When To Use Overdrive On Chevy Truck Transmission

  • Here is how to use overdrive in a GM Chevrolet automatic transmission on a Chevy truck. On a Chevrolet truck, overdrive gear is only supposed to be used under light loads on relatively flat roads. If you are climbing steep hills, or if you are hauling a heavy load or pulling a trailer, then you should put your truck automatic transmission into third gear instead of overdrive. Only use overdrive for light driving conditions, and if you’re doing anything intense, put in third gear. If you learn how to properly use overdrive gear on your Chevrolet truck, then your transmission will last longer, and your truck will work better. The truck in this video is a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado Z 71 4 x 4. This video shows when to use overdrive in a truck.

    The reason the 4l60/700r4 4th gear is not to be used in those conditions mentioned is because there are less clutch packs and each one of the clutch plates is thinner and therefore the heat built up in the clutch plates from intense driving conditions is not easily conveyed to the transmission case and disapaited. 4th is literally just for cruising in not only the 4l60 but in all overdrive transmissions.

      THIS is what I suspected... but have heard NUMEROUS mechanics say otherwise. I'm just a dude with a mechanical-oriented mind who likes taking shit apart and then struggling to put it back together. But my 2000 F150 4x4 has Overdrive and it turns on AUTOMATICALLY when the vehicle is started (giving you all four gears)

    • @RyanWithAviators
      @RyanWithAviators Рік тому +3

      @@dubskulls9554 Certainly. As I mentioned, overdrive can and should be used for cruising speeds. Unless you're towing on the highway, you're not putting a lot of load on the engine and transmission. High load like towing or going up long mountain grades creates heat in the transmission. The more heat there is, the more the transmission fluid breaks down. The more it breaks down, the more it coats the internal parts of the trans. And so on...

    So...read your manual...I've had this debate several times. The following generation truck after yours has a very similar logic on when to use OD. When I'm towing/hauling heavy in my 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the 6.0 I always pull it down to "3" or "D" and keep it out of OD...as i have with the previous trucks I've owned with an automatic transmission.

    I had a 97 gm which I drove in overdrive all the time, even when pulling light loads......never had any trouble with the transmission and it went over 400 thousand kilometers. That being said, I do agree with the manufacturers request about driving it when towing. But I don't know why there would be a difference in driving it in overdrive as compared to 3rd gear if you're going slow enough that it would never reach overdrive anyway. In my opinion there's no difference, but I'm open to admitting I could be wrong.

    Use a good trans cooler, plus change the fluid and filter regularly, and they last a long time. My 1994 k1500 4x4 with the 4l60e came with a factory auxiliary trans and engine oil cooler(towing package) and I have never had an issue. I've also known many others that had good luck when they did the same. it's usually some idiot that never changes fluid and filter, tows in overdrive with no cooler that has issues then says they are bad transmissions.

    • @hoohoohoblin

    • @mikelovin7
      @mikelovin7 6 років тому +5

      Heat and poor maintenance is any automatics worst enemy. I learned that the hard way on a 400 turbo trans with no cooler along with no fluid and filter changes, and at 100,000 miles of hard towing/hauling it started to slip and had to be rebuilt. The fluid was black and really stunk like burnt oil. It was MY fault, not the manufacturer. I hope this helps someone NOT make the same mistake I did. :)

They made a 4 Wheel Dr. version of the Astro for a little while, and you can get them pretty cheap. The truck is better for hauling our dirt bikes. I’ve put two dirt bikes in the van before, but you get a contact high from the gas smell while you’re driving out to the desert, And would probably die if you got into an accident.

      You can. Depending on how you interpret the manual, it might actually be better to do that. They recommend keeping it in third if you are pulling a trailer.

    • @jamesthefisherman1060
      @jamesthefisherman1060 6 років тому +12

      InjectorRick Constant upshifting and downshifting is bad on older vehicles with automatic transmissions and makes them more likely to fail. Shifting it into 3rd keeps the transmission from constantly changing between 3rd and 4th when towing.

      Well yeah. If it's hunting for gears, that's true. But tell that to my 16,000 lbs motorhome with a 4L80E. I keep it in overdrive even when towing 5,000 lbs of race car and trailer and it's 24 years old...lol

      It is a repetitive stress injury. Not sure if it’s from nose picking or other activities, but that finger doesn’t want to straighten out. It’s called trigger finger lock. I just need to stretch it out some, and not use the finger very much, and it will heal.
