All I can think of is due to the Great War history has been lost and Sallows found bits and pieces and put those pieces together to form his crude attempt at history.
Caesar himself compares the Legion to Rome shortly before the end of the republic. He intends to unify NCR and the Legion as a vast military dictatorship, with Vegas as his own Rome, wiping out the weaknesses of each and combining their strengths. On the other hand however, we should remember that the Legion was only the product of a desperate situation to begin with and that Caesar knows he's going to die and doesn't really seem to be interested in finding a successor, so possibly he doesn't care about the Legion's long-term sustainability and stability past his death.
There maybe a successor to Caesar chosen. But the Legion will collapse after Caesar's death, there's is no one strong or capable enough to hold the Legion together. All the NCR needs to do is wait for Caesar to die one way or another.

His heart's in the right place, trying to get people to stop coming in to die, even though that's what you sign up for when joining any para-military or military group, but his strategy to fix it is doomed to never work.
Forlorn hope is a post-medieval expression. The forlorn hope were the first men sent in through a breach in the castle walls to end a siege. Almost certain to die, but no shortage of volunteers since massive privilege awaited the survivors of such an operation.

After years of replaying this game on and off, I never once had believed his intelligence reports at all until one of his stories actually happened. I was attacked by a lone legion assassin being helped by a super mutant the second I walked out of the ranger safehouse.
I was also attacked by a bunch of deathclaws in Quarry Junction and there just happened to be a bunch of great khans nearby whom the deathclaws never seem to bother in any playthrough.
24:02 When I got to Ranger Station Charlie (I had already gone there before, after I left Nipton), it was completely wiped out, and Legion Assassins were everywhere...
I like the NCR. They're basically the best hope for any semblance of the old world to be restored and civilization to return back to normal. Democracy is, in general, a very good thing. I mean, I won't deny there is corruption, but there are also many honorable people to keep the balance. Also, I do live in California, maybe I might be biased…
Personally, in such a situation, I would prefer something different. The major factions in Fallout universe are all obsessed with bringing things back to the way they were before the war in some capacity. The world has literally changed, however, and it's unlikely returning things to the way they were would actually have any benefit. A post-apocalypse is a perfect setting for new ideas to form, and sure, they can borrow some aspects of the Old World's ideas and incorporate them into these experimental forms of governance. But by trying so hard to regain what was lost, people run the risk of stagnation.
I can't wait till the NCR blows the world again like the failed model they follows did, once they obtains nuclear devices, or watching them collapsing like Ceaser's legion will. Either way it will be fun to see the outcome and believe me NCR is doomed its just a matter of time.
Kenneth Chou ARE YOU KIDDING ME! FUCK TANDI! She was literally a tyrant, a "president" for life who conquers her neighbors by force and pushes her currency and taxes on everybody? Fuck Tandi.
I have told myself a few times that I need to start a Caesar's legion character in order to view things from a different perspective but then a somehow becoming a quasi first recon courier.
All the partisan crap in the comments....Dammit, there's only one faction worth siding with in New Vegas, and that's The Kings. Every man's a king, as long as he will stand up and act like it. I want a mod that will move The Kings into one of the casinos if you eliminate one of the three families.
I want a mod where I would kill all them idiots in the casinos.. oh wait, I don't need a mod for that, I already did that! Except Atomic Wrangler, place looks like a good pub.
Kings are too stupid, including The King, controlling abandoned building and a waterpump is as far as they will ever get. Freeside is a Freeside after all.
The moments when Oxhorn read those letters. God I shed a tear and it reminded me so much of my best friend who joined the army. He passed with pride 2 years ago and before he left, he gave me a letter.
"...when you have a choice between a corrupt and incompetent good guy and no good guy, you take the incompetent one over nothing." Gee, that sounds familiar. **bangs head on table**
But seriously tho, I hope the market analyzers at Bethesda realise that this was the defining strenght of Fallout 4 and make Fallout 5 all just about radiant settlement quests with Preston Garvey as the main protagonist, so we see a bit more of the inner workings of that man and what led him to this obssession of saving settlements over and over again without improving the situation of the people living there. Also every NPC, enemy NPC and creature have to be set to essential, so Fallout can cater to an even wider audience, like kids under five. Now that nobody really dies, I'm sure parents happily buy their kids this game, even more so that we can learn a valuable life lesson from Bethesda games, namely that random violence against people we don't like has no consequences, isn't that nice?
I choose independence. when you do and you completed the quest "Return to sender" Chief Hanlon denounces the President and Oliver's imperialistic ways which will probably get thrown out of position, forcing changes. However, if I was the Courier, I would do my best not to alienate the NCR and become allies rather than enemies.
I always skipped reading the notes and misc in all my playthrough of fallout new Vegas and now o regret it, they add so much depth to every mission and I'm going to start another playthrough where I take even more time to enjoy the stories of every side quest instead of just doing the side missions for the extra items or ammo as reward.
Watching these videos really highlights how much weaker the story telling and atmosphere in Fallout 4 was. I kinda get that there were going for the invisible enemy theme in Fallout 4 but it never really gelled for me. If at some point in the story the Institute had replaced some of your companions with Synths or if some of your companions were synths to start and betrayed you at a critical plot moment that would have been more impactful than anything we got.
SkyNinja759 because oxhorn doesn’t like black people he went out of his way to put in a mod that changed ranger andy’s race from black to white just because he isn’t fond of black people the racist dickhead
"But this water is irradiated," he says... yeah, no it isn't. Your character can drink from it just fine with no rads soaked up, even if you don't invest at all in your survival-based perks.
Love this video really got me in to fallout NV again. Thanks for doing these videos, they make my day. I lost my leg to cancer nearly 2years ago & don't get out much so your video keep me busy & happy cheers mate. From your fan in England John /aged:24
I remember when i first did camp foreloren. prepping for a crazy fight in the last few hours of the game, the ncr soldiers were scared shitless but after a few side quest I readied them. they seem scared but determined, treating the raid as a big operation. only when we got their it was a ghost town save one npc General swiftly turned to buckshot hamburger. the NCR acted like it was a major victory, but it felt off to me. turns out I raided that place with boon in the first few hours in to sell all their gear.
The second I heard "unwanted shipments of ammunition", all kinds of alarms and red flags went up in my head. It may very well be an attempt by the Legion to disable their weapons with ammunition that's loaded "too hot" (the gunpowder is either more powerful than regular gunpowder or some kind of more powerful explosive) and when used in a gun, they'll pretty much blow up the gun. If it doesn't wound if not kill the operator, it'll certainly render the weapon irreparable. It's actually an old military tactic that off the top of my head I can recall being used in the Iraq and Vietnam War.... Btw, I haven't played far enough to know if my suspicions were right or not
Have not played Fallout New Vegas in years. I am so glad you are playing it (slowly!)and helping me remember the stories, and see them too from new angles. I had to see who Chief Hanlon's voice actor was. Kris Kristofferson. I loved (love) his voice, his and Sam Elliott's. Actors like them really can make certain characters, and they give the stories and games a true feeling of age, grit, and truth. Thank you again for the fantastic memories!
9:42 the tone of voice and the weight of the messages made me choke up like i know it’s a game yet I had such a reaction to this section, all the regrets and final words are so human
Those letters and Boone's story make me become the Legion's Grim Reaper every time. They must be destroyed and used as an example against savagery and barbarism
Tyler Oertel It has three main advantages, but only those three: 1: Better graphics. 2: Fleshed-out main character who isn’t mute. 3: More than ten voice actors.
I still remember the day that my mom and dad got that letter in the mail. I remember how my mom fell to her knees as her heart was ripped out of her chest. I am not an overly emotional person, but every time I read his letter, or look at one of the pictures of me and him, I just burst into tears. As I am writing this, my heart aches as if someone had ripped my heart out of my chest. But I am thankful for what my brother did, but knowing this doesn't help dull the pain, and one day I am going to follow in his footsteps.
speaking of the NCR i think i am the only one who did the NCR Ending and all NCR quests with the Boomers, Enlcave Remmants, Followers of The Apocalypse, Brotherhood of Steel, Killed all the Fiends Great Khans and Powder Gangers, and all companions quests compleated and i feel proud of myself.
Every time I play through this and get to Camp Forlorn hope, I always wish I could just give them stuff. I hoard enough stuff in that game to feed, clothe and arm pretty much all of the NCR!
I decided to let stone off since he said he saw his friends fucking butchered I battle. My grandfather served in Iraq, and my father said he was never the same after it so I felt a sense of empathy with stone.
22:00 *_SPOILERS:_* Joshua Graham is alive and he is the head of the Dead Horses in the Honest Hearts DLC. So the Burning Man legend is true and was expanded on in a DLC. I really enjoy when games put hints to DLC in the base game. Just like how The Insitute was expanded on in Fallout 4 after the Rivet City quest in Fallout 3. It really makes for an immersive experience.
I’m on my first play through. After I finish a mission I go back and watch your videos to see what I missed. Your commentary is 10/10. It’s like I rather watch your videos instead of playing lol.
You can hear the emotion behind oxhorns reading the notes. He really gives those stories most people miss in their own game such emotion he really does them real justice. Love these vids
The guy stealing medical supplies has a sneak of like 0. Tries to sneak right between you and Boon like "oh I'm just getting some fresh air.. inside the medical tent.. what's up?" Lol.
Ox, I just want to say first that you are doing a superb job with these videos! The reason I found, and still find, New Vegas to be such a good game is not because it's the prettiest, or the best running or even the best playing game (the AI is pretty idiotic unless you mod them) but it's because it pulls zero punches. Everything in this game is done without trying to be careful or insincere. It truly is one of the best games, from a narrative and story point of view, I have ever played!
You know what I've noticed? Out of all the factions that you meet in the Fallout series, most of which try to do the right thing and help people, the only faction that has raider-free territory is the Legion.
Good point, but in the Legion camp you meet a traveling merchant who says that traveling trading in Legion territory is easier than traveling in the NCR, because the Legion doesn't demand the same high taxes the NCR does, and he doesn't have to hire guards for his caravan in Legion territory, something that he can never do in the NCR. Now I'm not saying that the Legion are the good guys, and they do many things that are unquestionably evil, but considering the threats humanity is forced to face on a daily basis in the Fallout world, like feral ghouls, deathclaws, and raiders, some of their brutal methods might be what's needed to make the world safer.
Well of course, I mean in the territory that is fully militarized and can allow low tax demands is the society that relies on slavery and a more patriarchal society. Remember that Caesar's legion is pretty mysoginistic in that regard, plus they conquered mostly tribal micro-societies that used bows, close range weapons and pretty basic rifles to defend themselves, unlike the west coast that is more modernised. Another mean is, back in ancient europe with the roman empire, the empire was pretty safe aswell since they had two kinds of methods to conquer the territory. One was simply conquering it and enslave the survivors of certain tribe. The other way of anexing territories was the so called " Hospitalitas" that implied, if the Romans lost that battle, they allied themselves with the tribe giving the tribe certain privileges in that ground and recognize them as part of the Imperium, as allies. The roman gained what they wanted after all, new terrain and soldiers, yet they don't get slaves, a primal income of working forces.
A bit of additional safety and a higher profit margin while trading is not a good justification for mass murder, torture, rape, and slavery. The Legion is essentially a massive raider faction, their entire government and military society is based around attacking neighboring tribes and taking slaves, booty, and land from them. What's going to happen to them when the Legion finally overextends itself like the historical Roman Empire? Or worse yet, if it somehow manages to defeat all of its major threats and then finds itself with nothing left to do? It'll devolve into civil war in similar patterns as Ancient Rome. It'll bring short-term peace to a small minority of people at the expense of even more destruction and chaos down the line.
Great research, writing and presentation as usual, good sir. NV is probably my favorite/most memorable in the FO series, maybe the atmosphere and the story telling. So happy you are doing NV lore videos now. BTW, did you install mods which changed the faces of some of the NPC? They seem to look different... from my memory.
Everytime i play Fallout/Elder Scroll series. I never notice these stories but when they're highlighted I notice how in-depth these stories and the subtle details really are! What truly makes these games, unique and realistic.
Holy cow! I just found out that Chief Hanlon is voiced by Kris Kristofferson of the Highwaymen! So it’s not JUST his amazing story within the game that’s always drawn me to him!
Hey Ox, I loved this video. It'd be really cool to see you make lore vids about camp McCarren, the fort, the Mojave outpost, or even a dlc are like the couriers mile, or the Sierra madre. I hope to see more awesome nv lore vids like this, keep it up!
Stoked that you've started this New Vegas series. NV is by far my favorite game in the Fallout series, and honestly one of my favorite games of all time. Its like a perfect combination of everything the old Fallout games did well and everything the Bethesda Fallout games do well. Not to mention some of the best story dlc of all time. Can't wait for you to get into Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road.
I reckon Chief Hanlon is vital to the best possible ending for both the Mojave and the NCR. During the final confrontation with Lanius, there is an option to discuss the economics and logistics of occupying the Mojave. You essentially persuade Lanius to withdraw by showing him how the Mojave has been a trap for the NCR, and advise him that it will also be a trap to the Legion if they attempt to take and hold it. That's the reality for both the NCR and the Legion. But the NCR has one more problem, one that Hanlon is keenly aware of, and is a victim of. During your conversations with Hanlon, he demonstrates that he is keenly aware of what's crippling the NCR's efforts in the Mojave and causing thousands of their troops to die there. It's the NCR's bureaucracy. It causes their best troops to be wasted on defending the interests of the brahmin barons while conscripted, under-equipped and ill-prepared young recruits are sent to the Mojave to die and destroy themselves seeking solace in the bright lights of Vegas. It keeps incompetents like Oliver in command even as he deliberately makes tactically poor choices to snub the man who won the first battle of Hoover Dam, just because he feels threatened by the aged veteran hero. The weakness of the NCR in the Mojave has its roots all the way back West. The best thing the NCR can bring back from the Mojave is not victory, but Senator Hanlon. Because the Mojave is a trap for the NCR, but Senator Hanlon would denounce both Oliver and Kimball and shake things up at the highest levels in the NCR. He would also become the Senator for Redding, where the Van Graffs have their headquarters, and serve as a check against their corruption. All of this can only happen if the Chief is not only kept alive, but proven right about the Mojave campaign being a mistake for the NCR. This is the only outcome where the Chief gets fired up enough to get into politics, where he can continue to be a positive force for the NCR. And yes, he was in a dark place for a time, and made a huge mistake. But he also stopped once he realised that it was costing lives, and no matter what options you take in this mission you see that he deeply regrets it. The man's heart is in the right place, and he also shows that he is a man who is capable of seeing and learning from his own mistakes. I see his decision to choose politics over quiet retirement as the best atonement he can make for his mistake, because it has the potential to achieve some real good, certainly far more than his retirement or suicide would achieve.
Chief Hanlon's point about the NCR over-extending themselves is the reason why an alliance between House and the NCR would be the best bet for everyone in the region. House would protect the dam and surrounding area against The Legion with his robots, and the NCR would receive power and water at a reasonable price and no loss of human life. Siding with the NCR directly is NOT the best choice for the Mojave. Its just not.
The ncr wants electricity from helios one and while I get that it is a large solar power plant, but they don't even notice the nearby wind farm that could be used if they repaired it
I would love to see a video on Grandchester Mystery Mansion. Just discovered it and think it would be a great video talking about what happened here and the Winchester Mystery House inspiration behind it.
I think it is very appropriate that Camp Forlorn Hope shares its name with the rescue party sent after the Donner Party. It was doomed for death, not necessarily ultimate failure per se, but death.
I feel like Hanlon's story about the town of Rattletail and his methods tell alot about why he acts in the way that he does, I would've thought it would've been in this video but Hanlon also has like...more dialogue than...like 90% of the NPCs in the game.
i've been avoiding Camp forlorn hope because of how depressing this camp is. but today im gonna end up heading there. btw Oxhorn for you to get Chief hanlon so not kill himself you need to convince him that the legion is crumbling or that Caesar is dead, which means you need to complete a large amount of the main story to get to the point where you get caesar to die during his operation. this is the only way i personally got this option for hanlon to not shoot himself. im not sure what the other way is but i from what i believe will trigger this conversation is talking to the captured legionary and discovering that caesar is sick. is probably the only other way to trigger this conversation other than going to the fort and speaking to caesar and doing his quests

When Tandi was president the NCR was less corrupt, more stable. Then Kimball came, he fucked up everything.
THAT'D BE AWESOME!
I love the NcR but the King will always be my fave
I want a mod where I would kill all them idiots in the casinos.. oh wait, I don't need a mod for that, I already did that!
Except Atomic Wrangler, place looks like a good pub.
Kings are too stupid, including The King, controlling abandoned building and a waterpump is as far as they will ever get. Freeside is a Freeside after all.
It frankly doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I don't know how to justify such a course of action for the Kings.
To get the dialog option with Hanlon you have to kill Ceasar
Italian Fagiolo I believe it's enough to know he's dying of cancer to convince Hanlon to stop.

The moments when Oxhorn read those letters. God I shed a tear and it reminded me so much of my best friend who joined the army. He passed with pride 2 years ago and before he left, he gave me a letter.
You can convince him when you learn about Caesar's brain tumour I think.
Amazing voice acting for chief hanlon. That last recording was incredible.
"...when you have a choice between a corrupt and incompetent good guy and no good guy, you take the incompetent one over nothing."
Gee, that sounds familiar. **bangs head on table**
If only the minutemen where here....
Oh btw another settlement needs our help here i'll mark it on your map
Radiant, minutemen quests beat all of New Vegas gameplay and quests by a long shot, it just had to be said.
Ricky Martin you're joking
Daniel Bristol
Damn you got me!
Ricky Martin thank god
I can not wait until you go over the burned man. One of my fav stories in the fallout universe.
i will fight for the ncr any time they have a lot of good people in their ranks
yap!
play NW 7 times...all time like NCR.
ImStorm YT Not really. The Legion are assholes.
Fallout Knife well you know, patroling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
if they see how the divide is they will shit they pants
I always skipped reading the notes and misc in all my playthrough of fallout new Vegas and now o regret it, they add so much depth to every mission and I'm going to start another playthrough where I take even more time to enjoy the stories of every side quest instead of just doing the side missions for the extra items or ammo as reward.
Oxhorn, the legion didn't recruit his forces from the Mojave Wasteland. He conquered Arizona, Colorado up to Denver and southern Utah.
amin johari Add in all of New Mexico.

I can't help but think that the old guy on 22:14 and think,:
"The Chosen One... KILLED. MAH. PAH."
I convinced Chief Hanlon to stop by saying "Caesar's dead, the legion wont stay around for another 5 years, let alone 10"
I actually teared up while you were reading the letters. That slow pan over the graves was powerful.
I will always go with the NCR.

Speaking of Sam Elliott ---->

I'm glad you're doing Fallout NV lore and sidequests because, in my opinion, it has some of the best in the series
His speech before killing himself is honestly one of the saddest speeches I’ve heard....Short but sincere.
9:42 the tone of voice and the weight of the messages made me choke up like i know it’s a game yet I had such a reaction to this section, all the regrets and final words are so human
I really liked helping around Forlorn Hope, really made me feel like I was part of the unit
Those letters and Boone's story make me become the Legion's Grim Reaper every time. They must be destroyed and used as an example against savagery and barbarism
These Are 50x Better Than Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is a great game and all but it just isn't as full as new Vegas
Tyler Oertel It has three main advantages, but only those three:
1: Better graphics.
2: Fleshed-out main character who isn’t mute.
3: More than ten voice actors.
That second one is a massive negative, can't argue with the other two though.
Neb Jenter How is it a negative? I prefer to know a bit of something about the character I’m portraying.
Because I don't want to play as different flavours of Nate or Nora, I want to make my own character.
I was going to post a joke here, but thought better of it. I'm sorry for your loss, and I wish you good fortune.
Thank you.
May God bless you and be with you

Joshua Graham is alive and he is the head of the Dead Horses in the Honest Hearts DLC.

You channel is goldmine. I really wanted someone to do this kind of videos for fallout. Thanks for taking time for this series.
Unless you count the Legion as raiders.
Right and being a female in the legion is a simple fuck you. You see how they are treated.
To get the “legion is going to crumble” option that makes him give up you have to talk to him after Ceaser is dead.

I can't wait for you to do a video on Ulysses
NCR: yeah we're going to make you pay taxes
me: sounds like modern day America xD
Hey? Wheres a settelment?
SUPER MUTANT HAS HIS EYE ON YOU SILLY DRESSED MAN.
*Pvt stone sneaking around* Boone: you realize I see you right?
The ranger seqouia isn't an unique weapon mate, you can find it on veteran rangers...
This is one of the best written side quests in new vegas. You covered it beautifully. I myself never found all the forlorn hope letters.

I would love to see a video on Grandchester Mystery Mansion. Just discovered it and think it would be a great video talking about what happened here and the Winchester Mystery House inspiration behind it.
In fallout 4 nuka world that it

I think it is very appropriate that Camp Forlorn Hope shares its name with the rescue party sent after the Donner Party. It was doomed for death, not necessarily ultimate failure per se, but death.
I was at Camp Forlorn Hope when i was playing FONV today and my water didn't have in rads in it.
I feel like Hanlon's story about the town of Rattletail and his methods tell alot about why he acts in the way that he does, I would've thought it would've been in this video but Hanlon also has like...more dialogue than...like 90% of the NPCs in the game.
I kept hearing a high pitched buzz whenever characters talked.
Awesome, another New-Vegas lore video. Please more of them!
One tiny nitpicky thing though, the water in forlorn hope isn't irradiated ;)
i've been avoiding Camp forlorn hope because of how depressing this camp is. but today im gonna end up heading there.
btw Oxhorn for you to get Chief hanlon so not kill himself you need to convince him that the legion is crumbling or that Caesar is dead, which means you need to complete a large amount of the main story to get to the point where you get caesar to die during his operation. this is the only way i personally got this option for hanlon to not shoot himself. im not sure what the other way is but i from what i believe will trigger this conversation is talking to the captured legionary and discovering that caesar is sick. is probably the only other way to trigger this conversation other than going to the fort and speaking to caesar and doing his quests
I got to say I play ever fallout game (but 4 I'm busy with work) and you make the story more alive. I can listen to this like a when I was a kid listening to a bedtime story.
