I loved it, but I will admit on first watch I caught you taking a pot out of the microwave and thought I missed a hot tip about microwaving paints. Lol.
RIGHT?! I had to scroll back and rewatch the part where he takes the Agrax from Jazza’s armpit. I laughed so hard. Especially because Jazza did such a good job of keeping a straight face and focusing on what he was doing until the end (last half a second) where the smile hits his eyes. 😅
I was thinking the same thing. If there’s any Legion that could legit look like any other it’s the Alpha Legion. The best response you could have, Dave, is to pause and look into someone’s eyes and say “That’s what they WANT you to think…”
That defiler is honestly one of the best models I've ever seen. It's so sad seeing that kit just be so old an sad, but that brings out such an old love.
The best part was seeing the "little kid paint job" on the first mini, it was like showing us your baby photos, no matter how embarrassing they might be. And the rapid step-by-step explanation of the final paint job is terrific! I want to see that in just about every video from now on.
Really enjoyed watching the repainting of a model and hearing how your Alpha Legion came to be. Also, love the bit with the paints hidden in obscure places!! but hearing your story of life and the hobby was genuinely enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. I'd love this kinda style video from other members. Love you guys
Seeing journeys like yours and the evolution of your hobby time really helps with knowing Im doing alright going into my second year in the hobby. Fortunately I started this hobby with the best the mini hobby has been in terms of models and painting as technology really has expanded its accessibility. I cant imagine where my modeling and painting will be after a decade or 2 like so many I follow have already experienced. It gets me excited and motivated to push myself and enjoy the ride
It is always reassuring hearing from the professionals that looking back on your crafting journey and thinking "why did I do that (for so long/ that way/ at all)?" is normal. Seeing the progression is great, and the work in progress on the model during the video made for an interesting change of pace along the way. And based off Dave reading through the list of paints that he used, I think that the next Bob Ross video (probably on Jazza's channel, but Tabletop Time could join in as well) should be painting a mini/ diorama in the style of Bob Ross.
My 2024 army project is Dark Mech & it never occurred to me to use the dunecrawler top on the defiler legs... I may make a couple of these myself, thankyou for the idea 🙏🙏
That was fun - especially the frozen pot. My own Space Marines have a history of evolution, they just became Blackshields, and the idea of hanging on to the older ones appeals to me. The current colours you chose for the Alpha Legion are superb, but seeing the progression was fun.
What an great video. So cool to hear about your journey and wow, what a model Omegon is! That scheme pops! I was also struck by how much I liked baby Dave's blood stump marking idea. It's so fitting for the universe in that "turn it up to 11" sort of way. Clearly you'd nailed that aspect of Chaos and 40k from an early age.
I always enjoy these more personal takes. I could watch any mini painting youtuber for tips but this kind of video always means that bit more. UA-cam helps me feel part of a community but never more than when watching someone get excited about their own personal projects and not just painting for a sponsor
Important lessons learned in this video: 1) Dave was once as bad at painting as we all were. 2) Regular practice means that we can get better, just like he did. 3) Dave keeps his paints in really weird places!
Ive never painted a miniature, played a tabletop game, or been to a Games workshop. I've watched since the channeled started having watched Jazza for a year or two before and i love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your hobby with us.
We love you Dave, we love everyone, I hope you all go into where you guys came up from and how you all came together, I love the family you guys are and the community that has come with it, love you mate keep up the progression
DAVE. The little details you have on your custom models is AMAZEBALLS. In particular, with the Defiler, the Imperial Guard arm that is severed and still hanging onto the gun on the base. It’s so awesome I can’t even!
Dave, do not knock your painting skills. You are absolutely amazing at painting minis. I would even argue that some of your mini's came out even better then some of Murray's paint jobs.
its awesome to see your evolution. i look back on my first marines (aka 3 months ago) and im thinking "how will i ever come close to any of these youtube people" seeing you're progression rly inspires. btw, I'm rly enjoying painting each mini a different scheme, so ive decided they're just all alpha legion, rules be damned
Grabbing a bottle of streak n grim out of Jazza's armpit without him batting an eye was much more funny than I thought it could be. Loved the b roll. Might be too much if this is done in every video, but every now and then would be really funny to see
Loved their lore! Specially the portrayal of the Arkfane and the whole mutual benefit thinf. It's an overlook aspect of 40K where everyone seens to do things "for the emprah", "greater good" or "for the dark gods". Really wish to see more of them on this channel.
10:55 The severed hands on the heavy bolter really made me chuckle... Hmmm, that sounds worse and weirder than I meant it to. The Defiler's painted scales are very impressive. That Ravaged Star's obliterator is so much cooler than the GW original; though do have a soft spot for the converted Centurion idea.
Just like the Imperial Aquila. Eyes open to the past to influence your future. I will have to admit when i used to paint more that 15 years ago, i never used to repaint my own models. I love to get back into painting minis just the occasional single character model.
This was incredibly cool to watch, im all for the TTT mini, mini documentaries! It's really inspiring and encouraging to see the growth and growing pains of a skill, especially from someone who consistently has results at your level, Dave. A life very well lived for your legion! Also, that huge boy is absolutly amazing. I actually feel bad for the little dude whos now just hands on a turret.
I always appreciate a good alpha legion homebrew, I havent been in the hobby very long. But my first army is alpha legion and I love the combinations of alpha legion visuals and historical inspirations into their aesthetic. That defiler is the only conversion I’ve seen that makes me actually like it, too many people maintain the hybrid fleshy demon parts.
Thats what I hate most about the new chaos direction. Get this flesh junk off everything. Daemon Engines are daemons forced into machines to fight for mans whim, not daemons fused with machines all buddy buddy
I remember seeing that defiler in a video where where you showed the shop and it was breefly seen in the display cabinet. Happy to finally be able to see it in detail :)
Honestly, it's great seeing you continue childhood dreams well into adulthood. My current army is a homebrew chapter and I'm going to roll with it. I've got a Primaris squad but I'm wanting mainly firstborn Mk3 armors and such. My second army I want to build is a Primaris army of Nurgle.
thats the best Alpha Legion scheme ive seen for models that can be upcycled i will repaint them, but i will keep my favorite example or two from the group and stow them the ability to go back and look at old work is super valuable, especially when you hit a wall and have major issues with getting a certain technique or look right going back and seeing just how far you have come really inspires you to pick up the tools and try again ... also the wandering through memory lane is nice but i certainly dont need 2000 points of models that i cant or wont ever use again so if i can put them to better use, i do after primaris made it clear they were the new standard, i took all my old marines are true scaled them been chipping away at the project and now with 10th, the distinction between marines is gone, so my custom chapters time to shine is soon but i made sure to keep some of my classics intact
Amazing paint scheme, it has its own sense of colorshift without being colorshift. It's Non-Colorshift Colorshift, I haven't seen that until now really cool. How's that for a journey milestone you may have coined a new tech.
Love the Defiler really good conversion. I fully understand wow your X chapter or leagion looks good when htats what you are. For years every random person loved my Salamanders but they were really Sons of Medusa.
Really enjoyed the journey of this video, and the repainting of thr model - and especially the locating of paints. I've been lucky to have never needed to sell my old models (though should probably sell the models I know I'll never actually build, paint, use) but I have repainted some. My regret here is not taking pics of my old work in order to see the progress I've made in skill and technique (or sometimes just the quality of the materials used). Alternatively, i can memorialise an era of my journey by keeping one of the old squads, and repainting the rest so they get used. But it's a personal thing, i guess. Great video anyway. And would still love to see more Traitor Guard.
the fact that your alpha legions were mistaken as other legions should be seen as a compliment when ya think about it, means they infiltrated successfully x'D Me i like to go with a black primer, some gunmetal metalic, use some red and purple tones for shading, ultra chrome highlights, then some turqoise with some extra blue speed paints(contrast over that. sometimes ill wash with some purple or blue tones, depending on what i want. Though i also try new ways of painting them all the time, see if i can get that exact tone i want, experiment besides, its alpha legion, color shift armor is basicly their thing (have also tried greenstuff worlds color shift paints for em)
Id love to see any videos about those centurion-obliterator conversions, if you were to do that again and paint them like you do now that would be awesome.
Practice is the most important, thanks for illustrating it so well. Who hid your paints around the studio? :D I really love those elements in your videos. Great video, great paint job! We want moooore!
Decades ago I bought a couple of Nazghuls, one which I intended to paint up and gift to my then girlfriend and another which owuld be a practice piece. I still have the practice one and I've tossed aorund the idea of repainting it given my improved painting skills
I won’t lie but looking at that model I know it’s suppose to be that charcter you made. But because of how it has been painted I see it as a new charcter all on its own. It being so beautifully made so a part of me if I were able to give him a name it would be either going of the Charybdis the lord of this alpha legions army. He just gives that overwhelming and yet also terrifying and overwhelming presence. As if the very tides of any battle could change when he and his army come onto the battle field.
@@TabletopTimewell I can’t wait to see what other hombre characters come out of this custom alpha legion task force. Part of me thinks that for a demon prince it may take up bits of other beasts from Greek. Hell for a warlord titan. (Titanicus not forge word) I get the feeling its name would be inspired off of maybe either leviathan or even typhon.
Hey Murray, loved the paint job. I was wondering how exactly you got that subtle greenish-gold on the model. Was it Necro Gold with just a little bit of Coelia Greenshade on top? And what did you highlight with? edit: I should've finished the video first lol. The answers were right there
That b roll of finding the paints in increasingly absurd places is hilarious. I love it.
Im so glad at least one person enjoyed this hairbrained idea!
DITTO
Your marines are sometimes mistaken for the Night Lords, sometimes for the Sons of Horus. Alpharius is proud of their mimicry abilities
I was thinking the same thing. If there’s any Legion that could legit look like any other it’s the Alpha Legion. The best response you could have, Dave, is to pause and look into someone’s eyes and say “That’s what they WANT you to think…”
Ok, that defiler is much nicer than baseline tbh
My proudest creation
Wow, what a nice Emperor's Children paintjob!
Nah but i kid, great job man.
That defiler is the pinnacle of chaos engineering
Loved the vid! Would love to hear Murray's and Jen's origin stories as well!!!
Alpharius looks amazing as an Emperors Children! 🐍
But in all seriousness this paint scheme is stunning 🔥
That defiler is honestly one of the best models I've ever seen. It's so sad seeing that kit just be so old an sad, but that brings out such an old love.

If you lack "OLD" Nuln oil, I strongly recommend Pro Acryl Black Wash - it's virtually and for all intents and purposes 1:1 with pre update Nuln oil.

I mean...to be fair, having your Alpha legion marines being miscategorized as other chapters, is the most alpha legion thing ever.
It is always reassuring hearing from the professionals that looking back on your crafting journey and thinking "why did I do that (for so long/ that way/ at all)?" is normal. Dave, the fact you haven't shown that beautiful, awesome defiler before is criminal! Build another one, show us how!
That was fun - especially the frozen pot. My own Space Marines have a history of evolution, they just became Blackshields, and the idea of hanging on to the older ones appeals to me. The current colours you chose for the Alpha Legion are superb, but seeing the progression was fun.

Absolutely the best example of "Trust the process"
The new color scheme looks AMAZING!

Dave! You did an amazing job on this re-paint. Wow I absolutely love it! Can’t wait to see more of your Alpha legion!
Is there a picture somewhere of that defiler ? I gotta see that free hand closeup
Its featured in the video
@TabletopTime We should probably start taking good photos and posting them on insta hey!
DAVE. The little details you have on your custom models is AMAZEBALLS. In particular, with the Defiler, the Imperial Guard arm that is severed and still hanging onto the gun on the base. It’s so awesome I can’t even!

lighting makes such a massive difference between the painting process and the final product, looks great

Man, these videos about hearing how you guys improved your personal painting style are great. It really makes me excited to keep painting my models

Oh I just like to insert weird gags when I make videos that involve a lot of waffling on about myself - Glad you liked em
The nautical coloring tying in with the lore is so well done
Loved their lore! Specially the portrayal of the Arkfane and the whole mutual benefit thinf. It's an overlook aspect of 40K where everyone seens to do things "for the emprah", "greater good" or "for the dark gods".
Really wish to see more of them on this channel.
Thanks for taking the time to read the article glad you liked it
Thank you for the journey through your chapter, Dave.
It was really inspiring. I can't wait to see where you go from here!
Dude that defiler is inspired! Going to have to replicate
The defiler is amazing. I love the way the flails let a trail on the base. The asymmetry from the dunecrawler really works wonders here!!
10:55 The severed hands on the heavy bolter really made me chuckle... Hmmm, that sounds worse and weirder than I meant it to.
The Defiler's painted scales are very impressive.

Stunning model, thanks for sharing! I especially loved the stroll through your history
No one told Dave he had paint on his nose?
Second comment. Nobody told me because I was working solo - I cry 100x
Love hearing about your journey in the hobby. That Defiler is so cool!!
What a greatly told story! I loved the through line with the Lord painting.
That turntable zoom effect was so crispy. Great work mate!
I love these videos because they bring so much nostalgia from my own hobby journey.
I always appreciate a good alpha legion homebrew, I havent been in the hobby very long. Thank you so much for sharing your story as a painter with us.
Looks amazing I aspire to have the brush skull of you keep up the great work mate
Thanks for the encouragement!
I remember seeing that defiler in a video where where you showed the shop and it was breefly seen in the display cabinet. Happy to finally be able to see it in detail :)
Really enjoyed listening and seeing your hobby journey with your Alpha Legion. Reminds me why I got into this hobby 🙂
Honestly, it's great seeing you continue childhood dreams well into adulthood. My current army is a homebrew chapter and I'm going to roll with it. I've got a Primaris squad but I'm wanting mainly firstborn Mk3 armors and such.

Really awesome humor in the B roll. Thank you for sharing your journey….. beautifully painted model 😊
thats the best Alpha Legion scheme ive seen
for models that can be upcycled i will repaint them, but i will keep my favorite example or two from the group and stow them
the ability to go back and look at old work is super valuable, especially when you hit a wall and have major issues with getting a certain technique or look right
going back and seeing just how far you have come really inspires you to pick up the tools and try again ... also the wandering through memory lane is nice
but i certainly dont need 2000 points of models that i cant or wont ever use again
so if i can put them to better use, i do
after primaris made it clear they were the new standard, i took all my old marines are true scaled them
been chipping away at the project and now with 10th, the distinction between marines is gone, so my custom chapters time to shine is soon
but i made sure to keep some of my classics intact
The repaint is insane!
Really nice job. Colour choices are great. Thanks.
Alpha Legion is something I'll always enjoy from you guys, You do it in such a unique way, I am truly flattered with your take of me (I am alpharius)
Damn that Defiler is Golden Demon Worthy. It's incredible dude, you should be extremely proud.
Kermit corpse metallics are the best..... plus, the leftovers make such a great dish, oui oui!
Incredible watching the evolution of the army. Makes me want to dig out my Sons of Malice
Amazing paint scheme, it has its own sense of colorshift without being colorshift. It's Non-Colorshift Colorshift, I haven't seen that until now really cool. How's that for a journey milestone you may have coined a new tech.
That defiler is insanely cool
The defiler is awesome!
The rubble at the base of the defiler’s flails adds a lot
21:07 I don't think I've seen Emperor's Children done with such a deep purple before but it's a really cool touch.
Love the Defiler really good conversion. I fully understand wow your X chapter or leagion looks good when htats what you are. For years every random person loved my Salamanders but they were really Sons of Medusa.
Omegon and the defiler are amazing!

I’m going to keep my paints al over the house to, my wife will like that😂
that obliterator is brilliant
This beautiful addiction sponsored by Squarespace and You, the viewer.
I love the defiler!!

Paint this theme, they come out with Emp Children and they have it lol
Love the paint job. Also, finding the paints in absurd places made me laugh.

When are we getting a Blood Stump conversion and painting tutorial?
Awesome evolution of your Night lords, Sons of Horus, I meant to say Alpha Legion
oh wow those are all the exact places I store my paints too
Awesome scheme 😊
Excellent video.
not gonna lie, the painting of their symbol with the stump of a loyalists arm is actually pretty cool

This model was painted by Dave, the blue wiggle
Great job!
This a scheme that would look good on Alpha Legion, Stormcast, and Thousand Sons.
Should I be cheeky Dave and say nice Ultramarine??? Hope to see it in the store cabnets, or even better on the tables in store
What did you use for the "alpha legion terminator lord" conversion?
I really like to see the personal journeys, thanks for sharing, hope games workshop doesn't do you dirty with this new paint job 😂
oakleigh warhammer store's current manager is sick, friendly guy
Got to ask, why were you microwaving that shade pot?
missed you at adepticon 2024, Hopefully you and team will be going again in near future, Alpha Legion Warband meet up, Time to find our Harrow Master
Where can I get that model you used for Omegon?
I have trouble painting the fine details; i’ve managed to paint maybe 4 minatures to at least basic tabletop ready while the rest are just primed.
