I love how nothing gets through without getting a backstory from Dave. Half of a dude strapped to the teeth of a dozer? That's sick. Coming up with a little slice of natrative for it at well? Its immediately more sick! I know next to nothing about official lore, but i love these stories that are frozen in the enviornment so much!
Those side Flamers look so out of place but also give the vibe that they were a small retrofit made because they didn't have the time to build actual sponsons. Totally captures the desperate rebel vibe, great work Dave.
Dave's Traitor Guard is one of my favorite continual projects on the channel. I have no idea what it is but they always excite me and make me so badly want to make my own. And wow, having not seen them in person, I wouldn't have noticed the difference in fidelity between the two tank kits until you pointed it out. It's really quite stark, especially across that front section of the main chassis.
Having updated kits for old tanks would be great, I know i'd like a refresh of the old Devilfish chassis for the Tau. I just get the feeling a lot of people are worried they will "Refresh" the line the same way they did with Space Marines and just make new stuff and remove the old iconic stuff. That being said with the Xenos armies GW seems to be good at keeping the original feel of the old stuff and updating it (10th Tyranids and Kroot being the prime example) so fingers cross they keep up that trend.
The "strange lug nut" on the sides are track tensioners! Modern tanks hide them away in the suspension but old ww1 era vehicles had them loud and proud on the front exterior as seen on guard vehicles. It's a small detail but adds a nice bit of authenticity to the design.
It would be fun if the traitor's "Leman Russ" model was called "Magnus", "Rogal Dorn" model was called "Perturabo" and "Malcador" was called "Abbadon"...
The excitement oozing off of Dave as he talks about nailing the corpse to the dozer blade is palpable. Love these moments captured in TTT videos; it shows that even though this is an exhausting job putting out content 2-3x a week for these hard working folks, they maintain a sense of joy and creativity throughout. Please don’t burn out! You guys are one of my favorite channels!
I love how you have all old bits and peices I had forgotten all about the brass parts id love to see you get ahold of more old stuff to use for kit bashing
The difference between the new and the old one is subtle but really evident when they are next to each other. I like what you have done with your version.
These Traitor Guard videos are my favorite! I collect them as my main army alongside my Iron Warriors and Chaos Knights. Just finished up my Octoblade, and would LOVE to see you add one (or any variant) to your force!
Im going to be using this tank for my feudal guard so the way you have made the sponsons is really useful to me thank you. They look so good. hope to keep seeing more of your traitor guard.
This channel actually inspired me to do a traitor guard army! the previous tutorial in regards to kitbashing cadians worked like a charm! Please continue this great work for the ruinous powers! Heres hoping for a official traitor guard from GW at some point!
This is great, I'm currently building a cult force for 30k, I'm using sister novitiates as the boxset comes with ten auto guns or close combat weapons (great kit for kit bash bits everyone) so I can easily pump out a force, I was about to use the spare filigree from my 40k sisters vehicle bits to spruce up an older leman Russ kit. but I'm gonna jump on this box set and pick up some newer sculpts.
Thanks for making that I start Solar auxilia to make my own renegade guard (with original scubba helmets printed) and I have many difficulty to have renegade auxilia inspirations.
Great conversion. The 40k ones could do with an update, but it's hard to really wish for them when so many other kits are in far more need of an update.
Everytime I see someone pull out some vintage etched brass I tear up a little. Really a highlight of when GW was more of model and hobby company. I wish they'd do them again, they're still super common in train and military hobby kits but it wouldn't surprise me if the margins suck. They're really for wanting to make something look that just little bit extra rather than something practical to just move units.
Fingers Crossed if the guard get a refresh then they will bring the Leman Russ in line with the old Auxillia with a bit of a blander feel to show to move towards STC uniformity
All solar aux units are absolutely dripping in detail. Crazy to see and really makes you think what’s the next evolution after this. Even the HH land raiders look and build up so nice.
Very nice to see more chaos guard out there! Just one point of detail, the old kit isn't actually the same Russ from 20 years ago, its actually a second rendition that came out in the late 2000's with extra guns. Its still old, but its got a little more detail and a better track system than the even older kit.
I've got a old Leman Russ and recently got my hands on the solar auxilia Russ and The level of detail is way better with it being a newer model and if love to see updates like this for other bit of armour units
My main gripe with the Leman Russ is how it's a mutant of WWI, inter-war and WWII tank design and would be completely impractical and wouldn't work. At some point I want to convert one to try and modernise it, whilst keeping as much of the Leman Russ asthetic. I'd extend the rear of the tank by sloping the rear of the tracks up and back like modern tanks, then mirror the shape with the rear of the Hull and flatten off the back decks. I'd also enlarge the turret so that it's plausible that 3 crew members could fit in it as well as the gun. Also you're definitely right about the gun barrel, that would need to be replaced. I'd also add the running kit which would be required like recovery and towing equipment, tool bins ect. Oh and the sponsons, they're a tough one, one the one hand get rid because they don't work, they only worked in WWI as the tank was only designed to clear trenches, on the other hand they are an iconic part of Warhammer tanks, so I may keep them.
That's actually what I like about it, it's a good representation of far humanity has fallen from grace since it height. It was originally a tractor for agriculture repurposed to war machine (iirc)
when i first saw it i where like wow it looks good, makes me want to make some traitor guards or guards who follow an inquisitor. then i saw that there are no sponsons so not usable for 40k, and i'm not gonna get it.
I don't know if it was a mistake for something but the last Leman Russ I got came with extra sponsons so I can just slap them on when I can finally get my hands on the wonderful tank!!!!
huh. It looks good. I though Dave was about to eat a pickle for lunch when the plastic-wrapped long green thing came out, but that was just milliput. The use of turquoise on the sides makes it seem like the tank is made from copper, instead of steel.
The eldar falcon and vyper are showing the age of the kits but still look good, I also play GSC and these 30k tanks and walkers seem perfect for the GSC
The vehicle upgrades would be amazing. I built 6 different vehicles in the last month, the the difference in detail, quality, and ease of assembly is night and day. Comparing the impulsor and gladiator to the baal predator and rhino is night and day. And for my land raiders, even though they're slightly different sizes I built the ones from the Age of Darkness boxes, and they are so wonderful. Compared to the standard, I would be so disappointed to go back.
With the original Leman Russ, the hull is *still* the 2nd edition hull, so far all they've done is update the turret, made it less boxy and added some armor panels to it and that was done in...I think 4th edition...so the hull is from like 1994 and the turret is probably from 2004-5ish. So the hull itself has, this year, officially turned 30 years old and I fully agree with that it is very much showing its age. It's just a shame the Solar Auxilia one doesn't come with Sponsons and all the gun options otherwise it could easily have been used as a full update to the original kit. I get the feeling that it won't be until we see the Guards 10th edition Codex that we see this kit introduced with an additional sponsons sprue fully replace the old kit.
I think in real life the blank front means you can customise it yourself and in univers its blank because it saves costs on what is effectively a tank that stands a good chance of not lasting very long.
It’s fun watching Dave spend his childhood hobby savings on absolute heresy! Edit: The old Russ is showing age, you can definitely see it was an old hand modelled chassis made with plasticard due to the complete lack of greebling. I think the sprue itself may even be a recut of the even older Russ (that had metal sponsons and weapons) with newer plastic parts added. They just need to make a 40K upgrade sprue that adds proper side sponsons to the 30k Russ and replaces the crew with a cadian/DKoK gunners/commanders.
I need that new Solar Auxilia models, of course. For Warhammer 40,000, of course. For my Imperial Guard army, of course. For genestealer infected Imperial Guard regiment. Certainly.
Regarding the slightly outdated tanks, I'd add though that slightly less detail may be a plus to a newbie to the hobby. Particularly given that a way to avoid getting bled white ($) starting a new Guard army is to go vehicle heavy. Experienced hobbyists will find ways to "add detail". On the other hand, if they ever did give us an AT70 or an AT83 for traitor guard, I think it would be ok for them to show off a bit in the detail, given that the peer CSM range is a bit detail heavy already. You sort of know what you are getting into.
At least the current 40k Leman Russ kit was remastered/retooled in the late 00s... The Eldar Falcon kit suffers from frequent warping that makes it a pain to build. Thing needs a full CAD remaster ASAP.
wow this looks awesome If you make more, putting the "sponsons" on the back of the turret like PeteTheWargamer did for his kreig conversion might help. This looks like a really cool squadren command tank, but seeing them all with the same improvised layout might look odd
Love the new Russ, but I still think the old one is fine. Not every model needs to be absolutely crammed full of detail, especially on vehicles, those flat surfaces can be a great place for freehand, decals, weathering, or customizing with your own bits! I’d rather keep the current Russ than get an updated kit that’s 20% more expensive and has 8000 more rivets. There are other models that need an update much more urgently. Like half the Eldar range!
Wonder if they're going to make the Carnadon light tank in plastic or if they're planning on doing a modern 40k remake kind of like the Rogal Dorn is for the Macharius.
I prefer the chunkier old Chimera to the newer one. I just wish they made all the 40k tanks slightly lower and longer so their different scale to the infantry wasnt as noticeable
Solar Auxilia russes never had sponson options in the rules unfortunately. The lack of sponsons on solar auxilia leman russes dates back to the first edition of horus heresy, when Solar Auxilia were depicted using the Death Korps of Krieg model range Mars Alpha Pattern Leman Russes. Those russes were originally a resin upgrade kit for the first leman russ model (which had ridiculously chunky sponsons and hull weapons). No official artwork krieg russ, nor any photographed one from the FW studio had sponsons due to this. The kit was eventually updated to work with the newer plastic leman russ (current 40k one), but FW didn't paint up any of those for their cabinets at warhammer world it seems. This aesthetic choice stuck with the mars alpha russes when they got reused for the horus heresy game and Solar Auxilia range, to the point where the 30k-exclusive Leman Russ Incinerator never came with the additional plastic sprue with the sponsons. Personally I think the russ does look much worse without sponsons, so the majority of my Krieg ones are sponsonless. It's just unfortunate that in 10th edition 40k, you are penalised for not taking the sponson weapons. That said, I don't think this new leman russ being sponson-less is really evidence of some grand GW conspiracy. I'd be more worried about the malcador moving to "Legends of the Horus Heresy" now it's leaving the FW 40k range. I do like these gimble mounts for the sponson weapons you've done, it feels like a good way of representing the weapons without changing the iconic russ silhouette!
Personally, I wanna see Mk 3 "Cratus" iron armor. I'm trying to put together a 30k but in 40k legion with very little modern tech. Mistakingly I bought a blood Angels Primaris squad, but I've already figured lore wise how this happened to become part of the relic legion. No, they're not going to be blood Angels. They'll be Bane of Tartarus kitbashed
I mean I don't know, just looks like a plastic version of the old FW lenan russes to me. They always looked better and had more finesse. The fact that it's a plastic kit is the great improvement here. I don't have qualms with resin myself, but I hear some folks do, and this makes superior looking russes avaliable to these people.
I think the argument is mostly that the old vehicles still “hold up” not that they look as good as new ones, obviously the technology has improved a lot, it’s just not something that should be prioritized when many factions till have fine cast infantry that look extremely derpy compared to modern infantry. Eventually they’ll get to the vehicles but it shouldn’t be a top priority
old LR better than new one, because new one has more rivets tnat need cut out before sculpt weld seams i think. Rivets on tanks is bad idea because it is automatic hits against crew without armor pen. lol. What about convert some semi-realistic warhammer tank next one, with ERA and additional parts like termooptics, aditional visors ect?
For me the old ones don't look out of place I mean: If you compare an interwar tank design as the super heavy T 30 soviet land battleship that guy wqs filled with rivets smol turrets etc. And you compare that with another súper heavy such as the Maus of the Germans just after the capitulation the maus looks like a brick on wheels because it was made using extremely thicc chuncks of metal and welding and not riveting... in the front didn't had even the tipical front gunner or even lights for ilumination even. This happens actually to not weird protorype concepts as this ones but for example tanks such as the M4 A1 sherman was curvy and just with the "necessary details" no rivets because everything was metal casting and welding while other casted tanks such as the IS- 3 the IS 2 or the T 34 had extremely big welding seams and casting on the armor of the casted parts themselves. This sayed? The old lemon needs some love from your part to add those welding seams with miluput and that takes time so the model should cost as any old model not from gw wich is around 20 something euros. And the new one with that detail "looks objectively cool" and the final result looks better without miliput or anything. To me I always like to take time with my models so it's not a problem that it has details or not becauae if not I add by myself and aometimes just like with the maus it's just flat.
I don't think theres anything wrong with the 40k Leman Russ. It's a basic battle tank meant to be pumped out en masse, it fits the design spec and still goes together great.
I'd love to get a new Mars pattern Razorback, Whirlwind, Rhino, Pred, Hunter...Not gonna, cuz they're ye olde style Marine vehicles, but a man can dream...
And it's actually quite new compared to a some other staple vehicles in the game. Unfortunately, for the Rhino & Land Raider (+variants), GW are unlikely to update them now they've got all the grav tanks for the loyalists. Chaos players would be lucky to get an updated "spikey bits" sprue to use with the improved plastic HH kits. The Eldar Falcon, on the other hand, the oldest "tank" kit in the game, comes frequently warped and requires clamps and stuff to assemble properly.
I love how nothing gets through without getting a backstory from Dave.

I mean I don't know, just looks like a plastic version of the old FW lenan russes to me. They always looked better and had more finesse. The fact that it's a plastic kit is the great improvement here. I don't have qualms with resin myself, but I hear some folks do, and this makes superior looking russes avaliable to these people.
wow ich really like it, if you convert normal gw kits into somethine unique.. and especially if you can tell a little story with the final model =)
You could make the solar auxilla infantry allies of the alpha Legion
I think the argument is mostly that the old vehicles still “hold up” not that they look as good as new ones, obviously the technology has improved a lot, it’s just not something that should be prioritized when many factions till have fine cast infantry that look extremely derpy compared to modern infantry. Eventually they’ll get to the vehicles but it shouldn’t be a top priority
Awesome and gruesome!
The malcador is not a legends tank. Its a legitimate FW option!
old LR better than new one, because new one has more rivets tnat need cut out before sculpt weld seams i think. Rivets on tanks is bad idea because it is automatic hits against crew without armor pen. lol. What about convert some semi-realistic warhammer tank next one, with ERA and additional parts like termooptics, aditional visors ect?
11 th edition should be the guard edition with traitors and loyalists
Great video 😊
How did you do the mud effects? what was in that spray bottle
They should re name it the “Lorgar Aurellion” Tank.
I'd love to get a new Mars pattern Razorback, Whirlwind, Rhino, Pred, Hunter...Not gonna, cuz they're ye olde style Marine vehicles, but a man can dream...
Could you also convert the infantry?
the current 40k leman russ kit is 14 or 15 years old and it shows.
Do you know if those trench rails will fit on a rhino chasis
12:10 I think he meant with an innapropriate paint, not tank?
This is so cool
what snips are you using? they look nice!
Godhand for my personal stuff, very expensive, very good
