been trying figure out why my audi a8 made that noise. 3 days of searching every where. its hard to describe it and here i thought it was my fuel filter/pump and go buy it too. only code i got was cam shaft position sensor. Thank you for this video, helped me save a lot more money and time. P.S. great attitude for having new disability. it always gets better as long as you keep looking up. i got 2 good arms and i cant change my timing belt and do a video .keep up the good work and thank you once again.
Great vid. I can only imagine how much fun it is working with one arm but hey your very lucky at that. I ride myself and have too many stories of injuries and friend deaths.
oh no! glad ur ok Brian. you're one of the good guys, dont need ya getting all busted up. Yea when i bought my subaru outback my belt had never been changed. had headgasket issues "of course! lol" but this was my greatest fear. dropping money then timing belt goes
Glad you are ok. Sounds like you are lucky to be here telling the story. That injury might bother you for a long time. I’ve fallen off of motorcycles 🏍 so I know how it feels.
Thank you! It was rough for about a year. Turns out my chiropractor found the bones were out of place. He put it back in and I learned to put it in myself and now it's 100% again. I hope you're doing well.
Hey bud, I've been watching your videos and I've learned some new stuff. Really appreciate the info since I'm doin wat I can on my 01 Dodge Ram 1500. I have a question: are the cv valves hard to pull out? I'm havin some difficulty.
Man I hope you get your arm fixed. Looks very disabling. I got my shoulder broke during birth. I cannot curl. I have struggled through life with my arm like this. But somehow I got by.
I had a 2003 Mitsu Galant 2.4l that broke a timing belt. I didn't even bother attempting to get it fixed because I read so many stories of those engines needing major work after that happens. Unfortunately I had the timing belt replaced when it was supposed to be changed with the hardware...the hydraulic tensioner seized up and shredded the belt. :(
Hey Brian, my 2001 Xterra would start, Sputter then shut off. It would stay on if I keep my foot on the gas. It’s throwing code p0340 and was told it could be the timing belt. So I replaced the whole damn thing myself, timing belt. Water pump and tensor. Now it won’t turn over at all. Everything is lined up TDC. Also I should mention, brand new FSU and Pump.
My guess would be that this is a non-interference engine - that's why he got away with the repeated cranking. There's very little or no chance that his valves would've all been closed at the point the belt gave up.
I was wondering the same thing. It must be non-interference type. Sometimes car doesn't do anything if it logs a fault code for timing sensors. Would be wise not to clear the code and keep cranking it. 😂
man i dont know what to say because that da da da at start is what mine does same which bought and i was told that t belt been changed but i was not sure. thanks.
tore the same muscle from the bone a year ago doing incline presses ( yes the weight cam back down ..and yes I felt it rip LOL ) ...18 month later ( I elected not to have surgery yet ) ..my shoulder hurts at times..but I do have to be careful when lifting weights for chest or shoulders ..I use higher reps ... now ..dont know what that will do to motocross riding ..I know my 1200 cc suzuki street bike it does not bother me
I have a 2.4l eclipse 5 speed and I think my belt broke. But when I felt it bogging down it didn't make any noise and I pushed the clutch in immediately. I downshift ed and it shifted fine and it was still bogging down and I just pushed the clutch in and pulled over. It is an interference motor but do you think the valves got damaged? It blows white smoke out of the intake and I was told it was because too much compression. Any thoughts are appreciated
@Stixxs-Do you have an owner's manual for this vehicle? It will tell you when timing belt is due. Converting it from belt to chain is going to be expensive. There is a a lot more to it then just putting on a chain and sprockets.
i have a 98 camry 3.0 v6 had to replace the timing belt marks on the back part of the crank line up at the dot on oil pump and both cams lined up with the marks on the back plate,it doesn't want to idle any ideas
Haha, had the exact same thing happen on an older Ford Escape a few weeks ago. Same symptoms, same chewed up belt. She's lucky it's a non-interference engine or else she'd be out a motor!
I have 2003 CTS 3.2L engine I change the serptine belt then driving last than 8 mile the car made a noise. I did pull over my friend came drove it about a half mile it stopped. The crank senor code came on is this the timing belt and or the valves bent; such I do timing belt and head job or replace engine. What do you think I should do
Lucky! When I bought my 99 Accord as soon as I learned it had a timing belt and was of an interference engine design I changed it right away. 144k, water pump was mint and belt was just a bit hard around the edges. Dang Hondas. Before that, I had a 2.0 non Ztec Escort....timing belt blew at 40mph. Low and behold, its was a non interference engine. Replaced timing belt and no problems what so ever. Ran like a top again.
9.9.15. I had a 1989 Ford ranger 2.3L with 258k miles on it ,for 22.5yrs, changed the timing belt twice. The last time it was starting to slap against the plastic cover! I replaced it for $6.95, a Gates belt! Ran sweet afterward. I also changed the tensioner bearing & the water pump. 💤
Nice. Liked that. I'm looking for help with this problem. Writeup below I've used on Nissan forums. I'm thinking my issue may be a failed hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Any ideas or experience you have is greatly appreciated! Hello all! This is my first Nissan Pathfinder. I have always wanted one since the late 1990s. It's a 1998 SE 3.3L, automatic transmission, 167,000 miles on it. I got it at an estate sale for $2,000. It has a loud knock or tap that happens part-time and so far it's not been resolved. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could point me to anything to check next, or describe if you had similar problems with yours. I've run the motor minimally...only to troubleshoot. Here's what it does and what I've done: 1. When it's first started, it knocks for less than 1 second and then gets entirely quiet. I hear maybe 2 knocks when it first starts. Then, when the motor is accelerated to 2000 RPMs it begins to knock and it keeps knocking until 3000ish RPMs. It increases in speed as the RPMs increase. If I let off the accelerator it stops knocking. When it's higher than 3,000 RPM it goes away. So it's in this midrange RPM the knock is present. It does this sitting still, or driving it. The rig was very sheltered it's whole life from what I can tell. It was driven lightly by an elderly lady. It's in immaculate condition, inside and out. Garaged. Paint and interior is perfect. Motor starts, idles and runs great other than the knock. Oil is full. I dropped the oil pan and checked the main and rod bearings. There was not any play. I changed them anyways. Noise persisted. There was some material in the pan's bottom, about 1/3 tablespoon (1 teaspoon) of what seemed to be fine wear material. Which I would think is normal for 167,000 miles. 2. It has a P1400 error code, for the EGR solenoid. I have not chased that yet. I don't find where this would cause a knock though. 3. The transmission fluid is 1 to 2 quarts low (based on my guess from stick reading), but the noise does not seem to be coming from the transmission, and the vehicle moves and drives fine. No slippage. What could be causing this part-time knock? Hydraulic lifters? Timing belt slap? Harmonic balancer? Cracked flexplate? The noise seems too loud to be the lifters, and doesn't do it at low RPMs like lifters usually do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Yeah what was it about those like 2005-2007 Audis, was it timing belt failure? I think there was a fix for whatever the issue was, but for a while there people were dropping those 06 Audis like crazy. I kind of thought about scooping one up, but nah, I just stuck with my 80000+ Saabs lol. BESIDES, Just abuse it until the chain gives out at 300,000 miles or so. Well... the chains don't go so much as the chain guides... either way it chews everything up real bad.
Sorry to hear about your arm. That looks painful. How in the heck did you do a timing belt and water pump with 1 arm? Hope you get well soon. Does the Lancer have an interference engine?
+DJDevon3 I'd believed it was, since my buddy's 2000 2.0 liter Lancer is an interference engine. I asked Brian if video shooting made it more possible for him to work 1 handed. If I could pull it off, I imagine being really slow...but I still leave the "if" in there.
***** It's still easier to change it preventatively. It's easier to get the parts to match up in time. You could pull a cover just to see if it looks great or that the letters wore off, because who likes getting stranded? On the one hand, interference engines should get higher compression and on the other they go lame when a belt is worn. Sheesh. Now that's a parellel.
So my vw gti was running great, I parked went inside for 2 hours, came back out and it wouldn't start, I thought it sounded like the fuel pump, like it wasn't gonna turn over but a mechanic tried to start it and said the chain was broke and messed up the motor... from a dead start? It never started up... is this possible?
My car has a po340 code and replaced camshaft p sensor. But it wont start at all .opened peep hole on timing belt and it's not moving .could it be other things with my car and it made no noise when it stopped dead in the road .Help
Hey, I have an 06 Lancer... it's my first car and I love it!!! Already put 3000 miles on it and I plan to put a million more. A timing belt cost my dad his Galent, I'll be damned if I forget about that belt.
Ya I got a 05 hyundai elantra it's essentially the same car since I think they were still using mitsubishi parts or at least parts that were based on them at that point and my car sounds EXACTLY like this one when he shows how a timing belt is supposed to spund
So Brian. What is the recommended procedure for a cylinder head with a bent valve or two. Have you ever seen a damaged piston beside an indentation? How would I approach a catastrophic issue like that? Thank you. Richard
+Richard Frank Remove the cylinder head and inspect the piston edges and impact areas for stress fracture or binding on the rings etc. Inspect the head for bent valves. Pull the valves and inspect the guides for cracks etc. Replace the parts that are out of compliance/spec. Assemble and go to dinner some place nice.
+Jared Udall Just turn around and brail it behind my back for parts and use body weight inertia when you need a little extra horse power to the wrench.
I got a 2002 Honda civic EX with a 1.7L V-tech, and I've been having problems with the harmonic balancer coming off the crankshaft with a chipped key way, I went to take off this morning and it stalled leaving my driveway and got stick in the middle of the road, now it won't start at all and sounds exactly like the car in the video. Do you think it could be the teeth on the crankshaft for the timing belt on the civic.
Also... you have to be the luckiest person in the world for a broken timing belt on an interference engine to not damage the valves. It was at the moment when the 2 outter cylinders were at the top of their strokes and the 2 inner were at the bottom, number one was at the very top of the compression stroke, number two was at the very bottom of the power stroke, number three was at the very bottom of the intake stroke, and number four was at the very top of the exhaust stroke.... meaning all the valves were either closed, or out of the way of the piston.

I thought a mechanic at work was working on a car without a timing belt. It sounded so similar to this! It turned out he had pulled the spark plugs, hoping to unflood an engine.
Is there any way we can see the repair I don't mind the cussing. Because in a garage it comes with the territory and "you have One really good excuse to cuss" get it one cause you have only one good arm to work with and are In pain. Good enough reason for me.. I'm really intrigued on how to fix the timing belt on those model Mitsubishi's. Any footage on this or other similar vehicles would be greatly appreciated. I always learn from your videos and would like to learn more about those model vehicles. I've heard there great cars and there are a lot of them out there to work on. Keep up the great work!! Ether way I stay watching and learning
Hi Grayson! Thanks for commenting. No. If the camshaft doesn't turn in relation to the crank, it can't run. The job of the timing belt is to keep those two in sync like a couple of dancers. Without it, feet get stepped on and the dance partners fall down.
It’s like a da da da da da instead of a woooooOoOooOOO lmfao I love this guy

Now you can legitimately claim that "timing belts are so easy to do that I even did one with one hand tied behind my back"!

I always learn from your videos and would like to learn more about those model vehicles. I've heard there great cars and there are a lot of them out there to work on. Keep up the great work!! Ether way I stay watching and learning
Hi
VERY unusual for you not to mention the relativity of 'non interference/interference engines' with timing belt failure.
Can I ask you a question, If the timing belt were broke, could you still get it to crank and run and go for a little ways before it dies again
No
Hi Grayson! Thanks for commenting. No. If the camshaft doesn't turn in relation to the crank, it can't run. The job of the timing belt is to keep those two in sync like a couple of dancers. Without it, feet get stepped on and the dance partners fall down.
Bro is that a 4G engine? Are all mitsubishi 4g series engines non interference? Thanks
