push button to manual floor shift transfer case conversion 1998 Chevy k1500

  • converting electric push button 4x4 to a manual floor shifter without changing the transfer case or doing any kind of wiring, all mechanical.
    The reason for doing this is because the electric motor on the transfer case quit working and the 4x4 switch in the cab would not always work.
    It was cheaper to convert the truck with components that shouldn't ever go bad or wear out than to just replace the overpriced chinese electrical components.
    This truck is a 98 k1500 with a 5.7, 4L60E, and an Np243c t-case. it is also a short cab.
    other information: the front electric axle actuator does not work if the electric motor on the t-case is not plugged in, (at least ours did not seem to) this is why we also needed to convert the front axle actuator to a manual setup. ( the posi-lock kit)
    The scrap plate that holds the blue shift lever from falling off the transfer case is just a hair away from touching the peg that sticks out of the transfer case, (just used some washers)
    This whole project cost about $180, we paid $30 for the stock chevy shift linkage at a junkyard and used hardware and some bar stock we had laying around to create the linkage, the posi-lock kit was about $150 off summit racing. The cost of the electric motor and the 4x4 dash switch is around 180-210 depending on where you get them, yes it would have been easier to just replace those components but the manual floor shifter should outlast the truck.
    does anyone else put mashed potatoes on garlic bread

    At about the 7:28 mark it shows the linkage underneath the truck and you say the plate bolted into two of the encoder motor holes is holding the shift arm onto the transfer case output shaft. Is the plate just snugged up against the output shaft using washers for the correct spacing?

    I have a transfer case not engaging with the encoder motor for some reason, yet I get no blinking light 'error' on the 4x4 push buttons. I took the encoder motor off and noticed that I could manually lock in the transfer case with a wrench. I almost bought the Posilock but instead rigged up a carburetor cable under the hood that I lock in whenever I think I might need it. My '98 Blazer is at the point where I'm going to put a lever on because it's done nothing but let me down when I really needed 4x4. The engineers that came up with that terribad combination vacuum/electrical 4x4 system should be court martialed and shot. (I'm sure it made GM tons of $ from clueless fairer sex customers which is probably why that system was put in to begin with.)

    Mine the transfer case got smashed by whoever owned it before, so I might as well put in a np261 and put in a lever. What I'm wondering though is the screen on the dash says "service 4wd" every few seconds, do you know how to get rid of that? Thanks

    • @alecschauer9902
      @alecschauer9902 3 роки тому

      Either a sensor or an actuator is malfunctioning somewhere. To try and reset the light, there is a way that you can jump two of the contacts on the OBD port and perform a series of key cycles. This will clear out the memory in the transfer case control module. You can find other videos explaining this procedure for different vehicles.

    • @alecschauer9902
      @alecschauer9902 3 роки тому

      Thank you. If you're looking for an already manual option, the np241 will most likely work as long as things still bolt together however there are stronger options. Just search for things that will bolt up to your transmission/trans-transfer case adapter. There are quite a few options out there depending on whether you want a chain-driven or gear-driven transfer case. In our situation, we did not want to swap out the transfer case (because poor) which is why we created a linkage to replace the electronic actuators.

    How did you seal the hole in the floor? Did you use any sort of boot?

    • @goreerh
      @goreerh 2 роки тому

      The shifter assembly is a stock factory part. it seals the same way the factory installed ones do. it just has a rubber gasket that goes on one side and is squeezed between it and the floor. Water could still come in the slot the handle slides through just like every other truck that has one but at that point water would be coming in the doors

    • @alecschauer9902
      @alecschauer9902 2 роки тому +1

      In this case we did not use any kind of seal because I did not care. The assembly usually has some sort of seal, though, as well as the brush thing on the OEM cover plate depicted at 9:45.

    The neutral or selector position that doesn't do anything that you speak of that's the Auto 4 wheel

    • @alecschauer9902
      @alecschauer9902 2 роки тому

      Sir I assure you that the NP243C transfer case that is in this here truck does not have a 4-Auto position. That was an option on some later vehicles such as my 2001 Blazer, but the original electronic push-buttons that came in this 1998 K1500 only had 2-HI, 4-HI, and 4-LO. I could be wrong, but the majority of transfer cases that I have knowledge of usually have some sort of neutral position between the HI and LOW range for safety reasons. Because this T-case was never meant to be used with a manual shift lever, this "neutral" position simply felt a little hinky to me to the point where I would not be comfortable using it as a means of putting the vehicle in a neutral state.
      Also.... the grindy noises say no

    • @goreerh
      @goreerh 4 роки тому +2

      Nope, wrong. this truck was equipped with an electric solenoid on the front axle housing that worked in conjunction with an electric servo on the transfer case. Only when the servo on the transfer case had completed its shift, would A computer (The 4wd controll module) tell the solenoid on the front axle housing to engage. Because we removed the servo entirely, the computer would never see a completed shift and there for never tell the solenoid to actuate. The cable pull is manually and physically moving parts in the front housing. vacuum has nothing to do with the 4x4 on this 98 k1500. Not a thing.

      @@goreerh So if i swap my push button 243 with a manual 241, I'll have to use a cable to engage the 4wd along with the manual shifter? or can i just use the manual shifter?

    • @things7141
      @things7141  4 роки тому +1

      If your gonna swap your transfer case for a 241. Then just find a truck that has a manual linkage for a 241 and take all the electronics that control the front axle actuation. Theoretically you could integrate those into your truck and have a shifter that works like factory. If you don’t want to deal with all that Jazz just use the posi lock kit, it make shifting into 4x4 more of a process but it removes all the electronics that like to go bad.
