- We have been enjoying our time in Serbia, we want to share this beautiful country and community in the Balkans with you. Serbia in our opinion has been overlooked by the Expat community, and we think Serbia deserves some serious consideration.

I like everything in Serbia. I have watched many videos on Serbia and Serbians, I have no hesitation to express that the Serbians are Very Very generous and well behaved people. I understand, they accept all foreigners by hearts and are very generous and friendly to them.

There are many myths in the Mediterranean since ancient times that tell of an unassuming, impoverished guest turning out to be a god. It affects mentalities to this day -- to be rude to a guest is thought to be very ungenerous, uncivilized, and unlucky. There are specific adjectives for "guest-loving" and "guest-welcoming." There is even a grain of superstition about it, obviously.

We are quite friendly, but can be quite brutal if screwed over.

We just love guests and when you love someone,you feel obligated(not as in you must way) to take care of him :)
I am married to a beautiful Serbian girl and we live here in the US. I've been to Loznica and Belgrade several times and have spent a few nights in Sabac. I have always been greeted with respect and excitement each and every time I've been there! We married in 2005 and planned to move back after I retire! This is still a few years down the road, but my beauty is in love with her US home now! LOL We'll see what happens!

If you want to see vibrant Serbia, come during spring and summer. Winter is usually the most depressing and grey time of year. Summer and spring are completely different vibe.

In general cities in Serbia don't have some "hood, ghetto" areas , basically any part of the city, center or suburbs are both at same level of safety, same goes even for big city like Belgrade. Even with crime (drugs for example), no criminals will attack you if you are not into that business. Also pickpocketing is not that common in Belgrade (almost nonexistent in other cities), while most of the big cities in Western Europe have real problem with that.

for once someone gave a clear synopsis of what to expect in Beograd re: safety..it is also refreshing to hear that one should worry more about a local mosquito as opposed to being mugged by thugs...this is almost always a foreigners concern when traveling..Rome is saturated with these kinds, that not even a place of worship is free of them....cheers! :D

@@AwesomestGreatestMostestFunny I mean we all know what goes on back home, and know where not to go with gold on or a wad of money...subconsciously we expect to be safe when we travel, it maybe stupid, but we do, and it's not wise. On a btfl middle of afternoon and a sunny day outside a very posh place with beach goers, a guy gets his gold chain yanked off his neck.
Cross body bag at a train station and my wallet was gone with all the cards, ugh anyone that has ever been a subject of theft knows what cancelling the card and how reporting the theft to cc is a pain in the butt. especially when you are traveling.
These are the basic rules and should be practiced everywhere across the globe... my question was more that of physical safety.
There was a serbian lady who warned a tourist not to walk solo to her apt at night after having a dispute with some obsessed brute in a cafe.

Serbia is still very safe country like you mention and compare with other countries but let me tell you when I was growing up there 40 years ago it was way MORE safer . That time even if you sleep in the park all night , nobody would touch you .

Wow, I feel that "Balkan Insight" link about the problems on Kosovo and Metohija is really Western-centered. They didn't mention anything about what was happening before the action of the Serbian military. Like how Serbian people have been attacked and driven away from the territory (their homes) for years. On its own territory which is insane... Anyway, I don't want to get into this any deeper, I just wanted to add this so it doesn't look like the Serbian military went there for no reason. Now I wasted my comment on the war topic... Ahhh, and I wanted to say something about life in Serbia. I guess one comment is enough... I have to remind everyone who is reading this comment that I don't have anything against other countries or nations, I'm just saying that a lot of things that happened in the last 50-100 years are wrongly presented in the history books and media. But I am optimistic that time will show what actually happened. Thanks. :)

I've spent about 7 or so years abroad and been in a lot of countries, Spain, Greece, Korea, Yemen, etc, etc... and I always found that when I treated the people and their culture with respect, it was always returned to me. I never felt unsafe. Now, if I were to go to Philly...

If you guys consider your retirement in Serbia I belive it could be very good move in many ways.
1. It is cheap and affordable
2. Safe
3. Easy going lifestyle, everyting is a walk away.
4. Good food, caffes, restaurants, patisseries, bakeries...
5. Very close to many other EU and non EU counties, just few hours driving to Budapest, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Sofia,Trieste, Adriatic or Aegean sea cost or just 1.5-2 hours flying (at low cost) to Athens, Rome, Milano, Wien, Paris, Munich, Zurich, Prague...
6. Many lakes and very affordable ski resorts in Serbia and Bosnia. Many thermal spas in Serbia. Rivers. Danube river cruise thru most of Europe
7. Very nice weather. Pretty mild winters with not many frigid cold days and not much of snow. Hot summers and very nice and warm springs and falls.
8. Almost everybody speaks English
9. And if you get Serbian passport one day together with US passport there is no borders and visas for you anywhere you want it to go in the world. With Serbian passport no visa for Russia, Cuba, China,Iran, Turkey...etc. EU, Japan... also :D , Literally the world is yours.

There are not any restricted area's anywhere in Serbia. And even the 'low score' of '38' is totally unfair - it should be close to zero. Germany's rating is '35' but I guarantee you Serbia is safer country than Germany. Cops are actually 'walking the beat' in Serbia instead of driving around chasing speeders. The whole country is extremely safe at any time - day or night. Also there are no homeless people in Serbia either.
Actually the low score might be exaggerated due to high levels of corruption and high tolerance for crime. It is true that crime is not concentrated to ghetto areas but that makes it more evenly spread and more likely to happen in central areas, night clubs, sport events and school yards.
With all that aside, it is still a fairly safe country, main reason being that it is a small country with only one large city. In small towns where "everyone knows everyone" people are less likely to engage in criminal or shameful activities. That also means less freedom in what you can do without being judged.
I've been living in Chicago since 2011 and you guys spent a lot of time in this video in my hometown of Subotica it was awesome to see. When I saw that crime index, with Serbia being at 38.07 and USA at 47.7 I chuckled. It suggests that the two are even in the same realm. Living in Chicago and visiting many different cities and towns in America, I can confirm that comparing the 2 countries when it comes to crime rates is ridiculous. Crime is skyrocketing in America especially since 2020 but even before that it was terrible. I mean parts of Chicago are literally like war-zones. You guys will be safer in Serbia than most places in America and more safe than any major city in Western Europe
Unfortunately much of what you say is true. There are many more safe areas than dangerous areas in the US, but the dangerous areas are pretty bad.

I know you guys have been away for a while now so you might not know everything that's going on but trust me, it's gotten about as bad as it can get. Especially in Chicago. My partner and I spent a few months in Albania and Kosovo early this year. I personally think the balkans in general is far safer than the US. Everyone was very friendly. Not to mention it was very inexpensive compare to Western Europe and the US. Serbia and Montenegro is up there on our list to visit next year for sure.

I do not know did you noticed on fort clock in Novi Sad (it is called "drunken clock") because on it bigger arrow rod shows arrows and smaller arrow rod shows minutes. Because at times when fort was built. It was believed that it is more important to know how much hours it is then minutes for ships in distance....

@Travel With Us by Warren & Julie I work on a cruise ship with most American guests and once they ask my colleague the same Serb from Novi Sad. if you wanted to live in America,and he answer. He asked him them can let your 10-year-old child go to school only 2 kilometers from home in America. They said that was not possible in America and understood why he would not want to live in the USA.
I would never imagine Serbia to be a dangerous country, at least in recent years. In 2017 the murder rate per 100,000 was 1.23, which is very low. You ask why Serbia has been overlooked. Could it be the same reason why Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, and Kosovo are also overlooked? I don't want to open up a can of worms because I know how some people can be very nationalistic but a lot of people do have a negative perception of Serbia, which is hard to get rid of.
There's been many western expatriates and travel bloggers in BiH and Montenegro for years. They are not that overlooked, while Macedonia is known for all its statues and generous hospitality. By the way, the name "Northern Macedonia" was forced on it by the U.S./west and most Macedonians do not approve and feel it is a total violation.
Also one reason Serbia is overlooked is it has never been "touristy" because it doesn't have a coastline and even during Yugoslavia, its tourist industry wasn't developed, while the Yugoslav government spent much developing and promoting Croatia, Dalmatia & Montenegro (Liz Taylor and Richard Burton went there, for example). Albania was closed under Enver Hoxha, a paranoid dictator.
@@jobrock1079 I am aware of what you pointed out but I wanted to avoid pricking the hornet's nest of Serbian nationalism. That is why I mentioned the other countries, some of which are not that amenable to Serbia.
@@rayvogensen2983 Serbs were the targets from the start. The overall pictures is key NATO countries, especially U.S., Britain and Germany wanted to break up Yugoslavia along old ethnic fault lines for a long time, but it waiting until Germany re-united that they got more active.
The west falsely advertised the Muslim & Croat leaders (with violent histories & goals) as "moderates" and ran PR for them. Bosnia and Croatia had the same major PR firms that were involved in the propaganda against Iraq in 1990-1991 to condition the American people to support that war - like with the false Iraqi soldiers bayoneting Kuwaiti incubator babies and so on.
Britain alone sent in over 2,000 mercenaries to Croatia and also sold & shipped millions worth of military communication equipment to Slovenia just weeks before the skirmish/war started there.
Serbs were fighting for their lives against western-backed separatist who had much, much larger armies & paramilitary forces than the mainstream media acknowledged. The Bosnian Muslim ARBiH had the largest forces in Bosnia by far - outnumbering the Bosnian Serb forces by 4 or more times. There was heavy arms smuggling despite the UN sanctions & U.S. & British ships didn't stop the shiploads of weapons to Croatian ports. Even a British weapons observer witnessed German Leopard tanks & airplane parts coming to Croatia's port (Ploce) in 1994, but was ordered by his superiors to send in a false report instead. There was huge cover-up & lies in the war, and the end result is that the post war censuses show Serbs were ethnically cleansed the most - it was the Serb population which fell percentage-wise, while the non-Serbs the media claimed were victims had a RISE in percentage of population in Croatia, BiH & Kosovo respectively by end of war.
I've learned from those who were on the ground DURING the wars, including UN soldiers, reading official UN documents & transcripts of the ICTY trials, & also caught many, many lies by the mainstream news/narrative.
ive been to serbia 5 times i guess... few times i went to belgrade and novi sad but most of the times i was in Šabac... no tourists there, only locals. been to a festival in Šabac too... always had a great time! ive made some good friends there, and we still keep in touch on whatsapp group... cant wait to go back. love it there... i have to admit there was one guy that tried to pick a fight, but that was more of a racist thing i guess, im blond, blue eyes and i come from a rich country; Belgium (his words, not mine) and i was talking to some girls, wich in serbia are ALOT beautiful girls OMFG! having some drinks with my friends and he was offended by that, but my serbian friends intervene, great friendly people even in a little town as Šabac and lovely food!! i ate so much there! thank you for your hospitality!

It sure does. Novi Sad looks very clean and well maintained, and not filled with homeless encampments, with vagrants high on drugs, or drunk and yelling obscenities in the park; like in Los Angeles, California, USA. As an American. I would love to visit ALL of Ex-Yugoslavia.
Please visit city Užice, in western-central Serbia. It's almost unbelievable city in rocky mountains with high skyscrapers ( little serbian New York) and great nature visible from city.Just google Uzice.

The only thing that tarnishes the look of Subotica center is the national theater. I dont know why someone decided that neoclassicism and modern glassworks jell together.

If you pause your video at 11:56 on the other side of the fence you will see a black marble cube monument that marks the actual location where they gathered and threw people under the ice. It was too eerie to put the statues with the list and everything on this location because this is a city and the largest beach on the Danube river in Europe. That marble cube was placed just recently.

Serbia and the Serbs did not have anything to do with the "decimation" of Jews in WW2. Serbia was occupied back then and Nazis did it. The region north of Belgrade belonged to so called Independent State of Croatia and a major concentration camp was Staro Sajmiste in it.
We clearly make the point that Serbia was not involved.

we accept all foreigners very well because tourism in Serbia is not so well developed, people here are mostly pleasantly surprised when they come across a foreigner especially citizens who dont live in the capital Belgrade
The only thing that can attack you in Serbia is a goddamn heat during the summer and that's about it. Though If I'm perfectly honest, some summers can be balanced which is refreshing.

I understand, unfortunately, the original music that was in there had a person that was allowing free use of their music put a copyright claim on the video. So on most of the videos with that music, I had to insert music from UA-cam’s library. When they inserted that music it was at an extra high level, unfortunately I cannot adjust it.

Yugoslavia had been given an option, by Hitler and the Nazis, to pretty much sit out the war and provide some logistical support to Wehrmacht. Although the government and the prince regent accepted the deal, people rioted and army staged a cue and overthrew that government and expelled the prince regent. Hitler was furious, and the Nazi war machine overrun Yugoslavia in just 11 days. However, the Yugoslavs never accepted the defeat and immediately the Nazis and their allies found themselves in their own Vietnam.
My father was in that demonstration and lived through the bombing of Belgrade.

I grow up in Novi Sad , for 26 years i never have problems with crime of any sort. You can walk in the middle of the night nothing will happen. Serbia is very safe country.

There are thousands of students from Africa in general in Serbia and english is preferred language since we know that Serbian is very difficult to learn. As far as color of the skin, this is not an issue here
Serbia doesn't have enough jobs for their own people, let alone foreigners. Why doesn't your son try a country with a better economy than Serbia?
@@jobrock1079 foreigners actually find jobs faster than domestic people do. There was even a case of Norwegian who faked his diplomas to become a ceo of some lake in Belgrade, he basically got the job only because he was a foreginer and they never double checked him.
These people are true serbian friends. They have only bad leaders who like to dig in someone else’s yard.
