@@davidcolesr.8628 There is a brand new tank, sending unit and pump in the back of my F250. I threw 5 gallons in it and primed it. I knew immediately what was going on. I switched it back to the front tank and haven't touched it since.
I dropped the fuel tank on my 85 C20 Suburban and changed the sending unit and cleaned it out. It actually went really well. The fuel gauge doesn't come off of the E line for like 5 gallons.. but it's a 34 gallon fuel tank so y'know. 😂

I also like the fact that he's working on vehicles that I would have bought myself, rather than just square bodies and old 4 door Chevy's that I'd never own. GM rotors in the mid 70s had groves around the center to help evacuate brake dust and cool the rotor. Didn't work but they tried. Also, that limp fuel line is what ethanol does to old style fuel lines.
FWIW on one of these revivals, put a little of the old gas on a piece of bare metal. Let it evaporate. If you can drag your finger across the residue left behind and it doesn't stick or feel tacky, you can run it through and it won't stick the valves or carb
Back around 1975 i bought a 73 Grand Prix and was told by the salesman it had a 350. A few days later some guy in a Nova 454 kept running up on my bumper until i floored it and we got into it right there. I was shocked at the power of my '350' engine. I left the guy in my dust. So right then and there i pulled over and popped the hood. The stickers all said it was actually a 400. Still couldn't understand how a 400 would have dusted a Nova 454 SS. I also noticed i was getting about 8-10 mpg! So i took it to a shop to see if they could figure it out. I left it at the shop and a friend picked me up and took me to work. That evening after work he dropped me off to pick up my car and what the mechanic told me made it all clear. It wasn't a 350 or a 400. Someone before me had changed the engine out and put a high performance 455 in it. Also it had been built and dyno tested at 532 Horses at 4200 rpm. I loved that car but ended up selling it and buying a Toyota for gas mileage. So your car brings back fond memories of a better time and place for me and my musclecars. Mine was burgandy with white vinyl top. It was a beauty. I have owned 128 musclecars in my 70+ years including two Dodge Vipers, a lot of Chevelle SS models, Mustangs etc... but i think of my 73 Grand Prix a lot. Luxury with bestial power.

One thing I have learnt over the years with my dad and uncle who were the car people I knew growing up, is that the cars they remember the most are the piles of crap that gave them issues, those are the cars with all the cool stories. The car my dad had when I was a baby was affectionately nicknamed "the tragedies" for it kept breaking down at the worst times.

I had a quadrajet float that did swell from fuel with etanol so it got stuck and flooded the hell out of the carb. But every time i disassembled the carb it had evaporated so the float had shrunk again... Last time it happened before i found the problem i had to drive 300 miles and left foot brake in a constantly flooded big block Buick with a caravan behind 😅

When I bought my 442, it came with those hideous mud flaps. Like you, I yanked then off ASAP. Then went cruising/dragging that night. The next morning, there was molten rubber down both 1/4's! I sheepishly put those damned flaps back on.... Lol
Wow, this brings back memories. I had a 76 in gray with a 350. My wife a 2 tone brown 77 with a 403 Olds. I got rid of the 76 in 1991, the 77 in 2021. It was full of contradictions The sheer size of everything, the hood so long you could strap a full size matress onto it but it lacked any kind of "go". The trunk could fit 3 people but the huge spare tire in the middle of the trunk floor ate up tons of space. Boy did I love it, and hate it.
I had a 75 grandville brougham 455 4door no post back in high school. I decorated the ceiling with dango ball fringe. My favorite part about that Pontiac was how fast the heater worked in Michigan winters.

The t-tops made in the 1970s gms are an aftermarket factory option installed by hurst. This was due to the success of the smokey and the bandit movie. Its likely hurst has replacement glass that is the same size even if the trim is different.
Lovin' the '76 Pontiac Grand Prix content. I use to own a '77 Grand Prix way back in the day, '84 to '87. Had the power moon roof, black with a black velour bench seat interior with fold down arm rest. So comfortable to drive, was an LJ with a 400/400 drivetrain, loved the sound with the flipped air cleaner lid.(why haven't you tried that yet?) LOL
Those tires that were fighting you, I have a suggestion. If you're not keeping the tires and you plan on junking them, take a pneumatic end cutter and cut the bead. If you're careful it can easily be done without damaging the rim. Main thing though is you have to take a tire spoon and get part of the bead outside the rim at least somewhat or else you won't be able to reach things too well. (something to keep in mind for the future)
Heh. I never thought of doing it on a car tire, but I've cut motorcycle tires off by using a sabersaw and cutting the sidewall all the way around on both sides. Once the carcass falls away, you can just shake the beadrings off the rim. Probably be good to break the beads first, though. 😊

Rallye 2's are my favorite gm steel wheel, I've had them on a 68 firebird, 70 lemans, 73 formula, 77 firebird, 79 firebird and a 68 Malibu, all the same set, 15x8's that came on the 800$ 77 firebird i bought in 1990, wrapped poor thing around a large bush, i.e. tree two weeks after i bought it, pulled the sbc and trans and rims and scrapped it for 125$
If you have to deal with crappy fuel systems, try buying a couple 80's Ford Aerostar fuel filters instead of the clear ones. They are the size of an oil filter and have a HUGE amount of filtering area available vs the clear Amazon ones. They won't help with a plugged fuel sock, but if you can get fuel to it, it should get you home.
I used to have a '74 Grand Prix. White with a white vinyl top and sort of a maroon interior. Had a red pinstripe along the beltline, no T tops, and standard silver/grey Pontiac Rally II wheels. Sure would be cool to have a car like that again. Cars from that time were SO easy to work on.
I OWNED ONE OF THESE BOAT ACHORS....IT LOVED THE WINTER TIME SNOW DRIVES.....Nobody thought that it could work, pulling people out of snow drifts, ditches, and tree rows......but it did.....I RAN IT DRY(NO OIL,ANTIFREESE,PS FLUID ETC....) THE BEARINGS ON EVERYTHING SCREAMING DOWN THE HIGHWAY........The car is a durable tank that could leave you stranded if it didn't like you......CAR HAS A PERSONALITY! ENJOY!
Thank you so much for doing these videos. I owned four of these '76 Grand Prixs (and a '77) back in the 80's and not a day goes by that I don't dream of owning one again. I’ve always loved Pontiacs. My father had a few, and I’ve owned several. Back in the day they were just so good looking. Most of them road like Caddies, and had great engine options.
The best thing about your channel my friend is that you don't sugarcoat or hide the fact that shit is going to break and there's nothing you can do about it. But you do your best to work around it and make it work.
I had a really clean, straight, well cared for '73 GP SJ once at a time in my life I could not keep it. It needed an engine, and the idiot I traded it to was a mechanic I had worked with who needed a car. Apparently, he was also a tweeker and he sold it to the pick a part for another day of his own misery. Seeing that one in the wrecking yard made me feel a little sick inside.
My old Pontiac, first fuel pump was all gumed up. The second one had striped threads in the Block were it bolted up. It all works now, no hesitations in a week. Thats one kool ride, dig the T tops.
I've been using those connectors for about a year now and they are great. In upstate ny where i am everything is difficult on any vehicle more than 3 years old. Simple jobs turn into replacement bushings and bolts since they have become 1, ive only had the luxury of brake lines coming lose a few times . Usually replacing lines is the name of the game and also i don't know anything about rotors so bad that they have had a meeting with the angle grinder and some new pads . I just heard some stories or something i surely didn't do anything like that several times
I would say that Rick Debruhl just did a walk around of a t-top 76 Olds 442 with T-tops for Steve Magnante at Desert Auto, but I think those T-tops were broken as well. Very cool car, regardless, thanks for saving it!

Great to see the old Pontiac. It brings it way back for me. My first NEW car was a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix. Hondurus Maroon with a with a white vinyl top and red crushed velour interiour. I think it was around $6,000 .

I used to have a 1973 Monte Carlo and you have to be very careful in the winter time because cats would get up there and sleep in that tube next to the radiator and if you didn't honk the horn and you started it up they only had one way out
This is how we lost our first cat in early spring of 1975 when I was 4... my dad tried to start their '74 Monte Carlo in the morning to head to work. My parents actually told us that the cat was going to live on a farm after him and my uncles were able to remove it.
Dalton, You inspired me to get busy and change the ball joints, tie Rod ends, brakes, oil and filter, and charge the AC on my 2007 GMC Yukon XL. Now its ready for vacation. anybody that says doing all that is easy is either a ASE mechanic with a well stocked shop, and a lift, or a crack addict. It is not easy but it can be done in 4-5 hours or less.
Local oil change place left the oil filter O-ring in my wife's '05 Pacifica a few years back. She wanted to go for groceries afterward and made it 11 miles before the engine seized up. They gave us Blue Book price for it.
The algorithm apperently isn't liking you, forgot about this gem of a channel, watched almost every episode and liked every one of them, but now I can binge on the videos I've missed and this one is just as good as the other ones, probably my favorite channel atm in terms of integrity and non scripted entertainment. It just gets better and never dissapoints.
In the early '80s, I was working as a lead line mechanic for a used car rental company. The bane of my existence was an AMC Hornet with a straight 6 that had a bad habit of dropping dead for, apparently, no good reason whatsoever. Then, after a few minutes rest, it might run fine for10 or 3 or 40 miles before repeating the process all over again. So... rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel pump, filters, blew out the fuel lines, coil, plugs and wires etc. Didn't help the problem a bit, but, boy howdy did the beast run fine when it did run. Finally, it occurred to me that there could only be one thing left that could, possibly, be happening that would fit the bill. I jacked it up and removed the rubber fuel line at the metal fitting on the tank and, sure enough, when it had been assembled, they had jammed the hose on and it grooved the hose so that a long, thin, flap of rubber would slip forward under full throttle, shutting off the flow until the engine starved and shut down. Then, it would relax back into it's normal shape until the next time. It was infuriating to know how much time and effort, money and knuckles it took to diagnose a sixty cent (at the time) piece of rubber hose being the cause of all that trouble. I took it out for a test ride and didn't come back for an hour. When I did, I threw tossed the keys in the "ready to go" box and went back to work on some other ones. I told the boss that if it broke down on anyone else like it had been, I would buy it and torch it. He never had another complaint on it while I worked there.
The newer the product the more complicated and fancier, but they are designed to be more expensive to make/fix. Old cars were solid, i had a Fiat 125 Sports and i ran into a concrete pylon, only had minor denting to the car but took a huge chunk out of the pylon and mechanically it wasn't great but it kept going despiute being decades old.
Good mechanics.. ya’ll are doing a good job finding all the old wore out parts.. this is a great car from the past , I drove a ‘73 Grand Prix just like this one for 22 years .. and it was basically trouble free I drove my Grand Prix very hard after drinking lots of beer and laying miles of rubber and out run the law a couple of times with my car .. I had a saying back then .. this car comes alive at 95 mph .. and after that it would do 120 plus .. My thoughts after restoring cars for 50 plus years is always start with a new fuel tank and all parts related to the fuel system.Also of note my G.P. had a points distributor and once a year I would put in a new set .. last year for points .. you have a very legendary car .. I was 17 or 18 and seen a car just like this for sale at a car lot, same year same color. I wanted that car so bad, I dreamed about cruising around in it on the strip. Sadly i just couldn't come up with enough down payment i needed at the bank to buy it before it got sold... i was so disappointed. Later on i ended up with a 72 Olds cutlass for less than half the price and it was a decent ride so i ended up redeemed. Still though, my first choice was the grand pre, and back then it was cool ride to have, turned many heads.

Man you guys make me miss my old 76 GP. I had deep dish ET slot mags with super wide 50s on the back. I couldn't afford air shock's so I twisted together 2 set's of coil springs just to get the ass end up high enough to not slice up my tires. She looked pretty mean old school hot rod look. God I loved that car.
5:42 without a doubt, if anyone is using solder ferrules, you should have a deflector! And loop and hook method prior to shrinking down. And always always make sure you’re solder is melted all the way around

I had an issue just like this on my 83 S-10. Turned out that i had tightened the worm gear clamp down a bit too tightly on the plastic fuel filter and it was restricting flow. Boy i felt dumb but at least it was an easy fix. I discovered this only after i took of the bed and inspected the fuel tank, fuel pump, and every bit of fuel line lol.
Those little solder shrink deals are great. I've been told by a legit flight line mechanic they're even used on fighter jet repairs. Good enough for how fast and dangerous my junk is!

I had a similar problem with my CJ7, I blew compressed air back into the supply line from the fuel pump and I felt it blow the plugged sock off the end of the sending unit. I had a filter like you have ahead of the pump as well and that kept the pump clean, it fixed it, but I still ended up putting a new tank and sending unit in it as the old tank had some rust in it and the thing was really cheap. I recommend a filter ahead of the fuel pump, I think your old pump probably has a bunch of trash in it. These things can be...trying...
Im on the same boat you are. Im trying to start up my 68 Mustang for the first time since 2010 and kept telling myself the tank just needed a little flush, but when I cleared out my trunk and got a look at the tank it had bloated up and turned into a barrel and none of the mounting holes even lined up anymore. Speaking of mounting, it only had 1 bolt holding it down so who knows what happened there🤷♂️

I had a quadrajet float that did swell from fuel with etanol so it got stuck and flooded the hell out of the carb.
But every time i disassembled the carb it had evaporated so the float had shrunk again...
Last time it happened before i found the problem i had to drive 300 miles and left foot brake in a constantly flooded big block Buick with a caravan behind 😅

When I bought my 442, it came with those hideous mud flaps. Like you, I yanked then off ASAP.
Then went cruising/dragging that night. The next morning, there was molten rubber down both 1/4's! I sheepishly put those damned flaps back on.... Lol
Wow, this brings back memories. I had a 76 in gray with a 350. My wife a 2 tone brown 77 with a 403 Olds. I got rid of the 76 in 1991, the 77 in 2021.
It was full of contradictions The sheer size of everything, the hood so long you could strap a full size matress onto it but it lacked any kind of "go". The trunk could fit 3 people but the huge spare tire in the middle of the trunk floor ate up tons of space.
Boy did I love it, and hate it.
I had a 75 grandville brougham 455 4door no post back in high school. I decorated the ceiling with dango ball fringe. My favorite part about that Pontiac was how fast the heater worked in Michigan winters.
For the top shock mounts I bent an open end wrench to fit in there on my 76 Monte Carlo.

The t-tops made in the 1970s gms are an aftermarket factory option installed by hurst. This was due to the success of the smokey and the bandit movie. Its likely hurst has replacement glass that is the same size even if the trim is different.

Lovin' the '76 Pontiac Grand Prix content. I use to own a '77 Grand Prix way back in the day, '84 to '87. Had the power moon roof, black with a black velour bench seat interior with fold down arm rest. So comfortable to drive, was an LJ with a 400/400 drivetrain, loved the sound with the flipped air cleaner lid.(why haven't you tried that yet?) LOL
Those tires that were fighting you, I have a suggestion. If you're not keeping the tires and you plan on junking them, take a pneumatic end cutter and cut the bead. If you're careful it can easily be done without damaging the rim. Main thing though is you have to take a tire spoon and get part of the bead outside the rim at least somewhat or else you won't be able to reach things too well. (something to keep in mind for the future)
Heh. I never thought of doing it on a car tire, but I've cut motorcycle tires off by using a sabersaw and cutting the sidewall all the way around on both sides. Once the carcass falls away, you can just shake the beadrings off the rim. Probably be good to break the beads first, though. 😊

Rallye 2's are my favorite gm steel wheel, I've had them on a 68 firebird, 70 lemans, 73 formula, 77 firebird, 79 firebird and a 68 Malibu, all the same set, 15x8's that came on the 800$ 77 firebird i bought in 1990, wrapped poor thing around a large bush, i.e. tree two weeks after i bought it, pulled the sbc and trans and rims and scrapped it for 125$
If you have to deal with crappy fuel systems, try buying a couple 80's Ford Aerostar fuel filters instead of the clear ones. They are the size of an oil filter and have a HUGE amount of filtering area available vs the clear Amazon ones. They won't help with a plugged fuel sock, but if you can get fuel to it, it should get you home.
I used to have a '74 Grand Prix. White with a white vinyl top and sort of a maroon interior. Had a red pinstripe along the beltline, no T tops, and standard silver/grey Pontiac Rally II wheels. Sure would be cool to have a car like that again. Cars from that time were SO easy to work on.
I OWNED ONE OF THESE BOAT ACHORS....IT LOVED THE WINTER TIME SNOW DRIVES.....Nobody thought that it could work, pulling people out of snow drifts, ditches, and tree rows......but it did.....I RAN IT DRY(NO OIL,ANTIFREESE,PS FLUID ETC....) THE BEARINGS ON EVERYTHING SCREAMING DOWN THE HIGHWAY........The car is a durable tank that could leave you stranded if it didn't like you......CAR HAS A PERSONALITY!

Thank you so much for doing these videos. I owned four of these '76 Grand Prixs (and a '77) back in the 80's and not a day goes by that I don't dream of owning one again. They were beautiful cars (the front end on those was a work of art) and they don't get enough love. Don't give up, keep at it, and get that baby back on the road! Love the channel guys!

I’ve always loved Pontiacs. My father had a few, and I’ve owned several. Back in the day they were just so good looking. Most of them road like Caddies, and had great engine options.
The best thing about your channel my friend is that you don't sugarcoat or hide the fact that shit is going to break and there's nothing you can do about it. But you do your best to work around it and make it work.

I had a really clean, straight, well cared for '73 GP SJ once at a time in my life I could not keep it. It needed an engine, and the idiot I traded it to was a mechanic I had worked with who needed a car. Apparently, he was also a tweeker and he sold it to the pick a part for another day of his own misery. Seeing that one in the wrecking yard made me feel a little sick inside.

My old Pontiac, first fuel pump was all gumed up. The second one had striped threads in the Block were it bolted up. It all works now, no hesitations in a week. Thats one kool ride, dig the T tops.
You can tell by the quality install of the Christmas tree JD is a natural at detailing.
I've been using those connectors for about a year now and they are great. In upstate ny where i am everything is difficult on any vehicle more than 3 years old. Simple jobs turn into replacement bushings and bolts since they have become 1, ive only had the luxury of brake lines coming lose a few times . Usually replacing lines is the name of the game and also i don't know anything about rotors so bad that they have had a meeting with the angle grinder and some new pads . I just heard some stories or something i surely didn't do anything like that several times

I would say that Rick Debruhl just did a walk around of a t-top 76 Olds 442 with T-tops for Steve Magnante at Desert Auto, but I think those T-tops were broken as well. Very cool car, regardless, thanks for saving it!

Me and my folks are loving this. Dad had a 77 SJ that was ordered for the big money of 7 grand if i rember right. So many good memories riding in that car. By the way my mom think she rembers your gto she grew up there. And my uncle still lives there
Great to see the old Pontiac. It brings it way back for me. My first NEW car was a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix. Hondurus Maroon with a with a white vinyl top and red crushed velour interiour. I think it was around $6,000 .

I used to have a 1973 Monte Carlo and you have to be very careful in the winter time because cats would get up there and sleep in that tube next to the radiator and if you didn't honk the horn and you started it up they only had one way out
This is how we lost our first cat in early spring of 1975 when I was 4... my dad tried to start their '74 Monte Carlo in the morning to head to work. My parents actually told us that the cat was going to live on a farm after him and my uncles were able to remove it.

Dalton, You inspired me to get busy and change the ball joints, tie Rod ends, brakes, oil and filter, and charge the AC on my 2007 GMC Yukon XL. Now its ready for vacation. anybody that says doing all that is easy is either a ASE mechanic with a well stocked shop, and a lift, or a crack addict. It is not easy but it can be done in 4-5 hours or less.
Those performance groves in those rotors provide more surface area to grip onto for stops. So it's a plus.
Local oil change place left the oil filter O-ring in my wife's '05 Pacifica a few years back. She wanted to go for groceries afterward and made it 11 miles before the engine seized up. They gave us Blue Book price for it.
The algorithm apperently isn't liking you, forgot about this gem of a channel, watched almost every episode and liked every one of them, but now I can binge on the videos I've missed and this one is just as good as the other ones, probably my favorite channel atm in terms of integrity and non scripted entertainment. It just gets better and never dissapoints.

In the early '80s, I was working as a lead line mechanic for a used car rental company. The bane of my existence was an AMC Hornet with a straight 6 that had a bad habit of dropping dead for, apparently, no good reason whatsoever. Then, after a few minutes rest, it might run fine for10 or 3 or 40 miles before repeating the process all over again. So... rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel pump, filters, blew out the fuel lines, coil, plugs and wires etc. Didn't help the problem a bit, but, boy howdy did the beast run fine when it did run. Finally, it occurred to me that there could only be one thing left that could, possibly, be happening that would fit the bill. I jacked it up and removed the rubber fuel line at the metal fitting on the tank and, sure enough, when it had been assembled, they had jammed the hose on and it grooved the hose so that a long, thin, flap of rubber would slip forward under full throttle, shutting off the flow until the engine starved and shut down. Then, it would relax back into it's normal shape until the next time. It was infuriating to know how much time and effort, money and knuckles it took to diagnose a sixty cent (at the time) piece of rubber hose being the cause of all that trouble. I took it out for a test ride and didn't come back for an hour. When I did, I threw tossed the keys in the "ready to go" box and went back to work on some other ones. I told the boss that if it broke down on anyone else like it had been, I would buy it and torch it. He never had another complaint on it while I worked there.
The newer the product the more complicated and fancier, but they are designed to be more expensive to make/fix. Old cars were solid, i had a Fiat 125 Sports and i ran into a concrete pylon, only had minor denting to the car but took a huge chunk out of the pylon and mechanically it wasn't great but it kept going despiute being decades old.
Good mechanics.. ya’ll are doing a good job finding all the old wore out parts.. this is a great car from the past , I drove a ‘73 Grand Prix just like this one for 22 years .. and it was basically trouble free I drove my Grand Prix very hard after drinking lots of beer and laying miles of rubber and out run the law a couple of times with my car .. I had a saying back then .. this car comes alive at 95 mph .. and after that it would do 120 plus .. My thoughts after restoring cars for 50 plus years is always start with a new fuel tank and all parts related to the fuel system.Also of note my G.P. had a points distributor and once a year I would put in a new set .. last year for points .. you have a very legendary car .. Good luck and have a good time just like I did ..

I was 17 or 18 and seen a car just like this for sale at a car lot, same year same color. I wanted that car so bad, I dreamed about cruising around in it on the strip. Sadly i just couldn't come up with enough down payment i needed at the bank to buy it before it got sold... i was so disappointed. Later on i ended up with a 72 Olds cutlass for less than half the price and it was a decent ride so i ended up redeemed. Still though, my first choice was the grand pre, and back then it was cool ride to have, turned many heads.

Man you guys make me miss my old 76 GP. I had deep dish ET slot mags with super wide 50s on the back. I couldn't afford air shock's so I twisted together 2 set's of coil springs just to get the ass end up high enough to not slice up my tires. She looked pretty mean old school hot rod look. God I loved that car.
5:42 without a doubt, if anyone is using solder ferrules, you should have a deflector! And loop and hook method prior to shrinking down. And always always make sure you’re solder is melted all the way around

I had an issue just like this on my 83 S-10. Turned out that i had tightened the worm gear clamp down a bit too tightly on the plastic fuel filter and it was restricting flow. Boy i felt dumb but at least it was an easy fix. I discovered this only after i took of the bed and inspected the fuel tank, fuel pump, and every bit of fuel line lol.
Those little solder shrink deals are great. I've been told by a legit flight line mechanic they're even used on fighter jet repairs. Good enough for how fast and dangerous my junk is!
Yeah buddy!! Solder heat shrink is awesome!! I use it on marine repairs too. Waterproof.

I had a similar problem with my CJ7, I blew compressed air back into the supply line from the fuel pump and I felt it blow the plugged sock off the end of the sending unit. I had a filter like you have ahead of the pump as well and that kept the pump clean, it fixed it, but I still ended up putting a new tank and sending unit in it as the old tank had some rust in it and the thing was really cheap. I recommend a filter ahead of the fuel pump, I think your old pump probably has a bunch of trash in it. These things can be...trying...
Im on the same boat you are. Im trying to start up my 68 Mustang for the first time since 2010 and kept telling myself the tank just needed a little flush, but when I cleared out my trunk and got a look at the tank it had bloated up and turned into a barrel and none of the mounting holes even lined up anymore. Speaking of mounting, it only had 1 bolt holding it down so who knows what happened there🤷♂️
