Jay was right on with it having a sense of humor, and not taking itself super serious, and also not having to explain literally everything so that people will understand what is happening. Magic happens, why, because a wizard did it, so go do the thing. And they seem to have just done the thing.
I think you're close. The other movies acknowledge, "you're playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons" first, and then take us into the world. This movie exists entirely in the world of D&D. There are no players, just the characters. The die rolls, cross talk, and everything that isn't combat or RP, is taking place above table and OFF SCREEN. This let's us immerse into the story.
Spot on, the movie that I saw in the theater (the Jeremy Irons one) took itself too seriously, they had a joke character (one of the Wayans) but that was the only sense of humor and it was just obnoxious. House of the Dragon is depicting the ascension of Viserys I, the naming of his daughter Rhaenrya as his heir (and he NEVER changed it, even after having sons), his death and the succession civil war named The Dance of the Dragons. We probably wouldn’t be getting dragon on dragon fighting until season two. The fight I’m looking forward to takes place above the God’s Eye with Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen. Btw, there are 17 dragons during this time period.

I think a lot of what you two said about the D&D movie definitely helps, but the people behind the movie are also D&D fans and worked with Wizards of the Coast and Chris Perkins (Principal Story Designer at WotC) on the movie, so that also helped too. I wholeheartedly believe that I will enjoy the DnD movie regardless if it flops or not. While the trailer may seem deceiving, it looks like some solid, hour and a half or slightly longer dumb adventure fun. It seems to have some of the right amount of cheese while keeping itself in a basic storytelling mode, letting some goofiness happen. And we don't need a super intense fantasy movie and setting, we've had so much of that already. What I'm trying to say is that the movie needs to nail "fun" over anything else

The number of times I've seen people on forums for games I play go "but it isn't realistic!" is mind numbing. If I wanted realism, I'd play a simulator or deal with real life. I play games (and watch movies or TV) to escape from reality for a bit. Don't make everything anti-fun just because it needs to be realistic. Life is hard enough most of the time, let people have an escape.

Jay I'm 100% with you about D&D. Our campaign allows anything from anything, and after it's balanced it's more than welcomed in game. Allows the players to have a deeper interest when they can really play something they are invested in and also our encounters can draw from any media or intellectual property with keeps things fresh and interesting

The DnD trailer reminds me a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy, which honestly could just be a Spelljammer campaign. I've seen some people say that it could end up like Thor Love and Thunder, where the jokes lead to it feeling like there's not enough stakes. The "chonky" red dragon is canonical, his name is Themberchaud and he is basically being bribed by a deep dwarf city so he doesn't ever leave. Chris Perkins (basically head of D&D story stuff) said the directors asked for a canonical prison, so they came up with the prison from Rime of the Frost Maiden, which is shown in this trailer. So its like a weird reverse easter egg! But yeah, we know Chris Pine is a Bard and a member of the Harpers from Forgotten REalms, Justice Smith is a sorcerer (and looks Half elven?), Michelle Rodriguez is a Barbarian, the guy from BRidgerton whose name I forget is paladin, and the druid is a tiefling but can also turn into monstrosities. Oh and Hugh Grant who might be their like employer is a rogue, obviously. Some people are low-key hoping they release a short source book to go with the movie, because a Druid feat that allows you to turn into monstrosities without Shapechanger or True Polymorph would be awesome.
As a DM, I like to keep in a relative boundary of rules but I love to fun with it. Like I’m not having fun if my players aren’t, I want them to enjoy the world I create or run. The trailer for the movie looks fun though.

All of the people complaining that the Druid shouldn't be able to wildshape into an Owlbear can suck it, because it looked AWESOME on screen. I think one of the important things they got right with this attempt at a D&D movie is they're actually using established D&D lore instead of slapping the logo on a generic fantasy movie. We're getting actual D&D classes(within reason, it's not like they rolled up character sheets for each of them), actual D&D monsters(Black Dragon WITH the right head shape from the Monster Manual, Mimic, Owlbear, Gelatinous Cube, AND A FREAKING DISPLACER BEAST BE STILL MY HEART!), and it's actually set in the Forgotten Realms. Those appeared to be Red Wizards of Thay as the villains, and I'm pretty sure Chris Pine's character is/was one of the Harpers. I'm not ready to say I'm optimistic about this movie yet, I've been burned before. But I am intrigued, bordering on hopeful.
