Metallica - One lyrics

- Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. The current line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band include former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth) and former bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.
Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed the band as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax.[1] The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim, with its third album Master of Puppets (1986) described as one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album (also known as The Black Album), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience.

This song took inspiration from the book and film "Johnny Got His Gun". An anti-war film about the *true* effects of war. The army and doctors keep him alive. He has no limbs, 1 sense left (touch) and no facial features anymore. But he still has mental capacity. Yet he's kept alive against his will despite using morse code to communicate that he doesn't want to live anymore. It's a film everyone should watch at least once in their life. It's a great film, very meaningful. Give it a watch if you haven't already.
About a week ago I read this book and I would definitely recommend it. I agree with you, every person needs to read this book / watch a movie based on it at least once in their life.
Such a relatable song in those times, and people were saying metal genre is evil but they're speaking the truth. Fuck war.
And the people behind it
And the old and weak men that start it.
Niko Bellic : War is when the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other.
I hope its not relatable considering this song is about a soldier whom lost all his limbs, sight and hearing
Depends on what the war is fought for.
Some wars are unnecessary, some wars are necessary.
An example of an unnecessary war would be the Boer War, influence wasn’t necessary for the British Empire in Africa (plenty other colonies).
An example of a necessary war would be to stop the oppression of Nazi Germany back in the 1940’s.
War is terrible I agree, but it comes down to this. We hate it, but we need it.
These guys absolutely owned the 80's. One of the best bands of all time. Rock on
And the 90s with The Black Album.
The best band of all time

My dad introduced me to Metallica too
This song really hits hard for me. I was 2 years too young to go to Vietnam so I was very fortunate but I had many friends that went and they came back totally broken and lost.
I'm a musician and I go to the VA Hospital here in Seattle and I take my guitar with me.
I play music for the men and women that are in bed or walking or whatever and it's really a great bridge to some very meaningful conversations.
Sometimes I play my guitar and I sing and sometimes they'll sing with me and I can see the weight lifting off of them.
I feel blessed to be able to do this and to have these wounded and largely forgotten Warriors open up and tell me their stories and tell me of their pain and sometimes of their happiness but not often.
I would encourage anybody that's a musician or an artist or just anybody that cares to find your VA hospital in your area or any kind of va Institution and go there and volunteer in some manner.
I guarantee you those servicemen and women will be overjoyed that somebody cares enough to come and just sit and talk with them for an hour.
I can’t find the right words to perfectly complement this. You were very lucky.
You are one of the people that keep this world together, when all seems lost, and everyone is doing everything they can for themselves and no one else, you are one of the few people in this vast plain of existence who keeps everything together.
You're amazing and lucky
Right on brother
That's about as honorable as it gets . Thank you . I really wish our vets had everything they need when they come back . Our system has failed them . The military needs to be fixed they should have it all when they come home from war until they die . No excuses . I hate to say it but military just uses people it seems . They do their job and that's it . I don't stand for that shit .
People bitch about Metallica because they are over rated. Thats because this band is DAMN good at making music!! People are ignorant.
Obscure Creation maybe they were referring to Metallica's later years when they sold out...

There's no such thing as "selling out." It's always been about the money. You know how bands always say, "It's all about the fans?" Well, who pays the money for albums, merch, and concerts?

You just found Metallica?!?! That is so awesome. Welcome to the club!!!
Welcome to your 30s.
Now you a bonafide adult man, welcome to the club. 😂
Hah this is like me as a 13 years old:) This song really got me into playing metal. Welcome to the family!
Lol im 21 and just got into this band. Never too late
My dad originally got me hooked on Metallica when I was 6 yrs old.. he stopped listening to them unfortunately. But I’m 30 now and still always jam to them whenever I got music playing. I’ll be rocking to them til I die. Idc how old I get. Good thing is I got my 6 & 8 year old boys hooked now, maybe they will pass it on to their children. Much love to the best metal band ever born!
I remember my uncle had a stroke that almost killed him a few years back. Fortunately he managed to survive and is pretty much completely better now and I'm thankful for that. He's always been a Metallica fan, but he told me once that when he was in the hospital he felt like he was in the music video of One. Most of the lyrics actually related to his experience as well. Vicariously it's such a scary thing to go through but I'm just thankful my uncle is still alive and seems to be doing better now.
“Hold my breathe as I wish for death, oh please god, help me”
Even though this is a song about war I’m pretty sure most people most people with depression and suicidal thoughts can appreciate this line.

My favorite part is the solo climax at 6:20 into the brutal outro with the harmony part. Turn up the volume to absolute maximum. The sudden silence after the last notes is introspective. If I play this song in the car I just turn off the sound after it finishes & enjoy the contrasting silence. One of the best songs ever made regardless of genres
One of my favorite things to do with Tool. They submerge you into their sound to the point you get existential with your thought, then after the most disgusting notes conceived by man it just leaves you in silence. Like what are you even supposed to after that point. Dude…Music’s kinda cool
One of the greatest pieces of music greatest talent in the universe

My dad will just sit down smoke a cigarette and stare out the window to this song and disconnect from the world I love Metallica and this just shows how war is truly hell

My Navy bud introduced me to Metallica in 1990. I've progressively became a freak about them. I'm a guitar player so I gravitated to Kirk but James is just as good. Their music is pure genius and lyrics are pretty damn good too. I just love their long instrumentals and fast playing and chord changes in the middle. Just brilliant!

I remember when I went to the soldier recovery unit in JBLM, I was in a spot where mentally I was so lost and confused about everything. It was probably one of the darkest moments in my life as in depression and paranoia. When I went to my unit, I was very lucky they allowed me to not be in formation because of how I isolated myself to not talk to anybody. I told myself not to make any friends because of how insanely paranoid I was due to sexual violence. Even though I told myself that, it was inevitable that I met people and talked to them. I met a long time specialist who fought in Afghanistan (If I recall) and had to fight child soldiers. He was super fucked up, like he mentally was not here every time you saw or talked to him. He was there for years I think, but he was getting out the same time around me. I was only there for 6 months but it was crazy that I met him. When I think of this song, I think of everybody I also met in JBLM who was also lost. The soldier recovery unit was truly a blessing for me, because I realized everybody there was just as lost as me. I felt like I belonged and I told myself that I would make it out like them. I miss them and I hope they're doing okay. Every time this song plays in my playlist, I remember them.
Never gets old classic song.

I cannot wait for my son to shred like this. He just started playing lead guitar & so far he’s been enjoying his lessons with School of Rock
Just went back to this song this evening. Oh my, its one of those great ones, is it not? But for me it all started with a ball of red yarn, unravelling it. There is this freeway running through, "And a river runs through it" and wwhat not, in litterature called "canon", in Japanese (as this where I live these days, "michi"). A road. Everything is a reply on something someone else said or wrote or sang. Heard that this one might have been, at least lyrically, inspired by Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun". Got that book way back from my aunt, who is a poet (one of those rare published ones), and it had a profound impact on me in my youth (oh my, that was some time ago!). And began unravelling it back to here. Does it stop here, tonight? Well, we'll see.
The Ghost Of You by My Chemical Romance reminds me of this song, kind of. Especially the music video for both songs.
I'm so happy my dad introduced me to Metallica as a baby. Definitely my favorite song by them. I could listen to them all day long.
My mom and dad loved this song and they asked me to put this song in their funeral so i did, hope they were still in this world😢
This song was made based off of how a military man was injured from stepping on a land mine. The man lost everything all of his limbs, he was blind and deaf, he wasn't able to speak. this song was wrote to only imagine what he felt like.
not to sound like a dick, but it's based off a movie Metallica's watched called "Johnny Got His Gun". It became one of the band's favorite movies and they wanted to make a song for it.
+Ryan Valenti maybe that happened in the movie but Jonathan is right. They have even said that it was about a WWI Canadian soldier who stepped on a land mine and became trapped in his body
+zach gallegos No, they (Lars Ulrich I mean) said that they made it based upon the movie, hell, they bought the rights to the movie to put clips of it in the music video for this song.
I think Metallica is probably one of the greatest bands ever.🐇

God, how much i love these lyrics of Metallica. Even the guitar melody explains a lot of the feelings one can relate to. Metallica is a huge inspiration for me when I write and produce my music. Im making edm and my melodies is touching souls and my lyrics explain the hardtimes i felt in life and the good times. I want to make serious edm that sounds like nothing else in this world. Synths replacing guitars, and a synthwave beat to it. Thats my goal.
That's an awful idea your old your fat get out now don't waste no more time you're not going to make it if you can't play an instrument EDM is junk nobody likes
Greatest band of all time.
I totally never fully understood this song until now. It’s a dying soldier asking for god to help him as he comes in and out of consciousness. Every time he says “oh please god help me” angelic guitar riffs occur but then he is brought back to the horrors of war and the climax of the horror is the end breakdown! Chillsssssssss
I apologize for inconveniencing. But the song is based on the book Johnny Got His Gun. Where a soldier got blown up by a landmine and miraculously survives and is left in a hospital
