The panel was great. Hugh Grant (at his first ever Comic Con!) said he joined because the script was so funny. They showed another clip that was basically Chris Pine being hilarious, plus another with more of the monsters.

As a longtime D&D fan, the tone is spot on. D&D can be high fantasy, lowbrow or anything in between. The "fun" in D&D is what matters, and this trailer brings it. Core monsters, archetypes, crazy/tried and true scenarios. All checked... Pleasantly optimistic.

It also helps that at least one of the writers and directors, John Francis Daley, is a long-time D&D'er, so there's someone who knows what makes D&D fun at the root of the story and direction.

My favorite easter egg was my favorite monsters in D&D. The Displacer Beast.
It's the Panther that was attaching when the group jump into the gelatinous cube.
In D&D 5e even a single Displacer Beast can be very difficult for a lower ranking party. They can shrug off full attacks where a successful roll would normally just shrug off half damage and takes half damage on fails. And all attacks against them have disadvantage because their displacer ability makes it so what you see is an illusion of there the beast actually is. It "displaces" it's image to fool prey and enemies.
Aside from all that it's already a bad ass panther but then add some nasty tentacles to its back. YIKES.

I got so hype seeing a freaking Gel Cube and a Displacer Beast in the same frame in a film. Displacer beasts are such pesky creatures, but they're so fun to throw at a party as the DM. One of my favorite mobs. Also, the (presumably) Tiefling Druid wild shaping into an Owl Bear was awesome. LOL That immediately told me at least some people on the crew of this film knew their stuff pretty well.

This movie has the *perfect* tone for people who have played the game before or at least fans of watching it through stuff like Critical Role and the like. I'm honestly really happy that they didn't go the super serious route; I don't think it would feel as much like D&D if it did. For me at least, D&D is all about the fun chaos a party can have and just bouncing off of one another as this giant adventure unfolds. I think, at least from the trailer, they've captured that really well

    • @ItzReelOutdoorz

100%. I haven't seen the older attempts at D&D movies, but from what I've heard about them, they all *tried* to go the super-serious, "this is serious high fantasy, guys" route, and they were all hated by the majority of moviegoers. I think this one finally "gets" what D&D is about and has the perfect tone, at least from what the trailer shows. D&D is about a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing, getting together and (in the words of Scanlan Shortholt) fucking shit up, then trying to fix their mistakes while having a fun time and continuing to fuck shit up 😁

This movie actually looks very fun. When I first saw it I was like "An owlbear??! Mimic??!!" and I like how it actually feels like it's based on D&D. And it kind of fits seeing Chris Pine as a bard. I was also very concerned when the announcement came, that a D&D movie was being made. I've been playing D&D for about 7 years now. But now I feel a bit more at ease. I will definitely watch it.
When it comes to favorite characters I've played, one of my favorites I've created for a campaign is my aarakocra monk. I think monk is one of my favorite classes. I pretty much made a thing where she followed the teachings of an old monk from her clan (and had to go learn more about the world (kind of like Keyleth). She is very badass, but very sweet and naive. She was about 10 years old when the adventure started (aarakocra mature at the age of 3 and don't usually live longer than 30 years). We managed to finish the campaign that lasted a couple of years and even had an epilogue where she lived a fulfilling life having her own apprentices and then died at the age of 45. The rest of the party came to her funeral. It was very heartfelt.

I'm so happy they showcased the little things they did. The inclusion of what appears to be a Tiefling Druid with her horns?? Super cool. Chris Pine obv the Bard, maybe multiclass Rogue. Clear spellcaster, looking like a Wizard. The guy who is either a Cleric or a Paladin, and then freakin' Michelle Rodriguez as a female Barbarian is flawless casting. LOL This is gonna be a ton of fun. Looked like the evil dudes may have been one of the more evil races like the Gith possibly. Although a less popular beast, I like that they included the black panther creature which is a Dispalcer Beast. Decent CR rating monster, and a pain in the ass to fight because they can zoop all over the place and displaces itself (as the name implies). They might actually knock this film out of the park with a cast, concept, and budget like this.

  • @hollywoodguy70

I'm glad people are giving the writer a pass on giving the druid an owlbear beast form. A game has to have rules, and so they don't allow players to become op monsters. I can imagine this druid has an attunement to owlbears because of where she was raised. Your beast form should reflect the creatures you're around when you learn the power.

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 2 роки тому

Also, the D&D rules have always been guidelines, not hard lines. Rule of Cool is the law of the land, and what's cooler than a tiny woman turning into a giant strigine-ursine beast? 😁 (Yes, I Googled how to say that without saying "owl" or "bear" 😁) (And inb4 some rules lawyer "corrects" me: I know owlbears are classified as monstrosities, not beasts; I was using the term casually.)

That druid teleportation spell *has* to be planar shift, since the other two druid teleport spells require plants on both sides to work. But the destination doesn't look like another plane to me, so... I'm thinking they just Rule of Cool'd it and gave her dimension door for plot reasons (just like they let her wild shape into an owlbear even though technically they're a monstrosity, so wild shape doesn't work with them).
This looks very fun! To answer your question, I haven't played many characters, as I'm relatively new to D&D (I played one campaign in college, and then got back into it like 3-4 years ago, and played the same character for 90% of that time because campaigns kept ending before I got to explore his story). So I may as well just list all three of those characters 😁:
    1. A dwarf fighter named Shabu. This was my character in that college campaign, the first time I ever played D&D; dwarf fighter was recommended to me by my friends as "an easy combo to play". All I remember about him is that whenever he'd kill an enemy, he'd put his handaxe up to their forehead and press it in until it left a large gash in the flesh but didn't break bone, as a calling card.
    2. A tiefling named Ranios. This is the guy I brought into multiple campaigns hoping to explore his story, but never could. Depending on the campaign, he was a warlock or a wizard. His story was that his father was a demon who killed his mother upon his birth, but his mother had made a deal with the demon dad to provide for Ranios when she was gone. To "technically fulfill" his end of the deal, demon dad left baby Ranios on the steps of an orphanage, and he grew up with only a letter from his mother, going from one foster home to another, constantly being bullied and discriminated for his demon ancestry. (At one point as a young teen, other orphans held him down and tried to cut off his tail to "make him less of a freak", and they were only stopped by the foster mother walking in on them.) He made it his life's goal to find and kill his father in revenge for murdering his mother and leaving him an orphan. The warlock version got magic from his dad as part of the deal his mother made (but didn't know that's where the power came from), the wizard version studied magic to prepare for his vengeance quest. Both focused on cold/ice magic explicitly to rebel against the stereotypical demonic fire, since he wanted nothing to do with his demon ancestry. (In one campaign as a warlock, it was going to be because his dad was an ice demon, though he didn't know that.) Because of being discriminated and bullied, he's very principled on Hammurabian morality: if someone hurts someone, then they should be hurt in the same way as punishment; if someone doesn't hurt anyone, then they are fine and should be left alone, regardless of what they are or what they're doing. To the point where his warlock familiar was a quasit named Hammurabi.
    3. My current-ish character, a Goliath death-domain cleric named Zarin. His whole deal is that he thinks burning or burying the dead is a waste of resources, and they could much better be put to use as undead servants with necromancy. After discovering the Goliath goddess Kuliak, who's only mentioned at funerals and avoided the rest of the time, he starts experimenting with necromancy as practice. He doesn't get far before he's caught digging up a corpse, and is exiled from his tribe and labeled Desecrator. Turns out, Kuliak is also the goddess of exiled Goliaths, so she protects him and they form a relationship whereby she provides him some magic over life and death. He doesn't exactly "worship" her, it's more of a personal friendship, whereby he prays to communicate with her, and she communicates back through feelings, abstract ideas, and occasionally dreams. She rarely speaks directly to him, though sometimes she does. It's like a friendship where he's not afraid to call her out on her shit, and she does the same to him. His goal is to become advanced enough in necromancy to prove his ideals right -- that the dead should be used for labor -- and return to his tribe to show them they were wrong to dismiss him. But so far, turns out zombies and skellies aren't *that* useful, and his (my) attempts to use them have all ended in disaster. So now, refusing to be defeated, he's decided that he's just not practiced enough to make useful undead, so meanwhile he'll focus on killing as many people/creatures who "deserve to die anyway" so there will be more corpse options when he *is* powerful enough to use them. (I.E. necromancy attempts have constantly got me close to death, so now I'm focusing on dealing necrotic damage to things instead -- but with story reasons!)
All that said, I haven't found a group of friends/players who are as enthusiastic about the roleplay/character acting as I am, so half of the story is just what I've decided has happened "off screen" to motivate the character, rather than anything that's been played in-game. One day I'll find my nerdy improv troupe, I'm sure 😁

My character I want to play the most, though, is a human necromancer who is trying to decipher a way to literally save his father's ghost from fading out of existence before he can finish his business and pass on to the afterlife properly.

the writers for this movie have done movies like spiderman: homecoming, freaks and geeks, and horrible bosses, there's going to be a great mix of comedy and solid storytelling

This looks like so much fun. I'm glad they didn't go too serious with this. My favorite character is a level 20 half elf fighter who became a champion of magic. 3.5 edition

They are horns; the druid in the movie is a Tiefling. Still wouldn't be surprised if that was a conscious nod to a half-elf druid most of us know.

I wasn't interested in this movie until I saw your review, even though I watch Critical Role and play D&D on Tuesday nights. I agree that if it wasn't funny, I probably wouldn't give it a second thought because The Legend of Vox Machina is how high my bar is set for a live action D&D movie. I read someone's comment from a magazine/online article saying they thought Chris Pine would be wasted playing a bard, but the way Sam Riegel played Scanlan speaks volumes about just how clutch a bard can be. I prefer to play Life Clerics, but our last campaign ended and the DM asked me to switch specs so I'm an arcane cleric now. I miss my plate. =(

Not Vecna (he had both hands and both eyes), but the color scheme and bald head is telling me that that's a Red Wizard of Thay. I'll admit, I was hoping for a different tone than I'm getting from this trailer, but I'm not giving up hope yet. There's a lot that looks good and I'm looking forward to what they have in store. I'm just hoping that they didn't show all the cool parts in the trailer while also hoping it isn't just two hours of pure fan service.

Um... is that relic potentially a Horn of Orcus? Because definite bad juju there! I am frothing over this. I really hope we get a film that does D&D justice. There seems to be a (hopefully) good balance between humour and severity which is part of what the game is. Fingers crossed for the actual film. Also loving that Chris Pine is playing a Bard!
