Just that simple noise, is the very reason I know how to rebuild engines now from the ground up. That rattling was the inception of my new found hobby. fixing cars.
Maybe you can tell me what's wrong with my car mine is throwing a po420 code I already replaced the o2 sensors and cadyaic converter still a check engine light and still a po420 code it has a tick sound not a knock but a tick sound I hope you can tell me. I think it's the fule injectors but not sure. It's a 2011 buick lacrosse cxl 3.6l v6 please help me. I haven't had this car that long I bought this car for $10.000 I have nothing but trouble can you help me
Finally! The first vid where I can actually hear the knock...it's only taken about an hour of listening to people get scientific and still not clearly point out the actual noise! Brilliant!
@@motorcarnutgood video by the way, I have a question today I went to work and my Dodge in this morning before leaving I had no issues. But when I left work the oil light came on went to AutoZone got the correct oil and now I'm hearing that weird noise, I don't know if I added too much oil because the oil light is still on. Do you have any suggestions?
@@motorcarnutthanks for the information also today I went to go start my truck and now I'm no longer hearing that noise and the oil light is not on but I'll check it again tomorrow
I have such terrible anxiety about this happening to my car because it's so costly to fix. I appreciate the video being so quick and too the point, now I can come back when I'm being paranoid 😂
My car developed a rod knock at 300k miles. Been driving like that for a year and a half, 700 miles every week. I comute 2 hours to work each way. At first the knock was noticeable while taking off from a stop. Now i can hear it at all times very subtly, almost not noticeable. My car has 370k miles now. Got a new engine ready to install. My car is a honda accord.
I doubt very much that you had a rod knock, car wouldn’t last an hour let alone a year and a half, makes no difference which vehicle manufacturer.Probably had detonation which can sound similar.
Changed my spark plugs today after what seemed like a misfire earlier. while listening to the engine I heard what sounded what sounded like rattling with the hood up. First thing that came to mind was a potential knock, not knowing what an engine knock sounds like. This reassured me it was definitely not an engine knock but something just moving around or working. thanks for the video nice and short and straight to the point.
could be your lifters, or injectors. (injectors can be super clicky sounding, and its normal) If its your lifters or lash adjusters depending on the engine type this can also be normal, but if its like super loud, you might want to look into it.
Misfire can be caused by almost any electrical component related to ignition. Especially all the ground bolts, and wiring harnesses. And airflow and pressure sensor,.and O2 sensors. The spark plug gets dirty, but so does every connection on the vehicle.
About the same description with what happened to my TJ. Had a misfire when I changed all six spark plugs. Ran the code and had two cylinder misfires in 3 and 4. I swear, all I did was change the plugs out of cylinders 1 and 2 with 3 and 4 and vice versa. That "knock" went away. Not sure exactly what it could have been.
Mine was caused by a weak oil pump. Didn't detect the pump cause I was running it in town and not much stress. But one time, I went racing against a Mercedes C class and stressed the engine, stopped, and heard the engine making noise like you explained. Changed the crankshaft, one connecting rod, and all the bearings main and rods. Now runs like new
Thank you! That's what I had this morning in my 2008 MIN Clubman S... at around 1,800 RPMs... when I shifted, it went away, but then again at around 1,800 RPMs. Five minutes later, when the engine was warmer, it went away. I just added 2 quarts of oil because it was really, really low. Great video for a female newbie :)
Good video, straight to the point, thank you for this. My engine (transverse DOHC V6, with timing belt to the exhaust cams, and intake and exhaust cams on each head linked by a chain) developed a pretty soft knock that starts once the engine gets up to temp and is almost unnoticeable at idle, audible at low RPM (800-1600 rpm or so) and then can't be heard after 3000 RPM, and it's decidedly at valvetrain pace. It got milder when swapping from 10W-40 to 5W-30, and got louder again once I added some "hydraulic lifter additive", leading me to suspect either something with the valvetrain itself or possibly a form of piston slap caused by gunked oil rings. Cracking open the front head revealed that I was missing(!) the lower chain guide for the cam chain on that head, and that the plastic surface on the remaining top guide had disintegrated. I wouldn't have even realized this was an issue until I found pieces of the plastic guide bit in the oil pan, and pulled up engine schematics to check how it's supposed to look. I've not yet examined the rear head. I've been fearing more substantial damage, but since this car is old but new to me, I suspect someone half-assed an engine overhaul at some point and left some parts out, giving me hope that the noise is just due to a problem with the chains and possibly some debris in a lifter. I've ordered a new set of chains and guides, and will be inspecting and cleaning all lifters and flushing with 0W-20 (and maybe a flush solution) in the hopes that the noise goes away and that the engine isn't on its way out. Again, thanks for this. You've given me some optimism. :) Edit: I also borescoped the cylinders to check for obvious burn marks or signs of valve impact, but I couldn't find anything of the sort.
Hey no problem and good luck with the job. Chain and guides will probably fix it. How many other things can go wrong all at the same time? I don’t think so.
@@motorcarnut Thanks for the reply! I'm a pessimist by nature, I expect the worst :) Those chains and guides need fixing, but the noise could also come from the hydraulic timing belt tensioner, so swapping that out at the same time might well fix it. Cars are fun. I'm still at the phase where I'll throw parts at problems, then feel stupid when the issue that actually caused my concern turned out to be something simple and dumb.
I'm noticing the same issue. After buying my old car but new to me 2011 Chevy Impala. I notice on cold start ups here and there it makes a knock/ticking noise for a minute then goes away. If i rev the car to 3000rpm or above i can kinda hear somthing. Im scared and not sure what to do. The car runs fine and only has 58k miles clean title.
@@BobbyISS the difference here is that my knock *started* when the engine warmed up, whereas yours ends once the engine gets warm. Most engines will resonate at some frequencies (2000 and 3000 are quite common), so if there's anything at all loose on there it might rattle. Some ticking at startup can also be caused by lifters/hydraulic lash adjusters having drained and not getting up to pressure until the oil flows freely. Sometimes fuel injectors will also get really noisy while still working well. I'd suggest you take it to a reliable mechanic and get them to listen to it (perhaps with a stethoscope) as it starts up, warms up and then as you rev it up and have them give you their opinion. As a follow up to my posts.. the car works now. Needed new chain guides and timing belt components (tensioner, idlers, water pump, belt) and fresh oil. I'm keeping an eye on the metal content in the oil, because there's still a chance that a bearing might be on its way out.
Nice video. You describe the higher rate Main Connecting Rod Bearing Knock from severely worn bearings due to oil starvation and half rate Valve Knock from bad Lifters and Cam wear due to oil starvation as well. But you should include "Detonation" Knock (or Pinging) which is caused when the air/fuel mixture burns rapidly other than from the spark flame front (a smooth flame burn from the spark, and a rapid explosive burn spontaneously from another area in the cylinder - usually near a piston edge). That Knock is a bit more random and is a sharper in tone and duration. Pinging can lead to a hole being blown through the piston, the cylinder, the valves, head gasket, or even crack the head.
I was told my problem with 2.4 ecotec was the timing chains and guides, tensioner too, which I had done by a shop ,but I still have this noise which is double knock , which I believe as an old tech, rod noise either large or small end , great video , I think I’ll attempt popping out pistons in the driveway when weather permits ,thanks Roger I’ll keep you updated
There is an Spanish traditional instrument named "castañuelas" (castanets) that sounds very similar. Engine knock is "picado de biela" and the sound is "las castañuelas del terror" (castanets of terror)
Thank you it’s exactly what my Toyota Coaster motor sounds like ..mechanic diagnostics implied immediately an injector problem . Quoted over $4,000 didn’t eliminate other problems . I was in tears very upset .Quoted on visual evidence only .As a novice to learning about motors So glad I found this video to learn from and made me more aware .
If the engine is quiet when running is a great sign that it's a good engine. If the engine makes a clicking sound and your told they sound like that when warning up don't believe it. Thanks for the video on this subject. Didn't know it sounded like that, but the engine was pretty noisey.
Thank you and correct! Engines do have some light clicking ticking noises from fuel injectors, high pressure fuel pump etc. but should never be like the engine in the video which was blown.
Thank God I was hearing like a sound on top I thought it was engine knocking but after searching and found this video I was like oh God thank you because I hit the gas pedal I never heard any of this sound. Thank you very much!
I can’t thank you enough, I recently noticed a ticking sound and was told it was knocking, thankfully I looked into it myself using this and a few other videos to find out it’s the valves
Good video any idea what my noise could be? It’s like a metal tick and sometimes vibration while ideling noise comes from engine / exhaust manifold loss of acceleration and terrible gas mileage. Thanks!
FINALLY THE NOISE I NEEDED TO HEAR WHICH IS EXACTLY SAME AS MY ISSUE , BEEN SEARCHING OVER 1 MONTH ON YT FOR THIS NOISE :((( COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHAT IT COULD BE AS I DONT SEEM TO HAVE ANY LEAKS, MAYBE ENGINE MOUNTS?? many thanks in advance❤
I've got a 2010 mitsubishi outlander 2.4L and there's a noise that changes with the rpm that kinda sounds like a diesel engine(best way to describe it), but only when cold. Once the engine heats up, the sound basically disappears. Btw, the sound was worse in winter when the engine was very cold.
My car just started this tool it for them to get it read my paper work says down stream 92 sensor and the camshaft timing by 01 oxygen my car is a 2913 Hyundai sonata
Thank you for this video. I have a similar deep noise on my engine when cold, except it's more muffled (sounding like a diesel engine) and becomes less noticeable as the car comes to operating temperature. I'm hesitating between rod knock and piston slap...
You’re welcome, well can be piston slap because as the pistons get hot they expand and in turn make less noise. Rod knock when it’s not that bad is the opposite because the oil is thicker when cold and therefore less noticeable when cold.
At first thank you so much for this video which I was looking for. Recently I bought a honda accord 2009 used car. I’ve checked with two mechanic before buying it. They said it is good also worth buying it. After 1 day the engine turned off in a parking lot. After some time the engine get started exactly the same sound from the above video we’ve faced. We tried to move it to the garage slowly the engine keeps getting off and also engine sign popped as well as high temperature and continuous sound. What do you prefer to rebuild or replace the engine might be a good option?
Actually we thinking of to change the engine (reconditioned engine with 2month guarantee) and the mechanic also suggesting the same cause it will work fine as new car.
Sorry that you have to replace the engine after 1 day, the mechanics should of noticed something was wrong. I would take it to someone different to install new engine. Sometimes it’s better to rebuild the original one in the car but it can be more expensive sometimes. Well at least you will have a warranty. Good luck
Our lovely old cars had a Jack handle or staring handle to put to the ear for any knocks if it started to knock we put in Duckams 50 Grade oil and kept it running till we changed the crankshaft bearings which on the old cars could be done in a morning.
Engine knock and rod knock are different. Rod knock is what he explained, bearings and stuff wearing and the rod moving. Engine knock is when air/fuel combusts on its own without spark or simply when the air fuel mixture combusts on its own(without the sparkplug combusting them). Pleae correct me if i am wrong
You are correct! Yes the term "engine knock" is used very broadly especially the public to describe basically any loud noise coming from their engine so I use it because people can relate to it and hopefully understand what a "rod knock" is even though many will still call it a engine knock.
Thanks, i have a kia, known for burning oil. Figured it was low oil because it'll stop making the noise when i add more oil. To prevent this I just add oil near the max capacity so by the time i add more it'll still be above minimum oil capacity. Took me a little while to figure it out because the noise would happen randomly when i accelerate 25% of the time and it'll only last half a sec or so.
Not sure if you'll see this question but I had this same noise after a Mechanic did my head gaskets. Not sure if I even needed headgaskets I just offered to do them since I had the money. Had smoke coming out of tail pipe when turning from a full stop hitting the gas. I would have to lay off the gas then continue for it to go. But my mechanic worked on my 02 chevy impala v6 3.8 I told him to replace my head gaskets. He had my car for a while and the night he put the engine back together he cranked it up for me. It sounded so smooth like butter. 2 days later (kept car to put on the egr valve) it was knocking like this I was losing oil pressure and everything. To this day I do not know what warranted this kind of behavior. The guy was a family member of mine and he used to be a heavy drinker. I remember he said he drove 30 minutes away and back after I heard it crank up that night. Heads got machined and everything. I wonder if maybe he was drunk and floored it too hard and broke the bottom end. Or if he just misplaced something or didn't torque anything down? I wonder in my situation where it just fails out of nowhere what could have happened? I have the video of the sound on my UA-cam channel
Wow, It's hard to predict what he could of done wrong. Maybe he didn't change or check engine oil that could of been low and caused the knock and then put oil in it when he realized it and it was too late? IDK. I actually have a video on that engine's head gasket replacement and there is no valve timing to mess up to cause that problem as well. So had to be low or no oil IMO. Unless the noise you here is not an engine knock?
I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla with 41,000 miles on it. On my way home from work about a week ago I ran over an object that destroyed my upper and lower oil pan. I took it to the dealership to get this diagnostic. What they wanted to replace it was something I couldn’t afford at the moment. So I took my car to a local shop to get it done. The local shop J.B Weld the upper aluminum oil pan and replaced the lower oil pan with a new one. I get the car back and it’s make this exact sound from the video. My car has been saying low oil pressure off and no. Which I have told the local shop. They then tells me that I need a new engine, but this is damn near a brand new car. What should I do ?
I had an ecotech with really bad lifter tick. I thought it was knocking up until I watched this, now I wish I didn't sell that car Great video nevertheless, keep up the good work and content
@@terrapinflyer273 My best advice is to get a precision stethoscope and poke around seeing if you can hear the sounds in different areas. Your fuel injectors will click while they are running, you should only really hear the fuel pump near the rear of the vehicle
I have this issue. I have a 02 Town and Country 3.8L 107k miles. Just started hearing in the last two weeks. Got a oil change, it needed it but the noise consists. It does it a start, a little at idle and more as I accelerate.
I can’t answer for what someone else could of done. You should bring it back to them if they touched anything that has to do with oil pressure or the oil pump.
@@motorcarnut all i know is i took my truck in without any knocking noise and then after 3 weeks they call me to tell me there is a knocking noise coming from the engine. I’m $4000 out of pocket and left with a ruined engine. I’d really appreciate if you could give me some advice.
A family member changed their own oil and didn't quite tighten up their cartridge filter all the way in their 2.4L Ecotec which caused a leak. After a week or so it was making some pretty nasty knocking noise, sounded like rod knock. I added about 4 quarts total of a mix of 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, and 10w-40 that I had on hand just to get them on the road and the knock seems to have gone away completely. It's a tough little engine, I expected far less from a modern Chevy product.
Glad to hear it worked out. It probably wasn't a metal to metal rod knock because damage would be done and adding oil would not save it. Probably was the valve train.
@@motorcarnut The knock was intermittent, which was odd. It went away at higher speed, but was loud as hell at lower speeds, say, under 30 mph. A quart of 5w-30 and a quart of 10w-40 got us 30 minutes back home with no noise. Oil light never came on, which was concerning. Engine light did, though. Should we be concerned about valve train damage or any other damage?
@@user-jn9km6qd7g exactly what was happening to my car I added oil and gunna get oil change before I drive it again , did anything ever come from it or was it fine
I was so dumb and threw some cataclean in the gas tank on my Corolla with 186k miles, revved it through the cat at 5000+ rpm for 15 miles on old, low oil and knocked a rod. Ended up retiring the car because of the cat and got some money toward a newer Corolla with less miles. Still miss the old one sometimes even though it had become a money pit.
There’s a BIG difference between pre ignition detonation and physical metal to metal engine knock. One is a pinging sound and the other is a banging noise.
Just to add my Civic makes a weak ticking noise but it doesn't sound like knock or valve issues. Looking online and apparently it's the evap purge valve and quite normal for this engine (R18). And perhaps unsurprisingly it vacuum latches on to the fuel cap like a leech as well.
Hey MotarCarNut! My 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE started making this same exact sound about a few days ago. I’ve had diagnostics run on it twice already, no codes pop up. No engine light either. My car doesn’t wanna excel past 2,000 RPM’s and you guest ticking the whole time, whether I’m driving 10 mph or 40pmh. Car then stalls out here and there during hard turns or turns in general. Funny thing is, I’m still 1,300 miles early for a new oil change. You have an ideas? I feel like it’s oil related but I’m lost 😢
Those engines are known for crankshaft failure and Hyundai will replace the engine for free if its under 120k miles, I’ve rebuilt many that were out of warranty, just a heads up!
@@motorcarnut Yeah it must be that because I’ve already had issues related to the camshaft under code P0017. It’s crazy man. This is a 2017 with only 60k miles and I’m the second owner since 11,000 miles. I’m getting it fixed this week and after that, I’m completely done with Hyundai’s forever. Thanks for the love man! All the way from Boston, MA! Shalom 💫
My engine sounds same to you. What should I do? Do I need to change Manifold intake? Or IMRC or the lifter or any idea? But sometimes not so loud when running. Give me some ideas. I have a video too, i want to send to you.
Bought a car in Holland to drive home 2000km away. Got to Germany, autobahn happened and the exact same noise started. No problem on idling but with some revs knocking just like in the video. Ordered a trailer and had the car transported home just to find that the gasket between turbo and manifold was kaputt. Cant tell if I'm the luckiest unlucky person or unluckiest lucky person 😄
Mine made similar sound, but, it only does that once car is running for like 10 minutes. Also, that sound seems to mostly go away when rpm is over 3000. Any idea what it could be? It’s going to mechanic in a few days, but, I’m curious now
Thank you! Quick question…. If I have a 2002 Toyota Camry that I know needs a new oil pump and I fix that problem, would it cause that knocking sound to go away???
Welcome! A rebuild or replacement of the engine. Engine knock like in my video is the connecting rod bearing and the crankshaft journal play do to lack of oil and destroyed the bearing creating metal to metal contact ( engine knock)
@@motorcarnut I have an Infiniti. It only does it sometimes. I’ll drive and it’ll be silent, but when I come to a stop there’s a subtle rattle. It sounds like the front right speaker is blown almost, that kind of noise. But I turn the radio off and it’s still there, so not sure
Guy you really sounds very knowledgeable. My 05 Lincoln aviator 4.6 and has a new knocking sound. More sounded like a converter shield but that’s been eliminated. It’s def in the motor. Any idea where to start
Thank you for the comment! Yes, if possible drop the oil pan and see which rod spun the bearing and how bad it is. Sometimes you can get away with just polishing up the crank journal and replace the bearings but that’s usually rare. Most of the times if a rod didn’t poke through the block you’ll end up replacing the crankshaft which ever rod that failed and all main and rod bearings.
This kind of knocking developed on my jaguar xe 20d and would increase in frequency when accelerating- but the noise would completely stop once the engine heated up. I had read some posts of people saying if it goes away when the engine heats up then dont worry. Well, rip my 20d after 140,000 miles almost 😢, i took it to the dealership to figure out what it is and they suspect its an engine bearing, which it does sound similar to this.
Man you explain that so well thank you. I have a question My car needs a tune up but I haven't had the money to have it done and so I've been driving it anyway for the past 3 weeks and it has only recently began to make a knocking sound... Is it dangerous to keep driving it
Unfortunately, yes. If it were just running a little rough I’d say that’s ok but not knocking. Have at least a local mechanic just give a listen to see if in fact it is knocking, if it’s something else then probably could still drive it. Hope that helps.
Got to make sure it’s not an accessory pulley first but rod knocking does start out slow too sometimes so I’d look into soon before more damage occurs.
My '98 subi has cold start tick. The service light would come on intermittently (causing limp mode). My (provisional licence) son bought it home on Friday sounding like this. I was sure it was headed for the scrap yard. Turns out, it was actually a hole in the exhaust (i had replaced 6 years ago). Mechanic sent it out for welding = $250 fix. Hopefully it fixes the sticky Speedo too, lol. I'd be happy if it lasts another year, while my youngest son gets his xp up.
What is the name of the bearing or what part that needs to be replaced when this happens. This is the exact sound on my civic after it ran out of oil from an oil leak
If it is an engine knock rod knock the engine would have to be rebuilt or replaced. I don't know what year and model you have but it may be covered under Hyundai's engine replacement program.
I have a 2011 Nissan Rogue. The vehicle stalled at a light about a month ago, but I didn't hear any noise at all. Yesterday, I heard a faint knocking in the engine and I checked the oil which was extremely low. I cranked it again and the knocking got louder and then the engine stalled. Cranked it again and the knocking calmed down. Now it's a faint rattle.
Change the oil and filter and put some oil treatment in and see if that helps. Hopefully you didn't blow the engine by letting it run too low on oil. Good luck!
This is very helpful. My 2022 Triumph Scrambler 1200xc motorcycle with only 1900 miles developed a knocking, not as loud as your car there, but just enough to be noticeable. Of course the service manager denied hearing it. The speed of the knocking according to your explanation would be from the valves. I was also thinking a loose piece of metal like a the timing chain tensioner. Not sure what to think about this because it was running perfectly before they serviced it and repeat an oil leak at the driveshaft which has nothing to do with the valves, or the crank, but possibly the connecting rods and/or the valves even though they are not connected. I used a stethoscope and it sounded like normal, smooth rotation inside the engine, but if I took the stethoscope off my ears, I could hear the knocking. What could possibly be knocking inside an engine with only 1900 miles ?
@@motorcarnut : called yesterday. now I have to go thru the same thing as I did with the oil leak. it’s like pulling teeth with this dealership. Yesterday I also sent an email to Triumph letting them know they are useless and they don’t care about supporting their customers. Customer service is just about gone on planet earth.
@@motorcarnut : spent three long hours talking to the general manager last Saturday. He’s going to contact triumph to get details on the ECU update which should tell us if anything changes with the air fuel mixture. Also have to find out what type of oil was used in the first fill at the factory, then the oil used in both the first and second services. My mind is set on the oil because it’s the only thing that changes during the services. All these bikes have this issue, all over the world. It’s the common denominator for all these engines at the service interval. We shall soon see.
@motorcarnut thank you! Sounds like a translation mistake as my teacher referred to ignition knock as engine knock. Maybe we use different terminology in the UK 😆
On my bike there is sometimes a tick/rattle/knock that i hear in the mid rpm range. It kind of quiets down when in the high rpm (or my engine is just overpowering the knock sound). I got 3k miles on the odometer and its got fresh oil. I suspect the bike is running lean, could this be the cause for that sound? I plan on changing spark plugs before the next season, and potentially cleaning out the carbs.
Hi motorcarnut, I've been having a light tapping noise only when engine is warm on a 2020 Honda HRV 1.8L engine with CVT (14k miles). Noise is heard only in drive, reverse when accelerating slowly, specially between 1000 and 1400 rpm. No noise at idle. Changed spark plugs, engine oil was clean, all levels good. Also I've read in several forums that a lot of people have had this noise from 0 miles. And that honda and dealerships have told them that it's normal. Is not the sound of ticking, it's a tapping noise behind the ticking, it's not loud, but once you hear it you can't forget about it. I have a video of it in my youtube channel and also made a playlist of sounds that are similar. Can you please hear them and maybe tell if in fact it's just a normal noise or something to be afraid of? Have had many mechanics listen to it, the first said that it could be the tensioner and that most Honda's make that noise, that it can't be rod knock sin the car only has 15k miles and hasn't been abused. Another said it could be a motor mount since he used a stethoscope and the tapping noise was heard loudly in the left motor mount but it doesn't have any leaks... could it be the hpfp or just a rythmic resonating noise? No CEL's, no performance loss... i just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my car. I've driving it with that noise for more than 10k miles without getting worse.
Hey, I just listened to that noise. What I would do is take the serpentine belt off to rule out a pulley, tensioner or bearing noise, and see if you still hear that noise, if you do, it's an engine knock. The speed of the sound means it's the crankshaft not the camshaft as the crank spins faster than the camshaft. That noise IS NOT normal. How can the dealer mechanic not hear that. Take the car back before it gets worse and they blame you!
My dad told me a week ago we needed an oil change but didn’t have the money to buy some. I just heard that noise when I was coming down the street. Does that mean my motor is broken? Or is it too late?
Hello, my friend! I recently had my oil filter fall off of my 06 Chevy Silverado while driving and now it’s making a knocking noise at idle and while driving. It’s not quite as fast as the one in the video. It feels a little sluggish though. Do you believe marvel mystery oil may solve it? Or cleaning the valves perhaps?
Unfortunately if the engine ran without oil and now has an engine knock it doesn't look good. You can try some oil additives. The valves would have nothing to do with it.
I have a 2015 Pathfinder where the engine is not loud at all. However, there is a knocking noise in the driver's side cabin when I'm idle. I took it to a mechanic and they tuned the spark plugs and looked at the fuel system. However, I still have this noise. I also am trying to use higher-octane fuel but am not sure what to do. I don't want my engine dying on me.
The mechanic looked at it and what was their conclusion? You can try posting a video on the channel so I can listen and make point you in the right direction.
Ok, I just heard it, the buzzing noise is normal from the fuel injection system and the engine from the outside does sound normal as well but I don't like the sound inside the car near the drivers footwell, it does concern me because of the speed of the sound which is the same as crankshaft speed. This could be a low end rod knock but can't be sure from just a video. I would get a second option local to rule out and engine rod knock. Detonation from an ignition problem can sound almost the same but that usually happens when the vehicle is under load, like going up a hill or pulling a trailer.
Thanks for the video.. my car starting making this sound couple days ago every time I accelerate it ticks faster and today was the first time my Camry turned off on me multiple times.. can what you just explained in this video make make the car turn off as well?
Iv literally been watching all types of videos to try to figure out what’s wrong with my car 😩 & I feel this may be the closest orrrrr 😅 a timing belt issue I’m so lost but this video was right to the point and easy to understand
@@motorcarnut I’m not sure on how I can do it through the comments, but if you have Facebook or Instagram or feel comfortable giving your number I would definitely send a video, because I’m so lost and honestly this is the only video that gave me some sort of direction! Thank you for responding as well.
Hello I just had this happen to me not sure what could it be! As I was going 70 on highway and I felt it making this strange sound and as I pull over I try to rev. Gets worse and powers off the vehicle. Suddenly I had to drive back where I came from going below 40. I’m not too good with cars but I hope I can explain what I need? I don’t wanna fix the vehicle as I’ll be getting rid of this vehicle by end of the month. Would any item from auto zone help?
I"m sorry really don't know, If you heard a loud knock like in this video then, no nothing from Auto Zone will help. Try to have a local mechanic see it first.
I just went to auto zone put 2 quarts of oil the low oil pressure symbol got removed. The sound stopped after putting oil I figured had no oil lol. But after letting it run for 10 min I rev my car and it’s just giving me knocking 😩
Great video mate my son's car it's got like a very quite knocking sound which is intermediate and it goes fast if you rev it but it's not doing it all the time any udea ideas thx Graham
So what sorted out this engine? An oil change? Or rods needed to be changed or rode bearings. I have changed the oil pump and water pump in my engine few days later this problem appeared but the knock sound is less what I see. What could be the problem.
Hello my engine rattle noise when on D gear, so every time stop light I put on neutral and rattle noise no more, what do you think the problem? Thank you take care.
Hi, my vehicle showed me the oil light and I parked it to check what could be wrong only to find that there literally no oil In the engine. I tried to start like a day after I saw that because it was parked, it started then I turned it off, tried in the evening and it couldn't start but it's cranking. Could the engine be gone?
If you replaced the engine oil to proper level and it still doesn't start, I would have it checked out immediately and hopefully you didn't cause too much damage letting it run low on oil.
I heard a very quiet knock in my car earlier and it definitely didn’t sound like that so thank god… it was 47 degrees outside so I’m wondering if the cold made it sound like that or it couldn’t be something else
Could it sound like that still even when it’s 65 degrees outside?? I heard it still I mean it’s very faint I can’t tell if that’s just the sound of my engine or something’s wrong with it I own a 2013 v6 mustang
Can you just leave the engine as it is, top up fluids and still use it? (I mean for example if its a very low value car that otherwise would go to the junkyard) What would happend to it? Would the engine seize? How long do you think it would be running?
I seem to have this but ONLY in 1st/low speed/idoling. Checked oil and it’s just slightly above the min mark. Could this be as simple as topping up the oil?
I have this sound on my 13 gl450. Increases when accelerating. Diagnosed by repair shop as engine failure, with metal shavings in oil. Didn’t even drive the car 3000 miles since previous oil change. I’m out so much money and no car now
I have this 2.2 in my 07 Saturn Vue. Has 112k miles and I've probably spent about 1k since new on repairs. Runs and looks like new and I think it's a gteat engine.
Just that simple noise, is the very reason I know how to rebuild engines now from the ground up. That rattling was the inception of my new found hobby. fixing cars.
That’s great
Big end bearing worn
That is so cool
Maybe you can tell me what's wrong with my car mine is throwing a po420 code I already replaced the o2 sensors and cadyaic converter still a check engine light and still a po420 code it has a tick sound not a knock but a tick sound I hope you can tell me. I think it's the fule injectors but not sure. It's a 2011 buick lacrosse cxl 3.6l v6 please help me.
@brandonporteriamyasuke1507 sounds like you lose oil pressure for some reason. I wouldn’t use the car until someone can check it out.
@@motorcarnutthanks for the information also today I went to go start my truck and now I'm no longer hearing that noise and the oil light is not on but I'll check it again tomorrow
@brandonporteriamyasuke1507 That’s a good thing and both go hand in hand.
I have such terrible anxiety about this happening to my car because it's so costly to fix. I appreciate the video being so quick and too the point, now I can come back when I'm being paranoid 😂
Lol, don’t worry. Just maintain your oil and level and you will be fine.
@motorcarnut Follow up question! Will this be audible at high speeds? Like could I hear the knock over the engine sounds on the highway?
Yes
Changed my spark plugs today after what seemed like a misfire earlier. while listening to the engine I heard what sounded what sounded like rattling with the hood up. First thing that came to mind was a potential knock, not knowing what an engine knock sounds like. This reassured me it was definitely not an engine knock but something just moving around or working. thanks for the video nice and short and straight to the point.
No problem! Thanks for the comment!
could be your lifters, or injectors.
Bearings.
Now runs like new
Great! Thanks exactly what I repaired on that car in the video.

No problem! thanks for the comment.
I can't tell if I'm knocking or just a ticking but when I rev it does not get worse, louder, or faster...I know thats not a diagnosis but thoughts?
Could be the fuel injectors?
Thank you! That's what I had this morning in my 2008 MIN Clubman S... at around 1,800 RPMs... when I shifted, it went away, but then again at around 1,800 RPMs. Five minutes later, when the engine was warmer, it went away.
Edit: I also borescoped the cylinders to check for obvious burn marks or signs of valve impact, but I couldn't find anything of the sort.
Hey no problem and good luck with the job. Chain and guides will probably fix it. How many other things can go wrong all at the same time? I don’t think so.
@@motorcarnut Thanks for the reply!
I'm a pessimist by nature, I expect the worst :)
Those chains and guides need fixing, but the noise could also come from the hydraulic timing belt tensioner, so swapping that out at the same time might well fix it.
Cars are fun. I'm still at the phase where I'll throw parts at problems, then feel stupid when the issue that actually caused my concern turned out to be something simple and dumb.
That’s where knowledge and experience come into play. But you got to start somewhere. Good luck!
Detonation is not in the same class as metal to metal knock but some that don’t know may think it is but that’s another video
@@motorcarnut knock sensors are there to detect preignition and detonation

Hello. My car sounds exactly this as well. Did you ever find out what it was? Was it really an injector problem?
Engine has to be replaced or rebuilt
If the engine is quiet when running is a great sign that it's a good engine. If the engine makes a clicking sound and your told they sound like that when warning up don't believe it. Thanks for the video on this subject. Didn't know it sounded like that, but the engine was pretty noisey.

You're welcome, I'm glad it was of use to you.
Could be piston slap, Subarus are known for that. As the engine heat up metal expands that's why you don't hear it when hot.
@@motorcarnut I don't have a Subaru, it's a 2010 outlander, but is piston slap bad?
I know you don’t was just saying. Yes as it will only get worse but you should have a mechanic local check it out first to be sure.

Those were the good old days for sure.
This is what happened to my F150. 5000 repair, luckily 90% of that was covered by my warranty.
Good warranty, 10% is not bad.
@motorcarnut oh okk 👍
Perfect expectations!! Thanks so much!!
You're so welcome!
I like your accent.
I was still unsure about the engine knock, but on idle, I could hear something sounded wrong.
Thank you.
Thank you!
Little by little the engine is getting worse, should have someone check it out before you lose the engine.
Awesome video, I was so scared that I broke the engine

I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla with 41,000 miles on it. On my way home from work about a week ago I ran over an object that destroyed my upper and lower oil pan. I took it to the dealership to get this diagnostic. What they wanted to replace it was something I couldn’t afford at the moment. So I took my car to a local shop to get it done. The local shop J.B Weld the upper aluminum oil pan and replaced the lower oil pan with a new one. I get the car back and it’s make this exact sound from the video.

Thank you! Quick question…. If I have a 2002 Toyota Camry that I know needs a new oil pump and I fix that problem, would it cause that knocking sound to go away???
If damage didn’t already occur, yes.
Hey! Thanks for the video.. my car started having this yesterday and kept it aside. Knocking syncs with the revs what is the best way to get rid?
Welcome!
A rebuild or replacement of the engine. Engine knock like in my video is the connecting rod bearing and the crankshaft journal play do to lack of oil and destroyed the bearing creating metal to metal contact ( engine knock)
How to fixt it , as it happened to my tuck as well. thanks
@@motorcarnut can this be caused by a bad timing chain replacement
Not really, most offen it’s low or no oil or pressure.
@@motorcarnut Can I just replace the connecting rod bearing and the crankshaft?
Very well explained thanks Sir
Thank you, appreciate that!
Everyone is telling me my engine is fucked cause it's ticking when idle but it's fine when driving?
What do you mean ticking? If it sounds like the noise in the video then you got a problem.
Same thing happens with me, but it’s not crazy loud
That’s not good, also can be piston slap Subaru’s are known for it.
Could be your oil pump or pressure starting to go
Great video.!
Is it expensive to fix? Like $1000… or $5000 ? Or is it worth fixing?
Depends on the vehicle engine and if it’s going to be rebuilt or replaced
Thank you for the video. I have a nissan tiida with the same sound. How long can i drive it before replacing it?
Thank you as well!, Not very long if it's this loud. Maybe it's not an engine knock? Have someone just listen to it to be sure.
Sounds like that to me as well. Rod knock
@@motorcarnut ua-cam.com/users/shortsawtIaoWIa-w?si=3M2fsFSBSUOvbU4I example here for easier reference. Rod knock yea?
Knock knock knock
Who's there?
Engine Knocking.
Engine knocking who?
Me. Plays this video.
lol, yep
Man you explain that so well thank you. I have a question My car needs a tune up but I haven't had the money to have it done and so I've been driving it anyway for the past 3 weeks and it has only recently began to make a knocking sound... Is it dangerous to keep driving it
Unfortunately, yes. If it were just running a little rough I’d say that’s ok but not knocking. Have at least a local mechanic just give a listen to see if in fact it is knocking, if it’s something else then probably could still drive it. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the video, my 2001 tacomas been making a knocking noise only when it’s put in gear. It doesn’t knock in park/neutral.
Watch out for head gasket problems too
What is the name of the bearing or what part that needs to be replaced when this happens. This is the exact sound on my civic after it ran out of oil from an oil leak
It would have to be taken apart to see the damage but could be the crankshaft, connecting rod and rod bearings at a minimum.
You seem to reply to most people, my Hyundai is making this sound but also is having trouble idling what do you think?
If it is an engine knock rod knock the engine would have to be rebuilt or replaced. I don't know what year and model you have but it may be covered under Hyundai's engine replacement program.
That wasn't the knock I was looking for. Good clip anyway 🇭🇲🤪
Thanks, and glad it's not!
Bring it back to them, they messed something up!
@ginoasci2876 very sad but true especially if they owe you money.
Sorry to hear this that you’re going through, good luck with everything!
How about knocking due to low octane fuel? Is it the same sound?
No it's not. Low octane fuel sounds like a pinging noise where engine rod knock sounds much louder metal to metal.
This is different from low speed pre ignition? I thought that was referred to as engine knock?
Yes, what you are referring to is ignition knock or detonation, completely different from Rod Knock
@motorcarnut thank you! Sounds like a translation mistake as my teacher referred to ignition knock as engine knock. Maybe we use different terminology in the UK 😆
No problem. Yes the words are often used describing both sounds but are clearly different.
I would change the oil and plugs and put premium fuel in it and see how that goes.
@@motorcarnut Ok I wil do that. Thanks!
No problem.
Most of the time it is too late. Low oil will make it knock. I would immediately change the oil and filter and see from there.
Just wondering how many miles do you have on that Ecotec 2.2?
That one had 120k
Hello, my friend! I recently had my oil filter fall off of my 06 Chevy Silverado while driving and now it’s making a knocking noise at idle and while driving. It’s not quite as fast as the one in the video. It feels a little sluggish though. Do you believe marvel mystery oil may solve it? Or cleaning the valves perhaps?
Unfortunately if the engine ran without oil and now has an engine knock it doesn't look good. You can try some oil additives. The valves would have nothing to do with it.
@ okay thank you! You’re awesome and are helping a lot of people. Have a great day my friend!
Thank you, Really appreciate that! You too!
@@motorcarnut Thanks so much for offering. When I get a moment, I'll post a recording.
No problem
@@motorcarnut Hi. I keep putting the video link here but the comment keeps getting deleted. Please let me know if you need the UA-cam link.
Yes and worse, sieze.
Iv literally been watching all types of videos to try to figure out what’s wrong with my car 😩 & I feel this may be the closest orrrrr 😅 a timing belt issue I’m so lost but this video was right to the point and easy to understand

Yeah, the low oil destroyed the engine.
Thank you ❤
Thank you for watching!

Can be a rod knock, can you post a video on UA-cam and I can give a listen
So what sorted out this engine? An oil change? Or rods needed to be changed or rode bearings. I have changed the oil pump and water pump in my engine few days later this problem appeared but the knock sound is less what I see. What could be the problem.
Engine has to be rebuilt, new crankshaft main and rod bearings and if needed connecting rods at a minimum

You could of heard a piston slap with usually gets more quiet as it warms up due to expansion.
Could it sound like that still even when it’s 65 degrees outside?? I heard it still I mean it’s very faint I can’t tell if that’s just the sound of my engine or something’s wrong with it I own a 2013 v6 mustang
@thomasorona9386 yes, try making a video and I’ll give a listen
@@motorcarnut how should I send it to you? Should I just post it on UA-cam and you check it out?
@thomasorona9386 Yes
So when your car sounds like Perry The Platypus at 0:25, you’re fcuked.
In so many words, yes
Can you just leave the engine as it is, top up fluids and still use it? (I mean for example if its a very low value car that otherwise would go to the junkyard) What would happend to it? Would the engine seize? How long do you think it would be running?
Depending on the severity of the damage from a couple of minutes to a couple of weeks. The engine will ultimately seize.
I seem to have this but ONLY in 1st/low speed/idoling. Checked oil and it’s just slightly above the min mark. Could this be as simple as topping up the oil?
If there is a rod knock caused by low oil the damage is done already.
Poor little ecotec, God job man
Thank you!
I have this sound on my 13 gl450. Increases when accelerating. Diagnosed by repair shop as engine failure, with metal shavings in oil. Didn’t even drive the car 3000 miles since previous oil change. I’m out so much money and no car now
Sorry to hear that. Usually those engine are very reliable.
I have this 2.2 in my 07 Saturn Vue. Has 112k miles and I've probably spent about 1k since new on repairs. Runs and looks like new and I think it's a gteat engine.
They are just don’t let you oil level go below the minimum mark like this owner did and you’ll be fine.
have you tried a thicker oil My 1970 SS 454 Monte Carlo uses diesel oil which has zinc otherwise thinner oil makes my newly rebuilt engine knock
No kind of oil is going to help mechanical failure.
I get a knock sound while accelerating,a sound quieter than that of yours, what would it be?
Can be a rod knock or destination, pinging either way you should have it checked out asap to make sure.
@motorcarnut okay thanks
No problem!
Does it start with a mild noise in early stages of rod knock or it gets to that point right away?
Yes, it starts mild then get worse if it’s not addressed in time.
