You are not alone Laura- many parents I know are so worried about the schooling system! I guess your conversation has been more educational than you'd have expected! Great as usual, keep up the excellent work.
i went to three different secondary schools in the UK and rule at all three was that phones were banned everywhere on school site. even if you had it out at lunch or break, a teacher could confiscate it. the only time you were allowed to get it out was when school was over for the day, so children could contact parents about getting home. i think your school is the exception rather than the norm for allowing kids to use phones at lunch. i think probably nowadays they're even stricter, as the potential for bullying and safeguarding issues is much higher. my sister works in a school and she says there's been lots of occasions of children photographing others and uploading the photos to social media as a form of bullying. i don't think it's something i would worry about schools not being hot on! as an aside, i love how youtube is recommending this to me despite being a native english speaker from the UK 😅

Listen to A British native talk is so satisfying. It's like *ASMR* to me. Specially I like to listen to Kate Winslet. Her way of talking is perfect. And yes, can't forget Jason. 👍 keep it up
I understood almost everything at the begining of this video but the real native side i understood maybe 20 % of the words you said. This is why my IELTS listening practise scores are very low.
I had same problem, really good chat. Although I can’t understand all of it, I will try to study every sentence with transcripts. Thank you very much ❤
Your pronunciation is so clear that I understand it better than my native language. I even had to watch the video at 2x speed to add extra difficulty, and also because I got hooked up on the tipping part. The challenge would be hearing people with strong accents, like Irish, Australian, New Castle or Southern States. I've seen that some times even native English speakers struggle to understand those, and if you try being a non-English native, you'll die from either a stroke or your head exploding.
A very useful video, really. I've striven following with no subtitles: it's been quite difficult but I was able to focus on the conversation. The main difference from a frontal lesson it's that in this case you have used a lot of connected speech and idioms and these are the turning points from a basic level language skills to a good fluency and a grasp of the language expendable in a real conversation with a native speaker. Thanks gaain for this video.

I love the qualities you chose as the most important for a person. Especially critical thinking and empathy. I feel that in some cases passion can be dangerous without those two 😤, but as a cherry on top - for sure. It occurred to me that a person is only - not sure how to put it - allowed to act as a real, mature human being when they understand the basics. I also thought of gratitude and appreciation. That was a really pleasant conversation to listen to and a good learning experience. Thank you both. ❤
Regarding phones in schools... interestingly almost everyone looks at it from restricting point of view. Why won't we involve mobile phones into the educational process? We see there is a strond demand from pupils/students... I think teachers must use this keen interest in a positive way. Having games/plays/any other sort of interactions / etc. as part of learning is better than just plain teacher's speech or lecture... I think this is just a matter of developing a new educational program and yes may be having money to invest in it. Sorry for the messy flow of thoughts... you both are stars! 🤩 Thank you for your lessons!!!

Thank you very much for the video :) I'd like to say something about tipping. In my opinion you should tip a restaurant. Generally, the waiter/waitress do not get paid well because of tipping culture. In most countries, it is discretionary but if you can afford it and the service was good, it’s customary to leave a tip.
let me talk about my experience as a black south African man born and schooled in countryside, I speak decent English I mean a basic English without problem, but for me to reach this state has got something to do with my surrounding. I listen to English news, read English books, watch English movies, everything is in English and when you continue doing this you find yourself internalized the language, you just speak it natural without even thinking. and speaking English is all about painting pictures with words. watching children movies can help a lot coz that's where everyone should start.
Hi. I am not a native English speaker, nor I have ever been in US, but I can tell you this. To the best of my knowledge there is a regulation in The States, according to which waiters and waitresses in the restaurants are compelled to pay taxes from their tips. So what if the customer doesn't pay a tip, specially an outsider who does't know how the things work there? In that case the government considers that it's the waiter's fault, because he did't make the customer understand clearly enough that a tip must be payed. This is what an American friend told me many years ago.
