MXL 990 Mic Vs Audio Technica AT2020 Large Diaphragm Condensor Mic

- This week we pit two more Large Diaphragm Condensor Mic's against each other, In this Corner the MXL 990 and in the opposite corner the Audio-Technica AT2020. I plugged each into the iRig Pre, then into a Rode SC3 adapter and straight into the Sony A7. I shot with the Sigma 60mm Art lens wide open at F2.8 and 1/50 shutter speed. I Believe it was at ASA 800 . Take a look and a listen and see which you prefer. Both these XLR mics seem to sell for the same $99 usually tho the MXL is often discounted and sometimes sold in a set with the MXL 991. I don't think you can go far astray for Voice Over work with either of these microphones but perhaps you will hear something to sway you one way or the other when deciding on a Voice Over mic.

I prefer the Mxl 990 because it sounds way more warmer, and for commentaries it sounds like people would get a good vibe from it
I think that the AT2020 sounds more versatile, meaning that it is better for instruments. That is what i believe
+Cravie. I agree, love the warmth of the MXL mic tho it has a slightly higher noise floor
mxl sounds beefy, and at2020 sounds creamy.
Mxl is warmer than at2020, but at2020 is flat and crystal clear!!

I own both mics and I find the AT2020 better than the MXL 990. I noticed that the MXL 990 had a slight hiss to it when I was recording whereas the AT2020 has minimal hiss. Great video!
I'll go for the AT2020
Identical prices. MXL looks bigger, more luxurious and has a little more bass. The ATT2020 is the more recognizable pedigree (resale value is better) and may be a bit more natural. (My voice can sometimes use the bass). I guess the ATT2020 wins it for me.
that noise coming from the MXL is definitely a deal breaker i shouldnt have to process the signal just to correct an issue with the mic itself

For me a huge diference, you can hear a hiss on MXL 900 when the Audio technical mic dosent have much hiss, but MXL 900 seems to have a larger diaphragm than the Audio Technica-T2020.
+Itachi Uchiha glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching
Mxl 990 is a pick for me.

You can compare thé mxl 990 to AT2050 ! Would be more correct !!! Mxl by far !!!
Yes indeed but didn’t have one on hand at the time.
they sound almost the same except the at 2020 sounds a little more natural to me.

you look like someone's uncle
Are you using a standard 990, or is that the "XL" version? They are basically the same electronics with different size diaphragms, but this particular 990 sounds boomy to me.
AT2020 hands down.

As someone who has a really really quiet and soft voice😂I feel like the mxl would work for me. I used the at2020, and sometimes my voice comes really quiet. Its all me, not the mic. But the mxl might work best due to sensitivity and the bass feel it has
Only YOU can decide what’s best for you. I love ALL my Microphones for different reasons
True that sir!
Hmmm.... AT2020 would be great for voice, it gives you that “real life” sound. And the MXL would be good for acoustic stuff giving it that fatter and/or beefy sound.
But overall both sound good, just depends on what your using it with.

AT2020 WINS
+Carlo “Caloy” Velasco seems to be the consensus
Mad Mohawk Films -bud...i bought the at 2020 but it sounds low when powered up....what could be the problem...?
IMO AT2020
