You Were Sleeping makes the movie.
Thanks so much for your "Never Been Kissed" rant, Alan! Teacher/Student relationships always make me uneasy, especially if they're romanticised. It doesn't matter if Sam and Josie are both adults around the same age, he THOUGHT that she was his underage student for all the time he knew her, meaning that their entire relationship was based on a lie. He also had a girlfriend, and I don't think that it was mentioned if they'd broken up or not. Sam actually compliments Josie at one point, then adds, "Actually, I shouldn't say that, BECAUSE I'm your teacher."
@@wengeltesema8724The uncomfortable truth is that he had the hots for what he thought was a teen and I don't know how old he's suppose to be in the movie, but I can tell you from experience that this is relatively common... Not defending, just saying. However the point of it in the end is that she isn't a teen, she is an adult, and that makes it alright. But it say " _it's all based on a lie!_ ", that's stupid. So what, you like cheese but your partner doesn't, yet lies about it and now your relationship isin jeopardy for a cheese? Do you honestly believe that?
@@Zeithri Who bases their whole relationship on cheese? Stupid analogy The whole foundation of their relationship was the idea that she was underage and he was her teacher If thats a lie then the foundation is damaged
Was just watching his son in “Lessons in Chemistry”. He was fantastic. But his VOICE and mannerisms. I knew he was his son before I knew he was his son.
The funny thing for me is I always assumed that line meant not a romantic kiss... Like she's kissed her brother and parents, etc, or maybe kissed a boy when they (were both, really) in grade 3... but that's not a *real* kiss.
Clueless is a delightful film, but While You Were Sleeping is my ultimate feel good movie. All of the characters are well written and well casted, but it is also wonderfully quotable. Team Jon all the way!
We do see Josh fall in love with Cher slowly, it's just subtle!! First, the car scene with Josh, Cher, and Josh's at the time girlfriend is the first sign that Josh finds her charming/sees her hidden intelligence. Also, the more Cher grows and begins to genuinely care about other people and put their needs first, Josh is the first to take notice and he begins to fall in love with her. He goes from calling her out on her crap to seeing how much she's changed from an annoying sister figure to a generous, loving and genuinely selfless young woman. He only starts to like her when she starts to mature and better herself, "makeover her soul" if you will. Also it's addressed in the movie that Cher isn't interested in anything below the equator until she KNOWS he's the right one, and even toward the end when we see they're together, she says "gosh I'm only 16!" so she's very aware of her age and willing to take it very slow until she's a consenting adult. :)
@nonyabidness5708 I think that part is because it's an Emma spinoff, where everyone is related basically haha. They do make it very clear that Cher's dad and Josh's mom weren't married for very long and haven't been together for YEARS to try and soften that ick. EX stepbrother😅
Josh totally falls in love with her! My favourite scene is where they’re in the car with his pretentious college girlfriend, and Cher actually corrects her on Shakespeare. The look on Paul Rudd’s face at that moment, when he realizes Cher is actually smart, is my fave.
And Alan's rant about his Drew Barrymore hate finally being vindicated by her scabbing during the strikes is just awesome. He got a lot off his chest here 😂
My sister thinks i hate love because i get so aggravated at the depictions of romance in media. Fighting until you realize oh no its love is NOT LOVE. A grand gesture is NOT LOVE. And neither is most of what we saw on TV, so when i see one now thats good and makes me happy, it feels so rare and sooo good.
She’d probably hate me since I am actually romance repulsed. My mom also thought I hated love because I found the romcoms she watched BORING and I kept calling the characters idiots. It’ll why do so many romcoms have the “idiot plot”? I also never had the “boy crazy” phase growing up and had no context for it so I just thought my classmates were having some collective mental breakdown. And whenever adults would do the “so who do you wanna marry and have babies with?” Question I actually would dry heave. Weird that they never asked the boys that…why is there so much stigma against women having no interest in romance. It it’s perfectly fine for men? Just get off my case Aphrodite! I’m outside your jurisdiction!
Growing up I also hated most of the romance in media which my parents always ridiculed and said is unreasonable reaction. Having grown up and seeing that I was always right to feel icky about those - that feels good to realize. And yeah, seeing the healthy relationships depictions in media more and more is just heartwarming!
Too many times the Grand Gesture is used as a love bomb in manipulative relationships. Is it always that? Of course not! But is it an elevation of an already caring respectful relationship or is it used as a replacement for same?
I think I've only once seen a character that does grand gestures and it comes of as actual love. That would be Jack from This is Us. And it only works because he tries his best to do the little things to be a good husband and father too. And then tries to improve on himself to not cock it up like that again.
Whoever edits your videos deserves a raise from this video alone cause the whole Never Been Kissed segment was outstanding, from the cancelled gag to the entire V For Vendetta bit it is hilarious and that is all done in the edit edit: editors name is David Sant, fantastic job here
The editing of this video is well above average. Excellent comedic timing. Hilarious bits without going over the top. Phenomenal work to you editor(s)!
The first time my husband went out of town I missed him so much I bought French kiss, Dirty Dancing and Dances with Wolves. He passed recently and I miss him in every way people show love. In everyday moments. He taught me a lot and is why I have love for anything at all. He is my best friend and I miss him.
I hope to experience that with someone one day. You must really be hurting, I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like he had excellent taste in movies. I'll bet nobody ever put his baby in the corner either
It is not a 1990s Romcom, but I would love to see the two of you address "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) as how relationships develop, how our romantic history impacts our current relationship, and whether or not it is true that men and women can't be friends because the sex thing gets in the way. I will be upfront that I have used this film in an undergrad sociology class about Marriage and Family. Just would love Jonathan's take on Harry and Sally's relationship and Alan's on the filmmaking.
LOVE that film! Lots of topics to cover on Rob Reiner’s directing genius and the writing and complexity of platonic and romantic relationships both good and bad, the clips of how other couples met and ended up together! Oh my gosh! That would be amazing!!!
While You Were Sleeping is in my top 10 movies. When I was a hopeless romantic teenager/YA desperate for a large family holiday with my future spouse, I'd cry at the Christmas scene where she's just watching the entire family and you can tell it's what she's never had but always longed for. I still remember the first family Christmas with my husband, feeling similarly to Lucy in that scene, just relishing the chaos and love with a full heart 🥹
I loved While you were sleeping as a kid, because Bill Pullman. But as an adult I love it even more, because I’ve lost my parents pretty early and I totally get her not just falling in love with Bill Pullman, but also falling in love with his family and being a part of a family again. Makes me cry almost every time 🥲
I love Bill Pullman too, and his entire family are wonderful. My son and I love the Christmas present scene with the sister and her gloves. So sweet! And… I don’t drink any more; I don’t drink any less either!
I think Meg Ryan’s “nice to meet you” in the elevator implies that they don’t run off into the sunset and instead choose to start seeing each other like any other newly found relationship. That’s actually one of my favorite things about sleepless in Seattle - it would’ve been easy to do some big romantic kiss like every other movie. Instead they replaced it with smiles and awkward staring and a sweet “nice to meet you” to tie it off. Perfect ending and dare I say pretty realistic if we get past all the other coincidences earlier in the movie. Now dissect French kiss! It’s my favorite Meg Ryan movie and one of the best movies for a love that grows naturally over the course of the film to where when they finally get together, it makes perfect sense. It’s one of those movies that still gives me butterflies and the acting is unbelievable.
Yes, I though that too. It seemed like he was asking her to go somewhere so they could start getting to know each other, and in the process they both felt the spark when their hands touched. We the audience know that it will all work out because we know how compatible they are (and we're supposed to see them as meant to be) but the characters aren't declaring lifelong love yet. Also it's never clear if she's "leaving her life behind" like the speaker in this video implied, it's left unanswered exactly how they work the distance out - but we are just supposed to have faith they will, because we know they are fated to be together.
yall are majorly missing the point, yes its great that the ending isnt framed like theyre instantly in love and dating. but the problem is the woman STALKED HIM. If this was about a man who hears a womans voice and stalks her all the way to her town and the movie implies thats normal and okay and healthy and theyre GOING to end up together, i would really hope at least then you would realize how absolutely bonkers and scary that is. Stalking is not a healthy start to a relationship, people that resort to stalking usually dont see their target as an equal human being that they want a healthy strong relationship with, but rather an object to admire and to own. THAT IS NOT OKAY. A WOMAN STALKING A MAN IS NOT ROMANTIC.
You do know Clueless is an adaptation of Emma by Jane Austen, right? When you learn about the production it's the latest pull to have this attached to your heart forever
Actually you got it spot on with Clueless being so like Emma - because it actually is Emma! Clueless was actually a reworking of Emma for modern audiences. This was right around the 90s resurgence of Austen being popular thanks to the success of the BBC version Pride and Prejudice. That's why you feel the narrative beat-for-beats match. Cher is Emma, Josh is Mr Knightley, Tai is Harriet Smith, Elton is Mr Elton and Christian is Frank Churchill. Those are the direct changeovers, other characters were blended to make singular characters to trim the story down but yeah, that's why you guys hit it on the head noticing the Emma similarities 😊💜
Also Pretty Woman is "Pygmalion" / "My Fair Lady"... which is another reason Pretty Woman a "classic" but also a big part of why he's so terrible... because Henry Higgins is terrible...
The editing on this video was top tier. Absolutely brilliant. Also, really cathartic. It came out when I was still a kid and I LOVED it. I thought the teacher was so cute and I rewatched the film all the time. Now, as an adult, I can’t believe people thought any of that okay. It wasn’t just her and the teacher! It was also her with Guy, and her brother with the gymnast. Wtaf was this movie.
“There’s a difference between fundamentally changing who you are, and growing into a version of you that was always in there” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Jonno hitting the nail right on the head once again. Thank you, that was perfect and so full of clarity.
Josh definitely sees Cher for more than others do. When Cher’s father’s associate attorney calls her a moron for filing something “incorrectly” (because he gave a professional lawyer task, that he didn’t want to do, to an unqualified 16-year-old girl), Josh immediately responds with “she’s *not* a moron” Throughout the movie he discovers that she’s charming, charismatic, and has a strong way with words (those take intelligence), but he knows the world only sees her as a dumb blonde.
I always felt that he was able to relax and be himself around her, which he doesn't seem to do with anyone else, she makes him feel safe, valued and respected.
while you were sleeping is simply the best, for all the reasons. that scene in the church when she finally comes clean with all of them, her raw honesty and vulnerability, their grace and humor, just gets me every time, and i start ugly blubbing all over the place. so incredibly well acted all around. one of my top 10 rainy day feel-good movies 💗
Agreed. Saw this in college with some friends. My one friend came out bawling, complaining that she'd seen Schindler's List and hadn't shed a tear. Love this movie. One of my favorites.
Now, please do 5 more: Notting Hill, Runaway Bride (because we need a Gere/Roberts rematch), Blast From the Past, Green Card & 10 Things I Hate About You.
I found this channel (and this specific video) four months after I separated from my ex-husband who was incredibly abusive and a narcissist. I absolutely love my therapist! But I have also learned so much more about myself and my relationships just from simply watching these videos in my free time. I'm so thankful for CinemaTherapy and all the hard work you guys put into this channel. I think more people should watch these videos! Even if you don't specifically "need" therapy, there is still a lot that can be learned. And the fact that movies are being analyzed is so brilliant!
Oh no!! I just looked her up in December after watching “While You Were Sleeping”. I recognized her voice as the mom from “Mary Poppins” and wanted to confirm, and was glad to find she was still alive. 100 is a good long go of things.
I was about to get upset. I grew up watching her. Then he mentioned the writers strike and I remembered “oh yeah, she crossed the picket line. Okay Alan, go off.”
I will say, Bill Pullman's character in Sleepless in Seattle, Walter, might be one of my favorite parts about the movie. Sure, Annie and Walter basically don't have any romantic chemistry or passion in the movie, reading more as friends than future wife and husband, so they're clearly not supposed to be right for each other even though they're engaged, at least in movie-language... But I appreciate how he takes their breakup. He's obviously hurt, but understands that Annie's looking for a different kind of relationship than he can give her. He's not the jealous, possessive or mean-spirited type that Rom-Coms often paint the ex as. Instead he gives her his blessing to find her happiness elsewhere simply because he wants her to be happy.
Despite you being very specific, my brain still managed to mixed up your comment as talking about Bill Pullman in While You Were Sleeping not Sleepless in Seattle and I was SO confused lol.
Walter is a good solid man in the film - in the beginning when he’s trying to learn her family and romantically treating her to New York and going to Tiffany’s and picking out china - they are obviously two peas in a pod. His reaction when she broke their engagement was kind and I think he would have taken her back if it didn’t work out.
While you were sleeping is one of my favorite movies. I think their relationship has the best potential for working (despite the proposal at the end) bc they learned to really see each other and the dreams of the other and encouraged the furniture making and Italy passport stamp even when it didn’t seem either would gain or benefit from the other’s desires. They were already supportive of each other when it appeared they were to be in-laws. And she came clean about her lies before any true relationship could start and when she told the truth, she didn’t expect anything from him, asked for no second chance and took responsibility for deceiving everyone. Was the whole movie a bit silly far fetched? Yes, but in a delightful way. Hands down, my fav rom-com. I adore Bullock’s and Pullman’s chemistry, and agree supporting cast is… chef’s kiss!
I agree about it being a healthier relationship (by rom-com standards). It is fun watching them get to know each other is such a normal and sweet way. And like you said, they have real, substantial conversations, which doesn't often happen in this genre. The best part about that movie is still the crazy grandma and her one liners. "I like mass better in Latin. It's nicer when you don't know what they're saying."
While You Were Sleeping has always been my favorite romcom ever. It would actually be fun to have more of a deep dive on Lucy as a character. Because it touches more on just needing to find romance, but she is a woman who has been dealing with loneliness and the fact she could feel a semblance of that again is very relatable and heartwarming. I also love how it seems to twist some common romcom tropes on its head, and not to mention the humor and amazing cast!
i cannot express how much i love Alan for his rant rn, best episode of cinema therapy ive ever seen solely for the fact that i relate SO much to Alan here, i am VERY passionate about critiquing film and i get exactly this heated over problematic and shoddy writing/marketing/film making and Alan is extremely right the entire time go off king
I like that in Pretty Woman the fight is more realistic. He’s not the most up-standing, respectful guy treating her perfectly all the time, he is the type of guy who would hire a prostitute. And she shouldn’t stay with a guy who treats her like that, but he may be the first guy she’s been with who attempted an apology and admitted he was wrong, so she thinks that’s pretty respectful. They do truly care about each other, flaws and all, and I think he does learn to do better.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE how they were able to respect Allen's VERY strong opinions (which i uave none on this subject) but at the same time made it almost impossible for people to get offended. They've done it a few times but this is the most drastic example. What an important skill to have as a channel. Everyone on this team is a genius and I love all of it.
Watching Alan explode with emotion was the most epic Valentines Day gift ever!...or maybe I should say Daylight Savings Time gift, since I'm only able to watch this a month later. Thank you for your extreme honesty and performance of expression!
The editors did such an excellent job with Alan's Never Been Kissed rant. I especially love the T Swift lyric as Jonathan is trying to chuckle it off haha.
While You Were Sleeping is in my top five favorite films of all time. The conversation at the dinner table where they argue about the height of all great actors, how the mom says the potatoes are creamy, and the grandma being confused is truly relatable!
While You Were Sleeping is my all time favorite romcom. It’s a Christmas movie to me and I watch it several times a year. I love Lucy and Bill Pullman together-but better yet, I LOVE THE FAMILY, the neighbors, the coworkers, the things that happen while Peter is sleeping, Chicago, I’m in NYC and it makes me nostalgic about Christmas lights seen from apartment windows, the winter, the Christmas Tree she pulls up the window. I love that it ended being ranked no. 1 on here.
Absolutely the best cast and it is very funny, well written and well paced. I also love the sound track. The whole film just WORKS! I drag out my DVD and watch it when I’m down.
Clueless and While You Were Sleeping deserve the top 2 spots. Clueless has more nostalgic peak 90's vibes but While You Were Sleeping hits more in the feels. The slow burn and supporting cast make it. Honourable mention for potential future relationship videos would be Return to Me. So sweet and another amazing supporting cast.
I would love to see them therapize Return to Me! The entire cast is amazing! It's also such a beautiful portrayal of grieving the loss of a spouse. I can't think of too many films that portray those raw emotions and the process of coming back to life again, particularly from the perspective of a man, in such a real and relatable way.
@@lisakrekelberg5540 “Return to Me” is one of my favorites. So is “Dan in Real Life,” with Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche. (and MANY others; they are the main characters) This movie also covers loss of a spouse and the ability to love again, while honoring the lost love. Perhaps they could do an episode with that theme and these two movies, along with a couple others. (If they haven’t done this idea yet, that is.)
While You Were Sleeping is one of the cleanest, sweetest romcoms that I really enjoyed & relatable to me... I was at one point like Lucy - lonely & wishing for someone to love & be loved... I used to watch it every Xmas because I longed for a warm family like that... it kept me company for a few yrs. Yes, it didn't make a lot of sense but, it's romcom & I was young... lol. :) It now has sentimental value in my heart.
Once you get past the weirdness that puts her in that family's path, it's completely adorable and believable. They feel so real and the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman is so good. It's my favorite romantic comedy and a favorite holiday film.
One thing I appreciate about it is how it doesn't try to inflate Lucy's circumstances. She works an ordinary job and has an apartment/lifestyle to match. You do honestly feel the reality that prior to where the movie starts Lucy is someone whose been dealt some tough cards and is stuck in a rut where meeting the family opens her up again.
This was terrifically entertaining! I appreciate the distinction you made between "is this movie an enjoyable watch?" and "does this story show a realistic and healthy portrayal of love and relationships?" Because I adore Sleepless in Seattle, but it's not realistic at all! And it even makes fun of itself for it, during the scene when Rosie O'Donnell is talking about "An Affair to Remember" - "It's a movie! Your problem is that you don't want to be in love, you want to be in love IN A MOVIE." 😂
As a hopeless romantic, I LOVE your couple ranking videos! While You Were Sleeping deserves the first place!! 💖Such a comfort movie! I re watched it on Christmas and I got all the feels! I love Sandra Bullock's character. I find her feelings of loneliness and desire to connect with other people so relatable. And the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman is so heart-fluttering!!!! One of my favorite rom coms!!

I haven't been watching too much Cinema Therapy recently (mainly because I've spent so much time APPLYING your guys' lessons over the past 5-ish months) but the comedic chemistry between Jonathan & Alan seems to have gotten soothingly sharp
While you were Sleeping is my favorite movie. Pullman is my favorite actor and his chemistry with Sandy was so spot on. Such a lovable family to watch.
I watch While You Were Sleeping MULTIPLE times a yr and even more during Christmas Time. It's so wholesome and warms my heart. "I don't drink anymore....I don't drink any LESS either" Elsie was the frikkin best.😂
This is an adorable video. Love hearing two guys break down the rom com genre with taste and humor! You picked two of my favorites as your top two. But really, it’s refreshing to talk about what these movies get wrong and right about healthy relationships. And your unabashed crushes on Bill Pullman and Paul Rudd are so cute and totally on point.
Alan going off on Never Been Kissed is something I never knew I needed to see, but I did. I couldn't stop laughing the longer it went on, and your editor did a great job at escalating it all. 😂🤣
Never been kissed was one of my favourite movies as a teenager, but when I watched years later and I had teenage nieces, I realised the huge ick factor… Whilst you were sleeping was always my favourite and remains so these days. The chemistry of both leads is unmatched, the whole cast is hilarious and those family conversations where everyone is talking about different things (“can you imagine Dustin Hoffman taking the Alamo?”) are so much like my family that I find them really endearing. But like you said, for me the biggest pull was the fact that they were both so attracted and so respectful of his brother, regardless of how deserving he was
Alan the Chancellor is the best! 😂 The more the editing kept going, the more I laughed. It made me laugh more than many of the comedy movies of late 😂😂😂
You know guys, I've had a terrible cold for a week and a hard time in general and I just laughed so freakin hard and loud because of Alans rant and the cancelled signs I almost cried. So thank you for that 💕
I saw While You Were Sleeping five times in the movie theatre with different family members and didn't get tired of it. Bill Pullman was so wonderful in Space Balls and played the best grieving widower with an angel wife in Casper.
Thank you for giving While You Were Sleeping such a positive spotlight. It's been my favorite rom-com for years and definitely deserves to be seen by more people!
Ironically, Sir Lancelot wound up sleeping with a married woman. Who's husband, by the way, he had sworn loyalty to. He was lousy by modern AND medieval standards.
@@18Hongo Also I think I recall that Lancelot was a later addition to the Arthur stories, tossed in by French influences of courtly romance at the time. Friggin’ fanfic.
@19Rena96 Largely because medieval readers really buzzed off a tragedy. Watching Lancelot fall from grace was probably very popular with 15th century audiences.
Although I love Drew Berrymore, I want to take a moment to thank the editors, John, and Alan. I'm thanking Alan for ranting about how he really feels about Drew, John, for being a great friend and lovingly listening to his friend's rant, and the editors for capturing it so beautifully and editing it in such a way that made it that much more hilarious to watch. The fact that the teacher in Never Been Kissed thinks she's a minor for most of the movie should put it at the bottom of the list for that reason alone
Agreed, their entire relationship is based on a lie, and there's no way that either of them would be viewed sympathetically today.
THIS. I was just thinking the same thing. At least Pretty Woman is two informed, consenting adults. NBK is a woman lying about her identity and a man attracted to his minor female student. Hard. Pass.
EXACTLY!!! At least with Pretty Woman they were both adults, he knew what she did for a living AND he paid for services.
FACTS!
As a teen, I loved NBK, but watching it in my late 30s after copious growth and therapy really opened my eyes. That movie is awful realistically and sets a bad message to young women.
The hero of this video was the editor who so flawlessly illustrated the scope and magnitude of Alan's anger. Chef's kiss.
Came here to write the same, absolute legends, the editors!
this is the comment I was looking for! UA-cam Editing Award goes to....this video!
It truly was amazing. I was in tears. Absolutely hilarious.
The editing was amazing. My husband only heard it and couldn't understand why I was laugh-crying so hard that my face muscles hurt.
Running through the dramatic onlookers of V for Vendetta during V's big speech - and plastering Alan on the screens instead - absolutely killed me.
The editor deserves an Oscar for Alan’s rant
David is the best!!
Oh my that was hilarious! 🤣
It’s even funnier for me because I just recently watched V for Vendetta, so it’s hilarious seeing the reference so soon after watching it. But yes, 10/10 amazing editing and brilliant joke
Came here to say this, the editor is the MVP lol
"Growing into a version of you that was always in there" is so beautiful and powerful!
I am LIVING for Alan's pure rage at Never Been Kissed. Literally the highlight of my day, thank you 😂💀
I live, but to serve. (Alan here)
It spoke to me! I have always hated that movie, even when I was a teen!
Never been kissed just refers to her young age she is portraying.. nothing literal. (Love you, Alan! 😁 Pls don’t hate me!
I'm watching this at night, cackling at the rant, and hoping I don't wake my daughter.
This is the sort of passion I LOVE and often do myself lmao
Just as Alan finished his rant, a firetruck and ambulance drove past my house and it was perfect.
Damn you made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
My favorite part of this video because I agree 100%. I LOLed so hard

🤣👍👏👏👏👏
In Clueless, Josh has this talk with Cher, after the stressed lawyer scolds her and says she’s destroyed her father’s case. What Josh says there, shows how Josh sees her good heart, he sees how she tries to take care of everyone. It’s not just that she’s cute, he sees her good core.
Fully agree with this. He appreciates the core of who she is and sees the lovely young woman that she has been growing into.
@@ariwl1I agree. Josh likes her looks but he also likes Cher for her personality and all of her quirks.
Yes. I loved how he stood up for her in that scene because he knew she didn’t mean anything malicious by it and he pointed out if he really cared about these files, the lawyer should have paid close attention.
Agreed. He did see how much she cared about people and if she cares about someone or something, she puts her mind to it.
The editing during Alan's rant I cannnn't 🤣🤣🤣
Jono here. We review all the edits along the way and give them final approval. We had no idea that was coming. It was phenomenal. Our editors are the absolute best.

Omg the v for vendetta edit hahaha so genius

Was I imagining the theme of Jaws?
I'm German and I remember my mum ranting about Hollywood romcoms one day back in the 90ies when I was a teenager. She sat me down and said: "Americans might believe this is what love is about, but here in Germany actually falling in love isn't the story and isn't the complicated part, the story starts at the wedding and is nothing like those films. It's about accepting that your partner isn't perfect and about respecting yourself and each other as people. This stuff is like food from MC Donald's and true love is like grandma's roast pork with red cabbage and dumplings."😂
I agree about all of that… except the cabbage LOL
And btw I’m American and think normal people agree with your mum. It’s a shame that other countries view Americans through the lens of entertainment, which is always stilted toward some story goal and rarely realistic.
I have a lot of Asian friends who think this about our American family culture and I keep telling them that what they see on TV isn’t how we really are (for the most part)… for instance, me and my siblings take care of our aging parents and they are usually shocked.
@@Liberteabelle yes unfortunately Hollywood promotes very negative stereotypes about the USA.
But don't worry, there's negative stereotypes about every country. 😁
@@helgaioannidis9365 lol so true! (But a LOT of American entertainment out there…)
I love that analogy!
Yeah... I was listening to them wondering if they had ever even seen Pretty Woman.
Very well said
That's so true.
Props to the editing team for how they handled that Alan Meltdown xD
I fully enjoyed the V for Vendetta editing to the fullest. That is praiseworthy
I enjoyed the editing on this so much. It enhanced everything and Jono is trying to get the video back on track and Alan says hold my popcorn 😂
I'm watching it right now and I'm fkng DYING!! This is the best thing that's ever happened on the channel. 😂😂
A bit harsh on Drew Barrymore. But definitely entertaining rant.
Kinda agree on her acting in that movie though 🤣🙃. Definitely worst movie of all 5.
I got to the Meltdown... so very good. God, this will be in my head whenever I go on a rant
I adore While You Were Sleeping; it's my very favorite rom com. Admittedly I have grown to like rom coms less as I've gotten older, but the key to a good rom com is ALWAYS a great supporting cast. The family in While You Were Sleeping makes the movie.
The fact that she fit in with that wonderful family was icing on a perfect cake.
I hate that line so much,
> Their whole relationship is based on a lie
It's a NON-ISSUE.
@@Zeithri come on dude literally hit on a teen without knowing her well enough as a person...of course it's based on lie
Stupid analogy

"You don't jump straight to engagement." You do when it's Bill Pullman! 😍
Fair!
Bill Pullman's cocky smirk is The best
Was just watching his son in “Lessons in Chemistry”. He was fantastic. But his VOICE and mannerisms. I knew he was his son before I knew he was his son.

I think Bill Pullman in "While You Were Sleeping" was my first crush 😍

While You Were sleeping is my favorite RomCom of all time. I love Sandra and Bill's chemistry and the comedy is just *Chef's Kiss*
Exactly. It went from suspicious to you’re wrong for my brother but right for me.
"Love is safety and respect." Put that on stone!
Yes, I loved that bit so much, too!!! It sums up what movies make us think love is but what it really isn't in real life sooooo well.
im loosing my shit with alan so pissed about never been kissed with the jaws music im DYING
Jono looks a bit shellshocked by the end there too!
Came here to say the same. Him going off was the funniest frickin' thing I've seen all week!!
The rant, the music, and the shots from V for Vendetta were a masterclass in editing magistry. KUDOS to the editing team for Cinema Therapy :D
I may be off base, but I get the vague impression that Alan doesn't care for that movie.
The funny thing for me is I always assumed that line meant not a romantic kiss... Like she's kissed her brother and parents, etc, or maybe kissed a boy when they (were both, really) in grade 3... but that's not a *real* kiss.
"love is a commitment, not an action" YES
Soooo good!!
Isn’t commitment an action within itself
I think that he starts liking her even before then as he was jealous when she started hanging out with Christian
@yummysushipyjamas you're so right I forgot about that!! He looks past the chiffon and sees her heart a lot throughout the film
He's her step brother though... how is that my super weird and unhealthy.
I just want to give your editor a massive round of applause. Alan's rant was fun, but damn, you took it to a whole new level of awesome and amazing!

@@navineon4961 it’s especially rough when you’re a girl and you don’t like the romance genre. People act like it’s some crime.

Alan’s rant on Never Been Kissed is so unhinged, I can’t.
Yes!!
Easily my favorite romcom of all time. Harry’s speech at the end is one of my favorite pieces of dialogue.
LOVE that film! Lots of topics to cover on Rob Reiner’s directing genius and the writing and complexity of platonic and romantic relationships both good and bad, the clips of how other couples met and ended up together! Oh my gosh! That would be amazing!!!
Yes! One of the best films!
I just realized how much her son Jack has her same smile @ 14:30

While You Were Sleeping is in my top 10 movies. When I was a hopeless romantic teenager/YA desperate for a large family holiday with my future spouse, I'd cry at the Christmas scene where she's just watching the entire family and you can tell it's what she's never had but always longed for. I still remember the first family Christmas with my husband, feeling similarly to Lucy in that scene, just relishing the chaos and love with a full heart 🥹
It's such a warm and comfy scene. I'm glad your dream eventually came true. :)
I love that 😊
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is like that too though more chaotic.
Editing Alan's rant into V for Vendetta is just *gold*!
I loved While you were sleeping as a kid, because Bill Pullman. But as an adult I love it even more, because I’ve lost my parents pretty early and I totally get her not just falling in love with Bill Pullman, but also falling in love with his family and being a part of a family again. Makes me cry almost every time 🥲
You might enjoy Alexis Hall's romance novel take on it, Ten Things That Never Happened.
I love Bill Pullman too, and his entire family are wonderful. My son and I love the Christmas present scene with the sister and her gloves. So sweet! And… I don’t drink any more; I don’t drink any less either!
Hugs to you, I also experienced early loss and I feel ya. This is my top comfort movie and even thinking about the Christmas scene makes me tear up.
That movie had an absurdly stellar cast. I'm embarrassed by the number of times I watched that movie not recognizing the grandma as Mrs. Banks.
@@willah.7259 thanks I´ll have a look
Also it's never clear if she's "leaving her life behind" like the speaker in this video implied, it's left unanswered exactly how they work the distance out - but we are just supposed to have faith they will, because we know they are fated to be together.
wait what? there's a Meg Ryan moview i havent seen yet?! (goes to Google) 😂
I’ll check it out
yall are majorly missing the point, yes its great that the ending isnt framed like theyre instantly in love and dating. but the problem is the woman STALKED HIM.
Just rewatched French Kiss over the weekend.
I came for the therapy, I stayed for Alan's rant. It was beautiful.

The JAWS music while Alan goes off the rails about why Never Been Kissed is terrible has me DEAD 😂
😊😅
Came to the comments to see if someone made this point... Good on you!! ;) Austen is everywhere.

Honestlyyyy this guys just drop one liners that are golden
Josh definitely sees Cher for more than others do. When Cher’s father’s associate attorney calls her a moron for filing something “incorrectly” (because he gave a professional lawyer task, that he didn’t want to do, to an unqualified 16-year-old girl), Josh immediately responds with “she’s *not* a moron”
Throughout the movie he discovers that she’s charming, charismatic, and has a strong way with words (those take intelligence), but he knows the world only sees her as a dumb blonde.
Besides, she recalls Mel Gibson correctly, and he didn’t say that. It was that Polonius guy.
I always felt that he was able to relax and be himself around her, which he doesn't seem to do with anyone else, she makes him feel safe, valued and respected.
I read this before watching the video and my mind went to "I can't believe belieeeevee that Cher is in this episode" 💀
while you were sleeping is simply the best, for all the reasons. that scene in the church when she finally comes clean with all of them, her raw honesty and vulnerability, their grace and humor, just gets me every time, and i start ugly blubbing all over the place. so incredibly well acted all around. one of my top 10 rainy day feel-good movies 💗

@@charlief3169 Ah yes, the Bill Pullman in "While You Were Sleepless In Seattle" mix-up
@@charlief3169same here😅
Walter is a good solid man in the film - in the beginning when he’s trying to learn her family and romantically treating her to New York and going to Tiffany’s and picking out china - they are obviously two peas in a pod. His reaction when she broke their engagement was kind and I think he would have taken her back if it didn’t work out.
I like Walter's line "I don't want to be someone you're settling for. I don't want to be someone that anyone settles for." He has self-respect.
@@wanderer7956 Also helped that the grandma is one of the Hollywood legends, and the female lead in one of my favorite films ever, The Court Jester.
@@anarionelendili8961 The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true… 😉👑
@@wanderer7956 I adore the grandma and ALL the other family members! Their dinner conversation was a delight! And let us not forget the leaning… lol
One of my favourite movies but I do find myself yelling at her to tell Jack, she has so many opportunities right at the start!
I would LOVE that! I think she is such an underrated character!
I agree, it reminds me just a bit of Amelie’s journey. Her intense loneliness has sheltered her from the world.
While you were sleeping is my favorite of them all. The chemistry between. Sandra and Bill and the supporting cast and Peter Boyle and Glynnis Johns!!
The spark is a moment, real love is safety. Keep saying this, we all need to hear it
i cannot express how much i love Alan for his rant rn, best episode of cinema therapy ive ever seen solely for the fact that i relate SO much to Alan here, i am VERY passionate about critiquing film and i get exactly this heated over problematic and shoddy writing/marketing/film making and Alan is extremely right the entire time go off king
alan's movie experience always keeping it real and we love him for that
I like that in Pretty Woman the fight is more realistic.
Agree. And in real life, do men always or even often apologize so well? Most don't. This is far from the bottom relationship for me.
@@hcf4kd1992it's certainly one of the better apologies in film!
I want an episode ranking relationships in Rom Cons from Meg Ryan!! Because French Kiss, Kate and Leopold, Joe vs the Volcano… SO MANY!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE how they were able to respect Allen's VERY strong opinions (which i uave none on this subject) but at the same time made it almost impossible for people to get offended. They've done it a few times but this is the most drastic example. What an important skill to have as a channel. Everyone on this team is a genius and I love all of it.
the way I was so invested in Alan’s Never Been Kissed rant. I was on the edge of me seat, that was so flawlessly edited
I am a teacher, AND i had a teacher have a thing for me when I was in high school. His rant was balm for my soul.
I want cinema therapy to start a Dundee's kind of award ceremony for their staff. because that editor deserves an award.
Nah I love that movie. And I take issue with soooo many pedo issues in Hollywood.
@@melissabrown2156nooo! That’s so sad. :(
“ They just gotta keep their hands north of the equator for the next couple years.”
Jono, that was an excellently eloquent line.
So Alan…tell me how you really feel about “Never Been Kissed” 😂😂😂
😅😂😅😂🤣
While You Were Sleeping is in my top five favorite films of all time. The conversation at the dinner table where they argue about the height of all great actors, how the mom says the potatoes are creamy, and the grandma being confused is truly relatable!
Alan you made me laugh so hard! Thank you editors for the way you did that!
This video is the only Valentine’s gift I’m going to get this year😂, but it’s the best! Thank you Cinema Therapy for making my day!
Thanks for watching! 😊
You can always give yourself a Valentine's gift. Self love.
1 on here.
Same. The overlapping dinner conversation gets me every times.
@@McShelf1 These mashed potatoes are so creamy.
@@grutarg2938 John Wayne wasn’t Spanish.
@@McShelf1 Would you want to see Duston Hoffman save the Alamo?
@lisakrekelberg5540 yes!! Exactly. It's such a could depiction of grief, starting new, and just such a gentle, conplex and beautiful romance.
@@lisakrekelberg5540
“Return to Me” is one of my favorites.
Return to Me is a great suggestion! I love that movie.
Omg PLEASE do more of these rom com reviews!!
We're already working on a 2000s one!
Yeah, Sleepless in Seattle is at least self aware (to an extent i guess).
the editors need a raise for their work during Alan's rant, those were hilarious
I loved the editing of Alan's extended scorched earth rant!
Jono and Alan: It’s Valentines!
Me: Frantically checking the date even though I know it’s still the 13th in the UK

I haven't been watching too much Cinema Therapy recently (mainly because I've spent so much time APPLYING your guys' lessons over the past 5-ish months) but the comedic chemistry between Jonathan & Alan seems to have gotten soothingly sharp
I’m very disappointed that a therapist is recommending better health for how bad they treat their therapists and clients.
I'd like to ask for some elaboration on that please
I think he’s talking about better help. Apparently better help treats their therapists and patients poorly
Yeah I cringe whenever I see better help.
While you were Sleeping is my favorite movie. Pullman is my favorite actor and his chemistry with Sandy was so spot on. Such a lovable family to watch.
My absolute favorite - it feels so warm and real
I never, ever get tired of this film!! It was my “Sick day movie” when I was a kid, it absolutely is still one of my”comfort films”!
My favorite too! Best of all time!
I watch While You Were Sleeping MULTIPLE times a yr and even more during Christmas Time. It's so wholesome and warms my heart. "I don't drink anymore....I don't drink any LESS either" Elsie was the frikkin best.😂
Best romcom ever
The whole family dialogues were the best! "I didn't say he was Spanish, I only said he was tall!" - "Those mashed potatoes are so great!"

I recently introduced my children to it, and realised how lovely it was to be able to watch it with them because it is wholesome.
This is the first time ever that someone shares this experience of this movie with me. Thank yooouu, its the best romcom
Alan’s rant just made my day. Thank you Cinema Therapy, for making my single self smile just in time for Valentines Day!
The rant 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I can’t deal! 😭😭😭😂😂😂 loved the editing! More of these please

Never been kissed was one of my favourite movies as a teenager, but when I watched years later and I had teenage nieces, I realised the huge ick factor…
Whilst you were sleeping was always my favourite and remains so these days.
The more the editing kept going, the more I laughed. It made me laugh more than many of the comedy movies of late 😂😂😂
The real Valentine's Day gift is Alan's Drew Berrymore rant! Go off King 👑
You know guys, I've had a terrible cold for a week and a hard time in general and I just laughed so freakin hard and loud because of Alans rant and the cancelled signs I almost cried. So thank you for that 💕
Hope you're feeling better!
I saw While You Were Sleeping five times in the movie theatre with different family members and didn't get tired of it. Bill Pullman was so wonderful in Space Balls and played the best grieving widower with an angel wife in Casper.
And his speech almost at the end of "Independence Day", oh my, how he escalated the words. 😍
Loved him in Casper 👻
The rant editing with V for Vendetta is perfect.
Thank you for giving While You Were Sleeping such a positive spotlight. It's been my favorite rom-com for years and definitely deserves to be seen by more people!
Richard Gere is so good at White Knighting that he later got cast as Sir Lancelot 😁
@@TrueYellowDart Thats the fun part of the Arthurian mythos, its like 90% fan fic. The original stuff is basically just Arthur, Bedivere and Sir Kay.
@@18Hongo and yet he's depicted as the most loyal and noble of all the knights.
I truly love you guys
