Astrid and Hiccup are definitely one of the strongest couples to come out of a Kids' movie, and aren't toxic. I love that their opposing personalities complement each other perfectly, and she admits that she adores his sensitive side.
Astrid was quite toxic, she hit him, yelled at him all because he was weak in her eyes. She changed, but she defo was toxic towards him before he impressed her, "fine Ill admit it, this is pretty cool"
@@The-Mask021 May I remind you which sex has historically been the one to possess more power/ control over the other in straight relationships? It is hypocritical and cowardly to want to be the dominant partner and yet blame others when you abuse that power. Great power comes great responsibility and all that.
@@The-Mask021what are you even talking about? I have no idea where these statements came from, because they sure as heck they didn't come from Cinema's Therapy videos.
Another small detail that I love is when she lands as he's working on the map, after she finishes joking and he starts telling his story, she immediately starts working on his map, and he just lets her. It shows not only how in tune she is with his hobby to pick it up and continue where he left off without having to say anything or ask what he wants, but how much he trusts her to not even glance down or give her advice as she starts marking on his life's work (or at least his adult life). She knows he wants to make the map and he knows that she'll do a good job without his input. It's small but it's something I've always wanted in my own relationship.
It gets even better when you notice that he hands her the pencil. Not only is he happy to let her work on the project, he invites it. But to me it always looked more like he knew she was the better artist.
Its actually been stated that Astrid contributes as much to the map as Hiccup does, and that the two go off on charting expeditions all the time. She just wasn’t with him on that one because she was racing, and hiccup went off to chart instead of racing because he didn’t want to talk to his dad about becoming chief. Astrid probably found him so quickly because she knew what he was doing and knew where the last region they were charting was
It shows that for all the apparent differences between them they're totally in sync with each other by this point - maybe Astrid is more physically orientated but she understands, appreciates and even wants to participate in Hiccup's interests, heck she even grasps that he's not interested in physical pursuits or the glory Stoic wants to bestow on him and just accepts that's how he is, RTTE even suggesting how humble he is actually caught her eye even before they were a thing.
I'm glad you didn't really critique Astrid's attitude to Hiccup prior to her finding out about Toothless. I so often see people overly hating on Astrid for seeming to hate Hiccup and then, "just because" she goes on this romantic flight with him, she "suddenly" likes him. She was neutral to him in the beginning because he wasn't all that good at dragon hunting, she didn't actively dislike him at that point though. Her growing dislike of him in their Dragon Training classes stemmed from jealousy; she couldn't understand how she could train pretty much her whole life to be as good as she was, to be the best warrior she could be, and all of a sudden here comes Hiccup, who used to always get in the way but now is BEATING her in class?! Once she met Toothless and he and Hiccup showed her that dragons really could be gentle and kind, she finally understood how Hiccup suddenly knew so much and was able to let go of her resentment. That's it; she just wanted to understand how this was even possible and, once she did, she was capable of opening her mind to the possibility that Hiccup was right, that they didn't have to hunt dragons.
Yeah, thank you! Someone who highlights this finally! I think that not only she is completely neutral to him at the beginning, as she is the only one that really doesn't pick on him (fishlegs as well i guess), the only times she reacts negatively to him is when he clearly tries to be something he is not, so a dragon killer in that case (and this is basically the main theme of the movie). A lot of reactors see her as a bully because i guess they think she is "meant to be" in that role. But really she doesn't treat him badly, other than the times where he is in dragon training and he clearly doesn't care (talking about other stuff and being distracted during training, almost killing them both against the nadder). I wish this was highlighted more because while yes, she wasn't in love or anything before, she also didn't dislike him or something and she actually showed interest in what he was doing, especially during his success in dragon training.
On top of all that, Astrid fell in love with Hiccup (gradually) after she realised that Hiccup finally had the courage to do what he wanted, instead of what the tribe/father expected of him. They expected him to be something he just wasn't, but he tried all the more to be it. When he figured out what he wanted, Astrid questioned him, and Hiccup stood by what he wanted and just said, "Yes." You could see Astrid's face change slowly as she realised that Hiccup actually showed courage for once.
There is an episode in the first season of the tv show that stands out to me, which shows that Astrid never really disliked Hiccup before the events of the 1st movie. In fact, it seemed he already caught her attention before in that she thought he was never a sore loser. Add: I went and looked for that episode (called Thawfest). Here's the quote from Astrid: "You know what I always liked about you, Hiccup? You were always a gracious loser. Who knew you'd be a lousy winner?" Because at the time Hiccup was winning over Snotlout for the first time in forever (because of the added dragon events in the Thawfest games) and it was kind of getting to his head. This was about 2/3rds into the episode. But those 1st 2 sentences in the quote is what gave me the impression that Astrid never disliked him, and maybe even admired him for being, as she said, a gracious loser.
So I think the easiest way I can think about it is like he "didn't like him" before because *she DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HIM!* 🤦♂️ She used to have an idea of Hiccup but actually didn't know him that much so how's she even supposed to love him or like him? The problem with most of the ones that criticize her is that they're used to those movies where "they fall in love at first sight " 🙄 Hiccups and Astrid relationships is something that grows gradually from the first movie and I LOVE how they not force it to an immediately marriage ❤
@@My_God_is_Jahovah ooh yeah. She definitely had a bit of a swoony time during the dragon flight, but she's much too level headed to be won over by that alone. I love that one of the first moments where she's really impressed by him is when he says, perfectly cooly, yes I am willing to risk everything for my pet dragon. Not just because he stood up to her. Not just because he was so sure of his position that there was not a waver in his voice. But realising suddenly that the thing he is so sure about (after being kinda flakey and fake in training) is giving up everything he has for the wellbeing of *someone else*. The core unwavering part of him that isn't fake is empathy. Not a squishy feely self indulgent empathy. A simple clean commited selflessness. Probably doesn't hurt that he's just demonstrated how he treats the people he loves. Unwavering selflessness. That's a pretty attractive relationship benefit as well as a character trait that gains her respect
Fun fact about the scene of Astrid mimicing Hiccup: most of the time when you're recording for an animated film like this, all of the actors record their lines separately. This was one of the few scenes where they actually had America Ferrera and Jay Baruchel recording together. In the recording booth, America was actually shrugging her shoulders, which prompted Jay to ask "What are you doing with your shoulders there?". It's a tiny bit of back and forth improve that you don't normally get in animated films, and I'm so glad that they included it.
@@Randoman590 Agreed. Similarly, I've seen a video where Jack Black and Angelina Jolie were doing improvs together in a booth for recording the scene in Kung Fu Panda 3, and that was pretty funny.
One thing not mentioned that I appreciated was Astrid taking advice from Hiccup’s mother (I forgot her name) because she’s experienced being married to a stubborn chief going through challenges, but also tailors that advice to Hiccup specifically. Obviously Astrid wouldn’t blindly follow that advice if it didn’t work, but she’s open to feedback on how to be a good partner to Hiccup. I think that falls into the “being open-minded” category.
Yes Valka is great as well for how observant she is and Astrid being open to her input I think also shows the great deal of respect she has for her, both of the characters are so mature I love them
There is the very cool aspect of Astrid taking Valka's advice seriously and also be discerning with what she has to say, but Valka is a big part of that too. She doesn't at all try to hide or excuse that she made things very hard for Stoic by leaving. But she doesn't wear it like an albatross, she allows that experience to lead a change in herself as she transitions to a mentor role. She tells Astrid what she thinks is right, but both of them know that Valka can be wrong. Both of them know Valka is probably at least on the right track, but neither of them take her first bit of advice as absolute truth. Both are open to the idea of it needing adjustment.
I love that they don't start from a shitty place and then "fix" each other. They're just solid from the outset. I feel like a lot of healthy relationships in movies/TV start from an unhealthy place so they have an arc, but it does imply that a bad relationship is just a little character growth away from being a healthy one. And that gets dangerous quickly.
@@ellevictor474 if im being honest as a fellow girl it might be because girls are either jealous of astrid or because they just do not know what to do with a healthy relationship
@@dutchvanl it is great that astrid and hiccup are both still them but they definitely matured, althougth i do wish we got more her kickass with an ax
I think what I like the most about the way Hiccup and Astrid are animated, is that there are always little things going on between them while they talk. The teasing scene in particular. Her picking up working on the map while he talks, all the little touches and physical contact. That had to have been a massive amount of work, particularly if the majority of it was keyframe animation, but it just does a lot of the lifting to sell their closeness and comfort levels with one another. This trilogy really is something very special. And so is Astrid and Hiccup's relationship.
All those little things make it seem more real, IMO. All the healthy couples I know do something similar. I'd guess it's because when you're that emotionally close to someone, you want to be physically close as well.
It's the kind of attention to detail that comes with a higher budget - the B and C-list animations have them just standing around like mannequins, waiting to speak.
One of the things I really appreciate about these two is about how casually physically affectionate they are with each other. They're not making out constantly, but there's cheek kissing, hand holding, arms around the shoulders, leaning against each other, and all sort of other little touches that show how much they love each other. They also seem comfortable being that way with each other in front of other people, which shows a high level of comfort and security in the relationship. It's especially nice seeing Hiccup initiate and reciprocate many of these gestures, since boys are often socialized to not be physically affectionate in such a tender way, especially not publicly, even when it's with their partner.
When you first see his dad and his mom meet again, Stoic initiates the physical contact then as well. He’s gentle and affectionate. I think we can infer thy stoic might have drilled certain ideal on how to treat a lady into hiccup from a young age.
Definitely, there's always a subtle but vital physicality in their relationship - from the moment a scared Astrid grasps onto Hiccup when Toothless spooks her in HTTYD1 showing for all their disagreements and such when push comes to shove she knows she can trust him to keep her safe to how rapidly (relatively speaking) they become utterly comfortable with the other being their personal space. Sure they kiss plenty of times but far more often they're shown acclimatising into accepting being close and showing affection for the other.
So glad the writers didn't lazily make this a forced romance story and instead made it loving, genuine, healthy and supportive. If I ever get in a relationship, I hope it'll be similar to Hiccstrid.
Can we also take a moment appreciate Hiccup's mom in these clips. She's technically in a position where she could go a give him advice and have a heart to heart, but instead she encourages and gives Astrid space to build on her relationship with Hiccup.
Wow you’re right! That is so key. So many moms have a really hard time letting their son’s wife take their place as the main woman in his life. Leads to the devouring mother trope. I love that she’s so encourages him to lean on Astrid, not her, however much she might want that.
And I also love that, she understands that the time when she should have been his mother and let him lean on her is gone never to return. But she can help him build a life now by helping Astrid.
True. Despite wanting to make up for all that lost time she obviously wants back, she knows she can't be selfish. Her child is grown now & doesn't need a mom telling him what to do, he needs a partner. She knows she needs to put his relationship with his SO over his relationship with herself. The way to be a good mom in this circumstance is to let herself be 2nd instead of 1st, & be there for advice to them both if asked but not to interfere.
Also that she see's the mistakes that were made in her life which made stoic the vast into who he was. She doesn't want that for Hiccup and Astrid, still being the guidance that everyone needs no matter how far in life they get
Can we also talk about the precious few moments we got of Stoick and Valka’s relationship? When they finally see each other for the first time in years, and she’s so sure of all the things he’s going to say, yell at her for leaving him and Hiccup, and he just gently touches her cheek and says she’s as beautiful as she was when he lost her, and gently kisses her, not a near bone crushing embrace, which also would have been nice to see of course, but no, he wants to be soft and gentle with her, not because she can’t take or handle his strength (I mean, she can’t) but again, he wanted to be soft and gentle, I just love it.
Yeees and their dancing scene is still perhaps one of my absolute favorite scenes from the second movie, it brings so much joy to me and it’s so short it’s almost torture how we didn’t get to see more of them together. Absolutely great couples all around in the httyd universe
Eh I guess I’m in the minority because I didn’t like that she essentially faked her death and left him grieving like that. There were other ways to leave.
As someone who has lost loved ones, his reaction is always so great for me, because that's exactly how you would feel. You wouldn't care how or why. You would just be so grateful to get to spend more moments with them, and you would be gentle because you want to make sure it's real and not lose them again.
Another thing I loved during the "teasing vs sarcasm" scene is how casually helpful Astrid is, and how willing Hiccup is to accept her help. She offers to add to the map he's drawing, then she pulls him upright when the dragons knock them both down, and it's all non-verbal, in body language. I've always thought it was such a brilliant, subtle way to demonstrate how comfortable they are with each other. There's no patronizing on her part, no offended masculinity on his - just easy partnership and trust. And, like Alan said, it's all in the animation of their bodies to convey those subtleties! Fantastic work from the animators! Man, I love these movies. Thanks for covering them!!!
I never really considered it, but since Hiccup is missing a foot, he probably genuinely needed help getting up, but Astrid immediately helps him before he can even begin to struggle.
I first saw How to Train Your Dragon in college. I didn't have a good sense if what it was going to be, but I went with a group of people and was completely blown away. I immediately called my boyfriend (now husband) and told him he needed to see the movie immediately. He used to have dreams about flying on dragons, and he's a giant nerd with lots of tinkery projects going on and a deep passion for animals, especially dogs. He frickin' loved it. He saw so much of himself in Hiccup. By the time we saw the 3rd movie, we had two kids, a little girl and a toddler boy, and we wept through that entire last scene. It felt so familiar in the best way.
Truth. And no lie, forever bitter that they gave the Oscar for Best Original Score that year to 'The Social Network' over HTTYD. HTTYD's soundtrack literally carried _whole scenes_ and is just so damn emotionally powerful.
honestly same, when I'm listening to those "cinematic music" playlists and suddently the HTTYD score comes up, like a switch, I start tearing up. It really triggers something in me that I find so beautiful, epic and moving.
Fun fact: the narration Hiccup gives at the end of the movie that starts with “there were dragons when I was a boy…” is from the opening of the first book. I listened to it on audiobook, narrated by David Tennant. My now-husband and I saw this movie in theaters, and I’m not usually a cryer at movies, but when that narration kicked in I had tears flowing down my face and his reaction was like “OMG are you ok? What is happening right now…” 😅
Another cool note about the score: the track Romantic Flight, which plays during the first segment you guys analyzed, has two primary motifs. The first, the one it opens on, could be said to be Astrid's personal theme or the theme of the burgeoning connection between her and Hiccup, but the second (playing when Alan said "Hang on, just listen to this for a sec") is actually a modified version of the motif for Toothless as a character, which you can also hear in the franchise's main theme Test Drive. Hiccup and Astrid, as great as they are together, would likely never have come together if Hiccup hadn't had a chance to develop himself through his friendship with Toothless, and the first time that Astrid really gets a good glimpse into who Hiccup truly is at his core (the combination that she falls in love with of empathetic sensitivity and powerful strength and steadfastness of moral character) is right here on Toothless' back on her first flight. Toothless is the ultimate wingman, figuratively and literally. Not only that, but when the Vikings must say goodbye to their dragon friends at the end of the third movie, Hiccup, the first person to befriend a dragon and the last to work up the courage to give his farewell, can only get through the difficult experience of saying goodbye to Toothless by being figuratively and literally supported by Astrid through it. Toothless, both his presence and his absence, is a core part of the deep bond of love between Hiccup and Astrid, and it's friggin' genius that that idea is audibly represented by having Astrid's love theme be interwoven with Toothless' motif so early in Hiccup and Astrid's love story. The fact that John Powell did not win any Oscars for best original score for any of the three HTTYD movies is a crime against art. :D
@@anneblackwood9013 I know, right? The three scores got a few small nods, and I think all three were at least nominated for the Academy Award for best original score, but they won none of them. One of the great injustices in film of the decade of the 2010s in my opinion for sure
@@anneblackwood9013I believe he's won Annies for it - which are the specifically Animated equivalent to Oscars (because Oscars are for pretentious films and cartoons are for kids /sarcasm)
Yes! As I was listening to this i thought to myself “wait did he just combine Astrid’s and toothless’ themes there?!” While the focus of the movie is hiccups relationships with toothless and Astrid and his father, here Powell gives a nod to the relationship between Astrid and toothless. I love how a score has power to give unseen and unspoken dimension to supporting characters!
Always loved Astrid becuase she was the tough, cool, tomboy kinda girl character but was emotionally available and still embraced her femininity in her own way ( she also knew she was a catch). Peak 'careing and compassionate' doesn't have to mean weak or submissive for girl characters. Just like Hiccup's character is peak 'strong and brave' doesn't have to mean cold and muscular for a guy character.
Astrid comforts Hiccup a lot in the movies, because he goes through lots of angst in the movies, but in the series Astrid has a lot of vulnerable moments too and Hiccup is with her through all of it. It goes both ways.
yeah generally because the movies are centered around hiccup and his struggles, and the series are about all of them. I really do love how they’re always saving and supporting each other, and it’s just fantastic.
Talking about the score: Hiccup’s theme uses a lot of high pitched instruments, while Toothless’s theme uses a lot of low pitched instruments, and when combined, they balance each other out and fit in PERFECTLY.
The score becomes EVEN BETTER once you notice how HIccup's and Toothless' scores come together as well when they learn how to work together in that flying learning scene
That must have been part of how technically challenging it is. It's not trivial to make two themes work together, and it's genius to make two compelling standalone themes work together
One additional note to this song (the name is btw. "Test Drive"), is that before they learn to fly together, after their fall, the Toothless themes plays a few times and the Hiccup theme has some "hiccups" before both are played at the same time. Also the time Hiccups throws away the cheat-sheet and both thrust in each other. The score is amazing.
the moment in 7:49 is just amazing. Hiccup turining around, saying "yes", the emotional shift in Astrid's face from disbelief to realising that this is actually important to him to pragmatism, Hiccup turning away in a mix of hurt and fear of Toothless and Astrid asking "then what do we do?" This is so great. The writing, the animation, absoulute perfection. It instantly made me cry. My past relationship was not very healthy to say the least, my partner didn't really know how to support me, so seeing this is so special to me.
I love that you can see her face go from disbelief to complete respect. Until recently, she’d seen him as more of a pushover and then as she gets to see how he is around Toothless it goes to “oh, he’s actually tough in his own way” which is all conveyed in that one expression change.
One cool thing worth mentioning is that as the movies progress and hiccup has more and more of an effect on astrid, her design softens up a lot, looses its spikes and she lets her hair down more and more, all without loosing her cool badass look
That “okay, what do we do” is EVERYTHING! I love seeing that trust and understanding from her, it’s so nice to see that represented even if it’s in an animated movie about dragons
Your take on Astrid’s character reminded me of this: We’ve been taught that a strong character means someone who is loud, cold, opinionated, and could potentially be mean or aggressive. But in truth, those people are weak of character. A truly strong person is calm, knows how to listen, takes criticism, sets and respects boundaries, is patient, tolerant and confident without attacking others. So yes, Astrid does have a strong character all around, because even tho she’s tough, she’s fair and careful. Love her. And love these two, they’re one of my favorite fictional couples. Wish you could have added some clips from the animated series as their relationship grows slowly in it. Anyway, love your content and the editing! And love Alan, he’s such a crybaby just like me 🥹
I think another thing to add is that we get to see Astrid's strength again in the way she supports Hiccup. When she can see that he's struggling, she puts her own crap aside and goes to support him--to lend him her dragon, to talk to him and help him work through what he's feeling, to tease him a little so he won't just mope about what's been happening in his life recently. That's strength, right there. Sure, you can be tough and ride a dragon and swing an axe around and kick butt, and that's a type of strength, but I think the more important kind is the strength it takes to really love another person and be their partner in life, the way Astrid does. (I always wanted to be like Astrid as a kid, and I always thought it was because of the axe... Now I think I was wrong, and this^ is actually why.)
@@eliabeck689 As someone who has wanted an Astrid in my life ever since I saw that scene in the first movie when Hiccup was in his darkest hour, thank you for aspiring to be like Astrid. The scene: Astrid: (Shakes head a little) It's a mess! (bewildered slight chuckle) ... You must feel horrible. You've lost everything; your father, your tribe, your best friend... Hiccup: Thank you, for summing that up. ... Why couldn't I have killed that dragon when I found him in the woods?! Would've been better for everyone. Astrid: Yup! The rest of us would have done it! ... So, why didn't _you?_ Why _didn't_ you? Hiccup: I dunno... I couldn't. Astrid: That's not an answer. Hiccup: Why is this so important to you all of a sudden?! Astrid: Because I want to remember what you say, right now. Hiccup: Oh, for the love of-- (stammers) I was a coward. I was weak. I wouldn't kill a dragon. Astrid: You said _"wouldn't"_ that time. Hiccup: (stammers) Whatever! I wouldn't! 300 years and I'm the first viking who wouldn't kill a dragon! Astrid: ... First to ride one, though. So... ? Hiccup: I wouldn't kill him because he looked as frightened as I was. I looked at him and I saw myself. Astrid: I bet he's really frightened now. What are you gonna do about it? Hiccup: Uh.. probably something stupid. Astrid: Good, but you've already done that. Hiccup: Then, something crazy. Astrid: _That's_ more like it. This scene is one of the factors that brought me to the conclusion that "loving someone is being on their side, even when they, themselves, are not". I don't 'ship the Teen Titan's characters Robin and Raven, but in the cartoon that began in 2003, Robin essentially does this for Raven throughout her apocalyptic story arc. Also, Raven kind of does for Robin what Cinema Therapy discusses; when something is important to someone you truly care about, it becomes important to you. "I don't know if he's real, or not, but he's real to Robin and that's all that matters. The stress on his brain is destroying his body. Robin truly believes he's fighting Slade and Slade is winning..." @elyalvarz You're completely correct! A truly secure person; one who has conviction and self-assuredness is unafraid of having their physical being, or ideas challenged. People like this don't go around trying to prove they're strong because they _know_ it. They don't feel like they have to prove it to anyone.
And this^ then makes me think of Snotlout. I've never really liked him, because he's a bully (especially in the serieses), but he's a relatable bully--he wants to impress Astrid, and to do that he thinks he has to to be tough and Viking-like, so he does what he thinks he has to by picking on people weaker than him to make himself feel strong. But that's not actually strength, it's insecurity. I think, from a narrative standpoint, it's actually really cool that Snotlout is in the movie, because he acts as a foil to how Hiccup deals with insecurity, which is by turning to others for help. There's so much this movie does right when it comes to showing relationships and emotional progression. I could probably go on for hours about it... :)
@@Wei_Radula_RegimentThat scene, with Astrid’s “You lost everything” speech, is just easily the best and most important scene in the whole franchise. There is so much to talk about within it that it would need its own half hour video to talk about. And I think most of the people who don’t like the third movie are the same people who don’t understand the importance of that scene.
She could be scarred horrifically and made to look like Kuchisake-Onna, and because she's so caring and kind, people would still love her and think she's great.
My favorite animation/writing touch about Hiccup/Astrid is right after that scene with the teasing when she puts a little braid in his hair. The braid stays for the whole movie. It just felt like such a genuine teenager level romance thing to do, when a couple is getting more comfortable with touch and romance but are not adults in a marriage.
Such great acting by America Ferrera when Astrid is mimicking Hiccup because you can hear Astrid break her “Hiccup” character in how she laughs as she’s teasing him and it’s so great 😂
I love that this amazing and healthy relationship is present in a kids movie. We really don't get enough of these. Kids need to see healthy relationship so they know what that looks like when they're old enough to get in relationship and unfortunately not everyone has those at home. I recently talked with my partner about how many movies and tv shows aimed at younger girls / teens depict freaking terrible relationships while labelling it 'true love' or 'soul mate' and I had a moment of 'well no wonder so many of my friends had terrible relationships at that age and thought that was normal' so yeah more healthy relationship in kids / teen media would be great
YES!!! I have been crying out to the universe for this for How are people supposed to develop healthy relationships if they don't have anything to model a healthy relationship after?
this is not an amazing healthy relationship. at the start of the first movie she bullied him both verbally and physically. she punched him multiple times for no reason. I wouldn't consider that an healthy relationship.
@@paulogaspar8295 Fair enough. Their relationship certainly didn't *start* healthy. But I think it did *develop* into a healthy relationship by the end of the series, and in some ways that may even make it better---it provides juxtaposition between what is healthy and what is not, so we can compare and see the difference for ourselves.
Can we just appreciate the fact that the saga ended when it needed? All the movies are just an improvement of the previous and amazing on their own at the same time. As a story teller, i hope to make something even remotely as beautiful as this 😭💖
Finally someone who has something positive to say about the ending! I agree, I think it worked well, and was one of the few moments I legit choked up at the movies.

This is just their characters in the movies, the three tv shows, especially the six seasons of Race to the Edge have IMO, some of the best moments in their relationship. Look up their proposal scene, it's the most heart-warming scene. Hiccup gives Astrid the same betrothal necklace Stoick gave to Valka, telling her she is part of his family, she always has been and he hopes she always will be. He thinks she doesn't like it, she tells him it's perfect, but she couldn't find a gift good enough for him. He cuts her off and tells her, that the only gift he needs, is her, being with him is the only gift he needs.
There's two things that really make them perhaps the most well-developed animated couple of all time: 1. You see their relationship actually grow through all the shows that came between the first and second movies. You can see all of their romance, their loyalty, their spats and arguments, all of it...and you see how they work through them. People sometimes think the perfect relationship is one where you don't have disagreements, but it's really one where you don't let your disagreements hinder your relationship with each other. 2. You get to see this relationship from its very beginning to ultimate consummation. Not just the kiss, but the blossoming relationship, the moment they make it official, years of them being together, their wedding, and their kids. And through it all, they never, ever stop giving affirmations of love, whether through words or actions. They still give each other looks, little kisses, Astrid still braids his hair years down the line. All of those little things, along with the big things they discussed in the video, really help keep up the notion that they truly do love each other.
Ugh yes. Everyone loves a good falling in love story, but it's so rare to see a healthy, mature relationship play out on screen for the long run. It's so beautiful.
99% agree, except that having kids is not the ultimate consumation and shouldn't be an expectation. It's not always desirable, not always possible, and not necessary for a long and loving soul-pairing.
@@emilymartin5418 I don't mean "ultimate" as in "the greatest possible consummation," I mean it like, "ultimately, they ended up consummating"...as in, it didn't end in just a kiss with a single shot of the wedding, roll credits. I also don't see kids as the end-all, be-all of relationships, I don't have kids, and most of my friends who don't have kids are just as happy as the ones who do.
@@CreepyBlackDude To each their own, I guess. For some people, having kids is special and is something they look forward to. I appreciate though how they share the parenting responsibilities, so while Hiccup looks after one child, Astrid looks after the other, and they both help out with the ship.
I remember going to see HTTYD 3 in theaters. It hits so much harder when you’re grown. Every child in that theatre was fine, but 2/3 of the adults, including me, were crying messes. I’d lost my childhood pet two years previously, and that ending hit hard; both the loss and the reunification. I ended up sobbing my eyeballs out because all the grief came rushing back. The child sitting next to me was very confused.
I love Toothless' reaction on the boat. We know from the first film that he doesn't kill without reason, so he's obviously not gonna blast the Haddocks. He *recognises Hiccup's voice.* He uses that as incentive to investigate further, and is more concerned because he knows the voice but the face doesn't match. You see this with animals all the time. Many of them are driven by scent, so man was utterly fucking confused. The fact he immediately gives Hiccup kisses and sniffs the beard as if you see what was this mask is precious. What a sweet friendship.
The HTTYD series is my absolute favourite trilogy of all time. I could go on forever about the musical scores, story, animation character development and the relationships between all of them. Great video as always internet dads ❤
Honestly, I recognize similarities between Hiccup and Astrid, and my sister and her husband. It makes my heart happy knowing that those two will probably have a lasting relationship. They were practically already married in every way but law until early October this year. They are perfect for each other. I can only hope that I will be as lucky when I'm ready to start seeking a relationship.
“there’s a strength in her that gives him strength” i like that a lot. sometimes our strength comes from others and sometimes it comes from within ourselves. it’s important to share our internal strength with others when they need it. sometimes we can be support and sometimes we can be in need of support. communication and checking in with each other is how we stay safe, loved, and appreciated
I love the fact that you don't limit "healthy relationship" to romantic relationships, because my best friend and I, not a romantic pair, check all the boxes. I do want to add under "being encouraging and supportive" that one of my favorite things about my relationship with my best friend is that we do that behind each other's backs too. We stand up for each other when the other isn't watching, and we love to brag on each other's wins.
Thank you guys ❤ I was shouting ABSOLUTELY DAMN STRAIGHT when Alan said ANYTHING about Powell and the score, its a heart bursting, soul freeing work of art as well as the animators being so so talented make these movies worthy of legendary status. I will now be watching all three movies for the 13000th time and crying my eyes out 😭❤️
I feel completely the same way!! The world of HTTYD and the score are absolute masterpieces! But I have to say, you are incredibly brave. I have not been able to watch the third movie a second time, despite watching the first two movies and the shows more times than I can count. That third movie broke my heart in ways that I can only handle once in a lifetime....
@@s-f318 funnily enough out of all of them I've watched the first two a million times but the third I've only watched twice and the second time was only recently after it had been a while and I was brave enough to watch it! It broke me too haha I cried the whole way through knowing what was coming 😭 the only way I get through it is knowing that they do get to see each other sometimes and I like to think that their descendents would keep the friendship going 😭
I love that Alan is man enough to cry without apologizing. If i hear another man apologize for doing something as human as expressing emotion through tears, I'm gonna scream. Cry on Alan! Cry on my friend.
The beauty of this is: there's a tv series that showcase their growth as a couple even more (tv series is set in between the movies), which makes them even more couple goals! Great episode Cinema Therapy!
On a serious note, I have been in recovery from a deeply abusive relationship for the last year, and it gets really hard sometimes. When things get heavy, or it feels like it would be easier to turn my back on healing and embrace the old, familiar, toxic patterns, CT always seems to drop a video that speaks perfectly to that struggle. Thank you, Internet Dads (and John Powell, like WHAT a fricken score 😭), for reminding me once again that a healthy, loving relationship is worth fighting and striving for - you help shine a light on all that is good and worthy in this world.
I’m so glad that little child me decided this franchise was going to be the staple of our childhood. Not only does it have great animation, music, and plot, but it showed me from a young age what a healthy relationship looked like
something I've always also liked(but could be considered circumstantial) is that Astrid's dragon is not a female Night Fury. regardless of the possibility that they had planned a film in which a female appears, the fact that they gave Astrid so much personality and agency so as not to be seen just as Hiccup's girlfriend, made entirely to be complementary to him specifically, is great. these two people are not mirror images of each other.
I agree! When I saw the trailer for the third movie I really did expect them to make Astrid ride the female. Really glad they didn't, it would be too cliche and make her Hickups side chick instead if a character of her own. Her strength is not represented through her dragon, and it doesn't need to be
One thing I noticed is that in a lot of those clips, Astrid hears what Hiccup says about a situation and says something like, "What do we do now?" , "What are you going to do?", or "What's the next step?", prompting him out of just the thinking stage or his initial reaction to something and forcing him to focus on the end goal, whatever that is. And it also lets him know that she supports him. Him having someone believe in him is necessary for the plot, of course, as well as his own growth as a character. But it doesn't feel like Astrid was forced into that for the plot; rather, it felt like just the natural thing for her character to do. I've only seen the first HTTYD movie, but now it looks like I'll have to watch the rest, not just for the score, but for Hiccup and Astrid as well.
I don’t have the timestamp, but it’s just all building on the idea they brought up of, Hiccup is very good at solving problems. It’s one of his biggest strong suits. So when Hiccup is down and doesn’t know what to do, Astrid doesn’t start trying to come up with solutions. She tries to reframe the situation so that he has a problem to solve. She puts him in a situation where he gets to do what he’s good at. It’s very beautiful.
This episode actually gave me an insight on my ex. He was (allegedly) a narcissist, and he could never take any amount of teasing. Not even a bit. All of it, even safe, harmless, little affectionate things were an insult to him, and now I see why - because it never meant love for him; it was a threat to his fragile image of himself, that he could not power by this inner sense of value. Stil an a-hole though due to choosing to ignore the signs and gaslight everyone, but an understandable a-hole now
2:53 Something I've always thought was that Hiccup took a fair amount of time to learn and define his relationship with Toothless and had to do that alone because he decided it was worth it, and Astrid took less time to do so because she had someone who'd already figured the basics out and could show her the ropes. I love the line "She [shifts perspective] pretty quickly when she sees what he sees" because that's absolutely it; Astrid doesn't take long because the groundwork has been laid out already as a guide for the wildly unfamiliar.
These movies are a prime example of why we as humans NEED stories. Even just seeing the visuals or hearing the music makes me overflow with positive emotions
I absolutely adore Hiccstrid, they are one of the best on-screen couples ever. I love their arc as a couple and to see them in the TV show watching them grow as people realizing that they love each other, and then finally getting together is so wholesome! Would definitely recommend Defenders/riders of berk and Race to the Edge for any fans of the trilogy who haven't seen those shows!
It’s a ton of content, but the tv show Dreamworks: Dragons actually shows how Hiccup and Astrid’s relationship evolves into a romantic one, and how they handle that change. At the very least watch their first (proper) kiss scene; it is so beautiful! I could write an essay on how amazing their relationship is depicted, with real ups and downs. It’s the reason I think Hiccup and Astrid are the best movie couple!
I'm so happy you guys made another HTTYD episode. I discovered this channel through the previous one and it has been such a big help. Thank you for the amazing content in these past few years 🙏
Yes yes yesssss!! Hiccstrid are my absolute favorite power couple in all media. They have such a depth and maturity through the series, and a lot of that character development was even worked on throughout the tv show until the very end. Thank you for doing this ❤ Also Alan, the heck was that Gollum impersonating Astrid impersonating Hiccup impersonation? 🫠🤣
I think my favorite thing about them is how they are both so incredibly gentle yet firm with each other. Astrid has no problem showing kindness and warmth to Hiccup, but at the same time she never shied away from being direct and clear with what he needed, be that support or giving him a path. And the same goes for Hiccup. He was more than happy to be openly goofy and receiving towards her at almost every turn, but he helped to push her towards change and new experiences she wouldn't have ever considered without him.
So as a Berklee grad who majored in production and composition, I just want to confirm everything said here about John Powell and this score. Its perfect. Absolutely perfect. He took a simple melody, and layered it, and layered it, and layered over and over. It is so full but memorable. I honestly don't think it can ever be topped.
I am completely with Alan on this. John Powell is a genius and the HTTYD ost is beautifully simple yet intricately woven through the whole film and has become so integral to the emotion and personality of it. It will forever be my favorite movie soundtrack and Test Drive will never cease to give me goosebumps
I know you were mainly covering the movies. Yet, one of my favorite scenes in Riders of Berk is when Hiccup gets cocky, beating Snotlout in a race, and Astrid pushes Hiccup to be a better person without resorting to anger.
I LOVED how in HTTYD 2, right before they meet Eret Son of Eret and they come around the corner to see the fort smashed by ice from the Bewilderbeast, when Hiccup turns back, he tells her to "Stay close" instead of telling her to go home because it might not be safe. This shows that he trusts her and her abilities to stay alive, and he is not trying to control her or her actions. There is so much trust and respect between them.
I remember when I saw their wedding I originally thought about changing my ideas to a viking wedding. Their outfits were stunning, and complimentary. I always looked up to this relationship, the communication was unlike most others I've seen in media. It's so natural. The way she teases him, the way he listens to her. They are a unit, and it is beautiful.
I'm not going to lie but I do love Astrid's 'jock' persona with Hiccup's more nerdy side. It's cute to see the different way they express their affection to each other
I love this movie couple, and I especially adore that their relationship was never a source of drama or conflict for the plot. It was always a steady thing that they both valued and cared for
THANK YOU!!! This is my favorite animated movie series and this is one of the reasons! They’re literally so amazing and it’s really refreshing to see films “for kids” demonstrating healthy relationships!
22:35 they don't really show it as much in the movies, but in the show Astrid has a similar bond with Stormfly to Hiccup and Toothless, I absolutely love how they just have Stormfly casually show up between scenes and they don't even need to explain or show how she got there at all, it's all just implied Toothless immediately took Astrid to her dragon and Stormfly instantly remembered her the same way Toothless remembered Hiccup.
I want to say how proud I am of Alan. Back when they did the react to the first How to Train Your Dragon, he ascribed all of the work to animators. It's hard as an animator to get recognition for your work just because there are so many for any given film or show and the audience never sees their faces. But when you're doing one of the other jobs that goes into feature animation or visual effects it seems like no one cares to even recognize those jobs and those artists are so talented and important. Hearing Alan give credit to modelers, lighters, layout artists, etc is refreshing and I hope the people in those positions appreciate the acknowledgement. Good job Alan.
Side note on Alan's comment at 13:30, as an animator this scene bugs the crap out of me because it's largely mocap and it looks like it. This shot reminds me of the Tin Tin movie. But this film used a lot of mocap for the human characters then animators would work on top of that. The characters have always looked stiff, there isn't enough overlap and secondary movement, and the weight always feels off. I agree the performance is good but America Ferrera was on a stage with Jay Baruchel for this. Ok, rant over.
This is great, and I love Hiccup and Astrid SO MUCH. I do wish though that you had shown some examples of Hiccup supporting Astrid rather than just examples of her supporting him. Too often in movies the relationship is very one-sided with the female role being one of support for whatever goals and struggles the male-coded character is going through. It would be great to see more balance.
You get more of the other side in the TV serieses, I think. (I've only seen "Dragons: Race to the Edge", but there's a good bunch where Hiccup supports Astrid in there, so I'd guess there's more in the other, too.)
While this is true im actually struggling to think of scenes. Immediately im thinking of daggur attacking berk and almost killing astrids parents and destroying their house, then hiccup is extra supportive. oo Blindsided is another good example (astrid loses her eyesight and hiccup has to support her while allowing her to risk her safety by riding with them). Theres plenty of others but I guess i can only think of 2 right now.@@eliabeck689
Yes thank you!!!!! Astrid is a strong female character done right and I'm here for it. I'm going to name my first daughter after Astrid :) I grew up with the HTTYD franchise and The Hidden World had me bawling my eyes out in the theater. Hiccup letting Toothless go was a HUGE moment not just for the characters but to everyone who had followed the franchise from the beginning. It was a bittersweet moment but a necessity
She's the example of how being caring and kind doesn't make someone weak and helpless. She could be burned with battery acid and horrifically scarred, and people would still find her attractive because she's so kind and compassionate, and uses her beauty to be like that.
@@The-Mask021 I mean patriarchy tends to be oppressive towards women when it is done bad and plenty of times it was done bad. The reason astrid is believable is because the a lot of women in viking societies exercised more rights than your typical medieval european women and weren't villified for it (in contrast, unmarried single women in the victorian era exercised more rights than married women and were villified for it).
@@The-Mask021 "when being strong becomes too much for a lot of women" what exactly are you talking about? what is "being strong" in this context? Because to me it sounds like you're blaming women for not being "strong enough" when they take issue with the patriarchy and speak up for women's rights.
@nightshadewinter6915 I agree with you, Astrid Is a really cool name! My sister is called Astrid, unfortunately she's not such a badass as HTTYD's Astrid... The name means "beloved by the Aesir", who were some of the Old Norse gods, if you want some insight on the meaning...best of luck for your life!
@@The-Mask021 I think that's a misinterpretation of Gloria's complaint. Her problem is that women are _expected_ to be strong, because if they're not then they're not trying hard enough, but they shouldn't be _too_ strong or they're being bossy and trying too hard. She wasn't taking issue with the struggles of being strong, but with society's constant contradictory expectations regarding strength.
It's a running gag among my in-laws that I hate romance and my MIL calls me a killjoy for it. I keep telling them that if more romances were like Hiccup and Astrid or the O'Connells and less like The Notebook or Ross and Rachel, I'd like the genre a lot more.
So true I usually tell others myself that I dislike romance but I don’t really when the relationship feels natural and the characters actually have mutual respect towards the other, being genuinely sweet and affectionate isn’t a bad addition either lol It’s perhaps useless coming from a stranger but I wouldn’t call you a killjoy for it I would say you are just perceptive to the underlying toxicity of certain fictional relationships others don’t take note of
@ilmatuka816 lol No worries, I'll happily take the killjoy title from someone who unironically thinks Grease is one of the greatest romances in pop culture history. She's a very sweet woman in desperate need of therapy.
Yeah, HiccStrid was the first (and the only for a while) couple I ever shipped. So many stories just stick the two main leads together just bc "that's what you're supposed to do," but not every platonic pairing HAS to end up as a freaking romance
It’s also not just the three movies. The show Dragon’s Edge perfectly meshes the movie together and really shows how naturally they’re relationship grew and developed. Full of respect and support for each other.
Toothless is showing irritation when he launches from the tree in that first flight clip, but that glance back whilst spinning is as if he is waiting for Astrid to say sorry and move closer to Hiccup. Almost as if he is trying to bring them together at such an early part of the first film. After Hiccup has worked to become friends with him, Toothless is seeing something in her beyond the usual Viking/Dragon combat bias. Maybe he has a sense of how great a couple they will become. There is soo many little subtle things dotted throughout all three movies that brings them from great to awesome films.
Yeah I love his little smile when she squeezes hiccup and starts just saying I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry. And then toothless start flying less like a maniac LOL
The HTTYD tv series are also so so good, especially at continuing to show off how well-matched Hiccup and Astrid are. The series is better than it has any right to be, lol; the score holds up, the jokes consistently land (even the sick burns the gang is trading around with each other, lol), and the character development fits seemlessly into what's happening in the movies. 10/10 recommend everyone who loves HTTYD to watch. It's not just a cash-grab, it's for real a great series. Riders of Berk followed by Race to the Edge. Check them out if you haven't yet!
I love how much you guys always point out how both sides are doing a great job! Hearing so much respect for Astrid was so refreshing because a lot of analyses tend to focus more on Hiccup. Thank you!
I've always loved how Astrid goes from playful teasing to serious listening after Hiccup expresses that he needs her to listen. I really appreciate that Hiccup stated what he needed from her directly and she listened. I've had too many people expect that I intuitively knew what they were trying to say without them actually saying it. It ends up being very frustrating for both parties. 😞
What I love about this story...is everything! Hiccup and Astrid relationships are so solid. They were loving, supporting and trusting each other even in the darkest and scariest moments they've had. This couple is one of the things that makes this story so wonderful. They're like a blueprint for a healthy love. I was so happy to watch this episode and I think I need to rewatch this trilogy once again. Oh, and the score...is absolutely mesmerizing!
so I met someone and we are totally into vikings and dragons. the first sentence in this episode today gave me the courage to ask him out on our first date....ON HIS BIRTHDAY.....and my first date since my divorce earlier this year. Thank you Cinema Dads @CinemaTherapyShow You are a gift to this world.
People in all kind of relationships fight about three underlying key groups of themes : -Power and control -Closeness and care -Respect and recognition Healthy relationships follow a circle of harmony, disharmony and repair.
I totally get it Alan, I cry at a score alone sometimes and How to Train your dragon is one of the bests ever. Astrid and Hiccup are couple goals! Thanks for sharing.
Over the years this three movies (plus the Netflix Series) have become one of the most beloved and rooted deep in my heart. Their relationship, the bonding between all the characters, every single moment of the score, all has fulled my life to be greater, to be more loving, more curious, more bold, to create and be myself even when the whole world (or at least your whole community) tells you otherwise. And, lastly, the scene from the first movie, when Astrid encourage him to go after Stoic, ooooh boy, that gets me every time. Love y'all
I love when his mother goes "you should help him realize it", Astrid as you said seems going to give an heart talk, and instead it's like, "it m's true that he depends from Toothless too much, but what can I do to make him better? Help him get Toothless back" It's like, at the phylosophyical aspect will go there lately, but now this is the swifter way to help him..!
I love the commentary on the playful teasing. I do this with my partner all the time. We tease and playfully bully each other all the time. Every time we tease we also spend lifting each other up too. I'm his number 1 cheerleader, encouraging him with his art, listening to him so he feels heard, allow him to feel safe to feel his emotions. He is my safe space, my anchor when I'm off the deep end. He's calm, I'm crazy, he's introverted, I'm a social butterfly, he's soft and gentle and I'm a tough and stubborn. We balance each other and lift up each other. Kinda like Astrid and Hiccup.
This not only gave me a greater appreciation for one my favorite movie franchises but also made me appreciate the sheer talent and skill of John Powell
When I think of healthy relationships from animation movies, I always think of Moses and Tzipporah from The Prince of Egypt. They are amazing couple goals in my opinion, especially when you consider what a terrible start their relationship was off to in the beginning!
A while back, I started wondering if Rodger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit are relationship goals, and I would still like to see a video talking about it. Also, I still want see a video rating movie friendships from so toxic that you wonder why these people are still associating with each other to so healthy everyone in the relationship is made better by their relationship with each other.
So I’m new to all this content and have been binging a ton of your videos. Let me just say, THANK YOU for not immediately labeling anything animated as a ‘kids movie’. As a cartoonist and animation fan, hearing people say that always annoys me because it’s usually followed up by the media in question not being taken seriously. As if a cartoon can’t have anything profound or intelligent to say. So to see you two watch stuff like Kung Fu Panda or this and act like they’re on par with all other films? THANK YOU!!
“One of you has to anchor while the other is struggling” made me reflect on the dynamic between the characters relationship of Moon Dong-eun & Joo Yeo-jeong. It’s more of a darker turn on that quote by end of season 2.
There's a real sense of growth and maturity when someone can tease you about the way your voice sounds, or your goofing off, and you can go "yeah, that's me. I do that." It's not a weakness, or a fault, it's just a part of you. Then it's easier to say "ya know, I was a jerk with the way I was in the past. I know that hurt and I'm sorry." and if they say "yeah you were", it's a moment to talk and listen and not be defensive.
One of my favorite things about the HTTYD movies is how emotional they make me. I saw the third one in theaters, and was sobbing for the last half. The credit's song was (I think) Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran, and man, that gave me ALL the feels. My dream of becoming a screenwriter has been majorly fueled by this trio of spectacular movies, and of course, by you guys. ❤
@@devinreis5811 All good things unfortunately must come to an end, it's just a fact of life. Otherwise, you get series that keep pumping out endless cash grab sequels, and movies like Toy Story 4 that ruin a perfect ending.
as someone who always felt unfit for a healthy relationship because of my gritty personality, thank you for this episode. my partner is an absolute softball and it's hard even for myself to discern if i'm being hurtful or if i'm giving him the rock solid support and opinions my partner needs to be pushed foward.
IMHO, don't belittle his contributions or opinions. You can give your opinion and disagree but rightfully or not, you need to accept his ways and freedoms too. It's not necessarily have to need to push forwards. Sometimes people are comfortable where they are and it's ok.
One of my favourite trilogies in my life. Hiccstrid are so cute as couple and so supportive to each other. Only Hiccup and Toothless top them (and it isn't a romantic relationship).
@@literallyjustthings9227 I think the KFP trilogy (the first 3, not the 4th one) is great in its own way, but KFP 3 kinda gives me Return of the Jedi vibes when it could have used a darker tone, especially coming off the masterpiece that is KFP 2

The score and specific character themes, much like Hiccup and Astrid, are married in the healthiest and most beautiful relationship.
Astrid and Hiccup are definitely one of the strongest couples to come out of a Kids' movie, and aren't toxic. I love that their opposing personalities complement each other perfectly, and she admits that she adores his sensitive side.
Yes!!
I have to say it was a real pleasant surprise with how respectful the two were with each other. Even before they relationship started to a degree.
Astrid was quite toxic, she hit him, yelled at him all because he was weak in her eyes. She changed, but she defo was toxic towards him before he impressed her, "fine Ill admit it, this is pretty cool"
Wouldnt consider a movie about genocide kid oriented more kid friendly. Oriented more to teens.
I like how it's a gradual and organic relationship, not three days.
We need more depictions of relationships like this - no toxicity, good communication, support and a healthy base of friendship.
Wonderful movies :)
I love the underlying friendship astrid and hiccup has with their romantic relationship
@@The-Mask021
May I remind you which sex has historically been the one to possess more power/ control over the other in straight relationships? It is hypocritical and cowardly to want to be the dominant partner and yet blame others when you abuse that power. Great power comes great responsibility and all that.
o.o
@@The-Mask021what are you even talking about?
I have no idea where these statements came from, because they sure as heck they didn't come from Cinema's Therapy videos.
Yo homie @@J-manli just asking, what did "The-Mask021" comment about?
Another small detail that I love is when she lands as he's working on the map, after she finishes joking and he starts telling his story, she immediately starts working on his map, and he just lets her. It shows not only how in tune she is with his hobby to pick it up and continue where he left off without having to say anything or ask what he wants, but how much he trusts her to not even glance down or give her advice as she starts marking on his life's work (or at least his adult life). She knows he wants to make the map and he knows that she'll do a good job without his input. It's small but it's something I've always wanted in my own relationship.
True. You could honestly make an entire video about the strength of their relationship based on that one scene.
I never realized this! Such a beautiful detail!
Add:
I went and looked for that episode (called Thawfest). Here's the quote from Astrid:
"You know what I always liked about you, Hiccup? You were always a gracious loser. Who knew you'd be a lousy winner?"
Because at the time Hiccup was winning over Snotlout for the first time in forever (because of the added dragon events in the Thawfest games) and it was kind of getting to his head.
I agree with you
It’s improv put into the animation
Which of course is the definition of organic in acting and then out into animation
THATS SO CUTE! AAAAAH!
We need animated works to get their voice actors in the booth together more often, because you get so much gold like this when it happens.
Valka (Hiccup's mother) Is a really cool character too
Valka is the name of Hiccup's mother.
Valka
So glad you did this video! Astrid and Hiccup's relationship is honestly one of the healthiest I've seen in animation as a whole.
thats why I question why fanfic writers break them up
I love that they don't start from a shitty place and then "fix" each other. They're just solid from the outset. I feel like a lot of healthy relationships in movies/TV start from an unhealthy place so they have an arc, but it does imply that a bad relationship is just a little character growth away from being a healthy one. And that gets dangerous quickly.
@@ellevictor474 it's probably for the ✨drama✨

Yes! We need more romance with hand holding and forehead kisses.
When you first see his dad and his mom meet again, Stoic initiates the physical contact then as well. He’s gentle and affectionate. I think we can infer thy stoic might have drilled certain ideal on how to treat a lady into hiccup from a young age.
@@doomcheeks
Ikr !
at first i thought u were talking about allen n john 😂😂😂

@@tamarasmith9060 Great example of good mother/mother-in-law behavior. loved it.
!!
Yeees and their dancing scene is still perhaps one of my absolute favorite scenes from the second movie, it brings so much joy to me and it’s so short it’s almost torture how we didn’t get to see more of them together. Absolutely great couples all around in the httyd universe
Same ♥
Eh I guess I’m in the minority because I didn’t like that she essentially faked her death and left him grieving like that.
Hope you're good at axes too lol!!! Congrats for the couple ♡

Truth. And no lie, forever bitter that they gave the Oscar for Best Original Score that year to 'The Social Network' over HTTYD. HTTYD's soundtrack literally carried _whole scenes_ and is just so damn emotionally powerful.

HE DIDN'T WIN ANYTHING FOR THESE MASTERPIECES?!?!?
@@anneblackwood9013 I know, right? The three scores got a few small nods, and I think all three were at least nominated for the Academy Award for best original score, but they won none of them. One of the great injustices in film of the decade of the 2010s in my opinion for sure

What a beautiful comment ❤
Talking about the score:
Hiccup’s theme uses a lot of high pitched instruments, while Toothless’s theme uses a lot of low pitched instruments, and when combined, they balance each other out and fit in PERFECTLY.
The true couple goals
The score becomes EVEN BETTER once you notice how HIccup's and Toothless' scores come together as well when they learn how to work together in that flying learning scene
I'm now adding that to the reasons I love this score
That must have been part of how technically challenging it is. It's not trivial to make two themes work together, and it's genius to make two compelling standalone themes work together
Oh man, the Lord of the Rings had a really hard time, yet managed to perfect it as well
One additional note to this song (the name is btw. "Test Drive"), is that before they learn to fly together, after their fall, the Toothless themes plays a few times and the Hiccup theme has some "hiccups" before both are played at the same time. Also the time Hiccups throws away the cheat-sheet and both thrust in each other.
The score is amazing.
Why you doing this to me 😫
*imediately goes listen ro the score and cry*
the moment in 7:49 is just amazing. Hiccup turining around, saying "yes", the emotional shift in Astrid's face from disbelief to realising that this is actually important to him to pragmatism, Hiccup turning away in a mix of hurt and fear of Toothless and Astrid asking "then what do we do?"
This is so great.
True! I hadn't noticed that before.
That “okay, what do we do” is EVERYTHING! I love seeing that trust and understanding from her, it’s so nice to see that represented even if it’s in an animated movie about dragons
Your take on Astrid’s character reminded me of this:
We’ve been taught that a strong character means someone who is loud, cold, opinionated, and could potentially be mean or aggressive.

As someone who has wanted an Astrid in my life ever since I saw that scene in the first movie when Hiccup was in his darkest hour, thank you for aspiring to be like Astrid.
The scene:
Astrid: (Shakes head a little) It's a mess!
Robin truly believes he's fighting Slade and Slade is winning..."
@elyalvarz
You're completely correct!
Yess so realistic
there was a tid bit that the writers revealed that Hiccup doesn't like the braids...but keeps them in because Astrid loves to do them.

@@paulogaspar8295 Fair enough. Their relationship certainly didn't *start* healthy.
There's two things that really make them perhaps the most well-developed animated couple of all time:
I love your summary of why this is such an awesome modeling of a great way to be in relationship! So well described!
Dragons can’t kiss!
The HTTYD series is my absolute favourite trilogy of all time. I could go on forever about the musical scores, story, animation character development and the relationships between all of them. Great video as always internet dads ❤
Thanks for watching! 😊
Agreed
I wish I could like this comment a thousand more times... :(
I love the fact that you don't limit "healthy relationship" to romantic relationships, because my best friend and I, not a romantic pair, check all the boxes. I do want to add under "being encouraging and supportive" that one of my favorite things about my relationship with my best friend is that we do that behind each other's backs too. We stand up for each other when the other isn't watching, and we love to brag on each other's wins.
My platonic best friend and roomie do, too, and I agree with you that it's nice having people expand "healthy relationships" beyond just romantic!
Astrid was one of my OGs for childhood crushes, glad to her and Hiccup being put into the category of couple-goals. They truly deserve it 🙏
Amen to that bro 🎉
Hiccup was one of mine lol. Growing up I think it's both of them now though XD
I'm proud of you. It's not easy to brave the reality of standing firmly on your value, but it's worth it.
I’m so glad that little child me decided this franchise was going to be the staple of our childhood. Not only does it have great animation, music, and plot, but it showed me from a young age what a healthy relationship looked like
something I've always also liked(but could be considered circumstantial) is that Astrid's dragon is not a female Night Fury.
regardless of the possibility that they had planned a film in which a female appears, the fact that they gave Astrid so much personality and agency so as not to be seen just as Hiccup's girlfriend, made entirely to be complementary to him specifically, is great.
these two people are not mirror images of each other.
omg i didn't even realize that! But I love it!
So how was it did you like the other movies
@@mikejones774 I've only seen the second one so far but I thought it was a really sweet movie!
Stil an a-hole though due to choosing to ignore the signs and gaslight everyone, but an understandable a-hole now
They are definitely one of the best Dreamworks couples, very sweet and realistic ❤
A very interesting writing detail is how before the flight Astrid calls Toothless a "thing", but after that she uses pronouns.
Thank you for the amazing content in these past few years 🙏
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
It was always a steady thing that they both valued and cared for
THIS. I hate when writers resort to adding unnecessary toxic dynamics into relationships to "spice things up" or whatever
I second (third?) both of the above comments! We need more examples of healthy relationships in media!
The only time they did this was in mi amore wing…but it’s so great…
“so…you wanna go deliver some scrap metal?”
I'm going to name my first daughter after Astrid :)
I grew up with the HTTYD franchise and The Hidden World had me bawling my eyes out in the theater.
So true I usually tell others myself that I dislike romance but I don’t really when the relationship feels natural and the characters actually have mutual respect towards the other, being genuinely sweet and affectionate isn’t a bad addition either lol
It’s perhaps useless coming from a stranger but I wouldn’t call you a killjoy for it I would say you are just perceptive to the underlying toxicity of certain fictional relationships others don’t take note of
@ilmatuka816 lol No worries, I'll happily take the killjoy title from someone who unironically thinks Grease is one of the greatest romances in pop culture history. She's a very sweet woman in desperate need of therapy.
@@raptor_reddOof, that is definitely a take, I’ll give her that.
Yeah, HiccStrid was the first (and the only for a while) couple I ever shipped. So many stories just stick the two main leads together just bc "that's what you're supposed to do," but not every platonic pairing HAS to end up as a freaking romance
Totally with you there! Most romance stories are ugh
It’s also not just the three movies. The show Dragon’s Edge perfectly meshes the movie together and really shows how naturally they’re relationship grew and developed. Full of respect and support for each other.
This damn soundtrack. I could be anywhere, doing anything, and the tears would still be immediate if I heard it playing.
I hope the creators of these movies watch these videos. They deserve all of the compliments you guys give them.
Good luck my dude!

ALSO I'M SO PROUD OF YOU
THIS IS THE VIDEO I ASKED FOR ON INSTAGRAM AND THEY SAID IT WAS ON THEIR LIST OF IDEAS AAAAAH IM SO EXCITED TO WATCH!!!!!!
People in all kind of relationships fight about three underlying key groups of themes :
-Power and control
-Closeness and care
-Respect and recognition
Healthy relationships follow a circle of harmony, disharmony and repair.
I totally get it Alan, I cry at a score alone sometimes and How to Train your dragon is one of the bests ever. Astrid and Hiccup are couple goals! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This not only gave me a greater appreciation for one my favorite movie franchises but also made me appreciate the sheer talent and skill of John Powell
the hiccup impression at 23:30 was spot on
When I think of healthy relationships from animation movies, I always think of Moses and Tzipporah from The Prince of Egypt.
"He's my funny bunny" is one of the most quotable lines.
THANK YOU!!
We LOVE animated films! Welcome aboard and we're glad you're enjoying the channel!
May every medium of communication allow such wonderful modeling and profound messages that inspire us all.
The credit song is Together from Afar by Jonsi. The Ed Sheeran song just be used in the first trailer.
Giant reptilian cats aside, when the franchise ended, I sobbed. It's one of those good things that you don't want to come to an end.
This and Kung-fu Panda are both perfect trilogies.
I call them assup
I’m so torn between which one I like better😫
@@literallyjustthings9227 I think the KFP trilogy (the first 3, not the 4th one) is great in its own way, but KFP 3 kinda gives me Return of the Jedi vibes when it could have used a darker tone, especially coming off the masterpiece that is KFP 2
I have the same feeling
My cousin played the score for her senior band about 3 years ago or so I believe. They played a medly of the score and it sounded absolutely amazing! I was in aw sitting in the theatre and loved every second of their performance.
