For the "are the VFX complete" comment you said when the dragon breathed out sludge instead of fire, they actually probably are. The dragon looked like it had black coloring which in D&D means it breathes out acid instead of fire. Just letting you know that not only are the VFX likely complete, it means that the people behind the movie at least did some poking around a few rulebooks

Are you kidding? This trailer is almost more of an ad for the Monster Manual than anything else - displacer beast! Gelatinous cube! Owlbear! Chromatic dragons with appropriate breath weapons! Even a mimic! Don't be shocked if we see other signature D&D monsters like mind flayers and beholders pop up in the next trailer.

YES! I'm unreasonably excited for this movie purely based on the fact that whoever made it actually seems to have done their research (or is probably a player themselves). After so many game to screen adaptions that completely ignored the source material (halo, resident evil most recently) it's great to see one actually respect it.

The MCU was basically just tapping that nostalgia vein with using "The Immigrant Song" (and their budget!), and this trailer is trying to do the same - all the Critical Role hijinks for new fans, and some Zep for old ones. We'll see if it works though.

hey grace! dnd player here. to clarify, the appeal of the game is generally **that** it looks like the same tropey story, usually. at least to start. when a party is new or they just meet, you get excited to joke about and have fun with a story that looks pretty close to this.
the fun as you go on is what the player can do to make the tropes wilder, funnier, darker etc.
but players are usually quite in on the tropes seeming the same at face value. the main plot, mcguffin, whatever are honestly usually secondary to the entertainment. the character dynamics and personal backstories are usually taken a lot more seriously.
but yeah, the initial appeal is usually "i bet i can take the same redhead tiefling girl type [what sophia is playing] and make them weird or funny or more interesting."
it seems in the film itself, that the coliseum sequence is set up as a staged dnd campaign within the movie, where the floor is a grid and it's populated with well known trope creatures. they're having fun.

To address your question at 5:36, it depends on the DM (Dungeon Master); his (or her!) imagination and sense of game balance determine what the PCs (Player Characters) face. A DM that constantly throws high level monsters (and enemies) that the PCs aren't high enough level and/or equipped to handle will have a very short lived campaign!

It also feels like you're jumping into a campaign. To me personally it looks like an actual campaign adventure. Plus I do believe they're taking heavily influences from the books of D&D and work with other Dnd creator's and finally it's going to be nice to actually watch a dungeon and dragons thing with my family. As much as I love critical role I can't really show vox machina it to my family.

Quick heads up on the Critical Role vs DND thing: the parent company of dnd (Wizards of the Coast) is separate from critical role and has been around for ages. CR is newer. Like 2015 new. And the success of critical role has made DND explode in popularity and caused massive success for Wizards of the Coast. But they dont control CR. And as CR has been publishing their own books/games (some through WotC some not) there is a sense of “is DND anything without critical role”. This is exacerbated by the Vox Machina show. In my opinion, this movie is WotC attempting make their mark on public view of dnd and essentially “take the dnd name back” from critical role.

I realize I am the target audience (play D&D), but I really enjoy recognizing everything that is going on. I will say a lot of basic campaigns do come down to stealing something or doing a job that might go wrong or something. There is the potential for very varied stories in vastly different settings than just basic fantasy, but this is the safe route for a studio with things main stream consumers probably recognize. The different stories/settings will have to wait for if D&D proves to be a decent or good IP to make movies around.

As someone who has been playing dnd for close to a decade - this trailer *perfectly* captures the energy of dnd. I was a bit hesitant when I heard they were making a dnd movie, but after seeing this trailer I could not be more excited - it looks so fun!

My knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons comes from Stranger Things, the weird knockoff from Riverdale, and the one-act "She Kills Monsters" which is actually quite good and very funny. I saw it years and years ago, and it was memorable enough for me to recognize the gelatinous cube in this trailer.

Yeah an entire party of humans seems like a missed opportunity. Human woman barbarian? Not a half-orcess? Shame.

You don't even need much in terms of VFX. Most just need a few practical effects.

I recall a pair of surveys - one from D&D Beyond, and one from Baldur's Gate 3 - that looked at what races/creature types players were actually using. Admittedly, both groups lean hard into newer players. But still the overwhelming majority, I think 80%+, went for human. Not even half-elf.
I don't know if it's because a lot of modern fantasy seems to be humans-only (or mostly), because of the stat boosts & flexibility, or because people now are basic LOL But that's probably why they went with a nearly all-human party here.

Oh and while it was stated below that the dragon was likely finished CGI or close to, I just want to say that it is spot on to the image of the black dragon adult from the D&D monster manual. They do indeed spit acid instead of fire.
D&D has 10 famous dragon subspecies, the good metallic and evil chromatic, as well as five lesser known neutral gem based ones. The blue dragon from Legend of Vox Machina was a chromatic type that breaths lightning, and the dragons at the end of the season are other chromatics. Red and gold are fire, silver and white are ice, black and copper are acid, blue and bronze are lightning, green is poison gas, and brass is intense heat (so like fire but less flames and more furnace air). The gems are generally weirder types and also psychic.

First, while I really liked the Legend of Vox Machina animated show, it's much sillier and less emotional impact that the actual Critical Role live play.
Though putting a movie in the critical Role universe would be awesome (and it's technically part of the D&D multiverse as there is official content), Wizards of the Coast wants to highlight their default setting (Forgotten Realms, and this takes place in the main geographic region there) not the one created by Matt Mercer, even if they owe a lot to him and the CR team and have a good working relationship.

“Maybe Dungeons and Dragons doesn’t have a lot of variation.” Long time fan of Grace, longer D&D fan. This is perhaps the single most offensive thing she’s ever said. xD
There are always commonalities amongst campaigns (archetypes, tropes, etc.) but D&D is actually one of the most diverse templates for stories out there! All about what you bring to it. This movie looks to be going for a classic Swords & Sorcery vibe.

As for the trailer, if they're going old-school Sword & Sorcery, I don't see it, outside the use of Zep music. A big issue I see is that the 5e/Critical Role/Stranger Things era is geared hard towards applying modern sensibilities to classic tropes, with a lot of self-aware humor & nostalgia for an era that is actually before their time.
This feels more like a parody deconstruction of classic D&D, compared even to non-Tolkien 80s fantasy staples like Ladyhawke, Krull, or Conan. I wasn't the biggest Dragonlance or Drizzt fan, but I'd take a live-action of those over this Guardians of the Grasslands stuff.
