When my brother died in 1989 I was in such a dark place. This song seemed to written and described my brother exactly. The guilt and shame and the unforgivable feeling of depression. My brother committed suicide. Listening to this song really explained to me what he must of felt when he died. I have since then after I got married in 2009 (took me a long time to get over his death). I vowed that whatever my kids wanted to be, whatever they tried to do in their lives I would be there for them. My son (13) and daughter (11) will always be supported and loved by me their father. This song is a beautiful expression of things that might have been.
My brother also died 6 years ago...we both like metallica ever since 1988....I still prayer for him......as Orthodox Christian we never loose our hope for our brothr..
This song is dedicated to all those who's purpose is to stop you from being who you truly are. Never love anyone enough to let them stop you from being who you are supposed to be. Live your dreams and purpose to the fullest extent even if you have to live it alone. You'll be happier.
So true bro. My wife is leaving me after just a year of marriage because she can't stand who I really am anymore. I still love her but she was holding me back
Its amazing how an incredible song creates emotions and feelings between people. We are from different counties, speak different languages and here we are paying our respect to this Metallica classic through our life experiences. Rock on forever my brothers and sisters !!! Shaun from South Africa
3 years ago I was extremely depressed and I was in a very dark place and after many suicide attempts I started listening to Metallica and they helped me get through it. Thanks for existing
My brother died 6/20/2020 he loved Metallica he even passed in his Metallica shirt we did his funeral in Metallica so dam beautiful we played this song loud and proud
“that old man here is me” is when this song goes from a 9 to a 10, and then the solo takes it to legendary status. truly a masterpiece made simply and beautifully
I have grieved with this song and cried many rivers as a teenager listening to this. "Never free - never me!" Unforgiven to them and unforgiven to me. Label me. I label you. That's real and honest life! Still at 46 - this is my go to grief song when I lose a loved one. The lyrics always ring true of their life and my own. So deep and so real of how many lives these lyrics affect so many and also helps us to grieve those who pass before us. My mom was very religious and hated Metallica and my music choices growing up. And ironically- it was the music and lyrics that saved me - way back when. Very horrific youth years and suicide was never more than a thought away - back then. And even after finding Jesus and the truth by reading the bible for myself; songs like this are very much needed to hug self and comfort self for the flesh sake. And I do! Thank you for The Unforgiven!!! Best hugs ever Metallica and saved many lives and also their souls to become better people too. Still my favorite song that should be played at all funerals. Just because those who give this song a chance then they absolutely get it and those who haven't yet --- will get it when death looks back at them from the ones they loved!
If you pay attention to the lyrics, it starts off with “New blood joins this earth” (infant) then “child” then “young man” then “man” then “old man” it’s like the boy is growing. Deep song
I do, especially the line at 2:17 - *He tries to please them all, this bitter man he is.* I do a lot for others very well, but they don’t seem to appreciate it much; if at all. So I strongly identify as who James "Thee Unforgiven;" this will forever be my favorite Metallica song.
This is dedicated to my friend who just past he was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars he passed away at 90, no longer tortured by his memories of the wars finally free may he rest in peace.
this song is for all the people who have been held down in life for whatever reason,i love the fact it empowers you to label people the way they label you,so powerful and human
Great song! In my opinion, this song to me is about when you realize you’ve been trying to please everyone else wether it be society or family/friends. Then one day you realize you lost sight of who you are and what you want. Does anyone truly know you? Don’t wait till it’s too late ..instead of “never me, never free” let it be, “I am me, I am free!”.
Speaks to me more along the lines of societal expectations. You got to learn the rules, never allowed to just be, always needing to fit in. The line" so I dub thee unforgiven" is what sells that idea for me. No matter what happens you still owe someone, almost like a debt is never repaid. Never me, never free. Food for thought at the very least.
@@santaanaluna4563 This fits my childhood/teens. Subsequently years of drug and alcohol abuse to kill the pain and fill the void. Had to get sober and work on a lot of shit. Still working on me. It takes time but I'm not going to be the bitter old man. They are not worth it...
I enjoyed this song so much as a teenager, that I never understood or bothered what they were saying. Now, at 50, I played it on UA-cam with lyrics. It hit me so hard. It got me watery eyes. This song was made for me. It’s now one of my favorite karaoke songs. Long live Metallica!
I'm 27 so I'm half way there brother. But it brings tears to my eyes too, and I wasn't even born at height of this band. Yet it resonates deep in my heart. Truly a special song unlike any other ❤
people should put this song as their alarm in order to remind theirself who they are trying to not become by fighting everyday and remind them that the pain of regret is worse than the pain of working and taking tough decisions . Hope is the most important thing nowadays lads dont let them take it it from you . And if they take it ,then fight back and gain it again . Each in their own way and time ,but the fighting will be needed . edit: excuse my English im greek
When this song came out I didn't speak English, so I didn't understand what they were saying, but I listened to it 5 years ago after decades, and I cried.
Recently i had my fist son, i used to say that this is my favourite song but just now hearing it over over again i realize that the lyrics took a whole different meaning. I will always be there for you as your father as your guidance in this world to help you to teach you to stand in every moment of your life. The quest for finding one's true self is a never ending process, forever we are free. Σ αγαπώ μικρέ μου
This song from Metallica is just somehow so touching. Especially when the chorus starts. Almost April 2019. Still one of the greatest songs ever made. That old man here is me
this song was released in 91 when i was a kid and after 30 years i still listen to this song faithfully.. i really love this song...salam from Jakarta Indonesia
The line at 2:17 - *"He tries to please them all, this bitter man he is!"* - really resonates with me. I do so much for so many people & do it quite well, and they don’t appreciate it much. Whenever it gets to me, I always think to myself "Without me, everyone who depends on me is in serious trouble." Still, I strongly identify as the one James dubs "The Unforgiven." This will forever be my favorite Metallica song.
Yes, this was my take away from this, but I didn't grasp all the lyrics as a teen when I needed it. But, times were different then, people weren't bitter about doing things, because good things came back. Now there are more users and takers so doing 'so much for others' is folly. One and done, I'll still do or go first, but someone who doesn't reciprocate gets called out out or off the favor list.
Man this song was such a part of my childhood growing up. Metallica period was a huge part of my childhood/teenage years. Thanks for the great music. This song really gives me chills every time I hear it.
one of most complete songs I've ever heard. Sound, feeling, words, and most of all meaning. I was 16 when I first heard it and it still carries that same strong demeanor.
this helped me through school as a child. I lost ALL my friends that i had since kindergarten. The line " wont see what might have been " speaks to me so hard til this very day. I will never see how it would have been like to grow old with friends since a very young age.
yeah, losing friends and growing up lonely is a recipe for a horrible life. but only if you let it be. the MetallicA family is here for you @gymandthelifeoutside3966
You're not alone who felt that. I always considered my self as worthy of having a beautiful life packed with friends, girlfriends , joy and happiness but even if I didn't have all these things and I wont see what might have been if I had been myself and had full confidence in my childhood and teenage years.. I know that in the end we will all be alone and die alone, so its better to love oneself and myself first
The line at 2:17 - *He tries to please them all, this bitter man he is* - really resonates with me. I do a lot for others very well, but they don’t seem to appreciate it much; if at all. I strongly identify with who James "Thee Unforgiven" and this will forever be my favorite Metallica song.
jay parsons amen brother. I’m in the Air Force and I’m going to get deployed soon after I get my assignment although I won’t be doing fighting I will be supporting my brother branches in their fighting. 🤙🏼
I first heard this song when i was 2 years old and since then it has been my favourite. Here we are 17 years later that i can trully understand the meaning of the lyrics and can fully relate to some parts of the song. Scary and incredible at the same time that my favourite song would mean so much for me in the future.Greatness of music and greatness of Metallica

I'm just kind of getting into Metallica. As always when listening to new music, it's taking me a while to get used to their style, but this song was instantly my favourite
I never really liked Metallica my sister always plays they’re songs when we clean up then I heard this and became my favourite now just trying to like the other songs
Such a sad and beautiful song, it always plays with your emotions, whatever how many times you listen to it.. even to this day, it has the same effect on me, I shed a few tears each time.
My dad passed away last yr and we would always listen to this song and even played it on guitar hero. I've never fully listened to the lyrics until now.....I understand my dad a bit better now and we were far more alike than I ever realized. I miss u so much🖤🤘🔥🎤🎸
This song talks to me. I'm 75 years old. This songs puts into words what I've felt all my life but could not put into words myself! The feeling of utter loneliness when for some reason you don't understand, your the odd man out. When your always the new kid. When your an adult your the F.N.G. When you make it home from an undeclared war and your the bad guy. When Democrats think your too conservative and Republicans say your too liberal. When you live in the north everyone calls you hillbilly and when you move back south people are offended when you fly the Stars and Bars. This song is the mantra for ones that just don't fit in anywhere.
@@jasongraham4425 First... Wow. Its sad to know they have enslaved you to such a degree. Or maybe you are really young if you are A "good" man is usually someones punk. A woman, a religion an institution whatever. Fuck being a "good" man. Most of youse guys don't even know how to be a man.
@@jasongraham4425 The song is clearly a horrific tell of a young child who becomes a do boy and never reaches his potential. I'm really confused why you think someone who had his identity, thoughts, characteristics and eventually his life snuffed out is good. Smh
I have listened to this song a thousand times probably, still I sit here with tears in my eyes.... Thanks metallica for leaving this masterpiece to the world!
Metallica you rock . 3 guys from high school and I our senior year went to Sumerset Wisconsin to see Metallica on the 94 black Album. We got a ride from a district attorney cause our car broke down in front of his house. We were going to walk 12 miles too the concert but he was nice and gave us a ride. The concert Metallica came down in a helicopter for the song 1 awesome . The drums were so loud people said y could here for 5 miles. Girls were mud wrestling and getting wild. We partied from 10pm till the next day with some cool Canadians. Just a great show.
Recently I watched a few vids with metallica talking... only because I like to hear James Hetfield talk. The dude is so deep and wise that he blows my mind. Anyway, he said at an interview that the song that reflects him the most is "The unforgiven" ... And now by reading the lyrics and knowing some of his story it all makes sense. Amazing how poetic while being spot on and not spewing a shit load of nuances that dude can be. JUST AMAZING!
Is he, now? Let's say that you're a rock in a lake. Time/Life is the acid in that lake. Once 50 years have passed you'll be a smooth stone. That smoothness, my friend. Is wisdom
Sandman556 Or you just corrode to find open air pockets, become an awkward mangled version of your former self, and slowly break apart and wither away. That dust, my friend, is defeat. [And I'm joking, by the way]
One day I was having a shit day, and I was feeling like I couldn’t related to anyone or anything on this planet and I just felt kinda hopeless. This song comes on, on my way to work and i start ballin like a kid, It was like this song got me, and I felt a little less alone. Great fucking song
There comes a time in someone's life when a song resonates with them massively. Right now is certainly that time for me with this song. I'm about a month or so away from being sent to prison for finding myself involved in some stuff I had always vowed to stay away from which has also led to my closest friend also facing prison for the same thing while attempting to help me get out of it. Since the arrest last year I have always felt incredibly guilty and self-defeated and self destructive and I know I will be stuck with the shame and guilt for quite some time, but yeah I do see myself as Unforgiven no matter what everyone else says
Remember your past does not define you. All saints have a past and all sinners have a future. Keep your head held high. Once you’ve done your time you’ve paid your dues. Let this life lesson teach you that tomorrow is another day. Wishing you the best.
always remember, you're never truly unforgiven... if you can forgive yourself. because the bitter people who hold grugdes eventually get weighed down, trust me im one of them.. and you'll get wieghed down too, if you can't forgive yourself. please, always find it in your heart to forgive and look after yourself.. and if your finding it hard, think of this song.
To think they were just in their 19’s to early twenties when they wrote this song! Truly show us how matured their generation is and how genius they are!
wery small number of people can really understad this amaizing, in front of the time song.only who lived like that and still fight every day and survive.sorry for language.luka serbia
I call bullshit. Regret is the best emotion you can feel. If you are able to regret what you did, your personality is evolving and you're becoming abetter person. Perhaps it is unpleasant, but it's certainly not toxic.
I’ve listened to this song for a long time, and it’s been my favorite song for a while. I would always listen to this song in my moments of pain and it always got to me but I never knew why. For some reason though I never stopped and actually listened to the lyrics. I almost cried, because this song is what I feel like inside. I feel like I’m trapped inside my own head because of other people bringing me down. This song is beautiful, and Metallica will always be my favorite band.
"13 year ago" OMG seriously? 😱whatever, thank you admin for still keeping the song unforgiven..This is on UA-cam..this song is a rock song of all time . Love you 😘
Foster C my thoughts exactly. ITS an unbelievable song. Suits even my life :). But I’m not old yet, Even though I SEE myself like this in the not so distant future!!! :P
An impossibly profound set of lyrics...truly powerful and painful. Love this song...always have since I was young and first heard it. There is an incredible power in man's creativity and lyrics like this are testament to that fact. Thanks for posting this.
This amazing song is in a piano version in the series Lucifer. As soon as I heard it I recognized it and brought me back to my teenage years. And here I am obsessed over the song again! The words hit a little too close to home.
I'm glad my coach introduced me to this band. I thought it was stupid at first because it was 'old' and that it didn't match my friends music taste, (realized it didn't matter later on). I come across the band again, and I now know the only reason why I didn't like the band before. It was because I didn't look 'hard enough' to find the meaning in their songs. Thanks, coach.
Mettalica gaves us, what we lost after disconected from the clasical music. They gave us a combo of feelings not many modern bands are capable of generating: Pride, Triumph, Rage, Revange, Irony, Tragedy and other.
this is the music i grew up on, im 15 and i still remember going into the basement 8 years ago to see my dad working, and listening to Metallica blaring from the stereo

My brother passed away November 16 2020 he love these Songs. I always Listen to these Songs to give me peace plus all the great memories of us singing them together..
I must have listened to this song a million times since I was 12 back in the early 90s when Metallica became my first musical romance... Im 35 still dont know who my father is and I'm surrounded by devious family bent on my failure... now I just listened and heard the message for the first time I understood the meaning of this song and I love it !!!!
Hes still out there...we never die. Youll see him again.
From those of us who are still trapped in the darkness. You have my thanks for this post. No one should bear the scars we do, nor the burdens we bear.

This song is dedicated to all those who's purpose is to stop you from being who you truly are. Never love anyone enough to let them stop you from being who you are supposed to be. Live your dreams and purpose to the fullest extent even if you have to live it alone. You'll be happier.

I have grieved with this song and cried many rivers as a teenager listening to this.
"Never free - never me!"
Unforgiven to them and unforgiven to me. Label me. I label you. That's real and honest life!
Still at 46 - this is my go to grief song when I lose a loved one.
The lyrics always ring true of their life and my own. So deep and so real of how many lives these lyrics affect so many and
also helps us to grieve those who pass before us.
My mom was very religious and hated Metallica and my music choices growing up.
And ironically- it was the music and lyrics that saved me - way back when.
Very horrific youth years and suicide was never more than a thought away - back then.
And even after finding Jesus and the truth by reading the bible for myself;
songs like this are very much needed to hug self and comfort self for the flesh sake. And I do!
Thank you for The Unforgiven!!! Best hugs ever Metallica and saved many lives and also their souls to become better people too.
Still my favorite song that should be played at all funerals.
Just because those who give this song a chance then they absolutely get it and those who haven't yet ---
will get it when death looks back at them from the ones they loved!
If you pay attention to the lyrics, it starts off with “New blood joins this earth” (infant) then “child” then “young man” then “man” then “old man” it’s like the boy is growing. Deep song
Thanks
Its about depression
Amen

Metallica The Unforgiven So Sovely
Theresa T to me it’s about an abused boy 🙁
And I dub thee all forgiven
Speaks to me more along the lines of societal expectations. You got to learn the rules, never allowed to just be, always needing to fit in. The line" so I dub thee unforgiven" is what sells that idea for me. No matter what happens you still owe someone, almost like a debt is never repaid. Never me, never free. Food for thought at the very least.

The line at 2:17 - *"He tries to please them all, this bitter man he is!"* - really resonates with me. I do so much for so many people & do it quite well, and they don’t appreciate it much.

I'm Switch LMAOOO
I'm Switch finally a neighbor joke I haven’t seen on every song. Thank you for making I think an original comment
@@Conquest935 Hope that's sarcasm.
My brother passed away November 16 2020 he love these Songs. I always Listen to these Songs to give me peace plus all the great memories of us singing them together..
there are about 250,000 words in the English language and I can't string any of them together to say how much I love this song
Zogohoganoth ! No there's not
moikkis65 happy?
There's way more than that LOL
🖤Such a great song gets me through tougher times 🖤
So true...
Beautiful and thoughtful! The lyrics are amazing!
Thanks Metallica!
One thing I love about metallicas music,it's meaning is what you feel like it is .one song can have multiple meanings
Through "constant pain". As a French person I was always hearing "constipated" when I was listening to this song. I still do.
im american and thats what I always heard too lol
Lol im french and never heard that,OOF😬😂
Ce morceau est le maître des hallucinations auditives "New Blood joins this earth"
Je comprends "nous battons des œufs"
Fuckin goosebumps everywhere after 10 years.
After listening this song after many, 2+ years,
I understand the reality behind these lyrics much more and it hits me much more than before.
