  • I've been shooting large format photography for almost 6 months "off camera" to really feel confident in the technique before sharing it on my channel. I shoot with a Chamonix 45F-2 and a 180mm lens. In this video, I give myself a photography assignment to explore Idaho City with my 4x5 and my Polaroid I-2 to create a multi-layered triptych.
The first photography location is of the Idaho City Pioneer Cemetery. The second photography location is of the original Catholic Church. The third location is of the Pon Yam Store. There was so much more to photograph that I am positive I'll be making the drive out there again for more film photography!

Great video Jude. Love the concept, the photos and the methodology you are using. I could listen to you narrate all day! LOL. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for checking it out! Idaho City is usually just a pass through for me on the way to Stanley. This is one of the first times I've gone out to actually explore!

Really enjoyed this video, Jude. Your 4X5's are splendid. I also have been known to visit old cemeteries. If you ever get towards Lander, Wyoming. The Sacajawea Cemetery is definitely worth the stop. Take care now and keep the videos coming.👍👍

Thanks for that! I really appreciate the encouragement! I will have to make a trip out there! If my channel grows like I'm hoping it will, I will be able to go farther for the photography!

This one was quite a bit of work to put together, so I really appreciate your kind words! I love the cinematography and editing almost as much as the photography!

well done bud. cool finds and collections! I just did a road trip across the midwest to the east coast and spent some time shooting old barns. Interesting subjects for sure!

That sounds like a fantastic trip! I have been eyeing a few old barns along the road around here. Most of them would make a perfect subject except that it's hard to find a wide enough shoulder to pull over safely. Haha! Thanks, man!

I just found your channel. I like your work. I lived in Boise from 1999 to 2006. I worked for the Boise Parks department. Several of the locations and parks that you have in your videos I took care of. The zoo, train depot ect.. I loved living and working there. Your vids make me homesick and happy to see my old stomping grounds. I am an amateur large and medium format photographer retired and living my home state of PA.Keep up the good work.

Oh that's so cool! I have often thought it would be super cool to work for the Parks Department! The changes you've seen in Boise is probably mind-blowing! Haha! Thank you so much for the kind words and for the view!

Nice project! Thanks! Great job on the church!
I tend to be much more productive photographically when I give myself an assignment or theme rather than just roaming around looking for inspiration. Old cemeteries are one of my favorite things to shoot.

I feel the same way. This was, maybe, the third time I focused on an actual project. All the other times I've gone out, I just wandered aimlessly and the photographs showed. Thanks for the encouragement and support!

also another tip, for the polaroid shot of the church, perhaps an ND filter?(a variable, on the sky ending at the church roof), as the sun from behind the belfry overexposed the shot by 1-2 stops, making it unusable, if you don't photoshop it first; perhaps a shot for digital instead, where this glare can be dealt with easily.

great video, but one tip, for setting the shutter, TEST it, before the slide goes out, so you know the shutter is cocked, set at appropriate speed (timing by the sound it makes), and that the film is safe to be exposed properly, NOT flashed accidentally by an open lens.

Great project! I recently picked up a 4x5 and have been hesitant to get out there and start shooting. I'm a person who enjoys process but for some reason I'm intimidated by this step into large format. I appreciated your video and your approach.

I’m so happy my video helped! Large format is super fun, and is great for manual control over every aspect of the final photo. What medium format do you shoot with?

Great video! Love to see some on location stuff again!
And the idea of the Triptych is solid.
BTW. That's some killer gear you are using! Love the Charmonix and The Polaroid I-2, pro-level analogue gear made today. As a film nerd I support that, more analogue gear to the people! :)

Thanks man! I really wished my third subject could’ve been the jailhouse. That would’ve fit just a little better, in my opinion.
Haha! I just need to add a Hasselblad to my kit and I’ll be happy.

Great video, idea and photos! I also have a 45F-2, and I really enjoy it! Do you scan your large format negatives yourself? I use a digital camera, take four shots and stitch them together in Lightroom, works great.

Thank you so much! Yay, 45F-2 pals! I do scan mine using an Epson V850. I've been wanting to try taking photos and stitching them, but I don't have a good overhead tripod to get things perfectly level.
